PESOs - Two More from NorCal Meet
I've been working on photos all day since I recovered them. Then I started wondering how to share them. I can't compete with the great shots that John has already shared, and Godfrey's two, and more great shots to come from Bruce and Shel and others, I am sure. So I decided to dribble out about six photos as PESOs, probably in twos. Then I'll direct you later to a GESO with about ten others that you haven't seen. Not that you are waiting with bated breath, but you might find it interesting to see what each of us noticed, shooting in the same area, that the others didn't. Or did, as the case may be. I really have no decent shots of PDMLers, it seemed others were doing that, and the few I got turned out poorly. Besides I want CREDIT for some PESOs! ;-) (Since I haven't done that many.) So here are two PESOs from the recent NorCal PDML meet, probably my favorites: Fern Gradient -- Japanese Gardens http://members.aol.com/eactivist/PAWS/pages/ferns.htm Fat Watch -- History Park http://members.aol.com/eactivist/PAWS/pages/watch.htm These are slightly smaller with a slightly lower resolution than I normally do, because I was/am planning on posting a group of shots from the outing. Comments welcome, of course. Marnie aka Doe :-)

The usual warranty period on an item like that is 1 year (here in the UK), so what is the warranty period? As Mike mentioned, if something still breaks even after a year (here in the UK), then there is still provision within the law to follow up. An item has to be fit for the purposes for which it was sold. People have chased the makers of faulty goods through the small claims courts here with some success. It is time, but if successful, it isn't money (costs can be claimed, including damages). RE: Portable Storage Devices (and Viewers)
As my personal experience, friend at one agency was issued an early X-Drive, and it might be even worse than Marnie's ImageTank... Abysmally slow and small battery. Bear in mind that the autonomy figures on that website are unclear about verification. Some devices offer verification which reads the card two times, comparing the data. Which may or may not halve the times mentioned there (the website is mostly compilation of others experiences, so not truly a test of all devices!)... Good light! fra

Hi Shel, as you were asking about how to name them, I assume you are interested in them. Excellent comparison of the devices can be found here: http://fhoude34.free.fr/PortableHD.htm It lists the total GB you can transfer before running out of juice, transfer speeds, FAT32 compatibility,... Re: Portable Storage Devices (and Viewers)
Hi, another concern of mine about these devices is that most of them seem to not be well shock protected. The devices I was able to see insides of (the ones that have user-changeable HDD and somebody posted photos on internet), do not have any shock protection for either the PCB with electronics or the harddrive itself. I assume 2.5 notebook drives have reasonably rugged mechanics inside, but still, the makers of rugged, drop-proof notebooks like Panasonic Toughbooks and others _all_ use shock-proof-mounted HDDs in them, not just normally screwed on. And PCBs with electronics can desolder from shock. I have seen enough damaged notebooks this way, where a chip has partly separated itself from the motherboard by some shock. This usually meant dead notebook or whole motherboard replacement. What I would like to see in such an unit would be: 1) shock-mounted innards. Electronics AND hdd. 2) in the best models, dustproof and spilllproof 3) easy and reliable verification of transfers 4) running on interchangeable batteries (rechargeable (secondary) AAs seem to be the best, as you can get longlasting primary Lithiums when you can't recharge the NiMHs, _with_ voltage regulation (so for 5V HDDs, running from 5-6AA cells _with_ regulated voltage down to stable 5V. The Compactdrive is unregulated, sadly. Is that asking too much ;-) ? I guess it's again the old quality vs. quantity... Or wait until solid state memory cards are big and cheap enough to hold all the photos without need for separate HDD. Or for somebody with money-no-concern attitude, get a rugged tablet PC with built-in CF slot or external USB/firewire reader... that's a lot more expensive than these standalone storage devices though... Good light! fra

