Re: [Elecraft] start with straight key or paddles?
I started out using a straight key 33 years ago, but I see absolutely no reason why you shouldn't just skip the straight key and start using a paddle/keyer combo right away. Most rigs come with built-in keyers these days, and if your rig does not, it's very simple to buy and build one (my favorite is the PicoKeyer from hamgadgets.com). And in the worst case scenario, you can always use one side of a paddle as a straight key. One reason I advise people to learn to send using paddles is that they'll send better code right off. The second reason--and perhaps the most important--is that the paddle is so much easier the arm and wrist than a straight key. That makes working CW more fun, and if something is more fun, then you'll tend to do it more. 73! Dan KB6NU = President, ARROW Comm. Assn. Admittedly, I have an $80 Straight Key and some $80 paddles, but the SK needn't be fancy to go from zip to 10 WPM. You should be able to find something (my first one was $4.95 at Radio Shack, but that was a few years ago - Currently, it's a chrome-plated Bencher straight key). Can you save the $80 from MFJ and get CWGET (Free)? It requires a computer or laptop, but will read what you send if it's any good at all. (Maybe I'm the only lawyer who has tried to build a K2). Your lawyer comment makes me think of a funny story from the 1990's. Yes, lawyers _ARE_ different. We sell software, and there is a license agreement. It's about 3,000 words, and contains the phrase "on your own data" (among the other 2,996 words). One customer, who was a service bureau (operates on other people's data) had a problem with that phrase. Their lawyer sent a suggested addendum to our license containing about 2,000 words listing and defining the owners of the data on which our product could be used under that license. I studied the document at length, and it appeared to express things fairly, but something just didn't sit right. So, I called her on the phone and suggested we strike the four offensive words and run the license agreement without her additions. She said, "That's exactly what we want. For those of us who use the K2 as a base station rig, or connected to a hefty battery (like mobile installations), it's easy to forget that one of the design criteria of the K2 was efficient use of power for emergency/portable use. The other Excellent performance numbers were certainly in mind, but we "tied-to-the-grid" operators often forget the battery efficiency design goal. Sure, Wayne and Eric could have used different R, C, P and J numbers on the various boards to make this sort of error impossible, but the extra battery drain of utilizing them wouldn't have been worth the effort. Instead of P1-P7 (Control) and P1-P6 (RF), we'd have P1-P7 (Control) and P8-P13 (RF), driving the receive current up by 28%! Similarly for resistors. Rather than R1-22 (Control) and R1-116 (RF), we'd have R1-22 (Control) and R23-138 (RF), again, driving the efficiency down by another 16%. I could continue with analyses by Capacitor (22%), Diodes (2.25%), etc., but what's the point? We need to support our battery-bound brethren. Don't forget the weight factor too! Each VFO step is another freq. Very little dial twiddling needed to QSY up one, two, three or so "channels". Once you've zero-beat the "group" on any freq (at 10Hz rate), going back to 1KHz rate will keep them zero-beat (if you pick the right channel. The 'x' in 10.1x2.7 and 10.1x7.2 can stand for any number that results in a legal operating frequency inside the 30m band. This means that ECN/30 could meet on any one of the following frequencies: 10.102.7 10.107.2 10.112.7 10.117.2 10.122.7 10.127.2 10.132.7 10.137.2 10.142.7 10.147.2 I've found that I've been run off the net frequencies I've picked on 30m a few times, so to make it easier to find the net and avoid QRM - I took a hint from another member on the elecraft list and decided to pick frequencies that aren't "cardinal" frequencies (e.g. frequencies that end in 5.0 or 0.0 like 10.115.0) where you are likely to run into non-QRP ops with less than sensitive radios when compared to the elecraft kit radios. The first frequencies I tried one week were just randomly picked - but when I realized 5 minutes before the net that week that I didn't remember what frequencies I posted to the list, I decided to just pick something that was easier to remember. Since many elecrafters are QRP ops, I figured that 72 was easy to remember - and likewise - 27. That's why the ECN/30 net can meet on any of the 30m frequencies that end in 2.7 or 7.2. Also - because it is easy to get run off a frequency when running a QRP net, I want others to know that we can very quickly re-establish the net on another frequency that is pre-determined - that's why there's