Re: [TMIC] swelling in foot and ankle
Mom Maw in NC I too experience swelling in foot and ankle but only after I've been on it all day. The swelling goes down when I elevate my feet during the day and when I get upin the morning. I think this is something you need to check out with your doctor. This could be totally unrelated to TM. Perhaps you are retaining water for other reasons. Keep us informed as to what you find out as this may help others here too. Kevin, I would imagine that the possibility of injury to the joints, tendons, ligaments and muscle are the concern. I mean if your peddling and don't realize that you are straining or bindinga muscle or tendon ect... then you could do serious damage without even knowing it. I just have to find the old bikes. I am going to look at yard sales ect... He is willing to build it just for the cost of the materialsparts. RE: [TMIC] Swelling legs
During my rehab, the bike was one that I was always put on for at least 15 min. a day but I think that it was to build strength. However, if you remember Channey and the reporter (David ?) who died due to blood clots after remaining inactive after hours of sitting and not stretching the leg, the leg movement should increase circuilation. Does this sound reasonable? This apparatus cost around $100.00 You sit on a chair and pedal along with the electric motor. I used one years ago after knee surgery for passive muscle stimulation. So what do you think? Larry in Oklahoma who only has three puppies left. Live Search Maps find all the local information you need, right when you need it.

TM is not a disease, butrather a syndrome with resulting residuals. Swelling can be caused by a number of things, for ex.: non-mobility or medications. When did you get TM? Re: [TMIC] swelling
I've had swelling in my feet/legs for years. My left legs has more than the right because my left side has more neurological effects: Left foot drop Left pain 4 times worse than right left has less ability to know where fingers, foot, arm is located. Diuretics don't really help, just screws up my electrolytes. F
Re: [TMIC] swelling
my hypothesis is that the nerves don't work as well to control the flow of blood and other fluids in and out of my legs. Homework: Try lying down with your feet and lower legs above your head- two pillows under your legs, none under your head, remain in this position for two hours (watch TV). Now check your swelling. Has it changed??? F
RE: [TMIC] swelling
Yes, I do get swelling in my bad foot. My Physical Therapist says it's from the spinal column nerve damage. I thought it was from wearing this AFO brace on that leg/foot all day. Re: [TMIC] swelling
From middle of the right calf down the veins cannot contract so the valves in them cannot close so the blood does not circulate well so the leg is turgid with fluids and wounds do not heal. The left leg is normal. This has been corrected by compression stockings. In addition, I am on two diuretics, Lasix (furosemide) and Aldactone (spironolactone). Alton
Re: [TMIC] swelling
I have bad swelling in my left leg and I have had this going on for the last year or so. Last October my PCP sent me for a sonogram and I had blood clots all up and down my left leg. They put me on blood thinners and now the blood clots are all gone. I had a sonogram a week ago and it was all clear with no clotting present. My leg is still swollen however and my PCP has now put me on a diuretic. I have been on the diuretic for two weeks and the swelling is still present. It may be slightly better. I think I am going back to the doctor. My doctor said it was a side-effect from some of the medication I'm taking, but I don't believe it as it's been a problem off and on since I got TM and before I was on this medication. I'm stumped and the doctors don't seem to know anything about it. - Roger - Original Message - From: dennis rabalais To: tmic Sent: Thursday, July 06, 2006 3:57 PM Subject: [TMIC] swelling question to all t.m. er's. do you all have problems with swelling at the feet or ankles? i have had one foot to swell for 2 months. is this part of the disease?
Re: [TMIC] Swelling in knees and NSAIDS
WOW Thanks so much for sending this. I told my late rheumatologist I had problems with NSAIDS. He said, NO, WAY and basically laughed at me. I hope he has become more educated by now. The following is paraphrased: Q: When I took NSAIDS on two occasions I experienced so much joint swelling that I had to have my knees drained. My rheumatologist said NSAIDS restrict blood flow through my kidneys. Can you explain? A: NSAIDS like aspirin, ibuprofen ( Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), can restrict blood flow through the kidneys. However, when this happens you would typically have fluid retention throughout the body; swelling might occur in just the lower extremities, such as the ankles due to gravity. Patients may also experience weight gain and increased blood pressure. I suspect the localized swelling you experienced in your knees was not caused by an effect on your kidneys. Rather, it may have occurred as a result of your immune system reacting to the presence of aspirin and ibuprofen. While some people have a systemic allergic reaction to aspirin and NSAIDS, resulting in hives or difficulty breathing, it is possible for a more localized reaction to occur, which could have been the case for you. Given your history of intolerance, avoid using any of these drugs in the future. My appointment was to beg for help with pain. I quit taking the antidepressant Elavil a month ago due to food cravings and weight gain and wanted to discuss Cymbalta or Effexor for both depression and pain relief. (I'm going to give Effexor a try.) My neuropathy pain increased as the Elavil wore off: then I started taking Aleve along with Neurontin and Baclofen. My doctor agreed with this article. He said NSAIDS can cause swelling in some people and that swelling might be partially responsible for the increase in pain. He suggested that I stay away from NSAIDS and use Tylenol (acetaminophen) instead. I hope stumbling across this article helps me and others with water retention problems. (Heat and humidity move over and share the bench with NSAIDS.)
