From: john snodgrass [mailto:jcs...@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 01, 2012 10:15 AM To: transverse myelitis Subject: [TMIC] February Birthday(and a little extra) Happy Birthday! February was named after the Latin term februum, which means purification, via the purification ritual Februa held on February 15 (full moon) in the old lunar Roman calendar. January and February were the last two months to be added to the Roman calendar, since the Romans originally considered winter a monthless period. They were added by Numa Pompilius about 713 BC. February remained the last month of the calendar year until the time of the decemvirs (c. 450 BC), when it became the second month. At certain intervals February was truncated to 23 or 24 days; and a 27-day intercalary month, Intercalaris, was inserted immediately after February to realign the year with the seasons. Under the reforms that instituted the Julian calendar, Intercalaris was abolished, leap years occurred regularly every fourth year, and in leap years February gained a 29th day. Thereafter, it remained the second month of the calendar year, meaning the order that months are displayed (January, February, March, ..., December) within a year-at-a-glance calendar. Even during the Middle Ages, when the numbered Anno Domini year began on March 25 or December 25, the second month was February whenever all twelve months were displayed in order. The Gregorian calendar reforms made slight changes to the system for determining which years were leap years and thus contained a 29-day February. Historical names for February include the Old English terms Solmonath (mud month) and Kale-monath (named for cabbage) as well as Charlemagne's designation Hornung. In Finnish, the month is called helmikuu, meaning month of the pearl; when snow melts on tree branches, it forms droplets, and as these freeze again, they are like pearls of ice. In Polish and Ukrainian, respectively, the month is called luty or лютий, meaning the month of ice or hard frost.

I was dx’d with TM in April of 2006, spent a month in a re-hab facility, and ~two years in and out of physical occupational therapy. Then in 2008 2009, I had two surgeries on my right wrist/arm to improve my hand function. Early this year I started wearing a leg brace (when I’m out walking a lot – grocery or mall shopping, etc.). After seeing a podiatrist for an unrelated issue, he became interested in my ‘condition’ and other problems I have as a result of TM – weak left leg (especially the knee), pronated arch/ankle and drop-foot. He recommended a new, light-weight carbon-fibre brace (made by Trulife in the U.K. http://trulife.com/all-products/orthotics/ankle-foot-orthoses/carbon-fibre-afo/matrix ) for my leg that has worked very well. It gives me the stability I need without being too heavy. I don’t wear it around the house, but when I go out, it helps tremendously. I looked up Brown-Sequard Syndrome. The symptoms of it read very much like TM so I’m curious… you said you have probable MS, but were dx’d with TM this year. Is that a correction to the initial BSS diagnosis of 20 years ago or in addition to it? And the Cranial Sacral Therapy… I’m very interested in it. I had many years of chiropractic treatments during my teens 20’s due to severe headaches and backaches caused by my Scoliosis, but finally stopped going because I had my spine fused (and partially because of the cost). Since then, I’ve considered going back, but the thought of someone else touching and manipulating my body just creeps me out… I have extreme sensitivity to synthetic fabrics which make my skin feel like it’s crawling and being hugged by others can sometimes be painful. I tried acupuncture a couple years ago, but didn’t see (or feel) any improvement in my condition. You mention Cranial Sacral Therapy helped you more than anything else. In what way – other than the obvious feeling of well-being – did it help you? With pain or with function? Also, do you use pain meds? If so, what do you use and in what dosage? Sorry if I sound nosy, but I’m always interested in alternative therapies. Since we all seem to react differently, you never know what might work for you. I told Dave I would chek into it and let him know what I found out. It was good to see so many people post on that subject. There were names that I hadn't seen on TMIC for a long time. RE: [TMIC] OT - this is scary
I have been following this very closely actually; it's a good distraction from my pending divorce. I expect things to come to a cross roads somewhere in the next 2 weeks. Gold is already at an all-time high whilst the value of the almighty dollar starts to fall. The US dollar, being gold-weighted, depends heavily on the demand and supply of gold...much of which they control through reserves held since they emerged as the only superpower left. If the gold price stays anywhere between $1550 and $1575 US, a lot of interesting things can happen. First things first, we'll probably see a new superpower emerge from the east, possibly one of the so-called poorer countries that has been pushed into production because of cheaper labour costs. Also, we might see the emergence of a new superpower, probably one whose currency isn't gold-weighted; copper isn't a bad choice here. All in all, it's going to get a bit tricky to really predict the economic climate right now because the decision made on Capitol Hill will ultimately affect the entire world and as such Economists are asked to forsee who shall survive. We here in Holland has to deal with cit backs on social security, healthcare and higher taxes. Not that we like it, but those were nessary. Not that we agreed to all the choises, but one way or the other, you have to make them. I've been through hell since January 1st this year with my complications with TM. I started having really bad spasms then and I just thought they were normal, but here was our little friend TM acting up again through an infection I managed to pick up in Brazil. I was treated and got better and my wife and I were relocated to the Caribbean, where we are from, by her company just after that. We moved and things settled nicely for a while, but with TM a while is all you have. I got another attack. I've been hospitalised on 7 separate occasions since then just to deal with pain, because sadly neurology is not a practised science in the caribbean. My wife endured all the while at my side. At least she did for a while. She finally got fed up of it all, seeing me spasm out of control in loads of pain must have been hard. She left me in mid April and I have been trying to cope since, but it's really hard. I love my wife and hate that I put her through so much, but I never thought she would have left. We haven't spoken in a month now and I have medical bills piling up and it's getting scary now. I just need to catch a break. It's more challenging now than when I was first hit by TM, because for the first time in my life I'm truly alone. I know my faith is being tested; I wish I knew what God wanted from me. RE: [TMIC] visit to Dr
Same story here, but this it was at my dentist's office. The dental assistant needed an update on my medical history and I asked, how long do you have? By the time I was through she was in tears. I felt really bad for her after, but it didn't end there. I had to list all the meds I'm on.spell the names of each drug then say what I take them for. By the time my dentist saw me, she was only too happy to say, well on a good note, you have really nice teeth! lol! Thank God I can still smile about our little friend called the TM monster. [TMIC] 2 year Anniversary
Hey guys, haven't been around lately, but I've read every single post over the last few months though. I just realised that a lot of us celebrate our TM anniversary this month. For me it is 2 years. In that short time I realised what I have become and how much I still have to live for. I am a walker so I guess I am really lucky that I got off with just the pain we all experience and the horrible days we endure. I try to live my life like I did before regardless though. I still Skydive, scubadive, go-cart, drink lots of wine and enjoy a good cigar (if it's available). I have decided that regardless of what I do, I am always going to be in pain and it's not going to get better, so while I'm able to find 40% mobility in my right leg,I'm going to abuse it! My wife is an incredible woman who totally supports my stupidity and my total disregard for a conventional handicapped lifestyle, so I get away with it I guess. All in all, I want to wish you guys out there a great day and a wonderful life with your loved onesremember we are all in this thing together and without eachother, we'll all be misunderstood. Regards, Jeron
