Date/Time Fields

2010-04-14 Thread Coleman, Gavin
Hi List - I've got a question that I hope is really simple! We have had several
users complaining that when they click on the ellipsis (the three dots) on a
Date/Time field, the Date/Time dialog box opens up and the time portion is
displayed as 00:00:00. Other people have said that when they open up this
dialog the time portion defaults to the present time. I think this is a user
tool / mid-tier patch issue or possibly a settings issue.

Can anyone confirm where this issue lies. For reference, we are on ARS 6.3
patch 18. I've just tested with my user tool and confirmed that the time
portion appears as 00:00:00 (I am on user tool patch 24)

It's not a serious issue, but it is taking up valuable developers' time!

Thanks for your help.

Problems creating LDAP Vendor forms

2010-04-14 Thread Sergio Tomillero
Hello,

Creating a vendor form, I indicate the next in vendor properties:
//LDAP_DIRECTORY_SERVICE_HOST/BASE_DN??sub?(objectclass=OrganizationalPerson)

I get a list of fields and choose some of them. Once created the form, I
cannot see the results in Remedy. When accessing to it, and doing a clic on
‘Search’ button, I get the message:

- ARERR [100] Entry ID void parameter

It happens the same with any Vendor Form using LDAP that I create, instead
of the vendor properties.
Doing a plugging log, I do not see any relevant. Also If I indicate
something in Request ID field, for instance ‘1’ and do a search, I get the
error:

- LDAP : Bad search filter (LDAPERR 87) (ARERR 3377)

Any idea?
Thank you in advance,
Sergio Tomillero

During fail over it switches to the DR Box. My question is if DR

Is there a way to have DR mirrored with the same IP and host name?

Benefit of Prefetch Remedy midtier 7.1

2010-04-14 Thread remedy lee
Hi,

I'm confused on this prefetch 'feature' in midtier.
The way I read it is that only when a server is restarted will the
forms (on the web server) reload in order to save time when the first
user logs in.
So instead of loading HPD:Help Desk when a user first hits it, it will
load by itself when restarted.
Benefit is that the first user logging in won't get that 1-2 mins
loading wait.

Now sales people and certain consultants say that prefetch does more
than that.
It actually loads the forms into the clients computer and therefore
speeds up the whole midtier itself.
So they say that prefetch helps overall everyday midtier use such as
the 50th person using HPD:Help Desk will notice better speeds with
prefetch than without.
They say it loads the forms to the clients computers preemptively and
therefore improves performance.
To me that doesn't make sense, how can the server know where to load
the files. Does it work by loading all the web forms when the person
logs in?

I really see no benefit to using prefetch if our server hardly restarts

Hi,

I would probably loop through the whole string.

There are several ways to do this, and if the text is not too big, this
could be a way to do it using three filters in a filter-guide.

run-if()
  set-fields
tmpStr = $string$
tmpStrDigits = $NULL$
#loop
runif('tmpStr' LIKE [0-9]%) # starts with a digit
  set-fields
tmpStrDigits = $tmpStrDigits$ + SUBSTRC($tmpStr$, 0, 1)
runif('tmpStr' LIKE _%[0-9]%) # contains more digits
  set-fields
tmpStr = SUBSTRC($tmpStr$, 1) # remove first character
  goto #loop

Re: Benefit of Prefetch Remedy midtier 7.1

2010-04-14 Thread Rick Cook
If the 7.1 prefetch pushes files to the client, I, too, would be surprised.
What I understand is similar to what you do - it pre-caches the file
definitions to the Mid-Tier server, so that if the client has to re-cache,
it doesn't have to wait for that first step of caching from the AR server
to the Mid-Tier servert to happen. You can configure how often it checks for
that, and force a re-cache on demand if you wish, but you can also leave the
client files alone if you wish, which would give the appearance that the
re-cache also improved performance down to the client level, even if
technically all it did was remove the requirement of a client re-cache with
a MT configuration setting that I think has been there since v6. The
pre-cache in v7 simply gave more power to that option by precaching to the
MT server as well. Perhaps that is what the sales people are saying.

