Re: [ilugd] Any experiences with Acer Aspire One?
I would advise everyone to not buy any Acer notebook. Their build quality sucks. And believe me, you might think that build quality does not matter, but for notebooks it does -- you'll realize it later. The mousepad of my Acer laptop[1] started misbehaving within 2 months of purchase. Today, after 3 years of sparse usage (mostly lying around at home) I find out that the keyboard has started misbehaving too. Don't even get me started on the battery. Even when it was brand new, I never got more than 1h 15m of battery backup. Moral: DON'T buy Acer. [ilugd] ICICI Netbanking and Firefox 2.0 (or where to get Firefox 1.5)
Hi, Has anyone been able to successfully transact on the ICICI Netbanking website using Firefox 2.0. By transact I mean able to transfer funds, etc. Basically anything that requires: (a) your transaction password to be entered, or (b) the debit card grid verification to be performed). My session has consistently been timed out immediately after (a) above. While Googling around, I came across a forum where someone claimed that due to a JS error the session times out in Firefox 2.0, but the site works on Firefox 1.5. Does anyone know where I can get a Firefox 1.5 package (or tarball) for Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. I've been trying to search for it, but in vain. > Please do > remember that Freed.in is what the community wants it > to be, so if you do not like the change of focus, please > be at the meeting, and make yourselves heard. This focus on "what the community wants", in my opinion, does not always work. There are things which need to be driven by a single person or a small core team based on their personal convictions. Everything can't be a decision by committee. All those who're harping about the inappropriateness about the new direction of Freed on the mailing list (me included) will probably not work as much (or not work at all) in running around to get stuff organized. So why let them take control of the decision? (which would mean giving them a vote in the meeting -- if it comes to that) The core team can listen to everyone's view, and execute only what they themselves are convinced about. Not some fuzzy "community" trying to drive stuff by proxy using video conferencing and IRC. Exactly. This whole thing about the "knowledge economy" is not necessarily about software. Its about mind sets. It's the same mind set that is required to get an RTI act into effect. Sure, the RTI act is more effective if the information dissemination is not through individual applications and replies -- but it still works without the software. > So where is that huge fund of knowledge that is lying with the > individuals of India? At the risk of oversimplification: Today's society and economy is hinged upon the availability of knowledge. Digital technologies have proven to be an effective way for sharing such knowledge. Digital technologies are not available to most of India (especially rural parts). Is Freed.in about bridging this digital divide? > Finally, to answer the question you raised raised at the end of your > first para, knowledge that is hidden away in a proprietary format, no > matter how prevalent the format or how high the quality of the > knowledge, is useless in the new paradigm IMNSHO. No. In fact, I said that knowledge needs to be stored in open formats and transmitted using standard (open) protocols. That's necessary. What's not necessary is that the *tools* required to manipulate these formats be free and open source. For example, a Wiki developed in .Net and deployed on Microsoft Server 2k with IIS as the web server is still a Wiki. It will achieve the purpose of knowledge sharing in the same way a Twiki on LAMP does. Re: [ilugd] Plan for Freed.in 2008
Hi Gora, I have attended only one Freed (it was called Freedel at that point) and the focus seems to have shifted quite a bit since that time (open source s/w focused event to a more "social revolution" kind of event). Therefore, please read my comments in that context -- most of them may be emanating from the fact that the new direction doesn't fit my notion of the event. 1. How does a focus on the "Knowledge Ecosystem" tie in with open source software? It surely ties in with open standards (and file formats), but not necessarily with free/open source software. However, freed.in may focus on the use of open source software in helping create the knowledge system - which is absolutely fine. Except that (a) this is not stated anywhere explicitly in the document, and (b) not all content can be managed properly with open source s/w as of now. 2. The term "Knowledge Ecosystem" can mean different things to different people. I've read the document carefully, it does not define what "knowledge ecosystem" means to the organizers of the event in clear concise terms. I think that's important. Also, knowledge can impact lots of aspects of our lives. It would be good to list a few of them, which Freed is planning to focus upon. From the tone of the document, education and government seemed to be the primary focus, but again, helps to be explicit. 