RE: [slim] itunesupdate plugin problem

2005-02-17 Thread Craig, James (IT)

No, it's not!
I can't (won't?) run the perl script on SP2, but I suspect
line 222:

$iTunesHandle = new Win32::OLE( "iTunes.Application", sub {$_[0]->Quit;})

try this:
$iTunesHandle = new Win32::OLE( "iTunes.Application")
instead.
(The "Quit" was suggested to stop a potential
memory leak, but on SP2 I think it's Quit'ing the existing iTunes not any new
one that was created.)

Back in January, Sean posted that Slim Devices was going through a
"serious growth spurt," explaining the absence from MacWorld San
Francisco. I noticed a similar quiet on the list before the Squeezebox
release - perhaps we can expect a new product soon? :)

Hi, everyone.

I've enjoyed being a part of this mailing list and plan to continue with

it. I do find it easier to stay on top of things when the messages land

in my 'slim' inbox. BUT...

There is a project called WikiCities that the creator of the Wikipedia
has begun. How much interest is there in starting a WikiCity to compile

and refine what we know about the Squeezebox, slimp3, slimserver,
softsqueeze & other related topics? A WikiSlim could be like an FAQ on
steroids. There would be no one maintainer-- we could all add our two
cents without waiting for the FAQ owner to get around to making updates.

Yes, there are ups and downs to this, but what is there to lose,
really? WikiCities lets us use their software & servers to run the wiki

and they get to place ads on the site. The content is free to anyone.

To see what's starting, you can look at WikiMac:

http://mac.wikicities.com/wiki/Main_Page

If you're not familiar with the Wikipedia concept, you could look in the

March issue of Wired where there is a decent article. An excerpt is
here: http://www.wikicities.com/wiki/Wikicities_in_the_news

I think the reason no-one adds to the Wiki is it's a bit too um...

If the Slim staff were to add some hints as to where contributions are

Hi,

I just checked V6.0a2 and there is something wrong the count of artists.

Despite the fact that I selected "Don't include composer, band and
orchestra
in Artists" the count of artist is definitely wrong (501 instead of 111
as
seen in iTunes). When I use slimserver to browse the artist list, I only
see
111 of them (correct but the count still says 501) but if I browse the
artist
list on a Squeezebox then I really see 501 of them and indeed I can see
that
all composers are also included in the list of artist.

Note, I am running the windows version on XP SP2 and I use iTunes (I
have
explicitely specified the path to the iTunes library and the iTunes
music
folder).

Regards,
Michel

Access to Internet radio via SlimServer is unchanged for SB1 and SB2. As

long as there are free stations available, you will be able to freely
access them through your Squeezebox.

The "always-on" functionality, available through the SqueezeNetwork,
allows you to use a SB2 (including listening to radio) without having a
local machine running SlimServer. For now, this is a SB2 only feature.

This would be weird given it's included in the Slimserver CPAN archive.

This is a bit OT, but I'm looking for a utility for mass converting MP3
files.

I have about 8500 tracks, all MP3 all 320kbps, all tagged and set up as
\artist\album\tracknumber - trackname.mp3
I want to find a utility which I can point at the root of this directory
structure and leave for a while. When I come back, I want to find a
duplicate directory structure with all the same mp3's in the right
places but re-encoded at a lower bitrate (so I can easily copy them to
mp3 player/cd for the car). I know this can be done with Musicmatch, but
only on a single folder basis.

The utility must be windows based and preferably free.

Hope this all makes sense. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

--d_info, --d_scan and if you are using itunes, --d_itunes

The iTunes scan, initially will take a bit longer than in 5.4.1 because
of a
recently uncovered bug where itunes was not supplying all the correct
information that is required by slimserver. Thus, itunes serves up the
list of
songs, with its version of metadata and the server still has to do a
read on
each file to fill in the blanks.

not required, but you do avoid the undefined string warnings with the
latest.
you have to have the latest version of biography.zip (unzipped to get

RE: [slim] using iTunes playlist in slimserver

2005-03-16 Thread Craig, James (IT)

Hi Didier,
this really does work!

The first thing to check is that you have the 'use
iTunes' option enabled (at the end of the first page of 'server
settings'.)

