Re: Yosemite and voice commands

2015-08-15 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Alex,

Sometimes there’s speech and sometimes there isn’t. I think it depends on
whether there are new messages or not.
I hope I shall get feedback from him now he’s back home and having to use his
Mac on his own.

Cheers,

Anne

Our client has problems with his hands. He can only press one key with
each hand and has trouble finding his way around the keyboard.
We discovered that Dictation in the Accessibility pane of System
Preferences offers a huge range of commands, and you can assign new ones
for yourself. You can even assign commands to key combinations such as
Cmd-Shift-d which works for sending mail messages or going to the Desktop.
With the judicious placing of markers on certain keys and the addition of
quite a few voice commands, our client managed to learn to use Mail and
Safari to the degree that he needs them.

If anyone else is facing this kind of difficulty, I’d be happy to pass on
any tips I’ve learnt over the past few days.

No, I mean what the motherboard can handle. It's based on the
motherboard in the system.
Regardless this is all symantics and basic hardware requirements. So
find out (by calling apple or looking up the model) the max memory.

If it can take 4, you need to buy 2 sticks of 2 GB.
It's based on what the motherboard can handle, not what amounts you
can cram into each slot. They make 16 GB sticks, but if there's a
limit on the total memory, that won't do you any good. So the upper
bound is placed on you by the motherboard and it's design, not by the
slots.
So here's what needs to happen:
Call apple, provide them the serial number and ask what the max amount
of memory is that the system can take.
It will be an even number obviously, so 2 4 8 16.
Divide that by 2 (so 4 becomes 2, etc) and buy 2 of that amount.
So:
2 GB = 2x1GB (what's already there if there are two slots)
4 GB = 2X2
8 GB = 2x4
16 GB = 2x8
This is done so that the reads from ram will be quicker. It's a lot to
explain, so if you're curious just google dual channel ddr3 and you're
bound to get some results.

Hi.

I recently bought Ondesoft iTunes converter. it’s been working fine until
the latest iTunes update It’s been recording ok, but seems to tack something
on to the end, like a part of another song, audio book etc. Does anyone
know of a good iTunes recorder for the mac that won’t tack things on . the

no updates available. Maybe they are rolling it out in waves and my n

  Hi All,

Using VoiceOver, what is the easiest way to answer a Skype call on a Mac? In
Windows one would have to configure the accessibility shortcut for answering a
call with Alt+Up Arrow under the Tools menu/Options. Is there a similar
configuration change required on a Mac or is there a default command that works
out of the box?

  Thanks,

What you can easily do doesn't mean it's still doable. You need to
insure the limit, because you'll be wasting your time if you stick in
2 4 gb sticks if it only supports 4 gb. Also you get faster speeds
through duel channel, so 2 2 gb sticks would be best in that case.
Best solution would probably be to call apple/take it to a store.

Re: macbook requirements to run osx 10.10?

2015-08-15 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
What year is the Mac that they have? Yosemite and El Capitan run on 2009 or new
model Macs. Also, it wouldn't hurt to upgrade the ram. I have 4 GB of ram in
this thing and it ran perfect with Yosemite. It may not be necessary but who
knows how slow the Mac will run with only 2 GB of ram. HTH.

Hey guys. To add to this, the hotkey to answer a call is Command+Shift+R and
the command to end it as other people have said is Command+Shift+H.

If he wants to open Mail, then compose a new message, all with speech, does he
get VoiceOver feedback? That is, does VO say anything when Mail launches, or
the message composition window appears? I'm hoping the total lack of speech is

Re: Answering a Skype Call on a Mac

2015-08-15 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Shift Command H to hang up a call.

When the notification pops up to answer, I VO Right arrow twice and there is an
accept button. I press VO space on that.

Re: Yosemite 10.10.5 and IOS 8.4.1 released

2015-08-15 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Mark,

There was never a risk of me not being able to revert to OS X 10.10.4, but I’d
done the update on a client’s MacBook Air with no problems and felt that there
must be a solution to my own problem on my MacBook Air.
I’ve been a Mac user for nearly 20 years, so very little scares me. I was more
irritated by the Mail problem than worried by it. I just thought that it might
happen to someone else and the fix might come in handy.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Yosemite and voice commands

2015-08-15 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Alex,

I forgot to mention that my client is very comfortable with his iPhone, so the
Trackpad Commander was also part of the mix.
We set a voice command to speak selected text and there is already a voice
command to select all.
We certainly had no problems with VoiceOver interfering with voice commands,
but we were really doing quite simple tasks. Our client isn’t interested in
reading books or writing documents. He just wants to look things up on the
internet and send e-mails and read them. The trakpad commander provides the
ability to read by sentence or paragraph, or whatever you want using the rotor.

