RKM 7.5 Installation - Midtier or Application Server ?

2010-07-12 Thread Mario Röhr
Hello Listers,

if you have a classical 3 tier environment, where to install BMC RKM, on the
MidTier Server or on the Server where AR Server is installed?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Atrium Core 7.6 Web Services

2010-07-12 Thread Jason Miller
Thanks! I have been meaning to ask about the Atrium Core Web Services
myself and then I saw Kali's post. We installed it on our POC system but it
was taxing the little vm too much so I removed it.

Can you clarify, the Atrium Core Web Service do not only provide CMDB data
to other apps but can also bring in data from system's that can feed into
the CMDB?

Somewhere I got the impression that the Atrium web services were only one
way, exposing data stored in the CMDB.

2010-07-12 Thread Easter, David
Oops, sorry - you are correct. Probably was an internal person asking on an
internal forum for a customer (perhaps the one that posted here...)

Here's the answer:

The Atrium Core Web Services and the Web Services provided by AR are not the
same features and they do not serve the same purpose.
AR provides a way to expose and manage a form through Web Services. That
enables AR applications to provide access and control to their forms through
Web Services.
AR uses Axis. AR web services can be registered if the Atrium Core UDDI
registry is installed and its information are configured into AR.
The Atrium Core web Services are based on Axis II version 1.5.xx - the Atrium
Core Web Services expose all (or almost all) the public APIs available from
Atrium Core. That covers Reconciliation Engine, Normalization Engine, CMDB
Server (CI and Relationship CRUD, Class manager, Graph query and CI search
...) APIs. There are some additional APIs that are available through Web
Services, but not the Atrium Core APIs: "Impacted Services" for instance.

i believe when you say user..you mean the Assignee Group to get notified
when the incident priority changes...

If so also please make sure you have the Filters to have Notification Tag
info pushed in the NTE sys Individual or Group form accordingly and also
have corresponding Sys Messages required.

We had applied a Notification hot fix on top of 7.1, which uses NTE sys
process control, and implemented similar logic to notify the Assignee

Re: Poor performance while saving Incidents

2010-07-12 Thread Juan Ingles
John,
In the bigger picture it's not really a matter of raw performance at
the DB level -- it's a matter of resource contention.

Some actions performed while inserting or updating an index entry end
up issuing a lock on the resource(s) being used. While it is locked,
nothing else can insert, update, and some times even query.

Nutshell: It doesn't matter if the action only takes .002 seconds if
you have to wait 2 seconds for your turn.

Start increasing the number of concurrent users creating tickets for
your test and you will eventually get to your +1 second.

Juan Ingles

P.S. I don't think anyone is saying that indexes are a bad thing, just
that you have to be careful.

Re: Poor performance while saving Incidents

2010-07-12 Thread Schon, Stuart
I find that its not the number of indexes that is the problem but
inappropriate indexing

Also if you use SLM then you will almost certainly need some additional
indexes beyond the ootb ones once your DB gets over a certain size. We
have added to additional indexes on SLM:Measurement to solve performance
issues related to full table scans that we performed as part of the
incident submit process.

Also check Oracle AWR reports for long running queries this may provide
some answers

Although technically true (takes more time) -- has anybody ever seen an
average index insert take > 1 second to insert the index info?

Meaning -- you submit a record -- it took 1 second.

After adding an index - it now takes 2 seconds.

Index population is raw at the db level (no Remedy workflow involved) --
if I look at actual db inserts -- they are .001 seconds. (normally)

I do not think additional indexes are that bad.

Other things to check:

1.Do you have a lot of Indexes on HPD:HelpDesk? If so
consider reducing any unnecessary indexes. The more indexes you add the

Hi,

Creating incidents is taking a lot of time.

When I create an Incident, it is taking about 20-25 seconds to
save, though I have set the Store LOB in row option from the server

Re: Poor performance while saving Incidents

2010-07-12 Thread John Sundberg

DESIGN DISCUSSION...