On Windows this happens automatically through querying the
registry but perhaps intervention is required on the Mac?

2005-03-16 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Allan,
This is a tricky one!
I checked and I have not changed that part of the code at all.

As I understand it, SlimServer on OSX is run through the default perl
environment so this will not have changed with 6.0?
(on Windows we have moved from Perl 5.6 to 5.8)
And your Mac::Applescript modules are installed independently of the
SlimServer code?

Otherwise one could write some sort of parser that isolates

would be nice to make use of playlists built on the iPod.  An alternative
would be to push the SlimServer playlists that I have created into

I havent seen the code for this plugin, so I'm just speculating.
however, it is
possible to force a plugin to be operating despite any efforts to
disable. The
Scrobbler plugin does this by forcing a setExecuteCallback that is
called
during the require, and does not comply with enable or disable. If this
itunesUpdate is doing something like this as well, there is little that
can be
done aside from disabling it as a known bad module.

In a word, no.

However given the bug stopping LWP::UserAgent working on Windows was
fixed over the weekend it is pretty trivial to get the last version of

However the source on Sourceforge is now quite a bit different from the
last version released so I'm not sure what the SlimScrobbler developers
plan to do with it.

That is interesting,
I could never get it to work as a service and notes in the Moodlogic
plugin led me to believe it was not possible.
Did you change the service settings at all?
What version of Windows are you running?

As to Manuel's original question I have a shortcut to "slim.exe
--d_plugins" in my startup folder, set to start minimized.
Yes you get left with a cmd box in the task bar but that's life
(actually I find it quite useful bcos I like to keep an eye on iTunes
Update/Slimscrobbler)

I did indeed find it started far faster than slimserver.exe.

not the same as the "iTunes" plugin.
iTunes plugin reads from iTunes, iTunes Update writes to iTunes.

Hi James,

I haven't changed anything to the service and I am using XP SP2 Pro. The
only
thing that I am doing in the iTunes tab it to specify the path for the
library
and the music folder. When I initially tried with "find the library
automatically" it didn't work for me. I remember that I exchanged some
emails
with someone on the list to debug it but despite the registry settings
looked
correct the software was returning "" as the path... So since then I
enter the
path where my library is (somewhere in my user profile) and my music
folder
which in my case is D:\iTunes. That's it. Every time I reinstall a new
version
of slimserver I just use the installation parameters that says that it
should
start automatically. I can see the service stopping and restarting
during the
installation. In the control panel the service is there running on
automatic!
Perhaps in the meantime the "automatic search for the library" has been
fixed
but I never bother checking again as specifying the path worked fine for
me.

If you're using iTunes, I wrote a plugin to take a track-at-a-time feed

I find that I use this a lot as it's easier & quicker than working with

RE: [slim] Re: Re: Missing Files On ReScan v6

2005-04-01 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Simon,
I have similar problems.
It seems SlimServer is picking up all tracks after a rescan, but once it
attempts to play or displaying them it is removing them at random from
the database.

See bug 1256
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1256

I'm getting some strangeness here. SlimServer 6 actually shows
slightly more tracks than i have in iTunes but with some weirdness
going on.

I looked up an album this morning (Kia by Blackalicious) and initially
Slim only displayed 3 tracks but reported the album as having 18.
Searching for the album in a few different ways it then decided there
were only 3 tracks in total.

ITunes displays (and plays) all 18 tracks. Nothing odd about the
tracknames as far as i can see.

RE: [slim] Re: Re: Missing Files On ReScan v6

2005-04-01 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Windows XP, music on local hard-drive, iTunes scan only.

I think the iTunes scan is the common link - I believe you're using it?
Problems seem to happen when readTags() is called on a track scanned
from iTunes
- but I can see no pattern in what tracks are affected!

Are either of you running Windows XP SP2?

The logic for track validity has changed in 6.0 - as well as the entire
subsystem that handles file paths to deal with Unicode. Still a few
kinks to work out.

Sorry, that was debug that I accidentally left in a release. This is
displayed when Softsqueeze detects that it needs to automatically reset
the preferences. It should only happen rarely. Are you switching between

Softsqueeze 1.x and 2.x versions? That could cause the reset to happen.