Cheers,

Anne

IOS update is stuck for me.

2015-08-15 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi.

I was notified that there was an I phone update but have not seen it for my
Computers as yet.

However when I try to update my I phone six plus, there is no update button. I
have looked all over the screen, even turning Voice Over back and on but the
download button is dimmed. I have also started my phone. So anyone, what to
do please?

Thanks.

Kawal.

I did the update to 10.4.1 yesterday and Mail went constantly busy. Having had
to force quit it, I repaired disk permissions again (I always do that
immediately after an update), but no joy. I reinitialised the PRAM with no
success either. So finally I resorted to downloading the combo updater and that
fixed the problem.
I hate to think how an inexperienced Mac user would deal with this.

I too wish you well with your Mac.

I have been using a Mac since 2110 but unfortunately, have to use Windows at
work. It took me a very long time to feel at home on a Mac and at home do not
use Windows even though I have the latest VM Fusion licence but not on my Mac.

I love the Apple devices and have an I phone 6 plus and an Apple Watch and a
Mac Mini also along with my I Mac.

Thanks.

Preserving iTunes audiobooks when performing a clean install

2015-08-15 Thread Daniel McGee
Dear all

I have a lot of audiobooks that I've purchased from iTunes. When El capitan is
release in the autumn, what would be the best way of getting them back into
iTunes if I was to perform a clean install of the new os, rather than the
regular upgrade?

Thanks in advance for any help with this task..

Re: Yosemite and voice commands

2015-08-15 Thread Alex Hall
I'm glad you mentioned this. I've often thought that speech commands and
dictation on the Mac can be almost as good as Dragon, but much more accessible.
The problem I always run into is that VoiceOver and dictation don't play nice
together. Even with headphones in, VO speech is automatically muted when
dictation starts, offering no real-time feedback as you speak. Not only do you
not know what's being typed out, you have no way to monitor commands. Saying
"switch to mail" may switch to mail, but VO never says anything about it and it
takes some fiddling just to get any kind of speech back. I'd love to be able to
add dictation to my bag of tricks (not to mention justification for using a
Mac) but I can't currently do so for VO users.

All that to say: have you overcome this problem? Is there a setting or feature
I'm missing that lets VO and dictation work together? I really hope there is!
I'd also be curious about adding custom commands. Thanks!

Re: Recommendations for Antivirus Programs.

Hello,
I was a bit hesitant to try Adware Medic at first, but it looks as if
the company who makes it has recently been acquired by Malwarebytes.
I've used both Eset and Malwarebytes on my Windows machine in the

Thanks for the info.

Answering a Skype Call on a Mac

2015-08-15 Thread Mauricio Molina
Hi All,

Using VoiceOver, what is the easiest way to answer a Skype call on a Mac? In
Windows one would have to configure the accessibility shortcut for answering
a call with Alt+Up Arrow under the Tools menu/Options. Is there a similar
configuration change required on a Mac or is there a default command that
works out of the box?

Thanks,

Mauricio

Yosemite and voice commands

2015-08-15 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello listers,

Those of you who do Mac training might be interested in the experience we had
this week, teaching a Mac beginner with very little computer experience of any
kind.
Our client has problems with his hands. He can only press one key with each
hand and has trouble finding his way around the keyboard.
We discovered that Dictation in the Accessibility pane of System Preferences
offers a huge range of commands, and you can assign new ones for yourself. You
can even assign commands to key combinations such as Cmd-Shift-d which works
for sending mail messages or going to the Desktop.
With the judicious placing of markers on certain keys and the addition of quite
a few voice commands, our client managed to learn to use Mail and Safari to the
degree that he needs them.

If anyone else is facing this kind of difficulty, I’d be happy to pass on any
tips I’ve learnt over the past few days.

Cheers,

Anne

I hate to think how an inexperienced Mac user would deal with this.

2015-08-15 Thread Anne Robertson

own blank document template with the settings you like.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Anne,

is this setting still just for the document or is it ment for all documents?
So, do I need to activate this in every new document?

All the best
Jürgen