Although technically true (takes more time) -- has anybody ever seen an average
index insert take > 1 second to insert the index info?

Meaning -- you submit a record -- it took 1 second.
After adding an index - it now takes 2 seconds.

Index population is raw at the db level (no Remedy workflow involved) -- if I
look at actual db inserts -- they are .001 seconds. (normally)

I do not think additional indexes are that bad.

Try redirecting the output to a file with the complete path name and also
run is silently so it suppresses the command window.. this is done by using
the /C switch to suppress the command window after executing the command..

this command works fine and a file is created when run directly in a command

I haven't done it on Windows but here is the basic logic I would use.

Collect your data (could be into a field)
Output your data to a file on the server (using echo or the notify action)
Use the PERFORM-ACTION-ADD-ATTACHMENT command in a Set Fields action

For more info on the Notify action use the Help -> Contents and Index in

You have the cd command in your string

I think you would want something like:
  cmd /c echo "$tmp_Text For File$">"c:\$Infrastructure Change ID$.csv"

CMDB and AIE baseline white paper

2010-07-12 Thread Timothy Powell
I’m reaching out here.

I recall reading a white paper authored by BMC which gave some performance
measures regarding CMDB activities.

Specifically it detailed some various server configurations and then gave a
number of CI’s processed per second/hour for load, identify and merge
activities.

I do not recall what version of the CMDB and/or AIE the white paper was
authored against. I just recall reading it once.

I need it again, but cannot locate it.

If anybody has this or knows the name of the paper, please share.

Thanks in advance.

Bad customization work can also do this.. for e.g. if there is a search run
during the save, that performs a table scan on a large table, you have a
performance hit.. Its often you see such work from developers who have just
begun working with systems that store data in a underlying RDBMS..

Joe,

I fixed it. The Z: was a mapped drive that pointed to the Reports Working
directory on my Crystal Server (this was set in the Mid-Tier Config Report
Settings page on the Mid_Tier server). I just changed this path to be the
full windows context path and both the AR System and Crystal Reports are
working. What I find weird about the whole thing is that the Crystl reports
never stopped working, only the AR System reports need this working
directory to intialize. Weird.

Thanks.

I used the Report Creator in Mid-Tier to create this report, it should be

Is there a directory I should be granting the Remedy Service Account

Re: ARERR 92 Server Timeout During Database Update

2010-07-12 Thread Joe D'Souza
Kevin,

Also if that does not work, check if the transaction logs on your SQL server
are full. Flush it if necessary. Also check the size and usage of the DB as
well as the log file. SQL 2005 auto sets them to increment, but if the disk
these files are on is getting full, this auto increment would fail. Make
sure that the disk that contains these files has enough free space..

okay so I remember seeing this before but I cannot remember what I did to
solve the issue. I am am trying to change workflow objects, forms, filters

The environment I am in is a Server group configuration with 3 AR Servers
sharing the same DB.

Has anyone else out there had this issue?

Windows 2003 server, SQL 2005 DB.

Do you have to take them out of server groups and then make the changes and
then put them back, something like that?

Good afternoon,

We are working on building requirements for an asset management project. It
looks like a lot of what we are going to need to focus on is less about true
asset management, and more about the budgeting aspects of paying maintenance.
We already use Asset Management to track contracts, licenses, etc., but we are
going to need the ability to do budget forecasting and such, which doesn’t seem
to exist in any of the OOtB applications. I know we can build something in ARS
to tie in to the Asset Management data to do this, but I wanted to see if
anyone here knows of a tool that is already out there that integrates with ITSM

I had the same problem with the Base 7.5 version, when I moved up to the
patch 2 version it worked. I don't know why, I just know it worked.

Just a note here, patch 4 and patch 5 are "very" buggy we had all kinds of
issues with them and left our production on patch 2. We are testing 7.6 Beta
now and hope it is not as buggy.

