[Elecraft] K2 KPA-100 5B, 5T 5R
I'm pretty sure I know what 5B, 5T 5R do but what is the trigger, for instance, for setting 5T and 5B high and 5R low prior to transmitting with power over 11W? Is it band specific? The reason for asking is that they're working correctly on 80m but not on 40-10m. They are working correctly in TEST mode on all bands, incidentally. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/K2-KPA-100-5B%2C-5T---5R-tp14391710p14391710.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Yes, I have a microHAM DigiKeyer cable on order. I'll relay my experiences with both the KUSB and the digi keyer and the various progs. Just I seem to have picked up one hell of a stinking cold and have even inventoried the kit contents yet (although I have check against invoice). I'm not even going to touch it until I feel up to it, which I hope will be this weekend. Serves me right for moaning about delays! On 18/12/07 04:48, B. I know you are a Macintosh user (and Cab-converter user!) so I hope you'll also relate your experience with the MacLoggerDX integration and the results from your first contest. It could use some attention, as I have learned more since I performed the last ones after the SSB installation. The long term view is that the K3 will become the primary operating / contesting rig, and the K2 will be used as a back-up and to search for other stations / multi's while in the contest. So I need to be cognizant of how much I spend on a K2 only solution at this time. I do understand I need the following; * Computer, soundcard, and software * K2 needs an alignment, and turn on and setting of the RTTY filters * Interface between the computer and the K2 * RTTY software Anything I didn't consider? Nope, that pretty much covers it. 1. Don't scrimp on the sound card, you get what you pay for. 2. I've read through the RTTY filter setting how to's. Somebody needs to do a step by step like N0SS does for CW and SSB. 3. MicroHam makes some pretty good stuff. If they'd been around when I got into the digi side of things I probably would have purchased an interface from them instead of RigBlaster. Once again don't go cheap, you get what you pay for. I know there will be folks who say build your own. There is a world of difference between the home rolled interfaces and the commercial variety from a quality and feature set point of view. 3A. If you're going to do SSB contesting get a DVK capable software package or interface. The MkII MicroHam has one built in. I use the computer and N1MM. 4. Take a look at contesting software like Writelog($$$) or N1MM(free) which include RTTY capability, either through the MMTTY engine or natively. - -- R. [Elecraft] K3: cw man has microphone question
Okay...all this microphone talk piqued my interest (yes, that is spelled correctly). I bought my mic long, long ago. Back then, as I recall, Heil only offered one element in a boom. I have the BM10K (just the boom, not the headset). I opened it up today and note that the element is an HC5. I see that the specs are: HC-4 Specifications: Type: - Dynamic. Copper wound bobbin, moving coil transducer Frequency: 500 Hz to 3,800 Hz with 10 dB rise at 2,000 Hz. Sensitivity: -66 dB Nominal Impedance: 2,000 ohms @ 1,000 Hz. Size: .530 x .850 x .310 HC-5 Specifications: Type: - Dynamic. Copper wound bobbin, moving coil transducer Frequency: 350 Hz to 4,000 Hz with 6 dB rise at 2,000 Hz. Sensitivity: -68 dB Nominal Impedance: 2,000 ohms @ 1,000 Hz. Size: .530 x .850 x .310 Not much difference, but two questions: 1. Can you actually hear a difference, and 2. With the K3, does it matter since there is an 8 band EQ on tx? Could one tailor the an HC5 to sound like (close to) and HC4 or vice-versa? Re: [Elecraft] K3: cw man has microphone question
The Heil web site has audio clips you can compare. Yes, there is a huge difference in the way they sound. One is almost broadcast quality wide range and the other in pinched into the most productive frequencies. It sounds harsh but gets through better. Some of the Heil mics have a switch so you can go back and forth but you can't do anything (within a small range with the equalizer) to change them. [Elecraft] PSK audio problems with K2