3. What does section 1.3 mean? How do you plan to achieve the tangible goals listed out in this section through Freed.in? Wouldn't achieving these goals require a lot more sustained effort than a 3 day event? Section 2.4 answers this question partially, but I'm still a bit skeptical. Also, from a document writing perspective, portions of the text of section 2.4 should be contained in section 1.3 to make things more obvious. 4. Pardon me, but IMHO, most of section 3.1 offers nothing concrete to the user. It simply adds to the sense of vagueness. It should probably be removed and replaced by a succinct definition of the term "Knowledge Ecosystem" and be moved to somewhere in section 1 itself. 5. This might be my ignorance, but what role do open source licenses (as defined by OSI) play in creating and sharing knowledge? (Also, the link to OSI http://opensource.org opens a website wildly different from http://www.opensource.org!) As an overall comment, the document needs to be more specific. Probably you're expecting community feedback to flesh out the details. But in my opinion, the overall vagueness (and too many buzzwords) hampered my in offering any useful feedback. Making the document shorter and adding a one line "mantra" (v/s a mission and vision statement) about Freed should help people understand the overall context. And get the ideas flowing. Re: [ilugd] (long mail - a report) Linux & FOSS workshop at Acharya Narendra Dev College (Delhi University) & formation of College LUG
> Now would you as an individual not use ICICI simply because its ATM > service is based on Microsoft's software? Incorrect analogy. You should not be comparing an individual's choice in selecting the bank. You should be comparing the banks choice in selecting the ATM vendor/technology. If the IT honchos at ICICI feel that end-to-end integration with their internal systems is best achieved if ATM services are outsourced to a vendor having ".Net technology" then they are free to choose any vendor. No one is forcing them to choose a vendor whose technology is based on Linux. OR they can use their clout and leverage their bargaining position to force a vendor to custom develop a technology for them in .Net, if one is not available already. If you *have* to compare in individuals choice in choosing a bank based on their IT infrastructure, then yes, I do select a bank whose net-banking works in Firefox -- because that matters to me. If tomorrow none of the banks' site works in Firefox then I don't have the negotiating power to force them to develop one. > > you might find the laugh being at your expense, when you realise that > its an outsourced service. I don't think so. Large corporations have strict guidelines and specifications that their vendors need to follow. These may include: * software with exact version * coding guidelines * documentation guidelines * brand guidelines for logo placements, selection of fonts, selection of colours etc. (Microsoft has a 3kg glossy printed book detailing each one of these) So, Microsoft, theoretically, has full control over what their vendors do. [ilugd] Linux and Laptops -- Help required
Hi, I'm planning to purchase a laptop, which would be my new Linux box. I have a lot of questions which I am listing below. It would be great if anyone could help me with them - o I read some articles about Linux running into troubles with Intel Centrino based laptops -- especially the WLAN card. Can someone give me a first hand account? o Other factors remaining the same, there's a difference of about Rs 10k between Celeron-M and Centrino based laptops. Is the gain in performance worth the cost? o AMD Sempron Mobile or Celerom-M? o AMD Turion-64 or Centrino? o Other than the Acer Aspire series, are there any AMD based laptops available in India? o From where can one get Lenovo R-Series in India? I couldn't find them on the website. o Acer, Compaq, Zenith, Lenovo, Dell -- any first hand experiences wrt reliability, after-sales support, etc? o Any specific recommendations or reviews of the laptop(s) that you have purchased I've read quite a few opinions online but most of them do not mention the specific models available in India, or do not address the Linux compatibility issue at all. Re: [ilugd] DNS setting for the DNS-Server :- How to resolve any request to a Fixed IP address
