[LegacyUG] Calculated Dates [was Favorite Legacy Tip]

2007-08-20 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Sara:

I use "cal" (or actually "calc") all the time, and it's the recommended format
in "Getting It Right." That abbreviation tells me the date is derived from
another record such as age at marriage, death, or in a census rather than being
a known fact in and of itself. I also add a note to remind me of the basis for
the calculation. I prefer "calc" because "cal" seems to indicate "calendar" to
most people and can be confusing although it is the recommended abbreviation.

Heather,

I certainly understand the nuances, but I have to admit that in eleven
years of genealogical research, I have never seen anyone use "cal."
Good idea though. Am I just exchanging data with the wrong people?

RE: [LegacyUG] More Lumping and Splitting

2007-08-20 Thread Cathy

Hi Kirsten,

I guess it is confusing.
There is a setting in Options > Customise that sets whether the
Source list name prints.

It usually only prints if you haven't entered a Title.
It's really just for your use.

Hi Kirsten,
You need to use the Source List Name to keep things together and
findable on the Master Source list.
It sorts (currently) only by Source List Name.
How you do it depends on how you think about sources. I do it by
type. Some people put location first so that all sources for a
particular State are found together.

Re: [LegacyUG] Favorite Legacy Tip

2007-08-20 Thread Mitch Mackrory
I use the same three terms as Heather for the same reasons.

I also use the exact same calculations and have done since the mid
1980s. I was given them by a friend in the LDS church (I am LDS) and
I understood them to be the recommended method within the church.
They have always worked reasonably well for me although I have some
significant exceptions (see below).

Here is an excellent example (and some humor/humour) ...My great
grandfather married three times (and he wasn't LDS; he had them one at
a time :) ). The last marriage was when he was 72 and his new wife
was only 21. They subsequently produced my Half Granduncle (the same
generation as my grandfather and he is only 10 years older than me.
Nobody's system could have predicted that marriage or child's birth!

The moral of this story - don't get too hung up on estimates but they
can be useful if you have nothing better.

Cheers, Mitch

Again, we are different to the USA in that we have censuses for England and

IMHO, I do think that the current Gedcom program, has
not been changed, and probably won't, so Legacy 7 has
no control over it. When the committee that monitors

mentioned. L7 may create a tool to send data into an

RE: [LegacyUG] Favorite Legacy Tip

2007-08-20 Thread Cathy

Hi Paul,

I'm not Heather but you are right that different countries, different
times and different families have different norms for marriage age
(can I get another different in there? ;-)) You need to get a feel
from your research.

In my family very few people marry in the 18th and 19th century
before they are at least 18 and most over 21, many, including the
women, well over. I was surprised by this. Perhaps it was economics
that kept them single. This is in England and Australia.

21 and 25 as estimates work for me in this time period.

Cathy

Heather,

I am interested where you get the years that women marry at about 21
and men at about 25. Are you basing the past on today's
estimates? Men and women used to get married at much earlier ages
than they do now. It was nothing for men and women to marry at 14
and 16. It was probably more common than not.

If you look into many lines of nobility, men were many times married
as early or earlier than commoners. At a time when over 50% of the
population of the United States lived on farms, a woman was an old
maid by the time she was 21 and if she wasn't married by then, she
was less likely to be able to marry.

So, I don't use those ages in estimating dates, because they would
be absolutely unrealistic in most of my data file.
I'm not bashing by any means. I was just curious how you arrived at
those ages of 21 and 25. I am curious.

Hi Heather,

That's precisely how I use them as well - though I rarely actually
enter the Est dates but do it when I'm researching that person and if
I make a To Do to find that birth or marriage I put the Estimated
dates in the To do.

[LegacyUG] Estimated Dates

2007-08-20 Thread Renee Zamora
I thought I would share my source citation for estimated dates. Using "Est"
and this source allows me to tag all individuals and periodically see if I
can find any "real" dates for them. If I have recieved estimated dates from
anyone else I put "about" on them in my database so I have no confusion on
the issue.

Hi Bill

I've just repeated what I did earlier and added several chapters - i.e. various

but if
you save it (I saved this current one as *.rtf) and then go back to the saved
copy
there is no problem - at least I didn't have one. I think it might be a case
of
patiently trying different ways of doing it...not sure.

There is probably a more refined way of getting a good result than what I did,
but
I could not generate the Error 76. Sorry about that (not sure if sorry is the
right
word in this case ;-) )

Re: [LegacyUG] abt / c / est - was: Favorite Legacy Tip

2007-08-20 Thread Susie Zada
Hi Pami,

I use abt (about) and est (estimated) quite different and I believe they mean
very different things.

