Which one do you mean? The current or the new one?
If you do now like the current one, you will love the new one :-)

Yes, it's on the NowPlaying screen, on the overlay (touch the big
artwork to get it).
Only works while playing Last.fm for now.

Yes, although probably through a context menu instead of the buttons.
The current buttons are a SqueezeCenter feature, replacing "repeat" and
"shuffle", yet you want these buttons on your local library.

1. Swipe left on the NowPlaying screen (that's where you start up).
Learn more about it here:
http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-the-iphone-skin-for-squeezecenter/how-to-use-the-ipeng-application/nowplaying/

2. It depends on the icon in the navigation bar. There's four "modes":
"|>" will play the item you select (and clear the playlist)
"+" will add to the end of the playlist
"|>|" (that's probably what you have activated) will add behind the
current track
"i/m" will bring up a TrackInfo menu

You can toggle between these modes by clicking on that status icon.

One issue: if the server sends a reply after you send a new one
(additional characters), the first response overrides the second one.
The way around is to wait a second or so before pressing "search".

Apart from that, iPeng should deliver the same results as any other
SqueezeCenter interface.

That should work fine.
Make sure you hit the sync button on the new player first and DON'T hit
that button on the target. Just selecting the player is enough.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Squeezebox Server 7.4 beta versions of erlands plugins

2009-07-21 Thread pippin

OK, I tried TrackStat, DP, SQLP and CB on my Ubuntu server and while it
slowed down the server dramatically during startup (I'll send you a log,
took 15min or so to start - without scanning) after that everything
seems to work fine.

The log file is full of ridiculous comments (not only from your
plugins), e.g. on "no space available". Since that's not true I assume
some permission conflict.

But starts to look real good.

It's a known issue with the detection of cache changes.
The problem is that SqueezeCenter always clears the playlists, even if
you do a "only scan new and changed files" rescan.

Flushing the cache is currently the only help.

Ok, so you do see SqueezeCenter and SqueezeNetwork and you can use
both?
That also means you know how to switch players between the sources
using the "Globe" icon? iPeng does not automatically move the player
between SN and SC, you have to do that manually:
http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-the-iphone-skin-for-squeezecenter/how-to-use-the-ipeng-application/nowplaying/

Now, when the next day you could not see the player, is this only in
iPeng or do you also not see it if you use SqueezeCenter/SqueezeNetwork
through the browser?
Is iPeng still connecting to the right source? On SqueezeCenter, you
will know it did if you can still browse your library?

If it's iPeng not connecting to the right source (automatically) again,
please try to set "Forget Last Server" in iPeng under "Settings->iPeng
settings".

If all of that doesn't help, please give me some more details about
your setup: Where do you run your SqueezeCenter, which version, what did
you do last, is the Receiver's LED blinking, which color does it show?

Probably.
Maybe some basics on how the Squeezebox works:
A Squeezebox is a "dumb" device and ALWAYS needs a server to work, it
can't do anything without one.
This server is either SqueezeCenter or SqueezeNetwork.
iPeng also ONLY talks to the server, never to the player itself. The
controller can talk to the player itself, but only for configuration
purposes, you can't play music or anything with it.

So yes, until you start SC, iPeng can't see your player.
What you CAN do, is to switch your player to SqueezeNetwork (that's
more or less a SqueezeCenter on the internet), but you'll have to do
that before you shut down the server. Have a look at the SvrPowerControl
plugin if you want to have it done automatically.
If you do that, you will have to connect iPeng to SqueezeNetwork as
well to see your player. Learn more about this here:
http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-the-iphone-skin-for-squeezecenter/how-to-use-the-ipeng-application/nowplaying/

SqueezeNetwork is not a player, but a server (source) that you can
connect your player to.

There should not be a real limit.
iPeng reads the Albums in chunks of 100 and then 300.
Could it be it's 700, not 650?
That would mean the last chunk (of 38 Albums) doesn't get read.
If it's really 650 it sounds more like the server doesn't send them
all.
Can you see which ones are missing?

What about the web interface?
Which SC version is this?
An individual artist doesn't get cached, so flushing the cache should
have no effect.

What do you see in the Web interface?
iPeng uses sorting by Year, Album under various artists, if you use
that same sorting (or Artist, Year, Album) you should get the same list
on both interfaces. This should theoretically make it easy to find out
what's missing.

