[BlindHandyMan] Re: Garbage disposal

2010-03-23 Thread Gil Laster
Betsy,

I have an Insinkerator disposal of unknown age (it was in the house when I
bought it). Twice it has locked up as you describe with the motor humming and
not turning. Each time I was successful to turn the rotor by hand inside the
sink drain to loosen it up. There was no debris in there. My assumption is
that my unit is very old and the seals are damaged, allowing crud or corrosion
to bind the motor shaft. I intend to replace the unit when it does finally
quit.

You mentioned that your disposal is a Kenmore. I subscribe to Sears e-mail
advertisements. Sales on appliances have been occurring a few times each
month. Some include free shipping. It is worth checking out if you want to
get another Kenmore. I have also read that bigger is better (power-wise) if
your previous unit has had trouble digesting stuff.

I cannot help you about a wall hung toilet other than it must need a very
strong wall to mount to and a thick wall for the drain pipe to turn down
through.

It is easier to use the socket and turn it clockwise to cut what is stuck. Done
this several times in the past.

Well the turning it backwards might work. Otherwise a socket with a long
extension to remove the nut on the cutters and someone to hold the hex wrench
in the bottom should allow the cutters to come up. You may not be able to
remove them as a lot of disposals taper in and the upper housing would have to
be removed, which of course requires removing the disposal from under the sink.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] digital recorders

2010-03-23 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Lenny,

Dan misspoke when he cited the new Olympus recorders as being the DM-4 and
the DM-5, the recorders are actually called the DM-2 and the DM-4, for the 4
gig and 8 gig models respectively.

This particular recorder has several advantages from it's predecessors,
namely the DS line of recorders and the DM-420 and 520.

Dan mentioned a couple of them, those being the Text to speech capabilities
and the DAISY capabilities, but some other great things about the new DM-2
and 4 are as follows:

Media card slot for Micro-SD cards, up to 16 gigabytes, Recorders in PCM,
also know as Wave format, MP3 format, and WMA format, as opposed to the 420,
which only does MP3 and WMA recording, and the DS line of recorders which
only record in WMA format.

Over 20 hours of battery usage with the lithium ion battery, as opposed to
it's predecessors, which used on Nickel Metal Hydride batteries.

There is also the recorder's ability to edit files right on the recorder,
*Wave format only*, and a file move option to allow you to manage the files
within the folder structure of the recorder, up to 200 folders for each of
the pre-loaded folders, A through E.

Of course, there are other features that the new DM-4 and DM-2 have, some
useful to the average blind person, and some not so useful, although the
large display and large screen fonts allow for medium to high partials to
use the recorder without the voice guidance/text to speech.

Having said that, and, in case you are wondering, yes, I do sell them.

The anticipated retail price for the DM4 is between 315 and 350 dollars,
Canadian, dealers may sell for less, and between 250 and 295 for the DM-2
Canadian, again, dealers may sell for less.

The anticipated release of the recorders is in June, although I am hoping to
get an advanced demo for the CNIB Technology Conference this year, to
demonstrate, which I'm hoping to record and post to everyone.

In any case, I've placed some links to the DM-4 and DM--2 below, so have a
look at the features and specifications, and decide for yourself.

I should also note that the DM-520 and DM-420 are not as capable as the new
4 and 2, however, they are, in their own ways, very exceptional recorders,
as I own each of the models, from the DS 61 to the DM-520, and now the DM4.

It's just that if you're looking for accessibility, more than the previous
recorders have offered, than the wait is well worth it, and the price is the
same, possibly a few dollars less if you decide to go with the 520 and 420
models, but again, you're trading off the accessibility you would get with
the DM4 and 2.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Painting indoor walls.

2010-03-23 Thread Dale Leavens
Well, again, you aren't likely to get all of the paint off. The usual thing to
do where you have pealing paint is to scrape off the loose and maybe scrub it
down with a wire brush, again maybe a little sanding gently but not directly on
drywall as this will damage the paper surface then after washing down paint
over.

Getting all of the paint off of most surfaces isn't usually practical. If you
don't prepare the surface well though your new paint will begin pealing off too.

If there are four coats since 1986 and pealing someone hasn't done a good
preparation at some point.