So, pre-7.1, the Client (Browser) opens a Remedy form. Browser checks MT
server to see if the hash on the client's cached copy of that form is equal
to that which is on the MT server. Under the pre 7.1 MT config, the MT
server may or may not have a locally cached copy of that form, only getting
that copy on demand (i.e. the first person to request it forces the
re-cache). So the MT server has to wait for the AR Server to at least
check, and possibly re-cache the form, and the client has to wait for the MT
server to do that so that it can go through the same process.

In 7.1, if the form is pre-cached to the MT server, the MT -- AR Server
wait time is removed (unless the form has been changed since the last
pre-cache). The only check that has to be made is from the client to the MT
server. If the client's cached copy is identical to that of the MT server,
no re-cache is necessary.

Re: Extracting digits from a character field

2010-04-14 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
Depending on how the data is in the string (and since you are on Oracle) you
can use the Regexp_REPLACE oracle function

In a Set Fields from SQL action set a field equal to $1$ from:

SELECT Regexp_REPLACE('$source field$ ',
'([[:cntrl:][:punct:][:space:][:alpha:]])','') from DUAL

This will remove all control, punctuation, white space, and alpha characters
from the string. (Yes there is a space after the source field so in case the
source field is null then the function will not error but will return null)

For Oracle REGEXP functions you can reference:
http://psoug.org/reference/regexp.html

Well,

I agree that the secong part is confusing, and it deffinitely does not
happen the way you refered, have no idea where you got this info from, but
generally a sales persons (even from bmc) are not a good source.

So, the benefits are, as you said, that the forms are pre-cached, especially
helpfull when you run multiple mid-tiers. you can put a web in the mix and
users won't see the difference (or a delay). For frequently used forms in
busy environment you may have multiple users requesting them at the same
time, so if 50 users wait for the help desk to cache at the same time that
will kill the performance of your mid-tier, because you have 50 requests
waiting.

Re: Benefit of Prefetch Remedy midtier 7.1

2010-04-14 Thread Marsh, Lee
For us the most significant part of the pre-fetch is that the form is
translated. It is translated to Java code and cached. This cache of
Java code is available for any request for the form. We found that the
translation takes significant server processing resources that impacts
the performance of requests. Pre-fetching reduces these impacts for
most of the dominant forms.

This will leave the string with only special characters and numerical
characters..

I am not sure if TRANSLATE works on MS-SQL but you could give it a shot if
MS-SQL is your underlying database.

Re: Benefit of Prefetch Remedy midtier 7.1

You can trigger the Prefetch by bouncing Tomcat. You don't have to

Subject: Benefit of Prefetch Remedy midtier 7.1

Hi,

I'm confused on this prefetch 'feature' in midtier.
The way I read it is that only when a server is restarted will the forms
(on the web server) reload in order to save time when the first user
logs in.

So they say that prefetch helps overall everyday midtier use such as the
50th person using HPD:Help Desk will notice better speeds with prefetch
than without.
They say it loads the forms to the clients computers preemptively and
therefore improves performance.
To me that doesn't make sense, how can the server know where to load the
files. Does it work by loading all the web forms when the person logs
in?

I really see no benefit to using prefetch if our server hardly restarts

Lisa,

I highly doubt there is a limit like that.. Check your web server log files
to see if there is a web server level error that was reported at that time.
I'm inclined to think you might have encountered a out of memory error on
the web server that may have resulted in that. In which case adjusting your
heap size might be in order..

Re: Problems creating LDAP Vendor forms

2010-04-14 Thread Joe D'Souza
Sergio,

One of the records from LDAP from the LDAP attribute that you have mapped to
the Request ID field on the vendor form has a null value. This is preventing
the ARS from displaying the information. Use an LDAP browser and try
locating that record and insert some unique piece of information in that
attribute... I am guessing you are probably on ARS 6.3 or below? I think the
newer version ignores blank values in the Request ID fields or duplicates
and still displays the information..