That's weird because it's different on my controller.
On my controller, I can select a player and it will show all players,
even the ones on SN (the next iPeng version will do that, too).
Then I can select the player and I will get connected to that player,
and the controller will switch to that server, too (the next iPeng
version will do that, too).
Now if you want to switch the source for that player (say, from SC to
SN), I have to go to "Settings->Music Source" and select the other Music
Source there. THEN, the Player AND the Controller will switch to the
other source (the Controller is always connected to the same source as
the player).

In iPeng, that's currently a two-step process: You first have to switch
the Player to the other source and THEN you can switch iPeng. You can
switch iPeng immediately to the other source, but there will be no
player connected to it, then.

I don't claim it's particularly convenient (especially with only a
single player) and as I said, it will work a lot better in the next
version.

Is there anything special about the albums that are missing? Is it a
block of albums at the end or are there some missing in between?

Well, the next release is mainly about usability, Player management,
Synchronization, NowPlaying overhaul, context menus, some performance
improvements on the non-iPeng native stuff, things like that,..
Starts to look quite cool, especially the player management.
Then there's support for 7.4 and some new features in 7.4

And then with the release after that there's of course playback...

Nothing I can do within iPeng - I just can't search through data that
isn't there.
This is something that has to be solved on the server side, e.g. as a
plugin.

Well, so far I have been pretty wrong with all my release date
predictions so I will stay away from doing new ones.
I would say: not before September but before Christmas.

Try this:
http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-the-iphone-skin-for-squeezecenter/how-to-use-the-ipeng-application/general-usability/

To play an album directly from a Music Folder that would be "hold"
(hold the item for 1s). A gesture you should generally remember in iPeng
:-)
For a track: If your folder has sub-folders that would be "hold", too,
if you have a folder that's arranged like an album (with only tracks but
no subfolders in it) it should behave like an album in the albums view
in that you just have to tap a track.

Have you read through the page I linked?
I guess your top bar shows an "m", right?
Could you toggle it until it shows a ">" (not ">|") and try again?

Each song: That's exactly what I meant with "it depends on whether you
have subfolders".
SqueezeCenter doesn't have a command to play the contents of a folder,
you can only play a whole folder structure.
If your folder only contains tracks (no subfolders), it will play the
whole folder from the track you selected.

Little chance for digital streaming from iPhone.
You have full access to the database on the device, so it would be
technically possible to announce your library on the network and control
the iPhone/iTouch from SC with a plugin but then you have to use the
analog output.

So, yes, if someone writes that plugin I'd include some code in iPeng
and I would help specifying something (protocol, etc), but I'm
definitely not going to do the Perl part.
Any volunteers?

I didn't say it's very useful.
I could see one other thing that could be interesting but that's
definitely iPeng 1.4 at earliest, so plenty of time to think about it.

Thought about it but there's already so little space.
For albums there's the cover that has the function.
BTW, this really is only an issue if you are using more or less
un-sorted Music Folders, which I admit is not the strongest part of the
Interface.
If you use the Artists/Albums/Genres etc. menus you can pretty much
live without "hold", it's just a shortcut.

The next version will also have a short into for new users but I do
already know people usually don't follow that...
>
> I dunno, just a thought. Im extremely pleased with the program...

Thank you :-)
But as I said: I always like to improve.
Actually, some of the general UI scheme will change in the next version
- but the "hold" gesture will stay, although in a different and more
consistent role. I hope people get more used to it since iPhone now also
uses that (for cut & paste).

Context menu as a default for tracks/lowest level items: over my dead

That was the original point.
Apple doesn't give you access to the library. Would maybe break DRM.
I _know_ how to get it, though, but Apple tells me they won't let it
onto the App Store :-(
Would also be either lousy quality or a bandwidth hog and I don't know
whether iPhone would even be capable for that - the other idea would be
to use a docked hardware.

Yep.
So it's currently down to a somewhat obscure use case...

iPeng has an option for that (Settings->iPeng Settings->Prevent Sleep
Mode). It won't help on the "iPhone shuts off WiFi after 30min" issue
though.
There will be better solutions in 1.2, for once the 30min barrier will
no longer be one since Apple fixed a bug around this in 3.0

Err... Not iTunes.
The use case is to play songs that are on an iPhone or iPod touch
through another device with analog audio in while controlling the whole
thing through yet another device that communicates to a server with
SqueezeCenter on it.

