This map seems to correspond to the reported damages by local media,
although many areas are still inaccessible.
Reports from local media is slowly coming in and it is not very good
news. Some reports estimates the death toll to exceed 10K.

While Haiyan/Yolanda is now out of the Philippines, there is new low
pressure brewing in the Pacific [0] which could exacerbate the
situation in many affected areas.

Right now, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) the
major government agency organizing the relief is using OSM as the
basemap for its Disaster Situation Map [1].

Please continue working on the current tasks, we will create new tasks
as we get additional request from local responders.
IMO, priorities should focus on:
- access - roads and bridges
- presence of settlements - landuse=residential should be sufficient

PS. I went to Tacloban just this year to talk about FOSS4G and OSM for
DRR. My visit in some ways, sparked the interest of local NGOs, GIS
users and government employees to start contributing to OSM. These
are the areas you may have noticed to be well-mapped road-wise. Some
of these mappers live in the mostly devastated areas. I tried to
contact a few but haven't heard from any of them since the Yolanda
made landfall in Tacloban. Still hoping they are safe.

Hi Jakub,

Unfortunately, there is still no available satellite imagery after the
disaster. Some people are working on this right now.

What OSM mappers are doing right now is mapping using the existing
pre-disaster imagery on the following task pages:

[talk-ph] Using aerial and ground photos for mapping

2013-11-10 Per discussione Jean-Guilhem Cailton
Hi,

While post-disaster satellite imagery is not available yet, it is
possible to use photos or videos, taken from the air or the ground, to
get a better idea of what is there.

A collection of geolocated photos or videos found on social media
(focused on damages and aid deployment) has been started here:

https://haiyan.crowdmap.com/

Some of them might be useful for mapping.

In this process, it is also quite possible that you find that some
locations could be improved. In this case, please add a comment to the
report, so that admins can take this into account.

And of course the photo/video crowdmap is open for contributions from
all (but please avoid duplicates).

Best wishes,

Jean-Guilhem

[OSM-talk-be] AGIV CRAB import

2013-11-10 Per discussione Kurt Roeckx
Hi,

I've been looking at creating my own tools for the CRAB data.
I've made some software to import the files provided by AGIV
into a postgresql database. You can find it here:
https://github.com/kroeckx/crab-tools

To create the same .csv files as Ben generates I suggest you
use the following query:
SELECT
DISTINCT ON (point)
postcode, municipality_name, street_name, house_number_label,
ST_Y(ST_Transform(point, 4326)), ST_X(ST_Transform(point, 4326))
FROM crab.address_position
WHERE postcode = ?
ORDER BY point;

This should give you more addresses and only the valid addresses,
and in most cases it should now end up on the building. It should
also have grouped all the different numbers belonging to the same
building into 1 node.

I'm not sure how the data on http://addr.openstreetmap.fr/vlaanderen
is generated exactly. But I'm going to look into improving
things.

[OSM-talk-be] Volgende hangout / Next hangout

2013-11-10 Per discussione Marc Gemis
Voorstel: 22/11

Mogelijke topics:

1) Wandelnetwerken.
umap, openlinkmap, e.d.) ?
Toepassingen zoals de kiosks in Helsinki ?

Andere ideeën zijn ook welkom.

Yes, some of the OS OpenData boundaries have been added to OSM. But
they are very incomplete/inconsistent, and often accidentally edited
or broken etc. And probably out of date if the official boundaries
have changed anywhere. So generally not as useful or reliable as
 just using the OS OpenData.

This will not be fixed by seperating out the boundarys.

If MySociety is interested in up to date, complete and non broken
boundarys it could sponsor a simple monitoring tool for boundaries.
As soon as there is a hint something is broken there are hundrets
of mappers interested in fixing.

Re: [OSM-talk] Admin boundaries - data consumers

In my opinion this is an example where OSM data is broken and should be
 fixed.

 Andrew

In India the law requires that the external boundaries of the country
include parts of Kashmir that is now under control of foreign countries.
This regularly causes issues when OSM is demoed publicly at institutes or
to government officials. Also the startup community is apprehensive of
using openstreetmap because of this issue.

In this case, its the law that is broken, but adapting OSM to be able to
handle such political challenges is more feasible than fixing the law.

