Re: How to achieve this lighting?

2013-10-29 Thread David Parsons
It's likely north light (or south light south of the equator) from
good sized windows (at least the ones indoors). Look in the eyes,
unless they've been retouched, they'll tell you everything. Then look
at the shadows, then the reflections on the skin. They all point to
large, diffuse light sources.

Traveling around for 3 years, he likely didn't have a softbox on him,
but used the excellent light available to him.

a lot of depth and contrast, but isn't harsh. How does one achieve that

Thanks, Eric. The light & colour is what attracted me to that shot as well.
Plus I liked the pose and the background wasn't too bad. And it was in focus ;)

Thanks, Bruce, JC, Jack, Paul, Don, Eric and Paul.

I thought it was a vintage Jag. My neighbor had one like this in the
late 1960s. It was almost always in the shop, so he had another Jag
and a Buick wagon so he could actually get to work most of the time.

Of course, my 1965 MG B wasn't much more reliable.

This first one was taken for purely sentimental reasons. That, and the previous
were taken at Limekiln park (see the map). When I was a kid, it was privately
owned park, and one of my family's favorite places to camp. We'd camp on a
levee near the beach next to a lagoon formed by the levee holding back
water from the creek. There are some nice woods, and a waterfall on the inland
side of the park. Those poles and the orange sign are for the construction
area to repair the damage from last year's big mudslide.

If I were to dig through slides that I have downstairs I would be able
to pictures I took of that stretch of beach ~40 years ago, attempting to catch
light shining through the backs of waves.

It's often entertaining to stop by one's favorite childhood haunts.

Re: Is the A* 135mm f1.8 on your Bucket List?

2013-10-29 Thread Zos Xavius
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/2066924

Spiratone samples. I don't know which formula here, but it looks
different than the Plura-Coat samples I looked at, so maybe the first
one. Bokeh is very interesting. I like it personally but its not
bokehlicious by any means. Still, very nice dof even on a crop sensor.

http://kiev.ko.slando.ua/obyavlenie/krayne-redkiy-svetosilnyy-soligor-135-mm-1-8-m42-ID6lspJ.html

Soligar 135 1.8 info. 15 blades!

http://www.pbase.com/pganzel/samigon_135mm_f18_on_maxxum_7d

Soligar 1.8 samples. I think the bokeh on the Spiratone is much
better. The soligar has hard distracting bokeh. Probably due to the
simplified lens formula. So I guess spiratone had two good to superb
135 1.8s. I would like to know what took the band pictures. I really
like the bokeh. I'm guessing it was not the plura-coat which I think
was newer and more rare and featured a much reduced optical formula.
The bokeh on the pluracoat samples I saw didn't look as dreamy. So
looking some more, the Y/S mount Spiratone 135 1.8 Telephoto was made
by Sun and the Plura-Coat that Mitake made was M42. The Sun lens
doesn't look multicoated, but has great bokeh. Interesting. I think I
want to find one of these lenses now. 135mm is a very useful focal
length on aps-c IMO.

Re: Is the A* 135mm f1.8 on your Bucket List?

2013-10-29 Thread Zos Xavius
That optical formula chart is amazing. Look at how they totally cheap
out on the Tokina 135. They omit a rear group in the spiratone that
the sigma has and the pentax looks like it has further corrective
glass. No ED glass. Fascinating. The Zeiss glass looks like the one to
get. Go figure. I'm guessing its A-Mount only.

k-5 in surgery...

2013-10-29 Thread Zos Xavius
I just heard back from CRIS on my K-5 that I sent in with a failing
sensor. Despite the LCD cover being obviously scratched and popped off
and the dented bottom plate it looks like they are going to fix it all
under warranty! This is like the best news I've heard all year and I
was so reluctant to send it in. It was my birthday last week, so I
guess this is like a hidden surprise present. I'm totally broke at the
moment and had no idea how I was going to pay for my K-5 to get fixed.
Now I can focus on fixing my 2 16-45s, selling one, fixing my 12-24,
and getting my better k-7 body fixed up and I shall soon have a
respectable kit once again. Of course its waiting for parts. CRIS
never seems to ever have parts. Its been there for over a week now, so
hopefully it won't take too long..fingers crossed!

When I took Walt to Bonny Doon beach, I slipped on the trail up the hill

donated some water and nitrates to the local bushes. On the way back
to the car I noticed some poison oak next to the trail, near where I
had slipped. A few days later, I confirmed that my hand had indeed
landed in the poison oak.

Like all California natives, I have a long list of poison oak stories.

I recently did a bit of research into it, and it's pretty interesting

I remember that. I got into a little bit of it, but was lucky enough to
get out with just a mild case on my fingers.

A friend of mine and his little sister were hospitalized by either
poison ivy or oak when I was a kid. Seems he'd started a little fire
down in a creek bed and was burning whatever vegetation he could pile
onto it -- some of which was the offending plant. They were both
standing over it, breathing the fumes and smoke that rose from the fire,
and it got into their eyes, throats, mouths, and just about everywhere
else on their bodies. Screwed them up pretty badly for weeks.