If I know that someone was x years old when they married and I have the year of
marriage, then their year of birth is "abt" because they may have been
born early in the year, late in the year etc. etc. Similarly if I have
immigration or census details, I am reasonably confident of being close to the
year of birth +/- a year or two - hence "abt".

For people that I don't have a specific year and age to calculate the "abt"
date of birth, I'll use the c.25 years generation estimate and hence use "est"
. For example if my gg-grandmother was born abt 1820 and I have her
parents names then their dates of birth with be "est" 1795 until such time as I
find something that narrows it down more specifically. If my gg-grandmother is
the 5th or 10th child then her parents dates of birth might be "est" 1790 or
"est" 1785.

To me, "abt" means I have some sort of reference year / age for the calculation,
"est" means I've done a "generational estimate".

Hope that makes sense - this process works great for me as can at least see
what "generation" ancestors might belong to - particularly those with identical
names.

Oh - "c" (circa) would equate to "abt" in my approach but from memory that
wasn't a valid date prefix in Legacy (and some other genie programs) - I could
be wrong on that or it may have changed, but I've stuck to "abt" for those type
of dates.

Regards ... Susie Z

Re: [LegacyUG] Favorite Legacy Tip

2007-08-20 Thread Sara Binkley Tarpley
I'm not Myrna, and I don't use estimated dates; but I see them as
different from "about" or "circa." For example, I use "about" when I
read in the 1850 census that John Jones was 25. I enter his birth
date as "about 1825," knowing full well that in ten years he may
report his age as 33 and that his tombstone may show his birth year
as 1828. [I enter the various other dates as Alt. Birth.] If I were
to use an estimated date of birth, it might be in a case where I have
only a marriage date of 1840 and no other records. If I used
estimates, I might estimate his date of birth as " est. 1819-1824."
[I am sure many of you are better at making estimates than I am.]

I also use "about" when a couple reports in the later censuses how
many years they have been married. I know that if I eventually find a
marriage record, it may vary from what they reported. I also know
that in another census they might show a different length of marriage.

Kirsten,

Again, we are different to the USA in that we have censuses for England and
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. I just have one Master Source called
"Census" and in the Details I have Country and year. Where I have Census
information from other countries I have a Master Source for that Country and
all the other information goes into the detail.

Ron:

Actually I wouldn't consider your BMD example "lumping" at all, but simply
efficient use of the Master Source feature, since probably several GRO
details remain consistent from one record to the next. In the US, however,
maintaining these records is a state or county function. Lumping these
together under something like "Vitals" would lose details at the Master
Source level. Those details would still be included in source citations
when producing most reports, of course, but it seems a Master Source
report/list would have little usefulness.

I'm not lobbying for either the lumping or splitting approach, but looking
for a middle ground that would produce a sort of bibliography from the
master source list without making the list unwieldy.

As a Lumper, how do you handle published books or census records? Do you
group all books together under a single master source or list them
individually? At what level do you split census citations? (This is key
since they could feasibly all be lumped under Census, or they could be
divided at any one of many different levels.)

Kirsten,

I do not really use the Sources for the purposes which you indicate but as
a
lumper I would say that your supposition is not really accurate. For
example

all BMD certificates in the UK are issued by the GRO (Government Record
Office) and I lump all these together under Certificates published by the
GRO. However, in the Details I specify the type of certificate and where
appropriate the date (although usually the latter would be in the event).

Similarly for newspapers the name of the newspaper and date, page etc would
go in the Detail.

Re: [LegacyUG] More Lumping and Splitting

2007-08-20 Thread Gail Nestor
Hi Kirsten, yours is another good and thought-provoking question. I
decided to do a little survey of my sources. In my database of almost
7,000 names, I have 857 Master Sources, grouped/lumped as follows:

