RE: Importing IP block list in IIS7

2010-07-08 Thread Ken Schaefer
The configuration for IIS is simply a bunch of XML files
(applicationHost.config and web.config).

Setup Word (or whatever text editor you want) to do a find-n-replace and put
the necessary XML tags in. Then cut-n-paste into the website's web.config file.

Cheers

Why do this at the web server level as opposed to the firewall? Just curious.

You could also have a look at the extenders that use CAT 5 from places like:

http://www.rose.com/

http://www.networktechinc.com/

I've only played with some low end extenders
from Rose. We bought some for a POC, but never put them into production.
They seemed to work as advertised, however.

What's your quad video card of choice?

Well the restore only took an hour or less. Server came right back up without
any problems and all my data is there too. AD replicated to the restored
server (it wasn't the main DC with the FMSO roles) instantly and everything is
good to go! Thanks for the tips everyone.

2010-07-08 Thread Richard Stovall
I don't have much experience with 2008's "Windows Server Backup", but I do
have some with 2008 R2's. Isn't the backup really just a vhd? If so, just
put the single backup disk in another server momentarily and copy off the
vhd. Mount with tool of choice and extract the required data.

For that matter, however, image one of the RAID1 disks and mount the image.
If it's just the OS that's hosed your data should all be intact.

Or some variation of both of the above.

Or am I missing something?

Odd. When I spoke with HP tech, they said that it WILL delete the data on the
disk and they recommended NOT to reinstall the OS using smartstart. I spoke
with the basic HP tech for Proliant servers, and asked for Level 2 escalation,
and that person confirmed it would delete the data... (???)

Who knows... I'm just using the Windows 2008 Restore feature right now
anyways. I will update everyone later when it's complete.

Hopefully it works as advertised.

Subject: 2008 server crash!

I have a Windows 2008 x32 server (HP Proliant ML310 G5p) that just crashed.
When booting, its giving me a C00218 error (the registry cannot load the
hive, etc.). The server is also a domain controller.

Few things to note:
1. I have other DCs in this domain so I'm not so concerned about that.
2. Logical disks setup was a RAID 1 array (containing OS), and a RAID 0 array
(1 single disk - used as the Windows 2008 backup device) 3. I should have a
valid data backup on the single logical disk (raid 0)

I was condidering reinstalling the OS using HP Smart Start CD, but I am leary
in that I believe using Smart Start to reinstall the OS will WIPE the RAID 1
array and data on it, I do NOT want to do this. I'm having difficult getting
clarification from HP whether I can use Smart Start WITHOUT touching the
partitioning/data (english is a problem).

What would you recommend?

My first thought is to try and install Windows 2008 manually from a CD to a new
directory (c:\windows2). Once the OS is built, I should have an idea whether
the data on the disk is corrupt, and if necessary, restore from the backup disk
(located on the single physical disk in a raid0 array).

My second thought is to boot from a Windows 2008 CD into the recovery console
and try a disk repair, etc.? It's been years since I done this so I'm kind of
fuzzy on the process, but I vaguely recall this is something that can be done?

Ideas welcome.

This was a backup using Windows 2008 Server Backup tool. It does a shadow copy
backup basically. I have NEVER done a restore using this program yet, only
just started using the Windows 2008 Backup tool (I mostly use Symantec
BackupExec for my major server, but this smaller one we opted for Window 2008
Server Backup tool built in to the OS).

No software raid. ALL hardware RAID. RAID 1 for the OS, and a single disk
(RAID 0) for the backup drive (there is NO drive letter for this drive as
Windows 2008 backup tool somehow controls the drive WITHOUT making a drive
letter... its kinda odd)

It is sad, but we're not ready for Win7 yet. I, for instance, have
never touched it. As a team, we're not ready to support it.

I think he is indicating he wants to prevent certain countries from viewing
content on only some of his web sites not all at once. Something like China
can view site a but not site b or c. Where as the US can only see site b
but not a or c type of thing.

First question I would have was what type of backup did you do? Did you do
files or did you do the image. If it was an image I beleive you start from
a CD and tell it to restore the image from backup. If it was files then you
will need to know what the Smart Start will and will not do. Was this a
software RAID?

I would guess that you would need an external optical drive and that doing
an over the top install would work. If you want to make it a clean install
then you would need to pull or find the drivers for the device first and put
them on media that would be available after you blow away the current
install. Several others said, maybe a month ago (?), that they had done
this to other "Mini"/Netbook machines. Personally I have not seen a netbook
type of machine that would take more than a Gig of RAM and this one claims
to offer that as an option, nice.

Re: Xerox Global Printer Driver

2010-07-08 Thread Tom Miller
I tested the Global Driver here and it works fine, but some print options don't
appear on my WorkCentre copiers. For example staple was missing. Hence I
don't use it. It's not "global" if those sort of options are missing.

>>> Roger Wright  7/6/2010 4:59 PM >>>
I thought it interest that it supposedly will print to almost any
PCL/PS printer regardless of vendor or model.

Aside from the somewhat dubious legality of them "hosting" other vendor's
applications, I've always heard good things about them.

In an mid-size enterprise environment, I'd recommend you use group policy to
roll-out the applications you want installed and uninstalled. (In a larger
environment, something like SCCM would be appropriate, but I know it isn't for
you!) :)

To most organizations, what's the difference to them when 2003 Server goes
off mainstream support next week, anything? Security updates will still be
released, as near as I can tell just new features and bug fixes won't be
taken care of unless you pay, of which in my experience is a very rare need.