Re: SMCP-FA versus Takumar-F? Surprise!
The FA is one of the worst lenses I've ever mounted on a camera. From 28-50 it's bad, from 50-90 it just gets worse. Contrast, sharpness, flare, focusing, build quality, all off the charts.the bottom that is. I had to give it two or three chances to focus on the right thing half the time. The 28-** lenses seem to have gradually declined in quality since the 28-105 FA power zoom and it shows in MTF scores, build quality and other areas. The old power zoom had good contrast and sharpnes, reasonable build quality, rapid and precise AF, very little flare, no zoom creep, good close focus 1:3 it even retracts to it's minimum length when powered off :) They're still listed new in the UK at around £300! I have even measured the focal length of few loupes I have at home, at is is roughly valid. However, some places mention the formula with additional +1 for magnification, so a 50mm lens would be 6x. Re: So who else shoots one handed? (was: The istD: Report From a First ...)
What Shel said. I only shoot one handed when walking the streets of an urban area. The cup of coffee I carry in the other hand is part of the fun, and it provides a bit of cover for the photographer. The first thing a potential subject sees is someone drinking coffee. Then the coffee comes down, the camera goes up, and I pull the trigger. So it does, PJ. I may be a little stupid, but I fail to see how this can be useful? The shutter speed can be changed by using the shutter speed wheel anyway! However, annother feature might be quite useful: After pressing the green button (using M og K lens), stop down aperture with index finger wheel (beside the srelease button). OT: Enablement
I just won an auction for a Metz 60 CT-2! I alwasys wanted at real powerful flash. I intend to use it as the main light in my home made Metz-strobe outfit. The 60 CT-4 would have been able to do TTL with the *ist D (with the right adapteres), but the 60CT-4 (two flash tubes) is much more expensive. So I settled for the CT-2, which can be purchased for app. 150 USD. So it does, PJ. I may be a little stupid, but I fail to see how this can be useful? The shutter speed can be changed by using the shutter speed wheel anyway! My *ist D doesn't show any apertuere value indication in the display, when turning the aperture ring. However, annother feature might be quite useful: After pressing the green button (using M og K lens), stop down aperture with index finger wheel (beside the srelease button). If I turn the aperture ring on the lens, while still holding down the stop down wheel, the bar graph in the viewfinder will indicate the relative deviation from the just determined Exposure Value. I haven't been able to find this documented anywhere and I don't remember reading this on the list so maybe I'm the first here to figure this out. * Put an M or K class lens on your *ist-D * Set the mode selector to M * Switch on the camera. * Stop down the aperture (The meter stays on). * Adjust the Aperture ring (No surprise the exposure indicator displays the change). * Adjust the Aperture Wheel... (The shutter speed changes!) It would be a PITA to use full stop down metering mode if you had to change the shutter speed with the front hand grip wheel, Pentax cleverly changed the function of the rear wheel to modify shutter speed in this mode! It makes stop down metering almost a joy to use. -- I can understand why mankind hasn't given up war. You may recall that my Black Beauty won't trip the flash. Russ said that it's likely a set of contacts in the shutter mechanism that trigger the flash that wear out commonly (after 20 years or so g). Or, sometimes they don't wear out, but just go out of adjustment or something. He didn't sound too concerned, but I'll get an estimate in a week or so. That's good news (they won't usually do an estimate if it's unrepairable). I mentioned that the thin weather-stripping around the prism cover (that I removed to see if all the contacts/solder joints looked okay) needed to be replaced. He seemed more concerned that such thin stripping may be hard to find - if that's their biggest problem, then I'm happy. Re: I have a wobbly monitor!
IQuoting Tan and Steve [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hey guys, Completely off topic here but in light of the recent monitor discussion, I too have a monitor problem. For some reason, and only at night time, the display on my monitor does this funny flickering, wobbly thing. I can continue to work on it but it kinda makes me motion sick. lol. Anyways, it never gets turned off, but ONLY does it at night, which I think is a very strange phenomena, I mean how can a CRT monitor tell the time?! I'm really wondering if it is time to take the plunge into the world of LCD screens, but even through the discussion you guys have been having, I am still seeing the benefits of staying old school. Suggestions gratefully accepted... :) I'm probably going to regret commenting here, since I'm not a scientific expert on monitors and the listmembers who are will probably make me feel stupid pretty soon, but ... First suggestion is that maybe the darn thing does flicker all the time but you only notice it at night. Secondly, I recently noticed that the monitor on my better-half's computer was flickering obnoxiously. (Although he was using it a lot, he had not noticed this himself. He was however getting lots of headaches. I suspect a connection.) So anyway we went shopping for monitors and ended up buying a nice new 19 LCD. With my only previous experience of LCD monitors being my otherwise wonderful notebook, whose screen's apparent contrast and colour balance changes drastically with a slight shift in the angle from which I view it, I was awfully sceptical of LCDs. I was amazed to discover that the monitors available in the stores didn't have this problem to anything like the degree that the one in my notebook does, and in fact I can't see ANY sign of that effect in the one I eventually recommended that he buy. We haven't done any serious photo editing on the new monitor (Samsung Syncmaster 912n, in case you care) so we've no reason to enter into issues of critical calibration. Admittedly just talking about eyeball comparison, nothing with scientific instruments, the picture quality looks fantastic to me. If I were going to replace my monitor, I would certainly start with this one and check closely into whether there was a valid reason NOT to buy it. ERNR

Howdy! I'm noticing that Pentax states power zoom functions are not available on the *ist film camera (which I have) and the *istD. The ZX-60 and the *istDS literature makes no mention of this. Still, some use large format in spite of the tremendous hassle factor involved. A medium format based DSLR will be similar in all important respect to a 35mm based DSLR. It can be made significantly smaller than a film 645 camera which means it could be smaller than pro DSLR from Nikon and Canon. Considering that it will be ideal for outdoor/landscape shooters, as Pentax plans to make a dslr that is not dependent on a power outlet, or anyone else wanting cutting edge quality, such a camera makes a lot of sense. It will in addition enable Pentax to compete in the high-end sector and be able to outperform the others as Nikon and Canon so far are restricted to the smaller 35mm format and the likes of Sony/matsushita are unlikely to make MF sized optic systems. The other MF manufacturers are highly unlikely to able to compete as they are all essentialy very small operations if not downright out of business. It your DSLR makes it possible to make poster sized prints from all your images somebody (quite a lot I think) will want one if the price is right. Pål

Re: Power zoom lenses
Scott, You can tell whether or not a body supports power zooming by looking at the lens mount (or a picture of the lens mount). Bodies supporting power zooming have two copper contacts inside the mount ring at about 5 o'clock. You can see them in the photos of a PZ-1p on eBay here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=15240item=3878929492rd=1ssPageName=WDVW Rick --- Scott Loveless [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Tue, 08 Mar 2005 15:29:32 +0100, Sylwester Pietrzyk [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yes they work.