RE: [slim] WPA or WEP encryption - any issues with SB1 (firmware 40)?

2005-04-06 Thread Craig, James (IT)
I have WEP enabled, I believe WPA is not supported for SB1
(I assume it's unlikely to be at this point now that SB2 is out)

You can't use 'shared-key' encryption either - this got me for a while.
Other than that it was painless.
I only use 64 bit encryption (lazyness).

A while ago, a tried setting up some encryption on my wireless network,
but I couldn't get SB to connect to a 64-bit or 128-bit encrypted LAN.
(I think, at the time, I was still on firmware revision 39). I ended up
disabling encryption, so now I'm back to MAC filter. When I tried the
encryption, I was on MAC filter plus encryption.

Can anyone confirm whether this works or not? I guess it must work at
some level, as I haven't seen any posts about it on the lists
recently...?

So if someone can let me know that it definitely works ok, then I'll try
and get it up and running again on my home LAN.

Are there any "preferred" encryption methods? e.g. 64-bit, 128-bit,
WEP, WPA or whatever?

Cheers!
Dan.

Not sure what problems James had with Shared Key but it works perfectly
well
on my set up: SB1 and Netgear WG602 Wireless Access Point. Obvious I
know
but just make sure that you use the same hex code on both the access

RE: [slim] itunes settings suggestion

I am starting to share the same position as Steven,

I wonder if it would be possible to have a 'scan manually' option in
the server settings>itunes section This could comprise of 2 radio
buttons beside each other one for manual and the other for reload
interval with an input field.
At present I have itunes reload interval set very high (10) in
order to avoid the server rescanning every time I use itunes to listen
to music. Whilst this works I think the other system will be clearer
for new users.
I still want the benefits of itunes integration namely playlists and
adding music via itunes (tagging etc) but not the continual rescanning.
Any thoughts?

RE: [slim] itunes settings suggestion

2005-04-11 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Setting it to 0 doesn't disable the scan in case anyone was wondering.

What's the --noscan parameter supposed to do ?
It certainly doesn't stop the initial scan.

I am starting to share the same position as Steven,
my iTunes rescan takes about 90 seconds during which all players stop
(no music, no menus).

What does setting the interval to 0 do - could we have this as disabling
rescans if it doesn't already do so?

I wonder if it would be possible to have a 'scan manually' option in
the server settings>itunes section This could comprise of 2 radio
buttons beside each other one for manual and the other for reload
interval with an input field.
At present I have itunes reload interval set very high (10) in
order to avoid the server rescanning every time I use itunes to listen
to music. Whilst this works I think the other system will be clearer
for new users.
I still want the benefits of itunes integration namely playlists and
adding music via itunes (tagging etc) but not the continual rescanning.
Any thoughts?

RE: [slim] iTunes - Played Count

2005-04-12 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Toby,
Firstly there is no 'played count' in SlimServer (or if there is one in
the database it's not implemented that I know of?).

Secondly, you can get the played count in iTunes to be updated by
SlimServer by using my iTunes Update plugin:
www.jamescraig.co.uk/SlimServer

I've currently got slimserver configured to use iTunes. Once a track has
been played in slimserver does the "played" count in iTunes get
incremented and if played in iTunes does the "played" count in
slimserver get incremented?

Thanks

Yes it does.
When you install, there is a tick-box marked 'run automatically', this
is effectively whether to installl & run as a service or not.

I have my amplifier, dvd player, vcr & cable box hidden in a cabinet.

Maybe I

[slim] SqueezeboxG display corruption

2005-04-18 Thread Craig, James (IT)
I noticed some weird display corruption on my SqueezeboxG over the
weekend:
>From time to time the display would 'roll' up and down, like a TV that
had lost vertical sync.
Does anyone know what causes this?
I've recently moved all my hi-fi/squeezebox/router components and ramped
up the scrolling refresh rate.

Also, what does the little black box wrapped around the power lead do?
I moved it a bit further away from the squeezebox so it was hidden down
the back of my hifi cabinet.