The hostnames that you're referring to (Google, Yahoo, etc) have multiple IP addresses. Any one of those IP addresses (randomly selected) is returned each time you query a public DNS server. This is a method for balancing the load amongst multiple servers. Why do you then want to use only one IP address? Anywho.. if you've set your mind to it - here's the solution that will work on your local machine: Edit /etc/hosts and add the following lines to it. These are actual IP addresses of Yahoo/Google. Re: [ilugd] Problem: Connecting Reliance Terminal phone
Hi Sudev, > Pointer and help needed urgently. I had an LG 350R (I think) and used the serial cable (available from nehru place for 200 bucks) to connect the phone to the comp. It worked like a breeze... no stupid usb->serial conversion or the like! One thing though - check the data settings of your phone. It should be set to "USB Modem" if you want to use it like one, or should be set to one of the available baud rates if you want to use it as a serial modem. Also change the data settnigs to "Modem Only" or "Modem for Next" to be sure. Failing to do so, might result in the modem not being detected by the OS. One advice - dump Reliance - it's *dead* slow. You'll end up wasting your money. Go for a decent broadband (like Airtel). After you uploaded the firmware the printer should make some whirring noises and some LEDs should blink. Re: [ilugd] Unable to setup HP 1005 printer on Ubuntu
I had successfully set up an HP Laserjet 1000 some time ago. You need to download the firmware and 'cat' it to the device whenever you plug the printer in (or switch it on). The printer will not function otherwise. Instead of manually uploading the firmware each time - you can set up hotplug to automatically do it for you. To top it of, IIRC, the firmware has been removed from all official HP download channels. Try searching for lj1000.exe (or a similar sounding filename) on Google to see if someone else has put the firmware up for download. [ilugd] Giving up on scratched CDs and ejecting mounted CDs
Hi, Firstly, could anyone please tell me what's the philosophy behind 'locking' the CD-ROM tray when a CD has been mounted. Why can't I eject a mounted CD? Additionally, is there some way with which I may eject mounted CDs? Secondly, when the kernel encouters an I/O error while accessing a scratched CD, when does it give up? Why does it keep trying to access the scratched portion again & again, thus effectively hanging the process which initiated the read. Even when the initiating process is killed, the kernel keeps trying to access the CD drive. Thus, one can't unmount the CD cuz it's supposedly busy, and one can't eject the CD cuz it's mounted. The only solution being a reboot. Re: [ilugd] Running Webserver from home
I asked something related to Airtel broadband on a different mailing list and I'm appending snippets of conversation that ensued. Some of this information might help you: - BEGIN SNIPPET #1 - > How do you make Airtel work? The DSL router sits between the POTS splitter and the NIC on your machine. You get a small CAT5 and plug one end into the router and the other end into your NIC. The router becomes your gateway now. It has an internal IP and the external IP is dynamic (probably Radius'ed). The internal IP is configurable of course but it's set to some default initially so that you can log in to it and do whatever. - END SNIPPET #1 - - BEGIN SNIPPET #2 - > Rs 500 has non-refundable installation charges and an additional Rs > 100 per month as rental for the modem is it worth it? The sales > executive said that the connection is shared and that I wont, ever, > get the claimed 128 Kbps. I paid around 2000 as deposit + installation charges last September. The standard modem rental rate is Rs. 99/- pm. Go for a router instead at Rs. 199/- pm. Actually I'm planning to buy the router from them now because I've been paying 199 every month for 12 months now and the routers they're giving out now are pretty stupid (but still better than the modem option definitely). When I got my connection I got a ZyXEL router - a very good model with easy configurability. The site says it's a 1:2 DSL meaning it's shared. Now theoretically, DSL can never be shared because it works over your landline which means it's private to you. What this basically means is that (and probably the salesperson doesn't know it) there's a main line which is split such that every customer receives 128 kbps. I don't understand how else I've been getting 100% b/w on both u/l and d/l consistently day-in and day-out. After the upgrade to 256 kbps, any wget download off even a reasonably good server (any Gentoo mirror for instance) gives me a consistent 30 kBps which equates to 240 kbps of the promised 256 kbps. Considering that Airtel uses PPP over ATM (lot of overhead) this is very very good indeed. The uploads don't come upto 30 kBps, but that's probably because no one pulls from me at 30 kBps consistenly. The best way for you to check things out would be to visit a neighbour who has a DSL connection and try some wgetting. With my DSL there's no such thing as peak and off-peak time so you can try anytime you want. - END SNIPPET #2 - Nandz. -- http://nandz.blogspot.com http://foodieforlife.blogspot.com ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/