Location data in 7.5

2010-04-14 Thread Thad K Esser

Hello,

I am building an application where menus
need to be provided for the Floor and Room fields of a CI. We are
currently using ITSM 7.0,3, but will be upgrading to a later version sometime
this year. We don't have ITSM 7.6 installed anywhere. In the
7.6 concepts guide, there is a note that With version 7.5,
the following structures were moved from BMC Remedy ITSM to BMC Atrium
Core: Company (tenancy definition and external company definition), Location,
and Categorization (product categorization). I'm guessing that
means that 7.6 will make use of the PhysicalLocation class to store sites,
although the screen shots in the 7.6 config guide look like the same old
Site screens as in 7.0.3. As part of Asset Management, there is also
an InventoryStorage class for inventory locations.

So, keeping in mind future versions,
which class would be best to use (PhysicalLocation, InventoryStorage, something
else?) to store floor/room information?

Re: Service-now.com

2010-04-14 Thread Oracle4Me
I might check Service-now out. And if I like it - I will recommend this
to my Clients. With Remedy I can't get the free demo license anymore, and
I personally am not happy with Remedy's support.

In a message dated 3/22/2010 3:06:32 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time,
robert.mole...@gmail.com writes:

Just went to Service-now admin training as a partner - it is very
impressive - highly customizable - and very clicky to administer -
however with that said - so is Remedy in the Developer Studio / Admin
Tools. And being a single-web-based-tool - no need for separate tools
to develop / use.

Yes we are beginning to see major ground-shift in many customers
changing from BMC to Service-Now due to the facts that:
* TCO - and Licensing Model - plus SAAS cuts TCO as well - base
contracts contain DEV-TEST-PROD without enterprise level contracts -
all MODULES are available in the base contract as well!
* Desire to stay OOB - never occurs in Reality - regardless of the product
* BMC ITSM product is quite huge in the aspects and 'feature richness'
but adds to the deployment complexity / end-user training /
maintenance costs long term.
* KISS -  is Service-Now - and it's ITIL Certified in 11 modules (3
remaining)

Now with that said my **PERSONAL** feelings are that:
* Service Now applications are a bit light compared to BMC ITSM -
however how many customers use __ALL__ of the fields / functionality
in BMC ITSM?
* Both Core Systems (Forget ITSM at this point) - are easy to
develop on, build workflows on, control UI Events, Groups, Roles, etc.
* However Service-Now wins on the fact that
1). Single tool (web interface) to build / customize / use
2). No differences in client types (Thick / Thin)
3). Client Rich Features - such as right click to report, quick
exports to xyz format, print ticket to Word/PDF/xxx (without needing a
report!)
4). Visualization of objects (CMDB) and Approval Process Builder /
Approval Process Life Cycle are quite impressive and respond much
faster than BMC ITSM
5). ...

So while I might slowly become a Service-Now convert - I do realize that:
* 11+ Years experience in Remedy ARS and Applications (since version
3) is highly still valuable
* Service-Now is becoming a High-Demand Trend which means it is
foolish to NOT expand my skill-sets
* having Service-Now AND Remedy ARS AND BMC ITSM experience in real
world experiences is a valuable commodity
* Customers will continue to require customizations / enhancements to
EITHER product - and last time I checked I still need to pay the bills
:)

If in doubt - go check their website - they have weekly live-demos,
and actually a 'demo system' that is available for you to play-in,
including as admin so you can develop. (they do refresh the system
every night back to OOB)

And you can check out their own words on the topic as well:

HTH - and feel free to ask questions offline/online about this...

reason the AR Server and MidTier are already running in our backup datacenter.

Our DBAs replicate our SQL Server DB to a separate cluster in our backup
datacenter. I believe they use VVR for this. My understanding is that once
failed over, the DB would have the same instance name, but the box it is
running on would not have the same hostname / IP.

A server group behind a load balancer can help you accomplish this. If you
want, direct all traffic to the primary server unless it’s down, then the LB
can direct traffic to the backup server. They can both be up at the same time,
and the IP address doesn’t need to be the same, and you don’t need to replicate
data. You would just have a DNS alias for the load balancer that would be
exposed to clients – they wouldn’t need to know the details about what’s behind
the LB.

That doesn’t address database failure, but there are other options in that
realm that are database specific.

If you have a DR box that is mirrored after Production. Someone was telling me
that there are DR tools that will allow you to have the same Hostname and IP
address for Prod and the DR server, and allow synchronization between the two
servers.