  Hi,
We can guarantee there is no lead paint. This paint was put on in 2006, and
we had the home inspected before making an offer. We have to strip the paint,
as it is pealing.
We are in the process of becoming lisenced as foster parents, and the agency

There usually isn't any good reason to remove paint and if it is very old you
probably don't want to remove it for fear you liberate old lead paint.
Generally it is sufficient to wash the paint thoroughly so the new sticks well
although you may also wish to give a gentle scrub with something like 80 grit
sand paper to take off any nibs or other high points bearing in mind the caveat
of the possibility of lead paint.

already there. How would you take all of the paint off and repaint? We are

After reading your last message, 30 years, yes, I'd say a new one is in
order. Matter a fact, you'll be lucky to find a company that will
guarantee one more than 10 years. I just bought one here this past December
at Lows, it cost me just over a hundred dollars, half horse, and only 5 year
warranty. There was a brand at Orchard Supply that I bought at our last
home that I bought, it was called the Bone Crusher. 3 quarter horse, 10
year warranty, and at the time it was around $80. That was back in 2000.
Good luck.

[BlindHandyMan] Re: update on sealing tile

2010-03-23 Thread lvmumford
Hi Tom,

Our tile is in shades of light and medium tones of brown and the epoxy grout
will match the light brown color. We're putting the tiles in our kitchen,
sunroom, and utility room but I asked the Laticrete guy if it could be used in
the bathroom and he said absolutely. BTW, both the Laticrete guy and my
contractor said the best stuff for cleaning tiles was a bucket of water with a
cup of vinegar and a tablespoon or so of an all-purpose cleaner (like Simple
Green) added to it. They recommended it for mopping tile floors as well as
using on bathroom tiles and said the fancy cleaning supplies sold in stores
were a ripoff and often too harsh on the tile and grout. They especially said
not to use anything regularly with bleach in it on bathroom tiles or the grout
would loosen and eventually start to fall out.

The heating mats are in place in the kitchen and sunroom and they begin to set
the floor tiles tomorrow!

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Painting indoor walls.

2010-03-23 Thread Miranda Borka
Hi,
We can guarantee there is no lead paint. This paint was put on in 2006, and we
had the home inspected before making an offer. We have to strip the paint, as
it is pealing.
We are in the process of becoming lisenced as foster parents, and the agency
has asked us to fix the pealing paint and repaint.
Sorry for any misunderstanding.

We have to repaint part of our office upstairs. Part of it is cement and the
other part is wood. It looks like at least 4 or 5 thick layers of paint are
already there. How would you take all of the paint off and repaint? We are
total.

I want to get my husband something to record phone numbers on for his birthday.
I have a Parrot-- I know they are no longer made and that a lot of people
didn't think they worked too well, but I must be lucky because mine is still
ticking and I love being able to retrieve the phone numbers via voice
activation. Is this something the Olimpus can do? If not, what do you
recommend? He has a cell phone (not sure which one-- Verizon is the plan) and
it does not have voice software on it.
Thanks for any advice,

PS. No one had any advice for my question regarding wall-mounted toilets...
can't I at least get a bad joke from anyone... ie... like ... "I don't know

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Using Lawn mowers

2010-03-23 Thread Dale Leavens
Tempting as it is to cut the lawn in bare feet so you can feel where you have
been I strongly recommend against it. After that safety mostly depends on not
running over something else besides your feet. I suppose one cannot be
absolutely certain about that, if you have a child used to leaving things like
marbles or those steel Hot Wheels toys about you might like to have someone
check before you send one through a window.

We have done a lot of mowing with a hand powered reel mower with very good
success and they do make a superior cut but it takes time. they now have them
in up to 18 inch widths now which helps, ours is only 14 inches and Janet still
uses it.

I now have a self propelled rear drive and rear bagger which pretty well would
catch anything run over.

My back yard is fenced which helps and I have raised flower beds on three
sides. I sunk 'I' bolts at 8 foot intervals down two sides and pull thick ropes
across hooking them with bungee cords to keep them more or less tight. I use
this as a means of dividing the width into manageable distances and run back
and forth between them marching them the length of the lawn weather I do it by
hand or with the power mower.