more than one net frequency - in case the frequency is in use - or in case a less than 'sensitive' operator, digital station, or DX/pileup runs us off the frequency we are trying to use. I hope this explains my reasoning and makes it easier for everyone to find the net. 72/73, Daniel AA0NI Oklahoma City ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Fraser said: I don't expect the K2 to have lab grade performance, nor to outperform high price rigs. Dan said: I don't know about your expectations, but mine are quite high. I _DO_ expect my K2 to outperform high price rigs. Fraser said: Hi Dan, well in many respects the K2 does outperform other rigs, but unfortunately in terms of transmitted phase noise it does not. This is not an issue at low power, for which I think the K2 was originally designed, but becomes noticeable when the K2 is used to drive an external linear. My findings have been backed up by off reflector replies from others. I'm very impressed with the K2 on receive. Dan said: Well, the K2 is the most expensive and best rig I've ever owned. My previous rig, an Astro-Swan Cubic 103, cost $600 in 1980, and the K2 blew it away (to eBay, of course). Fraser replied: FB Dan, I remember I used to dream of having a 103, one of the few QSK rigs around at that time. I'll be really happy if/when i can use my K2 on QRO. Meanwhile it's a great /P rig. Finally, Dan sez: As long as we are both happy. One of the reasons I got the K2, was that the ole Cubic almost never put out over 20 W. I just didn't ever need to twist up the wick. It did just fine at about 9 o'clock. One time, I forgot to twist it at all - It was fully CCW - And I got 339 from a JA on 750 mW. Cool! I called Ten Tec thinking modern DSP would work wonders, and they sent me a Jupiter. When I called back for the RMA, the tech that got THAT call said, "Of course the Jupiter doesn't have better ears than your Cubic". Gaaghhh. The K2 has been wonderful, and I NEVER turn it above 5W (well, hardly ever). Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 ps: I think I'll go back to Top-Posting, flames or not. Re: [Elecraft] Ultimatic Keying.
The difference between iambic and Ultimatic keying is that when you hold down both paddles, the Ultimatic keyer sends a series of elements corresponding to the last paddle closed instead of sending alternate dits and dashes as an iambic keyer would. For example, the sequence L on, R on would cause an iambic keyer to send di-dah-di-dah. An Ultimatic keyer would, however, send di-dah-dah-dah. If you count the number of paddle movements, you can see where this might be advantageous. There's no advantage when sending a K. The sequence is R on, L on, L off, R off for both iambic and Ultimatic keyers. Take X, however. When using iambic keying, it's R on, R off, L on, L off, R on, R off. With Ultimatic keying, the number of paddle movements is the same as for the iambic - R on, L on, L off, R off. - a savings of two paddle movements. You just hold down the left paddle a little longer for the X then for the K. Another keyer that now supports Ultimatic keying is the N0XAS PicoKeyer (www.hamgadgets.com). It's only $18, and fits in a mini Altoids tin. I have no affiliation with the company; I just think it's a cool little keyer. 73! Dan KB6NU --- President, ARROW Comm. Assn. Re: [Elecraft] Calibration Standard
Well, I received my 5 volt calibration standard from Joe Geller at gellerlabs.com today. I upgraded to the KQ chip. The papers with it shows that it is calibrated to +/- 10 microvolts. On a 5 volt scale, that is +/- 2ppm. The initial calibration is then +/- 0.0002%! I connected it to my Alinco DM-330MV switching power supply locked at 13.8 volts. I then tested my Sears Craftsman 82002 autoranging multimeter. It displayed 5.04 volts. That is an error of 4 parts in 500, or 8 parts in 1000, or 0.8%. Next, I tested my HP 3466A bench-top DMM. It displayed 5.000 volts both autoranging and with the range manually set. I bought the HP meter used off of EBay for the purpose of aligning my K2. The K2 has always seemed to be dead on (or spot on as our British friends say), and I guess I now know why! The calibration standard from Joe Geller is a beautiful piece of work. Look on my website www.qsl.net/w3fpr for an easy to build calibrator for your DMM. 73, Don W3FPR I looked at Don's neat little project, and really like it. However, I just don't have time to scratch-build right now. Out of curiosity, I did an EBay search for "voltage reference standard" and found a guy named Joe Geller at gellerlabs.com. He sells an assembled calibrator that is NIST traceable when delivered. They start at about $25.00 and go up, but all are under $100. They are available in 2.5, 5, and 10 volt models. If I remember correctly, his claim for accuracy is about 