During fail over it switches to the DR Box. My question is if DR server is up,
it cannot have the same host name and IP address. If the DR is down, then the
synchronization of data will not take place.

Is there a way to have DR mirrored with the same IP and host name?

If you are in an Oracle database, use the function TRANSLATE to replace all
Alpha characters with either NULL or space or whatever else you wish to..
This will leave the string with only special characters and numerical
characters..

I am not sure if TRANSLATE works on MS-SQL but you could give it a shot if
MS-SQL is your underlying database.

* KISS - is Service-Now - and it's ITIL Certified in 11 modules (3

5). ...

So while I might slowly become a Service-Now convert - I do realize
that:

And you can check out their own words on the topic as well:
http://www.service-now.com/relief-package-remedy/remedy-facts/

HTH - and feel free to ask questions offline/online about this...

Thad, I see fields for Room and Floor on the Physical Location CI form in

want to add all that data for each CI, you could do that there. In addition,

All fields in a Push Fields action are part of the push transaction yes, but
for a standard modify of a form if they are not changed then the TR value is
NULL.

From the Workflow Objects PDF

- Transaction Only-References the value of the field in the current transaction
only. If the value is not changed in the transaction, it is considered to be
$NULL$. If the operation is a delete, it is considered to be $NULL$. To specify
a check of the transaction only, use the format 'TR.field' when you enter the
field name in the Run If field.

- Database Only-References the value of the field in the database only. No
check is made of the value in the current transaction. If the operation is a
create operation, it is considered to be $NULL$. To specify a reference of the
database only, use the format 'DB.field' when you enter the field name in the
Run If field.

- Transaction and Database-References the value of the field in the current
transaction and uses that value if changed. If not changed in the current
transaction, references the value of the field in the database. To specify a
reference of both the transaction and the database (in this order), use the
format 'field' when you enter the field name in the Run If field.

The TR value is also NULL if the field
on the form was cleared. So in that case, the TR value is null, and
the value has changed.

There's just too many variations and
gotchas to make using the TR value worthwhile.

IMO. :-)

We ran into this some months ago as we were upgrading to aruser 7.5. I

there's a fix for it.

Date/Time Fields

**
Hi List ? I?ve got a question that I hope is really simple! We have had
several users complaining that when they click on the ellipsis (the three
dots) on a Date/Time field, the Date/Time dialog box opens up and the time
portion is displayed as 00:00:00. Other people have said that when they
open up this dialog the time portion defaults to the present time. I think
this is a user tool / mid-tier patch issue or possibly a settings issue.

Can anyone confirm where this issue lies. For reference, we are on ARS 6.3
patch 18. I?ve just tested with my user tool and confirmed that the time
portion appears as 00:00:00 (I am on user tool patch 24)

It?s not a serious issue, but it is taking up valuable developers? time!

Thanks for your help.

Tool suggestion

2010-04-14 Thread lakhes
Hi Listners,

I needed some Tool recommendations to slove the problem that we are having
We use Remedy 6.3 ARS and Customer support module 5.6. We have asset which
we track with issues and we can relate asset to issue. Now our eng usually
log on to customer site via SHS and try to solve problem with asset that
we own. This asset can be a small piece of puzzle which customer has.
Usually the customer will provide us the layout of all the assets and
interdependencies. I was wondering is there any tool which can integrated
with remedy system which will give the topology diagram of the customer
site also which can be saved in remedy system let me know.

CMDB can do this. The problem you will have is that you would need to upgrade
to ARS 7.1 or 7.5 to get a supported version of CMDB.

There were a couple that could be integrated with 6.3. Since you already asked
about Assets being viewed with dependencies if you go to a later version of ARS
you could review if Remedy Knowledge Management could be itegrated with a
customization.

Hi,

('AssignedToTech' != 'DB.AssignedToTech') will allways detect a change.

('AssignedToTech' != 'DB.AssignedToTech' AND 'AssignedToTech' != $NULL$)
when you want to check for a change to a non-null-value.

The execution order of your filters, and filter phasing, may play tricks
with you. A value can be changed by another filter after your check was
done.

I suggest that you turn on both API/FLTR/SQL-logging to track this down.
