Lärmdämmmatten *Lärm*? And not *Geräusch*? Yes, that's the first expression I've found. "Lärm" and "Geräusch" both stand for "noise". While "Geräusch" is rather neutral, I'd consider "Lärm" negative. Dealers selling those pads might think we don't like our machine's noise. I appreciate the advice. I've now gone through one by one (using album art aggregator) each album and downloaded an image as close to 300 x300 as was available. In a few cases the the art doesn't show up in slimserver. I've done a complete rescan and they still don't show up. On further investigation the ones missing from slimserver are also missing from a basic windows 'thumbnail' directory view (so I don't think this problem has anything to do with slimserver). I'm a long time fan of Slim - owning SliMP3 x 3 and a couple of squeezeboxes. I stopped posting here after I got a cr**py response from a long -standing list stalwart suggesting that I shouldn't post negative posts for fear of upsetting the developers. Thanks Jack, it really helped that. Shut me up anyway. I've lurked ever since. But I can no longer keep quiet. Slim stuff is cool, Slim stuff sounds great and Slim stuff doesn't compete with Sonos. A Nokia 770 is a really nice bit of kit and it's really clever that you can control Slim with it...and I've got a 770 and I really like it. But the Sonos controller is an awesome way to control music on a Sonos system and the two things do not compare. The 770 can control your windows and your sprinklers and that's really clever. The Sonos Controller can't because all it does is do a really good job, as in a better job, of controlling music on the system that it was built for. I'll buy a couple of Transporters because I want one for our Showroom and I've got a client who is going to love it but I can't get too sentimental about this product. I agree. It's the SB internals I can't do anything about. The remote I can always do something about - replacing it with a universal remote, for example, which I've done (my Marantz RC1400 that came with my receiver handles it just fine). Some have suggested that SB offer upgraded remotes as an optional accessory. I'm all for this, if you want/need an upgraded remote, pay for it. Offer SD-customized Nokia 770s, for instance. [slim] Re: My recipe for a cheap Slimserver
I've been pricing out what I'll call a MarkNAS. The ultimate would be one that's fanless. I'm almost there, so close! The main problem is fanless PCs are hard to come by. VIA makes several Mini-ITX fanless boards. It's the Mini-ITX cases that are a problem though. They are definitely hard to find, and I'd like them to have two features: - fanless PS. Yes, these are out there. - 2 X 3.5" bays for a pair of drives in RAID 1. No, these AREN'T out there. :-( I read here http://www.thejemreport.com/mambo/index2.php?option=com_content&do_pdf=1&id=18 that FlexATX cases can house Mini-ITX boards, so with that in mind I finally found a FlexATX case that has two 3.5" internal bays: http://www.athenatech.us/a100.htm Not the height of fashion but it prevents fall-apart. My main concern is the fan noise - 2 tiny 6 cm screamers along with another tiny whiny fan in the PS. Cheap though, $50. In my search I came across something that really caught my eye: http://www.ibt.ca/ICM168.htm :-O Totally fanless, both board and PS, solid as a brick sh*thouse and uses a Pentium M! There's one big catch though, only one 3.5" drive bay! There's a 2.5" drive bay as well, but I'd need a 250 GB drive to mirror the main drive. Maybe I could use an external USB 2.0 drive, but that would limit RAID 1 speed, although it would still be fast enough for SlimServer. Also that doesn't look cheap. So the search continues for a Mini-ITX/FlexATX case with a fanless power supply and two 3.5" bays. Note: I am limiting my search to items available to me locally or on a national basis. I'm sure there is such an item somewhere in the world, but I'm not importing anything. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25892 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Albums with the same title and multiple CDs
I did search the forums, but didn't really find a satisfactory answer to listing albums which have the same title. I have "Show Artist with Albums" enabled, but when browsing by album, I'm getting: -I Can See Your House From Here by Camel, John Scofield/Pat Metheny- when what I want is to see them on different lines: -I Can See Your House From Here by Camel I Can See Your House From Here by John Scofield/Pat Metheny- This also seems to cause the artwork not to appear when browsing by artwork, as again, they are not listed separately, nor are all the artists listed in the placeholder, so it just looks like the artwork is missing. For multiple-disc albums, I have it set to show them as one album.. but it doesn't work. What does it look for to know if it's the same album? Should the ID3 tags include "Disc 1" "Disc 2" etc.. The system is driven by the cheapest Dell tower available (about £150) with a Lacie Biggest 750G external RAID5 firewire drive currently holding 1415 albums in flac format, running SuSE 10.0 and MusicMagic. All in all, I think that the SqueezeBox was the best bit of hardware I've ever bought. I auditioned it against a Musical Fidelity PRE24 CD player which has external digital inputs and felt that the Squeezebox produced better results than the onboard transport on the PRE24 when feeding through the same DAC (which very shortly went back to the shop!) -- alexfiennes alexfiennes's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4286 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25858 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Tv vs Squeezebox
I also had a Linksys WMA11B as a previous poster mentioned. One of the reasons I eventually replaced it with a SB (actually, 2 of them) was because of its built-in display. The on-screen display of the WMA11B was cool at first, but after a while it became annoying to have to have the TV on all the time to use it. Sometimes I just wanted to play a tune, and it felt like overkill to start the TV and let it warm-up before choosing my music. Also, leaving the TV on all day when I just wanted to have music on in the background (but still see what was playing), seemed excessive. Especially since the bulb in my DLP rear screen projector has a limited lifespan and costs over $300 to replace. I actually wouldn't mind having a video display *option* to supplement the built-in display; however, as others have noted, this kind of feature is somewhat mitigated by its existing web-based functionality. For example, if I want the multi-line interactive display akin to what a TV might display, I can simply log in with my PSP and get those same benefits as well as carry it around like a remote (who needs a Sanos if you've got a PSP). -- Gildahl Gildahl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4102 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25973 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi, Just wanted to add my idea into the mix. What about a Slug (Linksys NSLU2UK) that has been unslung connected to a IDE hard disk via a (ICE BOX) to convert it to USB? I think this solution would cost around £100 - £150 and wouldnt physically take that much space up also. However the scanning of large music collections might be slow but the rest of slim server should be ok. [slim] Re: The remote is crap!
I don't understand everyone's complaints about the remote. It's not that much worse than most of the remotes I've gotten with any other $300 piece of audio equipment. It is kind of lightweight but I haven't seen many posts complaining that theirs broke in anyway. The button layout isn't half bad (I've seen a lot of remotes with just a bunch of square buttons evenly distributed across the remote where it takes forever to find the button you want.) I guess I'm just curious to know what kind of remote you think a piece of equipment at this price point should come with. Some examples would be nice. Now I would agree that the transporter remote should be nicer and apparently it is (backlit.) It's not the nicest looking remote but often it seems that the more expensive something gets in the audio world the more of a minimalist approach the design seems to take on. -- jtfields jtfields's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1584 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26017 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Your point is true, and a definite plus for a NAS device. They are small, quiet, and energy efficient. I think what we're saying here is that if power, flexibility, and price are your objectives, then building a PC from surplus equipment can fulfill this very nicely--sometimes to a degree that is pleasantly unexpected. On the other hand, if small, quiet, and enviro-friendly are your primary objectives, an NAS may fulfill these requirements better--although the points made about low power boards can equalize this greatly. With that said, an older PC that runs in in idle most of the time with no monitor and energy saving features turned on, can be made to be reasonabley energy efficient. Maybe not as much as a NAS, but enough to not noticably affect my electric bill. -- Gildahl Gildahl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4102 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25892 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

