(313) Technoir Audio Special Projects
I don't recall seeing anything regarding this on the list... Adam Ratana of Technoir Audio spent three years tracking down Steel City recluse and local techno legend Edison Carter to discover that Edison had ceased making music for reasons he could - or would - not say. However, he did manage to procure these three tracks from Edison's vast untapped vault of music. They grace the grooves of the first in the Technoir Audio Special Projects series - deep yet driving, powerful and warm, at times ferociously jackin' in their energy, yet always focused within their intensity. A unique opportunity to experience these hitherto unheard tracks. http://www.covert.uk.com/choons.cfm?ar=Edison%20Carter

When the Tower Records here in Birmingham, MI closed it's doors, I snagged several sealed copies of various Drexciya releases along with a bunch of Tresor records. Tower Records has vinyl too... but it's not the vinyl that I want to buy...

-Original Message- From: diana potts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] interesting, i _heard_ mos def isn't cheap to get, he oddly fits in with the rest of the line up. I think His addition is exactly what this festival needs. I think He'll draw a considerable amount of the Cities hip-hop fans that, otherwise, wouldn't attend this year, due to the admission fee. Hip-Hop fans don't pay admission fees to see John Tejada. I hope this helps makes up for the lack of attendance due to the cover charge.

-Original Message- From: diana potts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] if anyone doesnt go down b/c of FIVE dollars for -all- day- i hope they stay home. I think you're missing the point. I'm referring to an entirely different demographic. Thousands of people have attended the festival in the past, due to the fact that it was free. It was something new to check out, for free. They may not be fans of electronic music. But they came to check it out, just for the sake of it. In case you're not aware, hip-hop is the music of choice for most of Detroit's inner city population. Mos Def will attract these people in a way that non hip-hop artists won't. I wouldn't pay $5 to attend a show that was strictly hip-hop, but if you threw a couple of my favorite electronic artists on the bill (big names at that) I'd probably go check it out.

RE: (313) Selling records- need help
Every time I look @ my complete S.I.D. collection, I ask myself what would it take for you to sell these? ... How much money would someone have to offer you? And to be honest, I can never settle on a dollar amount. I often try to convince myself that I could sell them and buy a hundred+ new records with the money I could get for them. Or a new piece of gear. But I've come to realize that I would starve to death before I sold any of my rare pieces. Maybe I'm too attached to the nostalgia aspect of them. -R -Original Message- From: Paul Kendrick [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, September 03, 2004 11:18 AM To: 313 Subject: (313) Selling records- need help Need help. That is an excellent record... it's called 'On The Raw Again' and it's on Basic Recordings. Here's discogs URL - http://www.discogs.com/release/36590 Phil From: Chrismiller hiya I'm trying to track down a copy of 'Underwater' by Point G aka DJ Gregory. It was on the Sonar mix of Laurent Garnier's Excess Luggage release, and I've heard him play it on a Radio 1 mix too. but that's all I really know of it. I couldn't find much info on discogs. Does anyone know if it's been released, if so, what label etc? thanks in advance. Chris
RE: (313) otto lives!
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] in regard to nights at clubs shutting down - I think it's been caused by people getting nervous about upcoming elections - not wanting to spend too much money and people just not really feeling like going out because of this and other social-political woes. I'd say clubs experiencing decreasing numbers is not strictly a US phenomenon - there was a time here (Dublin) when 4 or 5 techno nights could happen over a weekend and all would do reasonably well. Not so much these day though, a few clubs have a strong following but the rest might be empty if a Mills or Garnier is in town playing one of the bigger venues. I reckon it's got a lot to do with the fact the dance music - or at least the form of it we discuss here - isn't new any more, so there's not such an urgency to see what it's all about for those people only getting to a club going age now. The more I find out about UR, the stranger it seems. We don't make music in search of fame and fortune. We make it when we feel like it. That can be extremely frustrating for artists on the label. Who is the 'we' in this quote? Doesn't this seem circular? It's the artists who make the tunes, and they put them out when they feel like it - no problem, yeah? There's other strange stuff detailing the internal politics of UR, but I don't want to over-analyze my heroes. It's just...interesting to think about how things go down internally in UR. Check his label Light and Dark for some really deep stuff, also an early doublepack on Blueprint (09??) was excellent. RE: (313) uncomfortable performing (was laptop something or other )
OK, I will do my best to explain what I mean, but it may not come across very well... Too high is when you are having to actually lift your arms above your own centre of gravity. If you assume the DJ position (arms in front, bent at the elbow) then IN MY OPINION the decks etc should be BELO , or at least level with that point. It sounds silly, and I am having trouble expressing what I mean, but the reason behind this is that whenever I have played with the decks ABOVE this height, I find that I have to exert myself more, and my movements are not as natural as they could be, because I am working against my own centre of gravity (which is roughly a persons belly / midriff area.) I am not a tall person, and obviously it will be different for many people, but I maintain that if the decks are too high, then the performance will certainly not be as lofty. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 11 May 2004 4:12 To: Blackman, Ryan (UKEKT) Cc: 313@hyperreal.org; Dennis DeSantis Subject: RE: (313) uncomfortable performing (was laptop something or other ) Too low is infinitely more desirable than too high. For example, Stacey Pullen just played here. Even though I didn't stay for the entire event I heard from others that he played a fine set. He was well on his way to it when I was leaving (don't ask - I was exhausted from work). Now the next day I'm hearing from loads of other people that they were disappointed with his set. Turns out they thought he was going to play TECHNO!!, if you know what I mean. Most of the local jocks who call themselves techno djs were on the bill and were all hyped about Stacey playing. Laurent is one of the O.G. Technotourists, who started coming to Detroit to hang out and play years and years ago. He is every bit the fan as you or I. He LOVES Detroit -- the music and the city and the people. 2. While he's not the only producer in France, or the first, he is one of France's true pioneers in Dance music, and is a hero to French kids. France is in its own way as insular and conservative as the US, and Laurent introduced and championed US house and techno to an audience that isn't always receptive to new music from elsewhere. His infectious enthusiasm for the music, and his skills in reading and motivating a crowd, allows him to lead and educate an audience. If you don't like him, or were underwhelmed when you saw him, that's fine.. It's horses for courses. I only like some of what he's done as a producer.