AR System Reports Error on Mid-Tier 7.5 patch 4

2010-07-12 Thread Bilinski, John CTR WHS/ITMD/ASD
All,

I am receiving this error in IE when I try to run an AR System Report (.arr)
over the Mid-Tier v7.5 patch4 using the Report Selection form:

Error during processing : ARERR [9241] Cannot create report directory
Z:\m11c23c11b16\A08DA5F8C06596786A88BCEE8C7EB04A. Please see your
administrator.

I used the Report Creator in Mid-Tier to create this report, it should be
running. We also have a Crystal report server 2008 integrated with our
Mid-Tier on a separate server and the Crystal Reports run fine.

Is there a directory I should be granting the Remedy Service Account
permission to on the Mid-Tier server to get this to run? Any ideas?

We are running the OOB Tomcat as our JVM and web server.

Thanks.

Subject: SYS Notification Messages Additional field configuration

**
Hi Listers,

I want to add additional fields SYS Notification Messages form so I followed
the below method to configure additional fields into the form list,

1. Open SYS:Form Field Selection form

2. Configure selection type as notification message selection

3. Module Name is Incident

4. Form Name and Select Fields From+ is HPD:Help Desk

5. Menu Label 1 is custom field from help desk form

6. Menu value 1, custom name for the selected field

7. Selection Code, I gave a custom code 20

8. Saved the form.

Field Selection in SYS Notification Form

1. Select Module name as incident

2. Form Name as HPD:Help Desk

3. Select Message body Menu

The configured field did appeared on the SYS Notification Form Menu List.

But the configuration doesn't seems to be ending there, when I select the
option that I created I am juz getting a blank space in the email body, when I
select the field other than I configured I am getting #fieldname#. Any
suggestion on this... I want the configured field to appear once I select. Do I
have to configure anywhere else?

Thanks & Regards,
Raja V

Good afternoon,

We are working on building requirements for an asset management project. It
looks like a lot of what we are going to need to focus on is less about true
asset management, and more about the budgeting aspects of paying maintenance.
We already use Asset Management to track contracts, licenses, etc., but we are
going to need the ability to do budget forecasting and such, which doesn't seem
to exist in any of the OOtB applications. I know we can build something in ARS
to tie in to the Asset Management data to do this, but I wanted to see if
anyone here knows of a tool that is already out there that integrates with ITSM

If you know of any Asset Management integrated budget forecasting tools, please

Re: Easy way for Capacity Planning

2010-07-12 Thread Joe D'Souza
There was a white paper released on sizing a few years ago that you might
want to take a look at. This would offer you guidelines as to what you might
need to consider. While these guidelines would be generic, it would give you
an insight into capacity planning. Besides just record sizes, you might also
want to consider sizes of attachments, and limit those sizes.

If you cannot locate the document, I think I may have a copy of it. Let me
know if you have trouble locating it on BMC's website, and I'll look for it
later on my zip or flash drives where I think I may have saved a copy of
it..

Joe,

We were on 7.5 Patch 4, upgraded to Patch 5. Working with BMC Support since
clicking OK to try and resuscitate the Plugin Server. So far it appears this
particular "feature" of Patch 5 only affects Linux installs. We are running
SUSE 10.

The comment about treating patches with the same respect as upgrades, installs,
etc. is dead-on.

Ultimately though, this "stuff" happens, and that's why we all have lower

Not unless the new remote db was a mirror copy of the original and you
started on there where you left at the original.. If not your only choice is

Re: New Data Import tool

2010-07-12 Thread Joe D'Souza
Older versions of the Dev Studio though have a lot of major issues with even
basic functionality that are resolved with Patch 4. To name a few:

1) Join form qualifications had a bug that was resolved in patch 3 upwards.
2) SQL Menus qualifications had a bug that was resolved in Patch 4
3) Active Link / Filter Guides had a performance issue and would time out
when you open them to edit them or add new Active Links or Filters to them.

These come to the top of my mind..