As such, a "pure" NAS can be a relatively inexpensive, quiet, and cost-effective way of putting shared storage on a LAN. However, I'm with you on the misnomer thing. It is easy to become entranced with these other NAS devices that add CPUs, memory, and other PC like features. But once you go there, it's not just a NAS anymore but basically a weak networked computing device with a big harddrive. I got myself into trouble yesterday for daring to suggest this on a NAS thread. Why not take the cost and performance advantages of standard, off-the-shelf PC hardware? I'm starting to think the term "NAS" is kind of a misnomer. People get the impression it's a super-specialized device, but if you were to make one out of PC components, it doesn't make it any less of a "NAS". The thing that strikes me about current NAS devices is: 1. High cost. 2. Anemic processor. 3. Lack of flexibility/expandability. The cost has been explained away by saying how convenient a NAS is, that it's a turnkey installation. I guess this is my chief beef with the concept. Philosophically, I've never been one to pay extra for convenience. The OS is something that's a little behind current NAS devices but I think if I was to do this I might go with ClarkConnect. Apparently the bloat is creeping in but it not only comes with Perl installed, it comes with SlimServer installed! Now the latest strike against my PC-NAS idea is that it might be noisy. I was going to counter with a fanless VIA Mini-ITX version which would still undercut a NAS by about $300 but I didn't want to rock the boat too much. :o) -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25892 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: My recipe for a cheap Slimserver
I had also observed many people trying to setup Slimserver on a NAS box, and wondered about trying this. This idea certainly has some charm (small, compact, quiet), but I found that creating a full-fledged PC was both less expensive and far more powerful. It's amazing how much PC you can build these days after scrounging around for spare parts. Started out with * Old (3.5 years) VIA motherboard sitting on my shelf. * Old 4X CD ROM drive and 8GB HD from my box of spare parts. Added * 256MB PC100 Memory, free leftover from a friend's box of spare parts. * 200GB Seagate harddrive, $29 after rebates from a CompUSA "midnight madness" sale. * Case + 250Watt PS, $19 from CompUSA after rebates. * 750MHz Pentium III processor, free from another friend's box of spare parts. * Ethernet card, free from another friend's box of spare parts. $48 total At first, I tried installing Free NAS with the intention of just using this machine as a file server. Free NAS worked like a charm, but since I couldn't run the slimserver on it left me wanting more. So never having tried a full Linux distribution before, I tried installing Mandriva. For some reason, Mandriva didn't like my machine, so after doing some research I settled on SUSE 10. SUSE is not directly supported by Slimserver, but ran smoothly on my machine. Getting slimserver to work required jumping through a few hoops, but all the information to do it was here in the forums. As an aside I have to admit that I absolutely hate setting things up in Linux. Everything seems three times harder than it needs to be (especially if your working with a distribution that isn't directly supported by the software you're installing). But once you have it working, it's fast and purrs like a cat. You also have full-fledged server with which you can do a whole host of other things. All-in-all it's a hoot for 48 bucks. -- Gildahl Gildahl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4102 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25892 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Downstairs: 2-channel SB makes the 2-channel system sound better than it ever has, and I tend to use that system for my "serious" listening. Very pure, direct sound with all the details. Still, the surround system is very nice for general listening and does give a very nice "wrap-around" effect when I'm in the mood for that sort of thing. [slim] Analog VU meters?
Hi all I've just bought a SB3 to add to my two old SB1 players. I can't fathom out how to get the analog VU meters to display. Should this be a "Now playing" option? Or is it a screensaver setting? I'm using SlimServer Version: 6.5b1 - 8713 - Linux - EN - utf8 and the player is on firmware 59, if that makes a difference. Some interesting information above. I'm wondering how quiet the Ready Nas NV actually is. I'm considering getting one and putting it in my living room. How many fans does it have and are they noisy? Is it comparable to having a pc on? Is it as quiet as an Apple mac mini ? My new Qnap 101 & SB3 combo is working a treat, but I have one problem. Whenever I power down the Qnap, on restarting it, Slimserver has lost all it's settings, including all plugin settings and time/date formatting etc. I'm wondering if the changes I make to the config are dynamic, and there is some kind of permanent save function in Slimserver that I haven't found..? You can't reconfigure Slimserver for that (without a "hack", anyway), but you don't need to if you can create a link between the new disk and the folder you have configured for music.