0.1%. For a few dollars more, he will use a chip that doubles that accuracy. I ordered the basic model to test and/or calibrate my used HP 3466A. I will put out a report on how I like it when it gets here! A couple of years ago when I was in the market for headphones, someone on another mailing list recommended Radio Shack Model 33-1198 headphones. Since there's a Radio Shack close to where I live, I decided to buy these phones instead of ordering something over the Net and waiting for them to arrive. They are monaural headphones made for use with a scanner at racing events. That being the case, they are pretty good at blocking out ambient noise. They cost $50. RS also has a "noise cancelling" version for $70. After bending the head strap a little (I have a big head), I got them to where they're quite comfortable. Go Figure. Change it to: 1 Year Basic Plan [subtract $119] $412 It's a $200 machine. If it breaks, buy another. Change it to: Onboard SATA, 1 Drive connected to Onboard SATA Controller First Hard Drive 80GB, Serial ATA, 1 inch, 7.2K RPM, Hard Drive [add $10] Second Hard Drive, None [subtract &89] $333. If you need a second drive, $89 for 40G is horrible. Try TigerDirect. So, you are paying $100 extra for a better chip. Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer Opinions?
I can attest that this is also a problem with the Autek. I was using my Autek analyzer to tune an antenna at a multi-op contest station that our club was setting up. As I was tuning the antenna, every once in a while, the readings would just go crazy. I started thinking that my meter was beginning to fail until I noticed that the meter would start acting funny whenever one of the other stations was transmitting! :) Everyone got a good laugh out of it. 73! Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer Opinions?
I have the Autek antenna analyzer and think it's a good deal for the price. A couple guys in our club have the MFJ analyzers, so I've had a chance to compare. The MFJ display has more information on it, so it's easier to use. I like the analog meter on the MFJ; it lets you more quickly find an antenna's resonant frequency. BUT, the unit is bigger than the Autek, and it seems to go through batteries a lot faster than my Autek. The Autek is cheaper, too. I've seen the AEA units, too. They are much fancier, but as you say, they cost a lot more. If you were putting up antennas every day, you'd probably want the AEA, but since you probably are not... Having said all that, I just took another look at the micro908. WOW! It's very cool. If I were in the market right now, I think I'd go with this instrument. One big reason is the computer control. Neither the MFJ or Autek analyzers have this feature. You could do a lot of cool things with this feature. As an aside, I swapped e-mail with the Autek guy after I purchased my analyzer. Since it's obvious processor-controlled, I asked him about putting some kind of computer interface on it. He answered that "nobody would pay extra for that feature." Bleah. 73! There is! Put your finger between XFIL and AGC and press the "phantom" button. The filter setting displays without changing anything. I use it all the time. The book will say to press both buttons at the same time. That's hard to do. Just press between them instead. I know it's a nit, but "a mind is a terrible thing." Re: [Elecraft] K2 Odd Power issues
I'm aware of that setting, but the symptom is on 24 only, not on 28. Very odd. Also, I didn't remember that it was for 12 also. So, I set the Po28 to 15. Now both 24 and 28 show 15.2 as max requested. I set it back to 10. Still both 24 and 28 show 15.2 as max requested. I'm guessing the firmware got lost, at some point, and toggling Po28 fixed it. Now the display is believable, and I've got a couple transformers to inspect for the low power out on the higher bands. Very interesting result. Dan k4zm sez: In your Secondard Menu of the firmware there is a setting called "Po28" it comes defaulted to 10 watts and this controls the maximum output on 12 and 10 meters. [Elecraft] K2 Odd Power issues
I was tweaking up my Band Pass filters the other day, and noticed something weird. If you advance the Power Requested knob fully clockwise, it reads 15.2 watts on all bands except 12 meters. For 24 megacyccles per second, it shows 10.0 watts. The K2 (#2456 + A:B, etc.) produces over 10 watts (but not 15.2!) everywhere below 24kkcps, but this behavior of the POUT display has me baffled. Since I always run 5 watts anyhow, I don't see any operational issue, but I sure am curious. Also, power seems a bit low on 10 (and maybe 12) meters, and current a bit high on 160 - I'd not noticed due to the above mentioned self-imposed 5 watt limit. Any ideas out there? RE: [Elecraft] Ain't there no ragchewin' goin' on?
