Camera bag for bike trip?
Hi all, Since it's never too early to start planning my next gear purchase, I've started obsessing on how I will outfit myself for our vacation in August... Our trip will include 4 days of tandem touring around Durango, Colorado. I'm trying to figure out the best way to bring my camera along. It will be a somewhat minimalist kit -- my k7, plus a lens or two... no tripod, no ginormous zooms. A backpack is one option, but I'm curious about handlebar bags and/or panniers... I know there are some cycle enthusiasts out there -- any thoughts? Thanks! -c -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Camera bag for bike trip?
Don't have any answers for you on the equipment side, but if you want to photograph the Durango Silverton Railroad while you're in the area, I can suggest a couple of good spots. Just plug the numbers into Google Maps search and it will show you where they are. Thanks, John -- I'll definitely check these out. I know that on one day of the trip, there will be a Race the Train event, in which the strongest (most foolish?) teams will endeavor to beat the train to Silverton. The rest of us will be on said train, and enjoy the ride downhill on bikes after. So, there should be some good photo ops going both ways. :) Bob/Scott/Mark/Subash/Godfrey -- Thanks for the suggestions. My biggest concern is minimizing the jiggle factor. I'll check out your links -- I like the Ortlieb camera insert idea... That might work for my everyday camera bag, too... which is often just my purse. Re: Photo bag and tripod bag on bicycle
I recently asked the list about his topicthe Ortlieb camera insert for the handlebar bag was recommended... I've ordered it, but it hasn't arrived yet, so I haven't been able to give it a try. I like the idea of being able to remove the handlebar bag easily when I leave the bike, but it sounds like you tote more gear than I would, so I'm not sure the handlebar bag would be roomy enough. Here's another interesting solution I came across, a Pelican case outfitted as pannier: http://www.phred.org/~josh/bike/briefcase_pannier.html Of course, what I really need is a nice, compact (EVIL?) camera to tote around on vacation :) Anybody have one of those that they like? -c -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: studio light brand suggestions
I quite like my Photogenics and would recommend anyone buying a serious set of lights to consider them. I'm new to the studio lights, but I will say that the photography school where I've been taking some workshops recently has Photogenics in their portrait studios. Considering they get used all day by full-time students, and then by hacks like me in the evening, they must be pretty good. -c -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: K7 formatting shortcut?
Menu, spin the back wheel a few clicks (sorry, I don't recall how many or which direction offhand and my K7 is in my truck), then one up click and a button push. Or something. It's easier if you use the control wheel for navigating the menus. William Robb Well, that's helpful! I had been in the habit of pushing menu, then distractedly counting clicks of the right arrow: onetwothreefourfivesixseveneight then tuning in again for the next several clicks... All in all, not a big deal, but... still. I can only assume it's set up this way to prevent accidental formatting of the card? Re: OT Need advice - My bike was stolen
I'm sorry to hear about your luck, John. My son's bike was stolen in December from his high school... it was literally his prized possession and the whole experience was a heartbreaker. Thinking about it still makes me reach for the ice cream... We did all the things you mentioned on your list, in addition to contacting local bike shops in our area to give them a description of the bike let the know that it was lost. We also offered a reward for its return, and included that information in the craigslist ad. That's great news! -c On Sat, Jul 10, 2010 at 2:08 PM, John Celio n...@neovenator.com wrote: A happy ending to my stolen bike saga! When I reported my bike stolen, the police and others suggested checking out the local weekly swap meet. This morning, a friend picked me up early and we headed over there. By mistake we ended up missing the parking lot turn-off and parked in the swap meet area. By pure luck, we parked two rows down from a big van that was FULL of bikes, and by even more luck my bike was one of the two dozen he had pulled out and set up in his stall. Now, as I mentioned in the original thread, I had never written down the serial number of my bike, so I couldn't just go claim it. I called the police, who showed up and said that if I could identify it as the same one from the description in my police report, they could probably convince the seller to turn it over. The seller was in no mood to cooperate and was very argumentative with me as I explained every mark and scratch on the bike. He had stripped off almost all the accessories I'd put on it, but there were