Can anyone shed any light on this please? I have connected tx and rx audio from/to the computer via isolation transformers on both audio in and out. Rx works fine. However, I have hit a problem trying to get acceptable transmit audio quality. I have the K2 stripped back to 10W at the moment so am not using my external KPA100 in order to remove that from the equation. I am feeding the audio from the computer via the isolating transformer straight to the microphone header with the microphone removed. I have turned the compressor off in all modes. I have no ALC showing and have tried the power control in various positions. The audio is extremely rough with various artifacts spreading widely above and below the tx frequency. I have the K2 feeding into a 100W Bird dummy load. I have listened both with my K1 with a few inches of wire as an antenna and my TS-480HX in the car parked outside. Same grotty received audio. I have checked the carrier balance on the ssb board. Although still audible in the K1¹s receiver I have minimised it for usb and lsb. I note that I can eliminate it almost altogether for lsb, but then the level at usb is high. So it¹s a compromise as I have read it would be. I have tried both my desktop pc (a mac) and my Dell laptop (XP) - no difference. I have listened directly to the audio output from the computers it sounds right. I must have used psk31 on a dozen or more radios in the last ten years or so, but never hit this severe a problem before. Listening to my ssb speech via the HM12 microphone, it doesn¹t sound great, but yet I am using the K1 to listen to it with so that¹s not too surprising. I don¹t use ssb at all except mobile, so have had no operating experience of the K2 in this mode. I am wondering if the problem lies deeper somewhere. I have googled, but hit nothing useful. Bob, Those outputs are controlled by the firmware and as far as I know, they are not band dependent. If you have a band dependency on these signals, look for some other cause - RF in the shack perhaps? A problem with the AUXBUS signal? Is the 8R line from the base K2 being properly received by the KPA100? If the 5T and 5R signals are not correct, then look for a possible problem in the T/R switch. If you have an older KPA100, then the new (past year) T/R switch design should be installed (KPA100UPKT). Re: [Elecraft] PSK audio problems with K2
Stephen, I believe you may be overdriving the microphone input of the K2. Do you have any attenuation between your soundcard output and the K2 microphone input? On the output (K2) side of the transformer connect a series resistor about 10k in value and a 1k across the wires to the microphone. That will drop the soundcard level down to about 1/10 of the soundcard output and keep from overdriving the microphone input. Reduce the 1k resistor if the soundcard still overloads the mic input of the K2. 73, Don W3FPR Stephen Prior wrote: Can anyone shed any light on this please? Could one tailor the an HC5 to sound like (close to) and HC4 or vice-versa? Yes, the K3 TX equalizer is very handy in this regard. Keep in mind that it allows you to not only create other microphone responses, but more importantly customize your transmit audio to the combination of your individual voice and the microphone characteristics. Look up my prior post (just after SS Phone) about tweaking the TX equalizer a bit even with the HC4 element to optimize it for my voice frequencies. 73, Ed - W0YK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RF in the shack is unlikely because I've only got as far as running the KPA-100 into a dummy load. The indicated and measured SWR doesn't get worse than 1.1:1 on all bands. The fact that it works up to 100W on 80m tends to rule out an 8R problem. I have noticed that 8R (U1-27) is around 1.22V on 80m (over 11W) and 1.69V on 40 - 10m. Is this significant? Is the AUXBUS signal band dependent? Is the AUXBUS the signal which initiates the switching of the appropriate LPF relays in the K2 and the the KPA-100? 5T (and 5B) should go high when the KPA-100 operates over 11W; conversely 5R should go low. It only happens this way on 80m. On 40-10m over 11W, 5T and 5B remain low (0.0V) and 5R stays high, so the KPA-100 doesn't switch into high power mode. The KPA-100 is less than 6 months old. 73 Bob MM0RKT ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] k2 - pll reference oscillator problems..