I had a recent QSO (14 Nov) that went 70 minutes. It's easy when the other op has lots of common interests. A K2 owner, no less, but running his Omni that night for some reason I don't remember. We both soar, fly instruments, play radio, and several other things in common I don't remember (I guess that Old Timers disease is catching up to me - this was only a month ago). My log shows 21:37 to 22:47. Don's card (K5KW) shows only 22:00. So, I guess we qualify (although Don was on his Omni VI+ that evening). I'm not sure that's right. Every time I've seen much attenuation, I've not been on the right freq. If you look at the height of the peak in Spectrogram, it doesn't drop much as you cycle through the widths. A primative zero-beat was to go to 100Hz bw, and peak the volume. Or, a filter center not near the input pitch will attenuate (by design) greatly. Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 W3FPR - Don Wilhelm ... allow better rejection than a narrower filiter and avoid the attenuation that occurs with very narrow filters. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Shortened figures
Evidently you guess. I've tried posts in various forums for "Old QST's" and "First Licensed" databases and come up empty. QST used to (at least in the early 1980s) publish the "Last Call Issued" by zone. So if N4GMN was higher than the last call in July, and lower than the last call in August, then my ticket must have been issued in August of that 1981. But so far, I've found nobody who'll look me up. QCWA has old callbooks for this purpose, but publishing callsigns was a slow process back then. I got WG4S (Amateur Extra) in 1982, but my General (first ticket I think - Didn't techs get longer calls?) N4GMN first appeared in the 1983 callbook. I don't "think" I went from General to Amateur Extra in 10 months, but maybe I did. I do remember a lot of sessions at the Stein Club with a Heathkit keyer, a few pitchers of beer, and N4GMN, N4FBN and KR4W sending code around the table so maybe time went pretty fast! I also remember badly flummoxing the copy on the 20 wpm test of occupation - All I got was "mber". My guess was right cause I got the ticket! What would you guess? Long story short (oops, too late), I use 81 in contests but am safe from the QCWA until 2008 (AARP already got me tho - They don't seem to care when you were licensed). RE: [Elecraft] Highest power supply voltage for K2?
I've always done the following to see if I was going to toast something. Maybe someone can tell me the error of may ways (the last thing I did this on was a $1,400 Video Camera - if the method is dangerous, I'll stop!). I hook the 6V Camera up to a 6V power supply (actually a variable voltage PS) through an ammeter. I slowly advance the voltage (toward the 9.6V target of the high-capacity batteries stolen from my Electric Zagi model airplane). I figure if the current goes up, I'm going to cook something. If the current decreases, then the power being dissipated is roughly constant so I'm not cooking anything. If I'm WAY off in left field, let me know. I'll spring for the $60 camera batteries that don't last worth a poop instead of the [already on hand] airplane batteries that hold up nicely. If I'm NOT off in left field, this is a nice way to check out a circuit without a diagram or any disassembly/tracing. Open the manual to the parts listing and check each installed part for the correct value." or some such wisdom. That is an EXCELLENT second step. The FIRST step, is go to the web, download the manual in PDF format (so you can search on it) and get the latest errata. So the FIRST STEP is to HAND-WRITE THE ERRATA INTO THE MANUAL ITSELF IN PLACE, and then proceed with "check that all components have been inserted in the correct location". Wouldn't you feel silly removing the "wrong" part because of the manual, only to find in troubleshooting that the part had been replaced (or even removed - C180 on the RF board is no longer used) in a note you didn't have! hth Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. FW: FW: [Elecraft] Both internal and external keyer
Vic humbly doesn't quote the off-list thread leading up to this exchange. snips are: I've not had a problem yet [with ADET On], and I often send around 30-35 wpm. and: If I warm up for a while, I actually can send up to 45 wpm without too many errors. Followed by my "brag" and speaking Greek comment. Dan ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] 04 SS Phone / K2