[ilugd] PPP vs Ethernet vs PPPoE
Hi, I've been trying to read up on PPP and have got myself into a confused mess. Most of the information that I've gathered is from Wikipedia. So here goes... # From Wikipedia: "The Point-to-Point Protocol, or PPP, is commonly used to establish a direct connection between two nodes" Suppose I'm using a dialup line. The modem 'dials into' my ISP's server and establishes a connection. Effectively, isn't this a one-to-one direct connection? Can't I have a simple script which does the following as soon as the modem has 'dialled into' the ISP's server: 1. Change my machine's IP addresss to a pre-determined IP address (probably provided by the ISP when I purchased the net connection) 2. Change the routing rules to route all outgoing network traffic through a pre-determined IP address (the IP address of the server which I've just dialled into) 3. And finally, change /etc/resolv.conf As soon as the modem disconnects, another script could bring all the network configuration back to the original state. # From Wikipedia: "PPP was designed to work with several network layer protocols, such as IP, IPX and AppleTalk..." As per my understanding, PPP is simply a 'wrapper' protocol. Given two nodes connected to each other using a single link (cable, connection media, whatever), PPP may be used for communicating using multiple protocols at the same time. i.e., under normal circumstances, only one of IP or IPX may be used, at any given time. However, by using PPP, both IP and IPX, can be multiplexed. # From Wikipedia: "PPPoE, point-to-point protocol over Ethernet, is a network protocol for encapsulating PPP frames in Ethernet frames." If I understand this correctly, Ethernet works a layer below PPP. Why would PPP frames be encapsulated in Ethernet frames? Shouldn't it be the exact opposite? Additionally, since PPP encapsulates IP, IPX, etc., out of which (at least) IP datagrams can be sent 'inside' Ethernet frames (the way a 'normal' LAN work), why would anyone want to use PPPoE? Any answers to these questions? Or pointers to where I can read up stuff written in plain English? Just so that I don't get labelled an 'insensitive clod' - here goes: At my institude (college, university, whatever) - I tried initiating a LUG. Though the whole thing died within a couple of meets (the group was man *and* woman unfriendly, I guess, he he :-) I noticed something in the first meet. There were some men and women who had come to the first meet just for the heck of it... they wanted to see what's going on, etc. There was one girl, whom I knew, was interested in Linux, and was very enthusiastic in participating in the LUG. She didn't speak up in the first meet, nor in the second - even after being prompted/prodded to raise her opinion/voice. Then she stopped coming. What more does one need to do? Fall on our knees and beg to the females all around the world - "PLEASE! Bless us with your benign presence and opinions"... why can't they just behave "normally" rather than having special interest groups and movements, etc. etc. A LUG meet is not a godforsaken place where they're opressed, beaten up, harassed, sexually assaulted, etc. etc. Why the special treatment there? Just organize meets at earthly hours and places, so that females can make it (Delhi is not a nice place to go back late in the night!) Stop asking for 'special treatment' and start behaving normally. Nnow, please, don't go off on a tangent with the argument that 'normal' behaviour is too manly and woman unfriendly, etc. etc. Men & women have differences which should be resepected. Move on. Start turning up for meetings. Things will change automagically. Btw - I attended only one ILUG-d meet @ Sarai. That was about 4-5 years back. Have not been able to attend any meeting since then... is this group "Saurabh Nanda unfriendly?" Probably I should write a HOWTO on how to make Linux Users Group Saurabh Nanda friendly! Did you find that joke offensive? (PS: On second thoughts it's a bad joke... real bad :-p) There's only one 'feminist' I've met in my entire life who's agreed to the fact that women ask for wy too much special treatment. She's fed up of it herself. That's exactly what's happening here. WHILE THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT ALLOWS YOU TO COPY, MODIFY AND DISTRIBUTE THE SOFTWARE, IT DOES NOT PERMIT YOU TO DISTRIBUTE THE SOFTWARE UTILIZING RED HAT'S TRADEMARKS."
