RE: OL2000 Rules

I've just tested our mail server with www.abuse.net/relay.htm and on test 8 it appears to fail. RE: relay problems
I think this isn't a security flaw but by design, since the recipient is in the domain the server is responsible for it accepts and sends the mail. Your server does not appear to allow relaying outside your domain, which is good. It would be a bad thing if it would accept rcpt to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] when helo is sent from outside your domain. I am not sure about this, but i think that if you would block this you are not gonna be able to receive mail at all. You're correct that the MTS-IN and MTS-OUT folders relevant to this problem are actually held within the IS. Although not exactly the same as your problem, I recently had a similar IMS issue which was resolved by deleting and re-creating it. I'm not 100% sure whether the MTS-IN and OUT folders are re-created, reused, or whatever when you do this, though. But I don't see the harm in doing it (backup first, blah, blah!) RE: Event Id 3038
Actually, now I'm confused, as I read the event ID material you posted below as referring to the MTS-OUT folder. But the article which Simon paraphrased says differently: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q296/8/79.ASP Now I'm not so sure. One other thing you could try, and is safe to do, is to stop the IMS, delete the queue.dat file, and restart the IMS. A duff queue.dat can also cause duplicate mail to be sent. RE: multiple IS stores w/ e2k
Depends on quite a few factors. For one customer, we created a single storage group with 3 mailbox stores and 1 public store. The users were spread across the mailbox stores according to their surname, e.g. A-G one 1st store, H-P on 2nd etc. If a store fails, it doesn't affect a particular department, etc. By only creating 3 mailbox stores, coupled with the mapi public store, we still have a slot free for a spare store should the need arise to create one, e.g. DR purposes, etc. The recommended approach is still to keep your transaction logs on a separate RAID1 array, away from the databases. If you have more than 1 storage group, you should have further arrays available to separate the storage group transaction logs from each other. Having said that, I haven't yet had to justify more than 1 storage group on a system. Just one example from the many that are possible! If on the other hand, I telnet into the SMTP relay from a PC here on the LAN I can issue Helo me, Mail From: or other commands and use it as a relay without problem. Title: OWA and SP4 Try using the IP address of the server with the /exchange in a browser on the internal network to see if that part of it is working. e.g.; 205.3.254.133/exchange If it works, then you can tackle the issue of why you can't see it from the outside. -Original Message-From: Eric Peeters [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]Sent: Wednesday, November 21, 2001 9:44 AMTo: MS-Exchange Admin IssuesSubject: RE: OWA and SP4 I have internal and external DNS so I have two FQDNs pointing to the same OWA, though internal users never use it (I'm about the only one). Karen Your right it was not listed in Technet - not sure why though! My first thought was SP4 needs applying - but as you stated before, that was already applied. RE: My IIS SMTP is being used as a relay - need help stopping thi s
When was the last time you deleted the all of the emails in the queue directory, to see how many you are actually getting a day? Do you actually get 1500 new emails in the queue a day? Are the address that the spammer is sending to, internal addresses of your users, or external ones, or both? If the messages are in the queue directory, doesn't that may mean that they are being caught there and not being relayed? In which case you can edit the registry to limit the number of messages that the queue can hold (Q258748). This may also help your processor utilization, because it will quit trying to send these caught emails. Just ideas to look into. RE: My IIS SMTP is being used as a relay - need help stopping this
Again, as far as i see it, it is tons of _incoming_ mail... this, ofcourse, is not relaying, you're just being fscked by some brainless *sshole. Tell me, at what point is your mailserver allowing relaying according to abuse.net? I'll bet it's just the last one, if this is the case than you should stop worrying about being (ab)used for relaying, instead worry about someone mailbombing you. Also, you should be able to see where those e-mails are coming from. Are they all from the same host/mailserver? GAL sorting
Question is: Winnt 4.0 SP6a Exch 5.5 SP3 We use both an internet connector and a text paging connector (PageMaster). Many of our users have two addresses in the GAL, one for their email and the other for their pager. When doing a GAL lookup to send email, sometimes the email address is first and occasionally the pager is first. While the icon in front of the address differentiates the two, we often have complaints from users because their pager is first and other users send email to the pager instead of the email account. Is there a way to sort the GAL so that email addresses is always first. Does anyone know why exchange seems to put the addresses in the GAL randomly? RE: My IIS SMTP is being used as a relay - need help stopping thi---s
Actually, I'm getting more than 1500 per day left in the queue. Most eventually make it out and more new ones come into the queue. So it's like a revolving door. The addresses the spammer is sending to are all outside addresses. I have not seen one sent to whitnall.com yet. They all go to some other domain. As for limiting messages in the queue, good idea... but it still doesn't resolve the problem of the relay. It does however help my performance so thanks for the tip. :) When was the last time you deleted the all of the emails in the queue directory, to see how many you are actually getting a day? Do you actually get 1500 new emails in the queue a day? Are the address that the spammer is sending to, internal addresses of your users, or external ones, or both? If the messages are in the queue directory, doesn't that may mean that they are being caught there and not being relayed? In which case you can edit the registry to limit the number of messages that the queue can hold (Q258748). This may also help your processor utilization, because it will quit trying to send these caught emails. Just ideas to look into. RE: My IIS SMTP is being used as a relay - need help stopping this
Hey Bob, thanks for the reply! www.abuse.net told me I failed on TEST #1. I should also mention, the messages getting loaded into the queue are not destined for my domain nor originating from my domain. The are usually from hotmail.com accounts to various other domains (but not my domain whitnall.com) and contain porn links. So I think it is a relay issue. They are not ALL originating from the exact same email address, but they are all hotmail.com accounts. I've gone through this before and find it to be of little help. Unfortunately I cannot grasp how to allow relay for whitnall.com ONLY and not any other domain. This is not the first time I've seen it. If I remove the messages currently in the queue but don't reboot, more keep being added. It's not a major issue, but is one more thing to remember to do before rebooting the server. I can't find anything (that looks relevant) in Technet looking under 3038, outbound store queue or outbound messages awaiting conversion (or variations).
