Re: [Elecraft] [K3] No Power out, no sigs in
I had similar trouble related to the synthesizer boards on a K3. On the newer KSYN3A boards there is a green LED on the top edge of the board that should be ON if the board is working ok. You mentioned a sub RX so you should have two of these boards mounted against the back of the front panel. In any case, if the main KSYN3 board dies, everything acts as you've described. If the sub RX KSYN3 board dies, only the sub RX is affected. So there is a chance you could swap the KSYN3 boards and bring the main K3 back to life at the expense of no sub RX. Just a thought - bit of a pain to swap those boards. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Owner's Manual Errata update, rev B4-4
Thanks, Don. I understand that was the intention with the manual, and I do follow the Firmware/Manual update notes, as well as the reflector. At the moment, the firmware update notes document has reached 13 pages and is full of little tidbits and tweaks for the manual, as well as an occasional outright change or addition. And I'm certain I've already lost track of some bits of reflector wisdom from Wayne and Eric that might be valuable in a manual update as well. While I can mark up my paper manual, it's not so easy to use the Rev B4 PDF manual from last June plus the update notes that I keep on my PC and iPad and iPhone any more! In any case, just curious. Competing against yourself is excellent advice that you've already received. There are a few other ways to make contesting more fun: - Join a contest club. You still operate at home on your own equipment, but your score becomes part of an aggregate club score. The big advantage is that it puts you in touch with other contesters in your region from whom you can learn. You'll see contest club scores listed in the results of many contests. - An enormously motivating development is online reporting of your contest score. The computer you use for logging (you are using logging saftware, aren't you?) has to be connected to the internet for this to work. N1MM Logger, and probably several other loggers has a module that you activate that collects your score data from the logger and uploads it automatically to a score reporting website, where your score is listed with all other participants. You can check out the website and see how you're doing relative to everyone else. The first time I tried this I got into a race with a ham who was a few hundred points ahead of me. I tried to catch him and did after a while. Then I could see that he was pouring it on to try and get ahead of me again. We battled for hours for (something like) 763rd place, but it was great fun because he was a reachable target. I looked him up on qrz.com and e-mailed him after the contest. He said he had his eyes on me the whole time and was working hard to stay ahead. We both spent a lot more time in front of the radio and improved our scores a lot. It was also a lot more fun, because after all QSOs = Fun. Having said all this, I'll be darned if I can find the website! It's run by a W1/VE1 and it'll probably come to me before long. I try not to get distracted, another words I try to stay in front of the radio. So I feel as if I should be, at least, competitive. But, it happens every time. I sit down, eagerly awaiting the start of the contest, ready to do battle, and get slaughtered. Within an hour or so I am hopelessly behind. After 4 or 5 hours it is a joke. after 8 or 10 hours every station I work has 600 contacts! Some of these guys are averaging a contact a minute OVER 8 HOURS! I'm not mad, I am just amazed. My best contact rate was about 30 an hour and that was only for a couple of hours.I usually run a contact every 3 or 4 minutes. So after a while I get discouraged and start getting up and watching football for a few minutes or something else and then I really fall behind. I don't mind not winning, but I am getting clobbered by every one I work by a factor of 7 or 8. I have to wonder, am I really that bad? The funny thing is, by the time the next contest rolls around. Re: [Elecraft] Plug wiring for Model CMOS-4 Keyer
Hi Gary Even easier - I use a regular RCA patch cable (came with my keyer anyway) and a Radio Shack RCA to 1/8" stereo adapter (don't have RS #) with my CMOS-4. The adapter takes RCA center conductor to both tip and ring. Works with my KX1 and FT-897.Handy, and, with no cutting and soldering to one of those nasty 1/8" stereo plugs which always seem to be chrome-plated and tough to solder, probably more reliable too! 73, geoff - W1OH Rob Locher W7GH wrote: Hi Gary, Sorry for the delayed response to your question. I was away from email for a long weekend (hooray!). I don't have a KX1, so I don't know exactly, but I do have a CMOS-4 (and an Elecraft K2). The CMOS-4 uses an RCA jack for the key output. To interface my K2 to my CMOS-4 keyer, I took an RCA patch cable, cut off the RCA connector on the end, and soldered a 1/8" stereo plug instead. Of course the cable ground shield should be connected to the RCA ground shield on one end and the stereo ground shield on the other. I can't recall if the inner connector from the RCA plug should be connected to the tip or the ring of the stereo plug, but I suspect it doesn't matter. 73, - Rob W7GH K2 #5004 On Sat, 25 Mar 2006 14:03:27 -0800, Gary H Evans <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: I would like to use my CMOS-4 keyer with my KX1. [Elecraft] KX1 #1317 on the air!
Wow! This afternoon I finished the KX1 that Santa brought. What a nice kit to build! Now I'm in trouble - hooked! What'll I build next? Poked around 40M and 20M for a bit just after lunch, and had a solid 20M QSO with WD8BBE in Ohio using my indoor dipole here at home on Cape Cod. What a nice little rig! Now to get the KXB30 installed (for the time being). And save the $ for a KXAT1 and the coming KXB3080.. Can't wait to try this little guy outdoors! 72, geoff - W1OH -- ********* Geoff Allsup, W1OH [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] Research Engineer Upper Ocean Processes Group Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Woods Hole, MA, USA * ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