Have never seen this on SqueezeboxG. Could be a hardware problem.
If it's a Squeezebox2, the latest nightly releases include vertical
scrolling as you move up and down through the user interface. That's a
feature!

That sounds like "choke" that reduces RF interference. Moving it may
change the RFI emitted by the player, but shouldn't be a problem.

I use CDex and EAC on Windows boxes, either will get the CDDB/freeDB
data where possible. On Linux, I use grip

Then I use flacfrontend on windows
to compress and tag.

There are lots of ways to do it.

Slimserver 6.1
OS X 10.3

I have mac::applescript::glue installed and "itunes update" is showing

But it still doesn't seem to work... Itunes is not being updated after

Any suggestions?

RE: [slim] ITunes Confusion

2005-04-22 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Patrick,
The 'iTunes' plugin that comes with the standard installation is for
reading iTunes library & playlists into SlimServer.
The 'iTunes Update' plugin, which must be installed separately, is for
writing SlimServer info back to the iTunes library.

I'd suggest you enable the --d_itunes debugging option and check the log
for errors.

What does the use iTunes library and the various settings in the base
slimserver actually do? Is it different to the iTunes update plugin?
Does one depend on the other?

I'm trying to use iTunes playlists with slimserver, and I can't see any
of them in browse playlists. I've set the iTunes xml file location and
the iTunes Music directory (which is outside the normal slimserver
path) correctly (I think). I haven't installed the plugin.

I have slimserver V6.0.1 branch running on FC3, iTunes on XP.

I'm obviously doing something wrong - can someone point me in the right
direction please?

Thanks Craig,

I updated to latest subversion this morning, restarted slimserver, and
the iTunes playlists have all come up.

So not quite sure what the problem was, but it's gone away now.

Does anyone know how I can stop slimserver creating empty Shoutcast
playlists though? I'm not using Shoutcast at all, but it insists on
creating an empty plylist directory for some reason.

2005-04-25 Thread Craig, James (IT)
I also see this on XP - SqueezeboxG seems very sluggish when I haven't
used the server for a while.

Something to do with memory being swapped out perhaps?
(SlimServer process loses about 40Mb of memory in Task Manager when it's
inactive.)

On the other hand my old character display Squeezebox seems much quicker
from the same server?

I suspect that's a slightly different problem - if you run with --d_info

OK, I see this too - since upgrading from 5.4.1 to 6.0.1 (released) - I
use
a dual PIII-733 box running Windows 2000 Pro in 1GB of RAM.

I notice it particularly when navigating from Browse Music, Via Browse
Artists to the list of artists. A several second delay (may be up to 5)
whereas it used to be nearly instant on 5.4.1.

I can confirm that this is the same on SB2, SB1 and Slimp3 (all running
from
the same server).

Have you changed the default iTunes library scan interval?
With it set to the default of 60s, SlimServer will be scanning the

Perhaps I am expecting too much in which case please feel free to say so
! I'm a longtime happy slim owner - up until recently I've run the 5.4
server on a martian netdrive (low power linux box), but, for closer
integration with itunes and my ipod etc, I've decided to experiment
with putting the server on my new mac mini, where I also intended doing
the ripping from within iTunes using blacktree's lame plugin. I have a
slimp3 and a SB1. 6.x releases on my martian seemed to crash a lot when
trying to open radio streams, so now seemed a good time to move across,
and I also took opportunity to copy music from my 10/100-only
accessible Martian to an external firewire drive.

So far so good - after remembering to open both ports on my mini's
firewall (original slimp3 only needed 9000, hence much confusion on my
part) and installing 6.0.2, setting iTunes to look to music I've placed
on external firewire drive all works nicely. Live search is great ! (but
doesn't work in Camino yet?)

OK - now I figured I'd test the end-to-end workflow, ripping a CD and
observing it turning up in itunes and slim with no extra copying. And
it works ! Yay. But, while ripping it basically seems impossible to do
anything with my slims whatsoever. In fact, they both blackout and lose
connection sporadically as the rip progresses, I _think_ coordinated
with the write of file and tag info - is this simply because the itunes
communication with the server is thrashing during the encode ? Is there
anything I can do here ? Anyone in same boat ? I'd expected that if I
was listening that the rip perhaps would go more slowly but that the
server would still be able to serve with a reasonable 'nice' level but
no can do it seems - moreover I even lose the displays completely.