8 Bible - 1 source for each Bible found
104 Book - 1 source for each book
3 Booklet - 1 source for each booklet
101 Cemetery - 1 source for each cemetery or cemetery database
(Sometimes I have two sources for a cemetery - 1 for a stone I took a
photo of and 1 for a stone I found in a database. Since the detail
vary, I create a separate source for each one.)
429 Census - 1 source for each county for each census year (I like to
see who lived in a county at a certain time.)
1 Certificate - a membership certificate of my own
1 Chart - family group chart
20 Church - 1 source for each church (records involve membership
rolls, baptismal certificates, etc.)
3 Directory - 1 source for each directory for an individual year
1 Funeral Home
62 County Sources - each one is different, may be an actual will book
or deed book, or a microfilm of one of these
2 Immigration
21 Marriage - each state's records as 1 source (sort of clumped by repository)
26 Military - hodgepodge of stuff from databases to DAR files to pension files
35 Newspaper - 1 source for each paper title
1 Personal Correspondence - used for all e-mails, phone calls, and letters
1 Social Security Death Index
17 Vital - typically birth or death; clumped by state (e.g.
Pennsylvania Vital Records, 1906-Present)
4 Website - used for websites of a surname; other web sites, like
Ancestry or FindaGrave are split by each database or cemetery

That being said, I not sure how many total citation details are
associated with these master sources. I'm sure it's in the thousands.
I can get a count for an individual source, but I don't know how to
obtain the total over all sources.

In my web-based software, TNG (The Next Generation of Genealogy
Sitebuilding), I can get sort of a Bibliography (Source List as Mills
would call it), but I have not yet figured out if it can be formatted
to look like a Source List.

It would be so nice if the user could select a master source which
would take them to a drop down box to create or select the appropriate
detail, and then attach that to one or more events or facts. I just
hate having to copy and paste a cemetery source + detail to the name,
the birth, and the death facts. Then, if I catch a mistake, I have to
correct each one separately.

Sorry for getting off on a tangent, but I spent lots and lots of time
thinking about sources!

1 Every chapter I try, to add in the publishing

2 The only setting that will work is screen/printer.
The rest have the preview greyed out, also the printer
showing the pages being formed does not show either.
3 If I go to reports and click on Descendant narrative
everything works as it should. It's just the
publishing center that gives me trouble.
4 Anne if you can duplicate this, then there must be a
conflict with Legacy and Vista. I never had this
problem with XP.

Anne, I have found that Vista requires a lot more
finger strokes to get the same thing done then in XP.
If I thought I could install XP on this machine and
have it work as good as my other machine, I would do
it in a heart beat. I still have the XP installation
disks from my Gateway but I don't think it would work
unless I could leave Vista on the disk.

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it.

Jack,

Thank you. You are, of course, correct and it was a sloppy example to give.
I obtain my certificates from the GRO hence that is generally the repository
which I use rather than the local office at which the event was first
registered.

The point I was making still remains valid, that is, even when lumping the
Detail section of the Source can be used to contain the individual
information relating to a specific event.

Ron

I normally agree 100% with your comments and assistance, but in this case
you are slightly incorrect.

ALL certificates are NOT issued by the GRO. Pre 1983 this is how it was -
not totally sure how the post 1984 computerised system operates. When a
birth or death event occurred the "informant" registered that with a local
registrar. At the end of each quarter the registrar sent a copy to the GRO.
It was therefore possible for an error to be made in the transcription that
went to the GRO. Register office marriages were dealt with similarly -
except that the "informant" was the registrar who performed the marriage.
In

C of E marriages there were three different certificates - the one held by
the church, the one sent to the registrar and the one that eventually found
its way to the GRO.

It is important to recognise that these were different documents - that
should be the same, but sometimes differed.

If you get a certificate from the GRO it will normally be a photocopy of
entry they have onto a modern blank certificate. If that isn't clear enough
to copy they send you a newly written certificate - fraught with problems
as

it may introduce new errors into what was already a transcription.

You may also buy a certificate from the local registrar. In most cases this
is also a modern transcription of the original entry, but a few register
offices are now using the same photocopying technique as the GRO.

Lastly, for marriages, you can also obtain a copy of the church register -
a

lot cheaper of course as it need only cost the price of a photocopy.

But the main point I am making is that there are up to 3 different sources
for a single certificate - GRO, Local registrar, church (marriages only).
And, most importantly, the three can have different information on them.
The
number of sources in some ways can be 5 - transcript of GRO entry,
photocopy

of GRO entry, transcript of local entry, photocopy of local entry, copy of
church marriage entry.

I have two specific examples
- GRO sent me a death certificate that was newly written. The informant was
Mary REW. It was over 12 months later that I discovered that this had been
rewritten wrongly and that her name was ROW.

- my gt grandfather (Joseph Henry THORNE) married twice. I obtained a copy
of the GRO certificate for his 2nd marriage and found that he was also one
of the witnesses! When I looked at the parish church copy it had a
different

name for the witness (his son William Henry THORNE).