We're trying to block whole countries with a list of 100's of IP/Subnets and
it would be a nightmare to manually put in.

OT: Extended VGA/DVI Cables

2010-07-08 Thread Harry Singh
All:

I want to setup about 6 spare Dell monitors in a room adjacent (about 25 -
35ft) to my server room. I know they KVM's with cables that support that
length (i believe), but since i'm sure some of you have much more experience
with this type of setup, could you make some recommendations on the type of
cable/product i should be looking for and where I could get them?

I now have an unused Dell PE 2960 which i'm going to outfit with 2
quad-video cards and want to run Whatsup Gold, Cacti, Spotlight, %name your
SNMP monitor here% etc

Cheers,

Harry.

You need SP3 for 2007 to get what you want. The alternative a lot of customers
do is run a script that sends nag emails when passwords are due to expire say
14, 10, 5, and 1 days in advance.

How do you guys handle VPN users not getting a "password will expire in xx
days", or have any of you seen this behavior? Someone on Expert's Exchange
describes our issue perfectly: "I have remote user's running Windows XP Home
and they use VPN to connect to my Win2000 Server running Small Business Server
2000. When they connect they enter their username/password. All of this works
just fine. The problem I'm having is that they don't get notified that their
password is going to expire until it is expired. They can change it at that
time, but I want them to get the warning. "

I have this in a .CMD file that SMS pushes once per WinXP PC to handle our
imaged systems joining the domain:

net stop wuauserv
REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v
AccountDomainSid /f
REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v
PingID /f
REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v
SusClientId /f
net start wuauserv

I also checked the 'Driver' and 'Setup' paths for the SQL Native Client
DLL in 'HKLM\Software\ODBCINST.INI\ODBC Drivers' and copied the
sqlncli.dll from a functioning workstation into the path specified
(c:\winnt\system32) in the registry key, and registered it. This also
did not work.

The Windows XP OS is at SP3 level so it is not an MDAC issue as some
threads I have looked at suggested it may be.

Does anyone have any further suggestions please? Any at all!!!

Thanks,

Mark

No upcoming password expiration notice for VPN users

2010-07-08 Thread David Lum
How do you guys handle VPN users not getting a "password will expire in xx
days", or have any of you seen this behavior? Someone on Expert's Exchange
describes our issue perfectly: "I have remote user's running Windows XP Home
and they use VPN to connect to my Win2000 Server running Small Business Server
2000. When they connect they enter their username/password. All of this works
just fine. The problem I'm having is that they don't get notified that their
password is going to expire until it is expired. They can change it at that
time, but I want them to get the warning. "

Which took me here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221977

We have Exchange 2007 and I'm wondering if this still applies.

What OS? If XP, check "net time /querysntp". If 7 or Vista, check "w32tm

I think the most likely scenario is that a user changed the time*, but who
knows?

* They can't do that, IIRC, unless they're either admins on their boxes or
have been given the right through group policy.

This is why I highly recommend hidemyass.com

For a small monthly fee, you can do pretty much whatever the hell you want.
For example, friends of mine in the UK use it to watch US TV shows on Hulu

Weird system calendar event

2010-07-08 Thread RichardMcClary
Greetings!

One of our call center agents found himself unable to enter the correct
date on a case...

IIRC, yesterday was July 7, 2001. Any attempts he made to create a new
case insisted that it was June 16, 2010, and nothing beyond that date
could be accepted by the data entry app.

I checked event logs this morning (App, Sys, and "MS Office"). All was
well until about 8:35 AM. Then, events in all 3 event logs became
"6/16/2010". That is, scrolling up and down the logs, I see the correct
dates showing until 8:38 AM. Then I see a string of entries showing
"6/16/2010".

All events after manually setting the date show the correct date
("7/7/2010"). Other than perhaps the user inadvertently clicking the
time/date tray icon and just happening to click on June 16, any ideas as
to what might have caused this?

Thanks...

all I've managed to do with the freeware tools I've used is to convert the
video but there was no audio to go with it on the down-converted file.

The Flip camera saves it's files in MP4 format. Anyone know of something

Subject: SQL Native Client install error

Hello all,

Has anyone come across the following error when trying to install the SQL
Native Client?

I have this issue on four Windows XP SP3 machines, yet I managed to install the
client on ten other XP SP3 workstations without a hitch.
I have attempted the install as a Domain Admin and a Local Admin but I get the
same error each time.  I have checked registry permissions and nothing in there
is incorrect.

I spoke to my Microsoft Great Plains support company who advised me to 'Google
it' (yes, money well spent), which I did, but I am still none the wiser.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

Many thanks

Mark

RE: SQL Native Client install error

2010-07-08 Thread Ziots, Edward
Negative we just installed it via Software Deployment GPO last week
didn't see that issue and I have put this on plenty of machines via
silent install and not seen this issue.

Can you run regmon/filemon when you do the install on the suspect
workstation and see if you can find an access denied, or other error in
the logs and post to the group. This is where I would start
troubleshooting.

Re: Duplicate SID's

Duplicate sids aren't that much of an issue, excepting the local user
security issue. Not running sysprep is an issue. It resets all sort of other
things.

Re: EXTERNAL:report of disk space utilization

2010-07-08 Thread Anders Blomgren
Couldn't find original post so I'm replying to this but you can actually use
fsrm for the simple case OP wanted. The storage reports wont do it but you
can setup a soft quota on subfolders and then generate a daily report on
that quota.