The front yards in my case are comprised of three, tiered like terraces about
20 feet by 50 at the top, something a little narrower, maybe 16 by 50 below the
retaining wall and between the sidewalk and the road is a boulevard which the
town cuts but not as often as I like which is about 20 feet. These narrower
segments make running up and down a lot easier without the need of guide ropes.

I should say that I haven't used ropes for ever but they do save me a lot of
time and reduce the missed spots to about zero.

the raised flower beds keep me from running over them and because I made them
like curbs I can just run one set of wheels along and don't have much trimming
to clean up after.

Hope this is helpful.

Aloha Ron,
I thought exactly what you're saying. Yesterday
we got a flashlight and a mirror trying to see
what might be in there. I'm not afraid of putting
my hand in there and I even ran my finger nail
around the very edge to see if I could find something. No joy.

I think the poor thing may be 30 years old. It's
a Kenmore and I thought about calling someone,
but that will cost me more than a new one.
Please feel free to send more suggestions.

Did you try turning it counter clock wise? Providing the motor turns clock

Going counter clock wise would back it out, or at least free up the jammmed

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Garbage disposal

2010-03-23 Thread Ron Yearns
Most likely you have a chunk of dish cloth or sponge lodged in the cutters. It
could be stuck bearings, but doubtful. Feel down inside the disposal around
the edge and see, no pun intended, if you can find something of the cloth or
may be some plastic like off of some packaging . Feel real good it may be hard
to find. As long as the switch is off this is safe. If it is the plug in
style unplug also if that will make you feel safer.
You likely will need some pliers to pull out what you can to free up the
disposal.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Using Lawn mowers

2010-03-23 Thread Blaine Deutscher
depends if it's electric or gas. If it's electric the only advice I can give
is know your yard and have someone sighted there to go over what you miss.
If you have a long yard go up the one side, down the back, and up the other
side and then the front edge. Once you get back to the beginning of where
you started move the lawn mower over and to the left or right a little,
depending on what side of the yard you started on. Lawn Mowers have a
protective cover over the blade so you're not going to reach under the mower
but if you feel where the wheels are and a little in front you can make sure
that you're cutting grass and not going over a spot already missed. I tend
to stop quickly feel over to the left or the right depending on what side I
just came from to see if I am going in a straight line. Usually I miss a
spot here and there but it's not that big of a deal as the sighted person
will go over what I missed and it takes them a couple seconds. If you have
any further questions feel free to write me.

There usually isn't any good reason to remove paint and if it is very old you
probably don't want to remove it for fear you liberate old lead paint.
Generally it is sufficient to wash the paint thoroughly so the new sticks well
although you may also wish to give a gentle scrub with something like 80 grit
sand paper to take off any nibs or other high points bearing in mind the caveat
of the possibility of lead paint.

announcement I just read, talking about the new DM4 and DM5 is probably
the same. Not only does the DM4 and 5 have audible menus, but they do
text to speech, voice commands, and can read DAISY texts. Seems like the
way to go for me, if I wasn't already using my cell phone for most of
this. Although, my cell phone doesn't have the same recording quality as
the Olympus devices. But just think of it, off-the-shelf technology with
text to speech and DAISY capabilities. Nice job Olympus.

little squares and finish one and move on to the next square. You'll look
like you're dancing because you have to swing a foot around to make sure you

Looks like the DM4 can use voice recog to set up calendar and to-do lists.
Maybe you could hijack that functionality for a contact list.

[BlindHandyMan] digital recorders

2010-03-23 Thread Lenny McHugh
I guess I will start searching for demos of the units. What I really want is
to put in short notes and phone numbers and to be able to access them
quickly. It is a little difficult with the tape recorder and I made the
mistake of purchasing the tab memo a year or so ago. After about two years
it stopped working and it was very slow to retrieve numbers. I do use my mp3
player to listen to books but depending on how the recorder works might also
retire that player. I do believe that the dm420 has an option to play part
of each file as you go through them. I think I would like that feature. Have
to look at the dm2 and 4 models closer.