clear distinguishing marks that I had described on the police report that were still evident. Eventually one officer pulled him aside, and after a few minutes the officer came back and told me to take the bike, it was mine. He later told me he had asked the seller for his business license or tax info, neither of which he had. When the officer said he would be forced to run a check on all the serial numbers on all the bikes in his van for stolen property, the seller quickly said he'd let me take the bike if we'd leave, and that was that! I wish I'd been smart and written down the serial number, because then the seller might actually be facing criminal charges. Who knows how many stolen bikes he's fenced for thieves? I've resolved to keep a record of every serial number of every item of value that I have, starting with my bike and camera equipment, so that the next time this happens I will be better prepared. OT: Wanted -- Snappy Retorts
Hello all, I'm kind of new here, been lurking around mostly, but I've seen enough to know that you'll be able to help me Here's my situation: Last night I started the first class of a ten-week workshop on Portraiture. As usually happens, the instructor came to the point where she wanted to get a rough idea of who she was dealing with. How many people shoot Canon? How many are Nikon shooters? She counted the hands that went up, and then, shaking her head side to side in the NO gesture, she said, Does anyone have anything else...? This is when my hand went up. She looks at me surprised, Sony? Nope. Pentax. Her look changes from surprise to an equal mix of confusion and concern. Do you /really/? I really do. Now, I am perfectly confident and comfortable in my choice of gear. I do not feel embarrassed or ashamed. I also prefer to let my photos do the talking, instead of the camera brand. Howeversometimes, I just want a good comeback. Something that demonstrates just how brilliant and independent-minded I am in my choice, and how superior it is. What do you say to the Canikon crowd to put them in their place? I would like to have something ready to go when I go back tonight for the start of the Creative Lighting workshop. :) Thanks! PESO: The Wonder Twins
Last week, I had the opportunity to shoot newborn twins. As a photographer, as a mother of 3, I thought I was up to the challenge... HA! My visions for smooshy faces, peaceful swaddled bundles, teeny bare bottoms... were no match for fussy 2 week olds with tummy trouble (reflux, milk allergies) and ferocious diaper rash. Re: Annoyed by BuyDig -- big Boo!
BOOO! Never used BuyDig, but several years ago, when we were young and young people still used email, my husband had the foresight to set up a junk email account for us... We never give our personal email addresses out when shopping, making a donation, setting up login accounts, etc.. Even the kids' sports teams or other organizations get the junk address... We check it every now then for something interesting, but for the most part, that's where our spam is. Which is good, because I am lax at weeding out email... there are currently over 5100 unread messages in my inbox, 7340 in the pdml folder, and over 11,456 in the junk pile... Is that bad? :) -c On Thu, Jul 18, 2013 at 3:26 PM, Igor Roshchin s...@komkon.org wrote: Big Boo to BuyDig for re-subscribing me to their junk-mail despite my explicit preferences set long time ago. I've been using BuyDig as one of the sources of photo equipment since 2005, when (IIRC) I bought my *istDS from them. As some PDMLers may remember, I've recommended them a few times here on the list as a mostly reasonable retailer (albeit not without occasional idiosyncrasies). In late June they started sending me their SPAM (aka UCE - Unsolicited Commercial E-mails), despite my strict preferences for not receiving any promotional and other junk. It turned out my preferences were reset to receive all junk. This has happenned for the 2nd time (the first time it happened at the end of 2008, and I made sure I unsubscribed in 2009). I know that some PDMLers don't mind if they have to delete a few extra spam messages. I do mind it: with the amount of different companies with which I shop for my work and for personal purchases, if I were receiving their subscriptions, all I'd be doing is cleaning my mailbox. Besides, when there is too much extraneous mail, the important messages tend to get lost among the junk occasionally. At work, I stopped purchasing supplies from a couple of companies who were notorious about spamming their customers. Once more, - big BOO to BuyDig for wasting my time and re-subscribing me to their junk mail. Re: I need a tripod
Hi Christine, Others here will have more to offer on the subject, I'm sure, but this one was recommended to me by an instructor at New England School of Photography a few years ago... http://www.calumetphoto.com/product/calumet-7100-tripod-with-three-way-quick-release-head/CK7114/ The price was right, it has served me well for my purposes. Re: OT - Skunk!!!