It IS obscure.

No. I mean 30 min. No matter what you do. iPeng communicates quite a
bit back and forth and it does keep at least one connection open.

There is a flag to say you are a "WiFi" app and if that's set, it will
not be turned off. Yet in 2.x this meant you could not communicate
through cellular at all, it meant you REQUIRE WiFi.
3.0 fixes this so the next release will use the flag.

All interfaces.
In the Web Interface I get

Code:

That's for "New Albums" from the default menu list.

The code for iPeng (and the Controller) doesn't honor that setting.

There will be a lot of improvements around the use of Custom Browse in
the next version of iPeng, yet it's not completely set whether this will
be one of them.
You will probably NOT be able to swap Albums but for the other menus
it's at least thinkable.

Oh, now THAT works today.
Make sure you set the menus for the Controller, not the web interface
(in the settings, NOT on the controller itself). If you define home menu
entries for the Controller, they will show up on iPeng's home menu, too.
In the next version, they will also have icons.

Yes.
I'm not 100% sure, it may be that you have to set CustomBrowse's menu
position to be included in "Music Library", in that case it will also
show up in iPeng's home menu.
One thing you should take care of: iPeng's home menu may not have more
than 23 entries! (iPhone limitation).

Of course.
Touch the Cover Art on NowPlaying and you get an overlay with repeat,
shuffle (or e.g. love/ban for Last.fm) and the progress bar. If you have
TrackStat installed, this will also show the rating stars.

You see: most of it is indeed already there :-)

If SqueezeCenter runs on your computer: I believe yes. I'm doing this
quite a bit for testing except for the "connect receiver directly"
part.
You will have to set up a WiFi P2P network on your computer and joing
your iPhone/iTouch to this and you will need to use a crosslink cable to
connect your Receiver to the Computer. And you will probably have to set
IP addresses manually, but I'm not sure about that.

Also, don't ask me about Internet Radio on the receiver.

I do indeed get the full text but the view used by iPeng has a limited

I know :-(
Safari bug (obviously. must.never.crash). Don't have a workaround, yet.

I did file it. Doesn't help an awful lot. I will try to find a
workaround, I believe it has to do with some of the apple specific
stuff, most notably transitions.
Only the NowPlaying screen of the plugin is affected.

No. The only browser with which it _somehow_ works is Chrome, not even
Safari (on Mac or Win) supports Apple's own CSS extensions.

The main advantage of the App is that it's much, much faster and also a
bit more user friendly. You can also use SqueezeNetwork with the app.
Please note that the App does NOT work with SC 7.4 betas, those will
only be supported with the next version of iPeng which is planned to
come out in time for the final release of the 7.4 server.

Can you please write again what exactly the problem is, how it starts

Also, can you give a bit more detail about your setup (network, server

Also, is iPeng syncing the cache (do you see the blue "progress bar" on

This would have to be an option since there are good reasons to do it
as it is now, too. A lot of people have things like "blablabla1,
blablabla2,..." in their track names.
Landscape mode is plannend but all views have to support it before it
really works. As opposed to what Apple makes you believe, all their
default controllers disable landscape mode so you have to subclass them
all to make this work.

I agree that this would probably be the best solution but it's a bit
tricky. Yes, one day it will come, but this requires a lot of work and
tweaking and currently I'm perfectly happy if iPeng still runs as it is
(plus the NowPlaying changes already announced) when 7.4 comes out since
Logitech is really keeping me busy with all the things 7.4 is changing.

Hm. That doesn't sound good. I have to admit I didn't try 7.3.4 so far
and 7.4 beta definitely does NOT work with the current iPeng release.

One thing: Have you already moved a player to SC before you switch the
server in iPeng? That's currently a 2-step action, you switch players
between SC and SN using the "Globe" icon. And the player does have to be
connected to the SC once before you can do that.

That happens when you hold an item on the iPhone/iTouch start screen
("Springboard") for a second or so. While it jiggles, you can move the
icon around to rearrange them. If you press the "x", the App gets
uninstalled - this is no problem since you can always re-install it from

Have you checked for any of these issues, especially the "player
without name" issue?
http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-the-iphone-skin-for-squeezecenter/how-to-use-the-ipeng-application/known-issues/

With SC 7.3.3 iPeng 1.1.2 has been very stable. Yet as I said: no idea
about 7.3.4.

