actually HDLC is a standard (much older than PPP i believe).  it's usually
used on synchronous point-to-point hardwired links (such as leased lines)
where other advanced features of PPP arent really needed (like
link authentication or IP address/parameter negotiation).  so if it's a
leased line, HDLC is the simpler choice for connectivity and
troubleshooting (because the telco always supports it). and linux 
supports HDLC too in case you want to replace your cisco routers.