You should have been on ECN last week. There was a KX1 very decent signal from HI here on Lookout Mountain (GA/AL/TN) border. In fact, AH6RE was louder than Net Control! Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 Hawaii is going to be the hard one from here in South Carolina. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] 04 SS Phone / K2
I have a fairly early (and QRP) K2 (S/N 1757), and have been trying for the Elecraft WAS award ever since I completed it. I have needed 11 states for the last two years, and have been unable to add a single one even though I have really tried. Yesterday, I remembered the SS fairly late in the afternoon (about 1600 EST), and thought that might be an excellent way to add a state or two. Even with a long dinner break, I was able to pick up 7 of those 11 stations before the SS ended! All QRP, and all SSB. All on a 90 foot wire out of an upstairs bathroom window to a pine tree using an SGC-230 autotuner (a really old one). Now I am looking for Delaware, Hawaii, Montana, and Wyoming! Hawaii is going to be the hard one from here in South Carolina. I hope I don't have to wait on the sunspot cycle for that one! But this one was fun... 73 mults/296q's/20+ hrs. Worked 6 other Q stations ( including another K2 - N9NE ). Nice to see I'm not the only QRP masochist! ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] How to set up SSB
Well, you made me think, but it turns out, you are right. The CAL FIL display says "t" for the 2.20 setting, but it's really using OP1. However, with the alignment done on 2.20 and transmit done on OP1, the filter will be very off, and the ripple is extreme. My 2 year old KSB2 seems OK in the flatness department. Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 Bob (G3VVT) sez: The option of OP1 or 2.2, etc in the filter selection is for receive only. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. FW: [Elecraft] Both internal and external keyer
Yes, and it's in the book (even the early ones). Set Menu INP to PDLr (or PDLn if you are one of those oddball, right-handed folks). Set Menu IAB to B (or A if you are one of those). Set Menu INP to ADET On (default). Now, if the dit paddle closes, the K2 sends dits. If the dah paddle closes, the K2 sends dahs. If they close simultaneously, the K2 sends CW as long as they are closed. Get a mini-plug stereo splitter from RatShack or build a pigtail Y so you can plug in two (or three?) devices. The paddles are wired normally. The straight-key or computer needs to pull on BOTH dit and dah lines. Use a wired-and from 2 diodes (Pg 95 in the Rev F manual). I was able to fit the diodes in the mini plug itself. Now, I just plug in the paddles, key or both and the K2 figures out the rest. Some high-speed squeeze keyers occasionally have troubles with the K2 thinking hand key and the op is just a tad early on one of the paddles. I've not heard of this happening below 35wpm and I never run that speed. The ADET Off is the only fix for that if you have such worries (Kinda wish I did have those troubles). I always leave the straight key plugged in. If someone requests a QRS or is already below 15 wpm, I keep my fist in practice by using the Straight-key (I can't make it send readable code faster than 14 wpm). Another note, for SK or Paddles. If you hook up a CW reader (I use CWGet) and let it copy your sending, you will be in for a surprise. I discovered there is almost NEVER a space between DE and WG4S. Well, now there is. Sending 01234567890 on the straight key with no extra spaces was a good exercise too! Took a while to get that right (actually, it took a while on the paddles too!). [Elecraft] K160 effect on 80/75m power
This may be normal, but wanted to check if others see a slightly reduced power output at the high end of 75m after installing the K160 module. After peaking L3 and L4 on 160m per the instruction manual, I notice that on 80m around 3.5Mhz, when the K2 power is set to 10w, I can only get about 9w out...and then at 3.99Mhz, I only can get about 8.5w out. Not sure if this will matter since I'm now building the KPA100 and will at most times be driving an amp at 60 watts from the K2/100, but curious to see if this is normal or if there some other tweaking I can do to get at least 10w on 75/80m when running without the KPA100. At the same power setting I get at least 10w out on all the other bands, including 160.