Since I’m considering this lens, why did you sell it? More specifically, were

I used to work on these cars ...

Jaguar XK120:

Jaguar XK140:

Note the differences in the body/fender line and the windshield in particular,
and in the grill. Dan's photo presented here was an XK120.

There was also the Jaguar XK150:

That was the last series prior to the original XK-E Type.

The XK120 was a pig to drive, but a delight to look at. I do remember vividly
the time when I was picking up a customer's car and he points to the fire
extinguisher ... "Be sure you know where this is." Prophetic: a fire broke out
in the engine compartment on my way to the shop, luckily I was able to put it
out before anything was damaged. ;-)

Paul, its mainly, from the images on the web, the 120 has prominent
curvature at the beltline, on the top of the door, while the 140 door is
basically a straight line at the beltline.

Re: PESO - (and VESO) The Christmas Train

2013-10-29 Thread Alan C
Yes, you're right. Lionel track was O gauge but all the early Lionel rolling
stock, including locos, were under-scale, closer to S than O. I was
confusing gauge & scale. I still have quite a bit of it and everything is
small compared to my stock of European origin. More recent Lionel trains are
both O gauge & O scale 1:48. I have a Texas Special A-B Diesel loco which is
full O scale. European O is a little bigger 1:43.5. BTW, according to what I
read on the Web, American Flyer never made S gauge stuff. The plot thickens!

I might just be tempted to dust everything off, put down a few meters of
track & take some side-by-side snaps.

Alan,
Minor points department, but the original Lionel trains were O gauge, not S.
American Flyer was S gauge, and a copycat.
Trust me, I got my first Lionel train over 63 years ago from my Uncle.
He was a Lionel train fanatic and had a collection of all their stuff,
back to tinplate.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Alan - the train in this photo is HO scale, roughly half the size of O.

When I was in the hobby shop buying the circle of track for these
trains I saw some modern O. Wow, nothing like the old Lionel stuff
that I remember from when I was a kid. Much more detailed and very
much made to look as real as possible. Also, very expensive. $50-$80
for a boxcar. Engine prices were in the Hundreds of dollars. That
would add up pretty quickly. Of course, O is pretty big, so you
wouldn't need much. Then again, from the conversation I overheard
while there, I'm guessing the train hobbyists have the same issues
with rolling stock as photographers have with lenses.

I'm putting up a smaller Christmas tree this year that will sit atop a
table. The table is big enough to accommodate a small circle of train
track. Rather than leave such an important task to the last minute, I
decided to test things out this weekend. (Not the tree. Just the
train.)

Killing two birds with one stone, I shot a little video with my iPhone
and tried out the video editing features in Photoshop CC for the first
time. Here are the results.

I was surprised at how quickly I figured out the video editor in
Photoshop CC. It was (Unlike most things in PS) quite straight
forward. I've used a couple of other video editors in the past and
they have many more features. But for slapping together a quick video
or slide show, this looks like it will do everything I need.

OOPS let me see if I can clear this up. I mis-rememered. It was late it
was dark I did not have lens in front of me. OK I'm old. My 135mm f1.8
is indeed the Spiratone. I thought I had owned the 85mm but it was the 135.
But I was sure when I was hunting up this lens I saw a JC Penny Label.
And I did, it was on a 28-80 3.5 tele . I also found my 90-230 Sears
tele. The JC Penny is a K- mount the other two are the old 42. Using
various adapters I tested these on K-01 and Oly 4/3s.
I also tested some Canon tread mount lenses from a rangefinder camera
with bad results - they only focus close-up nothing beyond a few inches.

Photos when I get time. Sorry about confusion but thanks for forcing me
into the storeroom.

I had a Sigma back in the film days that I bought at the Miami
International Camera
show back in the late 80's new old stock in the box. It was single
coated and was a flare
magnet and was bulky as hell on the front of my spotmatic without any
addtional
grip. Never used it much, sold it off in the late 90's with most of my
other none pentax
lenses.

Re: Red Flash

HI Ken. What makes you think an XK140 rather than a 120? The wheels lead me to
believe it's a 120. I think all the 140s came with wires, and they had a rear
bumper that wrapped around onto the rear quarter.

Re: PESO: Fall Colors (automotive content)

Yes, the first shot works well with the cars wrapping around the bend and the
fall colors complementing the red Ferrari. I believe it's a F355 GTS, probably
about 2007 vintage. I would like to see a touch of pavement blow the Ferrari's
bumper. If it were mine, I'd clone some in.

I remember seeing one of the photographers up ahead during the marathon and
making sure I tried to look better than I felt :) Which is quite an
improvement over the Wanaka half-ironman earlier in the year.

Cheers,

No doubt you have other similar replies, but I've used a short length of
inner tube (very useful old inner tubes). Wrap once around the tube and a
second time, this time fitting in a pencil or biro piece or equivalent. You
can then nip some cable ties up, and when it comes to removing it, you can
slide out the sandwiched packing part to give you room to cut the cable
ties, without any damage to whatever shape the tube is.

I did this once with mine, no evidence of anything ever being fitted.