What I DON'T fully understand is, what you mean by "kick back to
settings page". Does iPeng crash? Or do you mean the iPeng settings
page. If it's the latter it may just be iPeng trying to launch on a page
that isn't there (because you've never been connected to SC before). In
this case it probably helps to move to another tab (say, "Artists"),
quit iPeng and restart.

I'll check.
Actually, your use case may be quite unique in that you used SN first
and then moved to SC, for most people it's the other way around.
Or it's the 3.0.1 update and a coincidence? iPhone/App updates often
break locally stored data, in this case the stored configuration. It's
not only an issue for iPeng. In that case the workaround is what you
did: uninstalling and re-installing the app.

Well, the long term idea is to make it scroll, another thing that would
help is landscape mode, both are planned (part of landscape mode is also
developed) yet all this is a bit difficult. Could you file a ticket or

And that's exactly the opposing argument: In iPeng 1.2 hold will always
bring up a context or info menu.
There will be a workaround: If you go into playlist edit mode, select
to play will be disabled so that's safer then plus you will always be
able to get the TrackInfo for the current track through a "hold" on the
big cover art.

No, you don't need a pc for iPeng.
There's two versions.:
The free plugin, which unfortunately doesn't work with iPhone 3.0 right
now. This can be installed in SC using the extension downloader. It's a
mixture of template

toolkit (a kind of perl for the browser), html, css and java script.
Then there's the commercial App Store app (8 Euro) which you install
directly on the iPod.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng plugin 0.5.4 for iPhone 3.0

2009-08-14 Thread pippin

For all those of you who still use the iPeng plugin, there's now an
updated version 0.5.4 available that will work with iPhone 3.0:

http://penguinlovesmusic.de/2009/08/15/plugin-again-ipeng-0-5-4-for-iphone-3-0/

It's currently only available for download but the repository is
updated, too, so it should show up on the Extension Downloader within a
day or so.

Note: This does NOT apply to the iPeng App Store App, that one always
worked fine with 3.0.

Well, there is indeed a limit, I believe it's 50 Track, 50 Albums,...
There is an option in SqueezeCenter where you can define whether SC
searches only from the start of a phrase or also within the phrase.
Could it be that?
Also, there's an issue in iPeng that it may drop the latest server
feedback in favor of earlier ones, but this should give you MORE
results, not LESS. An example would be that "Rol" would include "Rolf"
and "Rolling Stones" whereas "Roll" would only include "Rolling Stones".

Same as for the iPod app on your iPhone:
Tap "Shuffle to play the whole album shuffled.
Tap A track to play the whole album from that track
hold (tap and hold for 1s) a track and select "play" to play just the

Why don't you just use the WiFi MAC? Every iThingy has that.

One thing that would help ME a lot is if you could query the password
as a challenge (when the server requests it) plus probably remember it
(store it in the key ring). This would help a lot when you change
servers a lot (as I do).

Also: Is this SlimProto or stream.mp3?

Do you want to use SqueezeNetwork directly or do you have SqueezeCenter
installed on your Laptop? In the latter case it should work if you can
set up a wireless P2P-Network from the laptop, iPeng only needs to talk
to the laptop.
If you want to use SN directly, you also need to use your laptop as a
router since then iPeng needs internet access, too.
You do that through a feature called "Internet Connection Sharing" but
don't ask me how to do that, don't have a Windows at hand right now.

Could the server IP have changed? What do you see if you go to the

Playlists sometimes clearing is a known issue.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

Yes, that's the main point about the upcoming 1.2 release. The whole
player management is re-done from scratch:
scrolling works, different graphics, no more cryptic icons, volume
control for sync groups, all in there.

Umph.
Because that's a bug nobody else discovered so far :-)
You always get to the "TrackInfo" menu (this is why that icon is being
reset, this is a "SqueezePlay" menu.
You can switch to the "++" icon and then "hold" the "Add at end" item.
Yes, you have to know this (I tried it on the Controller to find out).
Could you file a ticket for this, needs fixing:

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

You have to add an exception to your browser to accept the SSL
certificate of the site. Noting bad to happen, you are not adding any
real personal data you could lose.

