I'm looking for the widest variety Tosco in 25.4, as it says in the title.
Riv is sold out until August, but if you've got a set, I'd love to hear

[RBW] FS: Clem L Complete (64cm)

2021-01-28 Thread Reid Echols
Hello Bunch,

Thanks to the purchase of a new Gus and the recent Albatrizing of my
Atlantis, I am thinking it may be time to let the Clem go to someone who
will ride it more often. It is listed as a complete, built as a 1x10
cruiser with some nice upgrades (fillet-brazed Bosco Bullmoose bars,
Velocity Cliffhanger wheels, tubeless Compass tires, Brooks saddle, NOS
Gipiemme seat post, etc.). It’s a big bike: under 6’ 2” or so probably need
not apply. This bike is a true magic carpet; rides smoothly and
surprisingly spry-ly, built to last a lifetime.

I'm asking essentially the retail price for a new Clem complete locally
($1650), which seems fair given the upgrades. However, for the RBW folks
I'm willing to go a bit lower or entertain offers. Shipping will, as you
might expect, be expensive, but I'd split professional pack and ship for
the right buyer (and to support my LBS).

Photos here
<https://drive.google.com/open?id=1spVUCOUu-EhECsrlKM8OSOy7ewD2KJFo>, but
please let me know if this wonky new interface doesn't work. If you are
unable to DM, my email is just my first and last name, all lower case, at
gmail.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Tubing between Clem H, Atlantis

2020-08-16 Thread Reid Echols
Hey Jason, I had a similar problem on the higher end of the size spectrum: 65 H
was too big for comfort offroad, 59 too small. My solution (and on I think that
would work well for you, if you ever want a rough stuff bike) was the Clem L in
“my” size (64). All the standover, but enough front center to ride confidently
offroad (I think all things being equal that a larger bike nearly always rides
better offroad for that reason). My latest Clem nails it in the fun/fast/sturdy
pie chart.

2020-04-08 Thread Reid Echols
When I swapped the stock tires on my old Clem for thunder burts I think I lost
a good 3-4 pounds, and in a place that really affected the way it feels while
riding. Cheapest/easiest place to lose weight (besides the “engine”) is getting
a lighter set of tires, and maybe, as has been suggested, wheels.

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and A Homer Hilsen?

2020-03-26 Thread Reid Echols
I don't know about each other, but they'll both certainly draw a lot of
compliments from bystanders (even from 6+ feet away)!

In seriousness, yes; provided they're set up differently enough from each
other. Cheviot as a commuter with racks and swept-back bars, Homer with
drops, for example. Rivs have the bug/feature of being versatile enough
that you can make them very similar to each other, or very different.

If you want more "spread", sub one of those for a Riv that'll take 50+mm
tires and cantilevers.

My thoughts from quarantine,

She loves it! Very quickly noted the lively feel and smoother turning than her
previous bike, a very solid and dependable Trek mixte with disc brakes. It’s
truly a stunning bike to look at, and in wonderful shape despite its relative

We’re keeping the triple while she tests out different ratios, then will likely
go down to a single ring and bashguard at some point.

Now the only problem is that I’m jealous! Any 64cm Gloriae or Wilburies out

It’s the Goldilocks dilemma, Mark :)

I could set up most of them to be most things, but I like bikes set up for
specific things. If Homer is fast enough, it’ll be a drop bar quick bike that
fits me a bit better than the Ram. If not, and it clears my preferred tire,
it’ll take the Sam’s commuting gig. Not the worst problem to have to solve...

Hi Mark,

We will indeed, if it ends up being too large. I had the seller send me a
photo, though, and it looks like he was measuring to the lug point for the
67cm number. Center to center is spot on at 65, to my eyes. At the price I

see.

The trick now will be to decide whether I sell the Sam or my Ram if the AHH

Not designed for it, but I for one (and others I know of) have run 650b on 26”
frames with no real problems, other than higher bb/slightly reduced tire
clearance. Even the cheapest Shimano b brakes have plenty of vertical
adjustment to make such a thing happen. So, not “authorised” but likely
possible to make that conversion (as opposed to the other direction, 700c to
650b, which is much more difficult with a canti frame).

[RBW] New vs. old Homer geometry, ride characteristics

2019-11-15 Thread Reid Echols
If you want fast road riding, the Homer isn’t going to ride much different than
the Sam (in my experience with bigger sizes of both models, anyway). The
Rambouillet I have feels quite a bit more lively than my Waterford Homer did,
set up with the same wheelset and 38mm compass tires.

Honestly long stays on my Appaloosa don’t seem to affect the ride nearly as
much as which tires I choose to run. It even feels a bit springier than my Sam
did (perhaps due to the length and my 215lbs or so of rider weight).

2019-09-28 Thread Reid Echols
I've traveled all over the UK with a bike and never even had a bag stolen
off of it. Just be smart locking it up, and maybe grab a cable lock or two
for wheels and accessories. Honestly if you're not in London (where
pro-thieves operate), you're probably fine. Would be a shame to mess with
the beauty of a Homer.

If you're concerned, you could always get a (quite cheap) bike insurance
policy. Annoying perhaps to have to order another bike, but they do cover
replacement value and sometimes even renting while you wait for a
replacement to arrive.