Ugh. My condolences. Our dog has had the same bad luck, a few times... the hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/detergent mixture does the trick for us... though I think you are supposed to let it sit for several minutes before rinsing. Bathing a cat has its own challenges, I imagine... good luck if you have to go for round 2. When I was a kid, I remember one steamy summer night the dog got out found a skunk. In her alarm at being sprayed, she ran around the house several times, and the odor poured in through all the open windows. K-30 vs K-50 vs....?
Hi all, A friend of mine has been looking for counsel on cameras... He is a fellow hockey (and soccer and football) parent, whose ps isn't getting the job done, and is ready to move up to a dslr. He has been looking at the Nikon Pentax offerings primarily, and seems to be settling on Pentax. Low light performance is critical for him -- he'll be using the kit lenses (55-200, 55-300), trying to get decent images in a hockey rink. So... the question is, which model? I'm not turning up much difference between the K-30 K-50... is there? For that matter, will prices on the k-5/k-5ll come to a comparable point (soonish)? I haven't used the k-30 or k-50 myself... I'm not sure if the K-50 shares that improvement, or not. But the K-5, K-5II and K-5IIs are all 14 bit systems, where (I believe) the rest are 12-bit. The sensor is good enough to take advantage of that extra headroom in the form of dynamic range (and some better low ISO performance). The K-30 and the K-50 share a 13EV dynamic range, where the K-5II is 14.1 (that's more than a full stop better). I think the K-5 is a Best Buy right now (you can still find the body for around $650) The K-5II is about another $250 ($896 at BH) and if he wanted to spend another $250 I would tell him to also consider the Nikon D7100 which is like getting the K-5II performance with a 24MP body ($1149 for the body). I can't say if either will give good results auto focusing those lenses in dim light, but while they will be better than a PS the best way to improve auto focus is to use fast(ish) lenses. Zooms are convenient, but a used FA 135mm 2.8 would probably cost less used than the 55-300 will new, and run rings around it in auto focus. Just something to think about. The K-5 is already in the K-50 ball park at a number of web retailers, but I don't think it improves much in auto focus over the K-30/50. I think its great that Pentax at least decided to offer some enticing features on their entry level models, but you know, even something as simple as a tilting LCD would have made a new camera at least *seem* worthwhile. Honestly I don't know what's going on with Pentax/Ricoh currently. I see a lot of wheel spinning but no real progress. How many times have you heard or given the advice that one of the most important characteristics of a camera is how it fits in your hand? I could see how changing the body of a camera could make a huge difference. If I had not been on the cusp of getting a K-5, the different shape of the body would have been a major incentive for me to upgrade from the K-x to the K-r (or since it's still talk like a pirate day, the K-a). By the same token, I could see how a re-spin of the K-01 that wasn't butt ugly could be a good thing (though I'll admit that it felt surprisingly good in my hands). If the flagship camera were still the K-20, or even the K-7, and they were just spinning new versions with no major improvements, I'd be seriously looking at a D7100 about now. However, there are very few pictures that I'm missing with the K-5 II, that I'd be able to capture with any camera that costs less than two or three times as much. There are probably shots that some other $800, or even $1600 camera body out there can get that the K-5 II can't, but I haven't run across them. Mind you, I would love for Pentax to come out with a new body that would compell me to upgrade, because in order to do so, would mean that it was infuckingcredibly amazing. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I grabbed the k-01, took the 60-250 off the k-5, slapped it on (whoa), and was back in business. Sort of. Minutes later, I tried the k-5 again, with the 21mm, and lo behold, it's working again. Later, at home, the 60-250 back on the k-5, everything seems to be fine. I'd send it in, but these little episodes are pretty random and infrequent, they could have the camera for weeks, trying to get it to show symptoms... In the end, I wonder if it's just simply because there's a computer inside the camera... and this is just analogous to the spinning pinwheel of death that everyone sees on their monitor now then...? It's beyond frustrating, though. Especially when shooting at sporting events where I don't have time for that nonsense. :( -c On Mon, Apr 8, 2013 at 7:21 AM, Rob Studdert distudio.p...@gmail.com wrote: On 8 April 2013 20:39, Bipin Gupta bip...@gmail.com wrote: That's all lovely but when I'm shooting the 5 mins of performance of the night that counts I want my top of the line body to just work, I find it incredible that Pentax delivers cameras that exhibit these fundamental engineering related problems. -- Rob Studdert (Digital Image Studio) Tel: +61-418-166-870 UTC +10 Hours Gmail, eBay, Skype, Twitter, Facebook, Picasa: distudio -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Boston PDML'ers please check in