Google, Bing and other map providers display a different set of boundaries
based on the laws of the user's country. But for OSM, it would probably a
very simple solution if we have a lowzoom tileset which don't have any
international borders. Would that be a good idea?

If you need wrong (according to the facts) data for legal reasons, then
patch the osm dataset with the official boundaries here and render
tiles from it.
Rendering tiles isn't that difficult, at least if we're talking about
demoing and so on.
Use osm, replace the indian boundary by the legal version and render
tiles from it. If you still keep the original stylesheet you would need
only to replace the affected tiles there by your own (if it's feasible
for the demo to use the original osm tiles - according to the tile usage
policy).

I don't think this is a problem with OSM in particular, but with every
correct dataset not originating in india.

Re: [OSM-talk] Admin borders/separate database

2013-11-10 Per discussione nicholas . g . lawrence

If we agree that borders are a problem, then what is the best solution?

Do you mean borders are a problem in general, or are there specific
problems related to specific borders like those mentioned in this thread?

I'd argue that the GIS community has already decided that layers
are the solution. QGIS, open source gis software, already handles
layers much like ESRI. JOSM even handles layers.

 IMHO osm is post-layers ;-)

This is quite a fascinating statement. Is there any content on the web
describing the concept of a post-layer GIS in more detail?

Re: [Talk-br] Áreas protegidas

Oi Augusto

passa bem no meio do parque.

abraço

Gerald

 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/3317528

 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/18808320

  https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:boundary%3Dprotected_area ).

citada a fonte (vide ABNT).

 SP/MS/PR
 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/3317528

Para referência, esses são os chageset:

 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/18808320

  https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:boundary%

 a tag
boundary=protected_area (e isso parece ser um bug aberto há
 anos).

Citar nessa página significa copiar a mensagem deles pra lista import,

[Talk-br] Fwd: [OpenStreetMap] #1447: Render surface=unpaved differently from surface=paved

Ou seja, me

permette di sapere cosa c'è on the ground.

 Analisi informatica :

 ground)

 Conclusione:
Continuiamo a mappare su name:* i valori nelle singole lingue e su name
c'è on the ground.

http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/18803872
http://goo.gl/maps/56DwY

In Josm è sufficiente aggiungerle. Preferenze-WMS, poi scegli le PCN

Niente :-)

c'è on the ground.

Analisi informatica :

ground)

Conclusione:
Continuiamo a mappare su name:* i valori nelle singole lingue e su name quello
the ground.

etiqueta building:levels vale 10 y 11 respectivamente.

Geodaten handelt, bzw. ob selber erfundene Tags dafür jemals irgendwer

tags addr:housenumber ferait bien l'affaire.

[OSM-talk-fr] Ubuntu Party Paris - Atelier OSM

2013-11-10 Per discussione Jean-Marc Gailis
Bonsoir,

「highway=turning_circle」が大きくなってしまったので、zoom=15 では

[Talk-us] Railroads and Railroads (Historic)

2013-11-10 Per discussione nathan proudfoot
Hello got some questions about Railroads,
I have a passion for the preservation of railroads and the maps surrounding
them. I both update current map data with a line per each track. Track is
in most cases two rails attached by a sleeper or tie. I have over 10,000
edits over on GMM and under 4,000 with OSM.

I am mostly coming to ask about historic railroads and how to map them.
In my area we have lots of rail trails, these trails mostly have been
mapped by
bicycle=yes
foot=yes
highway=cycleway
horse=yes
name=John Wayne Pioneer Trail
note=railway=abandoned indicates a rail-trail
old_railway_operator=Milwaukee
railway=abandoned
Ect..

Is this the way that we should be mapping these as there are historic
attributes.
For instance we could add.
historic=ruins
ruins=railroad

or we could remove railway=abandoned
but in this case the railroad is rail banked and could be brought out of
abandoned status.

We have other routes in the state that are not rail banked and are historic
and are not seen as abandoned.

We probably need a value such as railway=inactive for routes that are
not in use, but still have the rails in place. The only problem is
that, if someone erroneously tags an active but little-used route as
inactive, this could lead to an accident if someone went hiking or
rail-biking on the route.

As listed by James we have, railway=disused
I would not encourage hiking or rail-biking any of these routes as they
are in question by the tag of disused and most of these are still going to