I've also got to get a seatpost binder fixed on that Hanford, so if you
wanted to buy it back and just leave the paint marked up for the time
you're in the UK that would be great camouflage I'd imagine ;)

[RBW] Reduced market for used older bikes?

2019-08-31 Thread Reid Echols
Seems to vary a lot by market. In Austin I can do pretty well with a functional
bike, but it’s a college town. Figure almost any bike that works and has a
decent story to tell will fetch at least ~$180 around here.

2019-07-17 Thread Reid Echols
Hi folks,

This one’s a catch and release for me, I’ve decided to keep my Appaloosa
instead. It’s a mint condition (I can’t find a scratch on it) complete, stock
from Riv with Bosco bars. I’ll include a brown Brooks B17 saddle and grip king
pedals (my only aftermarket additions) in asking price. $1100 plus packing and
shipping at the LBS, or $1000 without saddle/pedals. Bike is located in Austin,
TX.

Pictures to come when I get a bit more time.

Thanks,

Hi Matthew,

If you came to coffee outside (follow @coffeoutsideatx on instagram for
times and places) on a Friday morning, odds are you'd meet someone with a
59 Clem. I'm often there with my 62 Appaloosa, and there are a few other
Riv riders who attend fairly regularly. Having ridden the 59 Clem here in
town (and owned a 65 Clem for a while), I'd imagine the fit will be just
fine. I'm 6 ' 4" and the 65 Clem was on the big side.

Hope to see you out there sometime,

https://bikeinsights.com/ is a one-stop shop for geometry comparisons among a
staggering range of bikes and makers, including Riv. I’m not affiliated, but I
do occasionally ride with one of the founders (Dan/@hobocross). It’s saved me
from making several impulse purchases, but encouraged several others, so use at

[RBW] Re: 3x9 brifter recommendations? (Sam Hillborne 62cm, Tektro r559, noodles)

2019-04-15 Thread Reid Echols
Were the bars on his last bike that long of a reach (those look like
Noodles or similar). In my experience, brifters work much better/are much
more comfortable with shorter reach modern bars. The Soma HWY One (and VO
clone of it) is one of the only games in town for that in 26.0 and silver.

[RBW] WTB: 61cm Roadini frameset

2019-04-03 Thread Reid Echols
Hi folks,

Just curious if anyone has a tall Roadini they're looking to move on, as
I'm currently short a roadish bike in the stable. Funds are a bit tight
with a recent move, but I thought I'd see what's out there (and see if any
opportunities for mutually interesting trades might be afoot--the parts bin
runneth over).

If you have something in the same spirit (and are in the 96+ PBH range),
let me know--if nothing else it's fun to look!

Thanks,

[RBW] SKS fenders secu clips

2019-02-27 Thread Reid
Hello all,

I have SKS fenders on a Clementine and the front fender has the plastic
security clips holding the struts to the fork braze on. A branch jumped up
between the tire and struts and the clip did just the right thing. However,
now I can't get the clips to snap on to the struts again. How do I apply
enough pressure on the clips to make them hold on the struts? Thanks for
any ideas.

[RBW] FS: 65cm Waterford Homer

2019-02-15 Thread Reid Echols
Hi folks,

The move is close upon us, and I need to thin the herd a bit. This
almost-shamefully-clean Homer is likely looking to be, er, re-Homed, so to
speak.

It’s an absolutely gorgeous bike, with a classic Riv ride quality and lugs for
days. I’ve got it kittednout to the nines, with Paul racer brakes, H plus Son
TB14 polished rims, dura ace shifters, Sugino cranks, etc. It’s nigh-perfect,
if I may say so. Photos available here, and more on request:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BrQ_X_iF-Ww/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=1miw0zv2c07bu

I’d be happy to sell the frameset for $1000 plus bikeflights shipping. The
complete has some parts I’d like to maybe keep, but I would let it all go at
around $2000 plus professional packing/shipping. So, get a complete MUSA Riv
for less than a new frameset.

Thanks for your interest, happy to answer any questions.

Just a quick note to say that Eric was a model seller, great to work with
and meticulous in his packing of the frame. Simon at Hanford was also very
helpful, identifying the tubing and dropouts for me, along with a couple
more odds and ends.

This is a real beauty of a frame; can't wait to get it built up. I'll try
to post some photos when it's all ready to go.

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa/Sam

2018-12-04 Thread Reid Echols
Hi Dave,

I've had both, and am around your height. I rode both for fitness, camping,
and fun, and you really can't go wrong. My 64cm Sam might have been a bit
"sportier" but that was likely as much a factor of the drop bars and light
wheels as anything. My 62 Appaloosa is a touch more versatile, and
excellent with a load in the back or front in ways the Sam was not (past a
certain weight, say 5 lbs or so of cargo). I'd go with whichever you can
find that fits and is a decent deal (or that has a color you like). The
Appaloosa is my pick on any kind of mixed surface/gravel, as the long stays
really make it stable and fun when the dirt gets a little loose. I sold the
Sam, but got a Hilsen, which is that bit sportier than either of them, so
you might consider that, too if your major need is a road-ish bike.