This all makes me a little worried that my mini is not going to work
out as a server if it's doing anything else which is a tad disturbing
given that it's a 1.42GHz with a gig of memory and using external fast
firewire drive.

Am I missing some way of optimising my setup and workflow? I'm also
very curious about other mini owner's experiences of running the server
- I'm almost contemplating sticking an old laptop on the network ONLY to
act as a music server, to be honest

Thanks for a great product, despite my grips above! and for all the
superb support,
-g.

No, the scan just checks for the modified time changing on the XML file.

This seems like a really sensible suggestion as the user's iTunes
activity is likely to come in bursts when adding tracks or modifying
tags. I'd suggest opening this as an enhancement request...

>Actually - I'm curious now - doesn't the perl script simply check the
>iTunes cached file tables for changes, or is it plowing through all the
>subfiles on the disk ? Can I make it do just the former if it's doing
>the latter ?

The scan checks the iTunes XML file.
As I understand it, any new tracks are added to the database and the
file scanned for tag info
(the XML does not contain all the tags SlimServer requires - which ones
are missing I wonder?)
If a track is already in the database it is ignored unless the file
modified time has changed.
This is actually pretty quick if 99% of your library has not changed.

What I find kills SlimServer performance is scanning of the playlists -
I have a number of thousand+ track playlists and when they are scanned
is when I lose connectivity.
One enhancement already suggested is reading only selected playlists
from the XML.

>Another thought - on the mac platform, wouldn't it be possible to
listen
>for applescript notices/events or something to know when itunes is in
>process of ripping or itunes-LAME is doing it's thing, and suspend any

The Slim developers like all the core functionality to be cross platform
so I doubt that would be favoured.

Unless this is covered in the manual?

I think lame.exe is needed to interface with the lame_enc.dll - normally

RE: [slim] Slim server, Safari 2.0 and Tiger.

2005-05-12 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Steven,
Do you have a populated client playlist displayed when you open the
interface?

My experience (Windows/Firefox) is that this is validated against the
database before display.
Subsequent re-opening of the interface or the initial one with an empty
playlist are much faster

Hi,
I did a bit of experimenting.
It seems that it only takes this long to open the web interface the
first time you use it since starting up the machine and since I may not
go to the web interface first thing it will be later on in the day.
I'll try and use the Web interface tomorrow first thing and see if it is
different.
At any time after that even after clearing the cache the web interface
comes up within seconds.

Could the sever be getting paged out or something?
As I say it's no problem I was just wondering if anyone else had noticed
this.

Just upgraded to iTunes 4.8 and now I can only play the selected song,

major problem - anything else I should check?

There's a bug for the playlists issue, the folders I doubt anything can

Running Windows XP and using Firefox to browse the Default interface

Closing firefox and restarting it seemed to get the web interface

Seemed like a lot of the icons weren't getting loaded and the page would
never finish loading
Default2 stopped working at all for me

RE: [slim] Possible to play songs directly from connected iPod?

2005-06-10 Thread Craig, James (IT)
Playing songs from a mounted iPod should certainly work but my
experience with 6.0 is you can't play files without adding them to the
SlimServer database.
You can force SlimServer to play files it doesn't know about, but this
action adds them to the database.

Possibly in 5.4 but not in 6.0
I just tried it, and playing the track adds it to the database.
Makes sense because all SlimServer's work is done via the database now.

It's probably not a problem (as well as being unavoidable at this point)
but the original poster did say not to put them in the database!

In fact the track did disappear after I deleted it, the 2nd time I
subsequently navigated to it in the library.

Background database maintenance is a future enhancement I believe?

I've only used the ones linked from SlimDevices before (which don't) but

Do I create a custom map that includes the original one?

As I recall, you need to be on the 'now playing' screen, where pressing
'add' removes the current track.
However holding it down moves the track to a playlist called 'Zapped
Songs'.

You should then be able to browse that playlist in the usual manner
(it won't exist if you've never zapped anything)