I happen to use the "lumper" method, but would differentiate between these
3

distinct sources of the information. I believe that, strictly, the local
registrar's information is the true master and that the GRO is a secondary
source.

I also like to set the Living Indicator default to NO. This will set
everyone I enter in my database as deceased automatically. Since I deal
with more dead people than alive it is easier for me to remember to change
the living status to "Living" than to remember to change it to deceased. I
just hate it when you have someone living in the 1500s without dates and

RE: [LegacyUG] More Lumping and Splitting

2007-08-20 Thread Kirsten Bowman

Kirsten,

I do not really use the Sources for the purposes which you indicate but as a
lumper I would say that your supposition is not really accurate. For example
all BMD certificates in the UK are issued by the GRO (Government Record
Office) and I lump all these together under Certificates published by the
GRO. However, in the Details I specify the type of certificate and where
appropriate the date (although usually the latter would be in the event).

Similarly for newspapers the name of the newspaper and date, page etc would
go in the Detail.

Re: [LegacyUG] Please truncate your mail

2007-08-20 Thread Ed Lawler

Kirsten,

You can add a signature without using an extension. Use the following steps:

1. Create a text file to contain your signature in an appropriate place
("My Documents", etc.).

2. In the signature file, add "-- " on a line by itself as the *first*
line. Add any other lines that you want to appear in the signature.
There used to be an informal convention that sigs be no more than four
lines (but that was in the times of the 300 baud teletype
printer/terminals). I don't think anyone would complain if it were
longer than four lines now, but, people being people, you never can
tell. From my own personal opinion, though, please refrain from
including political or religious proclamations.

3. In Thunderbird:
   Select Tools -> Account Settings
Select the appropriate mail account. This is the title line for the
account, the one that contains the account name, usually just above the
line that says "Server Settings". (If you have more than one mail
account, you can have different signatures for each).

Check the "Add this signature box" and select "Choose".
Navigate to the appropriate signature file.
Select the file and then "Open".
   Select "OK".

That's it. Thunderbird will now use that signature for all outgoing
email for that particular account. As long as you don't change the name
of the sig file, you won't have to touch Thunderbird again. If you ever
want to change the signature, you only have to change the contents of
the signature file.

There is an add on for Thunderbird called Signature which can be installed from
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/578.

Just create a custom signature with the hyphens inserted as the first line.

"I use Thunderbird. Is there a way to automatically add the hyphen
hyphen space in thunderbird?"

I don't know about "automatically", but what I do is keep a draft email
(subject: signatures) in the Templates folder with the various
signatures I use at times, along with some URLs that I use almost every
day. In it, I include the "hyphen hyphen space" line in the signatures
where I want it to appear. When I need that signature or URL, I go to
that template email (which is open already 'cos I use it so much) and
copy & paste the required lines.

I keep the draft email in the Templates folder rather than the Drafts
folder 'cos it's harder to accidentally delete it there (especially with
the changes that came with the new update recently).

Thunderbird has excellent support, so if you want to pursue this
further, I suggest going to their forums and asking about it there.
I've always gotten good help there when I've asked for assistance. :-)

RE: [LegacyUG] More Lumping and Splitting

2007-08-20 Thread Jack Earnshaw

If that isn't clear enough
to copy they send you a newly written certificate - fraught with problems as
it may introduce new errors into what was already a transcription.

You may also buy a certificate from the local registrar. In most cases this
is also a modern transcription of the original entry, but a few register
offices are now using the same photocopying technique as the GRO.

Lastly, for marriages, you can also obtain a copy of the church register - a
lot cheaper of course as it need only cost the price of a photocopy.

But the main point I am making is that there are up to 3 different sources
for a single certificate - GRO, Local registrar, church (marriages only).
And, most importantly, the three can have different information on them. The
number of sources in some ways can be 5 - transcript of GRO entry, photocopy
of GRO entry, transcript of local entry, photocopy of local entry, copy of
church marriage entry.

When I looked at the parish church copy it had a different
name for the witness (his son William Henry THORNE).

I happen to use the "lumper" method, but would differentiate between these 3
distinct sources of the information. I believe that, strictly, the local
registrar's information is the true master and that the GRO is a secondary
source.

Then again... if all users had a 'standard' signature beginning with

RE: [LegacyUG] Error 76

Bill,

I haven't seen this problem in Vista and I was just spending some time this
morning in Publishing Center.

The preview, printer and printer setup buttons should be grayed out when
you're editing a chapter. Previewing is done through Publishing Center
itself.