Christine Nielsen, checking in... We were at our usual spot on Heartbreak Hill. My brother ran his 5th marathon today, and we were also watching for a cousin, and a couple of friends to come by. Long story short: my brother crossed the finish about one minute ahead of the blast. He was approx 500 feet away, in the chutes. Another friend of ours was with him. There were a nervous few minutes between the time I heard the first rumors of explosions -- texts were coming in, and my teenage son was also getting updates from the world beyond the Hill -- and the time I heard from my sister in law that Bill was ok. Still, it was tense until he managed to get home -- image the chaos in that vicinity, plus the post-marathon daze he must have been in. I think adrenaline carried him home. My cousin, and a couple of other friends, had just crested Heartbreak Hill when runners were told to stop. They were detained for a while until a headcount of runners had been taken. On my way home, eventually, heading south out of the city... at least 25-30 emergency vehicles heading into the city, lights flashing, passed on the other side of the highway. Finally home just 30 mins ago, turned on the tv news. That lasted about 3 minutes. GESO: Boston Marathon - Heartbreak Hill
Though the photos on the front page of today's Boston Globe tell a different story, these are the images I want to remember from yesterday. It's a loosely edited bunch, since I'm also sharing with friends family who are pictured, so pardon the lack of brevity. These are scenes from Heartbreak Hill, about 6 miles from the finish line. It totally sucks that the triumphs of these runners will be overlooked -- their accomplishments stand in stark contrast to the actions of the cowards who caused yesterday's tragedy. I think I saw that 78 yr old interviewed on the news last night... from Oklahoma, I think. There is footage of him collapsing at the first blast -- his legs wobbled in all directions he went down. Re: GESO: Boston Marathon - Heartbreak Hill
Thanks, Jack, Rick, Paul, Bob... I used to go to the marathon every now then as a kid, but have been faithfully attending for the past 5 years that my brother has run. It's his crowd -- the middle to the back of the packers -- that the event is really about for me. Not elite athletes, but they work so hard, many raise money for worthy causes, and surmount incredible personal challenges just to finish. To watch on Heartbreak Hill -- it's almost like you can't leave, even as the horde of runners slows to a trickle, because you want to encourage each one up the final slope. (Among other things) I am angry that some jackass coward got to upstage them on what should be their day, and rob them of that achievement. Bleh. In other news, I did enjoy the 60-250 out there. And there was a funny moment when, having been scanning the crowd for our friend Dave to come by, I finally spotted him...so I dashed across Comm Ave, high-fived him, and ran backwards up the hill to get the shot... planting myself right in front of the Official Photographer for the event. I heard him say whoa, whoa, whoa! behind me as I nearly ran into him, bum first. I didn't dare turn around... just got my shot dashed off. I hope he doesn't share the unflattering photo of my backside... lol... -c On Tue, Apr 16, 2013 at 11:11 AM, Bob Sullivan rf.sulli...@gmail.com wrote: Christine, A very nice set. Re: 2(Christine) + CollegeBoy = Chicago GESO
Thanks Christine, Alan, Frank Dan... ... and Paul, Chicago is my and my husband's alma mater, too! There are several new buildings since our day -- the Ratner Gymnasium, the Mansueto Library, the Max Palevsky dormitory just north of the Regenstein Library/south of the Field House, the Logan Arts Center along the Midway (the views!), and another dorm called South Campus (awaiting a name/big donation, I presume), which is on 61st, behind Burton-Judson dorm... Plus, the old Bartlett Gymnasium has been converted into a dining hall! It is interesting to see the University pushing farther south... I lived 2 years at B-J, and we never even went into the back yard of that building -- that was the campus perimeter, and beyond that, the dangerous wilds of the South Side. ;) Despite all the new construction, everything is very familiar, the kids all look the same, even. I'll have to look see what other campus photos I have from the weekend... BTW, ever read Devil in the White City? Re: VESO: 8 hours of snow MELTING

Did one battery, fully charged, do the trick for 8 hours? On Tue, Apr 23, 2013 at 9:09 PM, Charles Robinson charl...@visi.com wrote: This is the direction I like it to take.