Rick and Shawn (and all listers) I guess I was too vague in my request to see
how BMC products are used at BMC. So let me clarify.
Obviously they use their own products, but it's more than just simply using the
productsit's HOW you use them. For instance I am interested in the
following:

- Does BMC use multi-tenancy and if so how?
- Does BMC use CI based approvals, or product or operation categorization based
approvals?
- How does BMC performs risk and impact analysis of its changes?
- How BMC uses the BMC Remedy change calendar?
- How are the change assignee and change manager in the Remedy change mgmt app
used at BMC?
- Does BMC implement separation of duties and if so how?
- How does BMC deals with Sarbanes Oxley issues?

This is a very limited set of questions that I think are worth while asking.
Others may have many more. I don't think they would be exposing any
confidential or business critical information. As a matter of fact, many
software vendors do this.

Many times, in almost all my consulting engagements, I have been asked by
customers how BMC uses, configures and implements their own products at BMC,
and of course I cannot give an answer; this has non-negligible impact.

Why not Eating your won food should be a principle for every corporation.

Two examples that come to mind: HP and Oracle. HP embarked in a huge project to
consolidate all its data centers; at the end of that project, they will be able
to tell their clients the hurdles they encountered and best practices of that
monumental task. Oracle used to have a customer database for each country, with
distinct financials and sales apps linked to each DB per country. So it was all
siloed by country. Years ago they embarked in a 5 year project to have a single
database for all the countries with all financial and sales apps ruinning out
of that single database. So now... they are advising their customers to do just
that.

I would really like to know what ITSM and IT operational tools BMC uses. I have
never seen any presentation on that Maybe it's out there somewhere and I
haven't seen it

Re: mid-tier doesn't see crystal XI

2010-07-12 Thread Debnath, Prijit
AR System 7.6.03 (tentatively scheduled to release in late Summer 2010) is
expected to have the ability to display basic list-based and graphical reports
on the web client without the need to integrate Crystal / BOXI. We have
introduced a new Reporting Engine which delivers this capability. The embedded
engine is designed to replace the legacy text-based reporting engine currently
part of AR System 7.5.00 and earlier. In addition to this, an user will also be
able to generate ad-hoc reports subject to permission constraints.

I'll add that I saw the same behavior, I ran 7.5 patch 004 of the mid-tier
installer probably around 7 times till the option for the BOXI server showed up
properly in the mid-tier configuration. I hadn't changed anything from the 6th
to 7th install either, it just decided to finally show up. Needless to say I
stuck with that attempt and have no plans on ever trying it again. Ever.

This is entirely the fault of the mid-tier installer; I had so many problem of
exactly this sort with the various patch levels of 7.1 that I ended up putting
a 7.0.01.002 mid-tier on my CRXI/BOXI server. I'm still using it in
production!! For my dev server I used 7.0.01.008. I have been pointing my
7.5.00.005 pre-production mid-tiers at that last one for testing... it works
just fine since all the 7.0.01 mid-tier is doing is serving up the crystal
report.

I have not tried to update the CRXI mid-tiers to 7.5, and gave up on later
patches of 7.1 as the installers remained bug-ridden - trying to upgrade the
mid-tier from 7.0.01 to 7.1 ignored and wiped out the report viewer. CRXI is
such a pain to install and license that once you get one running, AND a working
mid-tier, I try to leave it alone.

I'd love to tell you that the BMC installers have improved in 7.5/7.6, but they
have not. This week's poster child for worthless installers is BMC Analytics
7.6.01, which skips the entire dialog box set for specifying your db connection
- much as the mid-tier installer fails to detect CRXI/BOXI and prompt to
install the Crystal viewer. All I can recommend is that you try every patch
level of mid-tier that you can find until one works correctly; most of them are
flawed.

I installed Crystal Reports XI then mid-tier on a server for testing purposes
and the mid-tier install and program don't seem to see that Crystal/Business
objects is installed. The viewer isn't available for install and the reporting
options for a local reporting server aren't available after install. Does
anyone know what file/registry entry that mid-tier looks for to say that there
is a local Crystal install?