It's possible that the book file is corrupted. Try removing that chapter
and then adding it back. If that doesn't help, you may need to completely
delete the book and start over.

A lot of people have dumped Vista and gone back to XP! I hear the computer
stores are being kept busy doing this!

[LegacyUG] county as a person

2007-08-20 Thread Janis Gilmore
In the same vein as a Surname persona, which collects surname-pertinent
data, I have a persona for each of the four counties in which I do the most
research. I enter "events" such as courthouse burnings, iconic moments in
history (the night the dance hall blew up, the Jesse James bank robbery,
etc) It makes a nice little county history, which comes in handy for
creating interesting family narratives.

I used to use TMG (The Master Genealogist), and someone on that list had
created a really inventive way of recording census, which involved creating
a person with the state surname, and county given name, etc.

I would be interested to know if others in Legacy are creating other kinds
of research "individuals."

Dermot,

That is the correct dates for the Legacy cruise.

We will still be monitoring and answering emails but please be patient for
responses from us! We'll be really busy the first five days with classes
and then the rest of the week we'll be having other learning experiences

No definite date has been set yet for the release of v7.

Jim,

No firm date has been mentioned yet, although I seem to remember
Sherry saying it would be after the Legacy Cruise this year, which I
believe takes place 19 Sep to 01 Oct (I can be corrected on those
dates).

Hope that helps,

Dermot.

Re: [LegacyUG] Favorite Legacy Tip

2007-08-20 Thread myrna20
If there are no birth or death dates available for someone I
ALWAYS add "Est" to my birth date. All other dates are as I
receive them, i.e, about, cir, etc. This way I know it is plus or
minus about 20 years and gives me something to look for. I know
that anything with the Est is MY''' estimate and not someone
else's.

My default is also set to Living = NO.

[LegacyUG] Vacation

2007-08-20 Thread myrna20
Hello Listers,

I have really enjoyed reading all the 'favorite Legacy tips.'
Some I know and some I didn't - see, an "older" person can still
learn new tricks.

I am trying to beat the hurricane out of Mexico (I am down south
of Guadalajara).I am headed for Texas Wednesday morning. I will
cancel my message board until I return since access to a computer
will be iffy at best.

Please remember to change your subject line so when I do return I
can quickly go through the archives.

Thanks all,
Myrna

Dave,

You the man!! I knew Renee's tip, but not the distinction between
left- and right-click. Looks like you even surprised Geoff too, which
is extra kudos to you ;)

Re: [LegacyUG] Siteing sources for Griffiths Valuation ?

2007-08-20 Thread Dermot McGlone
Slightly OT, but just to add a little more to this, for those of you
not familiar with Griffith's Valuation, the following is copied from
http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php:

" Irelands Valuation office conducted it's first survey of property
ownership in Ireland from 1848 to 1864. This survey became known as
"Griffiths Valuation" after Richard Griffith who was the director of
the office at that time. The survey was used to determine the amount
of tax each person should pay towards the support of the poor within
their poor law union. This involved determining the value of all
privately held lands and buildings in rural as well as urban areas to
figure the rate at which each unit of property could be rented year
after year. The resulting survey was arranged by barony and civil
parish with an index to the townlands appearing in each volume.
Griffith's Valuation can be used as an excellent census substitute for
the years after the Great Famine as censuses prior to 1901 were
destroyed."

Hope this helps,

Dermot.

Re: [LegacyUG] Alphabetizing Names

2007-08-20 Thread Dermot McGlone
In the Irish phone books, Mac and Mc appear together. They are both
treated as Mac for filing purposes, therefore appearing after Mab...
and before Mad... Names like Macken would appear in the middle of all
the McK's, for example. Spaces, if the exist between the Mc and the
remainder of the name, are ignored. For instance, I write my surname
McGlone, but my father usually (but not always) writes Mc Glone. it's
a matter of personal preference.

Those with a prefix O' (or O followed by a space), are listed before
any other O... surnames (such as Oates, Etc.).

As far as I know, Fitz's are generally treated as ignoring the space
(if there is one, most people don't use the space here at all).

Hope this helps (and doesn't confuse too much!)

Regards,

Dermot.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7

2007-08-20 Thread johan
Quoting Renee Zamora <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Does anyone know if exporting map coordinates into the gedcom file is covered
in the new Legacy 7?

I saw here at some point a question about it and the response was that this is
not a standard gedcom feature. Things have progressed however since gedcom came
along and what is the purpose of having a geodatabase with lat/long if you are
not able to use them on your website?

Best regards,