No guarantees given that I don't forget the bug without a ticket.

On the usage of the current menu:
The TrackInfo menu is supposed to only come up on "i" mode, that it
comes up on "+" and ">|" is a bug.
For the SqueezePlay menus (inverted "mode" icons) the logic is that ">"
stands for the "play" button on the controller, "+" for the "+" button
and "++" for holding the plus button.
Hard to do a better logic since iPeng doesn't really know the
functionality of these butttons (for example they'll change in 7.4
compared to 7.3).
Now "++" in the context of playing things often means "add next",
should, btw, also work on the "play" menu item.

As I said, this is supposed to be different...

Sometimes iPeng crash then I open the Favorites menu. About 2 out of 3

Using latest iPeng from appstore on iPod Touch 2G, OS 3.0.

Hm. Will investigate. Anything you can reproduce?

In Extras->Sleep Mode there is only a option to sleep after
playlist\song ends (I think, or do I missunderstand how it works).
On the Boom remote I can set it to sleep even if I play a radiostation
or a random mix.

That should not be. Which server version do you use?
I see (with a boom, SC 7.3.3):
15 minutes
30 minutes
...
90 minutes

I also get "Sleep at end of song" when something is playing.
BTW, it's "Extras->Player Sleep".

No, unfortunately iPeng can NOT set up the receiver.
Have a look at the FAQ on the iPeng web site
(help.penguinlovesmusic.de) for a link to Net::UDAP (or search this
forum for it), it's a 3rd party tool you can use for this.

No, it doesn't stream to the iPhone.
There's some limited capability in the (free) iPeng PLUGIN (version
0.5.4 is available for download through SqueezeCenter's Extension
Downloader). That's essentially an iPhone based skin for SC (for
Safari), learn more about it's playback capabilities here:

Actually I don't know :-)
The question here is: does SqueezeCenter support multiple artworks per
track and I believe the answer is "no" (I have see discussions around
this on the "New Schema" threads).
IF that should be supported, I believe you should be able to see this
through the TrackInfo menu, where there is an "Show Artwork" menu item
and it is already named "Show Artworks" (at least in German, have to
look up the English version).
This will be reachable from NowPlaying in the next release.

Not yet 100% sure.
It's almost done, I believe functionality wise it will go into the last
beta round this week and then I'll check whether I'll also add some of
the enhancement requests from open tickets.

Apart from that I try to get as close as possible to the official 7.4
release since I still even today see changes that break things in the
current implementation on a weekly basis. It simply doesn't make sense
to release anything for a server that still has that kind of a change
rate, it would mean if I release it today it probably still won't work
with a then-current 7.4 build once it reaches the App Store.
It's been a while since I had issues that were fatal (like crashing the
app) but having features unavailable hurts as well.

My biggest concern right now is that if the 7.4 implementation stays as
it is right now you will not be able to switch a player from SC to SN
with iPeng, you'd have to do that on the player
(https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13826). I hope there will
be a change that allows this, but this, for example, would have to be
something to implement, at least as long as it's different from 7.3's
solution.

It's not "now Squeezecenter", the touch does run a SC instance, albeit

If you keep it on, the volume keys will also work while the screen

There is a flag for apps (not configurable, to be set at compile time)
but pre-FW 3.0 setting this flag completely blocked access to the

Not really.
The good thing is you can start playback from the app itself because it
has some basic library browsing.
The downside is that I could not make it play with security on so it's
not really an option for remote use.

I have no idea :-)
Depends on what the "support" does. This looks a bit like they want to
run SC as a server on the device, which would be a kind of TinySC. You
should be able to control that through iPeng, then.
But it's all speculation, I don't really have any info on this.

You are right, this fixed it.
What do you mean about iPeng? iPeng works with security, csrf doesn't
have any effect there. But that's maybe because it doesn't use the
json/rpc interface.

No, they won't.
There's an open ticket for a "Screen Saver" interface for iPeng 1.2.5
or 1.3 that should work like that. Dimming is not on the list of ideas,
yet, so you might want to add to the ticket:

I just started Android...

Yes. But Palm didn't start selling the DEVICE over here and even though
they are said to have a GSM/3G version I believe it's not being sold,
yet :-)

I'll have a look at it, but there are other reasons than plain volume
that make Android attractive, it's simply a pretty nice platform with
quite a bit of potential.