Betsy: I just got a Stream a little over a week ago, and I was very pleasantly
surprised by the quality of the recordings, it's nothing like a Book Port
thankfully, and they say it only uses like 9.1 meg per hour which is not much
at all. For recording from a phone, I have one of those little black boxes
intended for use with a tape recorder with a switch jack. Presumably, though I
haven't tried this yet, you could plug the microphone cable into the Stream.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Using Lawn mowers

2010-03-23 Thread Lenny McHugh
Oh, I can imagine. One suggestion that should be common sense. Don't let
anyone outside on the shoot side when cutting. Maybe you could call this
perfect timing. A friend who is sighted was cutting the grass. The mower
picked up a small rock and launched it. The local police was driving down
the street when a loud crack and a projectile went through their side
window. Two cops came out of the car with guns drawn. Ed laughs about it now
but at the time having two cops screaming and pointing guns at you is not a
pleasant thought.- Original Message -

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Using Lawn mowers

2010-03-23 Thread Sheryl Nelson
Aloha, Good morning. I lived on a property that
was almost 18,000 square feet. The property was
on a hill with a flat part at the top a hill then
flat then hill again. I would mow the lawn. My
land lord had a gas mower that was very old. I
had someone sharpen the blades and clean it up
before using the beast. I had plenty of people
tell me it would be "hard" for me to mow the
lawn. I've never been to great at listening to
people tell me about what they think I can't do.
I am much better at listening when people are
helping me find solutions. I figured out where
to put the gas and oil, how to start the darn
thing and use it. Before I used it I thought
about safety and here is what I did. I would
never push the mower up hill so that it could not
come back on me. I would have the mower in front
of me on the downward slope of the hill at all
times. If it got away from me on the hill it
would travel down the hill on its own. The beast
never got away from me. I would pull the mower
back up the hill or mow across the hill in a back
and forth motion to get to the top. I mowed in
both directions to be sure I had got most the
grass. My goal was to have cut grass and no
injuries. I felt pretty sure the lawn mower
couldn't come back on me mowing the grass in the
manner described. The first few times I mowed the
grass I was a bit nervous partly because the
machine was so loud. When I was growing up we had
a push mower which of course would have taken for
ever to mow the huge yard I mowed with the gas lawn mower. Have a great day.
Aloha Sheryl

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Using Lawn mowers

2010-03-23 Thread TJ McElroy
Hello Andy,

I am totally blind and I use a push mower and a riding mower.
I just cut the perimeter of the yard, both inside and outside of our fences and
around the pool.

I use a long pcv pole that used to be the hand skimmer for the pool, instead
of my cane.

When using the push mower, I pull it instead of pushing it. After you get use
to the terrain that you are cutting you will get a feel of where the mower is
in relation of where you are. Try to feel where the side of the mower is. Use
the force Luke, use the force.

My last push mower had a flap that would drag the ground if it was pushed. It
was for stopping anything from popping up after the mower went over it. I had
to remove the flap. It was long enough to touch the mower blade when the mower
was pulled.

As for the riding mower I just use the long handle from the old pool skimmer.
It is about 8 feet long and made of pcv pipe. It is very light and I follow the
fence or the pool when I cut around them.

Once the perimeter is done, some one else can get the rest of the yard cut in
a New York minute.

The first two or three times will take the most time. Getting use to the
weight of the mower, the terrain and the noise. Take your time and be careful.
By the middle of the summer you will have it down and be able to finish the
job in half of the time.
I normally use a set of head phones and a walkman type radio while cutting
the yard now a days. By the middle of summer you will be able to do that also.
Hell, you can't hear any thing while the mower is running any way.

Again be careful and if it does not feel right stop the mower and find out what
is going on.

Good luck

- TJ

Now, if you really do not want that chore, make the same mistake as I did.
Many years ago I was cutting the yard. Cutting grass or flowers produces the
same sound, however the reaction from the boss is much different. I was no
longer allowed to cut the grass.

I don't know what you mean by safe. I cut my own grass with one for years
before I got married. The best way I found was to divide the yard into
little squares and finish one and move on to the next square. You'll look
like you're dancing because you have to swing a foot around to make sure you
didn't miss any grass.

Use a mover for years. First I boxed in the flowers and other areas I didn't
want cut with landscape timbers. and cut the grass north to south and east to
west as one would use a sweeper. They tell me the yard looked good.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] digital recorders

2010-03-23 Thread Bob Kennedy
depends on how much you are planning to spend. I know Olympus makes a model
that talks but as I recall it's quite pricey.