hi, everyone.. i am now at the alignment and test phase, part II... and am having a little problem.. under the 4MHZ oscillator calibration, i hooked up the frequency counter probe and plugged it into TP3.. but i get a zero reading.. well, the digits fluctuate in the 10ths place.. but it's pretty much zero.. so i read that i could have a problem with the PLL reference oscillator. i am guessing that my probe is good, as it worked in the previous testing.. so i went to the trouble shooting section.. and built the RF little probe.. (by the way, i LOVE how elecraft uses spare pieces of building materials to let you build your own probe!) under the pll reference oscillator and VCO section on page E10.. i did the following measurements.. reference oscillator output - 1.274v - expected value - 0.8-1.8v . OK VCO output - .318v - expected value - 0.30-0.40v - OK VCO buffer Output - 0.030v - expected value - 0.60-0.75v - BAD i tried following around on the schematic, but i am not sure where to go at this point.. can anyone give me some pointers as to what i should be looking at? thanks! sergio..kb8qpt ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 Mystery Problem
Hi All, There are at least two of us here in Tucson with K3's. I have #96, and John, K7SVV, has #148. Recently, my K3 developed a problem where it wouldn't turn off using the power button. At first it would turn off, but cycle back on by itself after a couple of seconds. Then it just wouldn't power off. The LCD display would go blank when you pushed the power button to turn it off, but the backlighting would stay on. The radio had to be disconnected from the power supply in order to completely turn the radio off. When the power supply was re-connected, the K3 would come on immediately. A couple of days later, K7SVV began experiencing the same problem with his K3. Both of us were exchanging emails with Elecraft support, but nothing they suggested seemed to solve or clearly identify the problem. Both of us made successful firmware updates, but that didn't make any difference either. The performance of the radios was not otherwise affected. They both worked just fine. They just wouldn't turn off. Then, as suddenly as the problem appeared, it disappeared! Now, both K3's are working A-O.K. We don't know what caused this problem to start or stop, but one possibility could be static electricity. According to Elecraft support, we are the only two people who have experienced this problem, at least as far as they know. So, my question is this--has anyone else had any problem whatsoever with their K3 not powering up or down correctly? Possibly someone else out there did have the problem, or a similar problem, but perhaps it stopped before you felt the need to report it as a problem. If anyone has experienced any kind of issue like this, we would like to hear about it. It just seems incredibly strange that the only two occurances of this would be with two people only a couple of miles apart. Maybe the Bermuda Triangle has moved! Re: [Elecraft] PSK audio problems with K2
Don Well, once again you've come up trumps! I did as you suggested but have ended up finally with a 1:20 potential divider and the audio sounds much like it should do, although I feel it's not as good as it was with my TS-480HX but I am being very picky! I just got a -22dB IMD report from a DJ on 40m in a noisy band so it's at least adequate. I am (just) not showing any ALC and have set the output power control to 30W. So far I have been using LSB, now I need to set up those RTTY filters properly! Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mystery Problem
I had this problem with #23, when I initially powered it on you couldn't power it off with the power switch. The cause turned\out to be that I had turned the sub receiver AF and RF gain controls full clockwise and through some quirk in the firmware, since there was no SUB receiver, the power off function was inhibited. The solution was to turn those controls full CCW. Wayne was the one who spent a lot of time with me solving the problem. So you might want to check that, I haven't tested to see if the problem recurs in mine if I move the controls off CCW. Ah, brings me back to my software/firmware development days. Possibly someone else out there did have the problem, or a similar problem, but perhaps it stopped before you felt the need to report it as a problem. There are NO bugs, only features Doug W6JD -- Original message -- From: David Yarnes [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi All, There are at least two of us here in Tucson with K3's. Hi Vic, We now have a simple Windows based utility program to unlock TX outside the U.S. limits for use on U.S. MARS and by those outside of the U.S. Run it once and the rig is opened up. (It needs RS-232 / USB communications to the rig as usual.) It also has a button to re-enable the U.S. limits. Note that the final legal responsibility of where they TX is on the user. (Note: the K3 will still block high power TX in the CB band..) We are testing the final version right now. I'll also post to the email list when its ready. 73, ERic WA6HHQ -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Eric Wayne, will there be a 'MARS' type band limit capability available sometime? Re: [Elecraft] Re: Band Limits - MARS ?
Hi Eric, We now have a simple Windows based utility program to unlock TX outside the U.S. limits for use on U.S. MARS and by those outside of the U.S. Firstly, you ought, if possible, to allow the user more than unlocking/locking of the US limits. If I take my K3 to a country which *requires* limits, e.g. in some places 6 meters is not allowed, then it would be necessary to limit the K3 accordingly before importing the K3 to such a country. Secondly, can this easily be ported to MacOs and/or other OSs?