I have an Olympus, not sure of the model right now and a friend of mine has
a Sony. They were similar in price but his Sony had the better quality
sound to me. You can find the Sony at Wal-Mart for around $75.

2010-03-23 Thread Dan Rossi
I didn't look at the specs for the DM420 and DM520, but assume the
announcement I just read, talking about the new DM4 and DM5 is probably

2010-03-23 Thread Blaine Deutscher
the olimpus DS 50 has audobol features so when navigating around you're able
to hear what you're doing. It records in stario if that is something that
you like doing, if quality is what you're looking for their not the greatest
with sound so loud noises make it clip. If you record on low volume or no
volume then you will be fine and it won't clip that much. just for a meeting
or a speech it works really well but if you're recording a concert it clips
a little. to the untrained ear it doesn't sound that bad. I have one and use
it for University. I like it a lot and with the USB connection it makes it
great. some recorders you have to install a program and this one out of the
box when you plug it in it opens as if it's a memory stick and you just have
to play around with it for a little while but once you figure out what
folder the recordings go in you will be fine and can save them as you wish
onto your desktop. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask and I will
let you know. If you would like I can make a few sample recordings for you
and send them to your e-mail as an attachment. Let me know. If you're not
wanting to go about it that way check out
www.blindcooltech.com
this site has a lot of sample recordings with differet recorders and mikes.

[BlindHandyMan] digital recorders

2010-03-23 Thread Lenny McHugh
Looks like it is time to retire my tape recorder. I just read a little about
the Olympus dm420 and dm520. Are these the best two options?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Ambutek graphite canes?

2010-03-23 Thread Bob Kennedy
They are similar but technically there is a difference. I have built a lot of
golf clubs using graphite shafts, but only a few carbon fiber shafts. I
couldn't give an accurate difference between the 2 types, because they are both
light weight and obviously if you can put a steel head on the end of one and
swing at over 100 MPH to hit a golf ball and the shaft doesn't break, they are
very durable.

If I was to guess, I'd say the graphite might be more flexible than carbon
fiber. But that's a guess. Both are strong.

Is graphite the same as carbon fiber?
I bought two carbon fiber, two piece folding canes from NFB last Fall.
They're great! The two halves are connected by an alastic cord but they're
still very light and strong. I could even lean on them if needed or use them as
a weapon.
Only $10. Inexpensive when compared to their six piece telescoping carbon fiber
canes for $35.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] garbage-disposals2

2010-03-23 Thread Bob Kennedy
When I worked at Sears, people with disposals would buy the maintenance plan
with their disposals. Some of these models started in the 80s and because they
kept their maintenance plan in place they were able to get a replacement each
time it quit working.

It's cheaper to replace one than it is to have a guy fix it.

The last one I put in was a 3/4 HP model. It had a grinder inside which was
pretty impressive.

Not to drag this thread out but yesterday I talked to a friend of mine
who just had a garbage disposal replaced by a local plumber. They have
about a 5 year old modular home and it came with a garbage disposal.
Only two senior citizens live there but the old machine went ker plunk
and died. so the plumber installed what he called a heavy duty machine
a bigger moter and heavy grinder. did not know they made these in
different sizes. I am told the new machine only takes up a little more
space and they love it. Lee

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Ambutek graphite canes?

2010-03-23 Thread Dale Leavens
Al,

Most recently I have been using their aluminum canes and of course before that
I believe they pretty well all came from Europe, Swedish I think. It is just
that when I opened the package it looked more or less like my aluminum canes
although certainly the main shaft of each segment feels more like it might have
been a thicker plasticated coating. Never having had one before now I just
wondered if maybe I had been sent a fancy aluminum model. They do sell three or
four models all of varying price.

I have just received two of what are supposed to be Ambutek graphite
folding canes. I have never met such equipment before now and hope someone
on the list knows more about them than I.

These appear to me to be metallic although the outer coating might well be
something like graphite. The insertion points are very certainly metal,
  probably aluminum.

Is this correct or did someone put the wrong equipment in the parcel?

  Thanks.
