Thorsten, I updated the Lubuntu spec with modified content from Xubuntu. I think this is a really interesting idea and that if you take the time to explore a little what values the video already has you could make it so much more. Now that the tool has been mastered, the exploration can commence! Do you think that the video is more about a tune like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4FaGacwtd4 - that it is how I see it: light, dynamic, fun, friendly, happy! It moves with bounce and energy - Ubuntu is clever enough that it doesn't have to take itself too seriously. The pictograms have some of that: they are constrained within a circle, they are clever but they are approachable. The pictograms you have explored for the Artwork logo reflect that work - is there something you could borrow from that? What do you think about writing a blog post about how to use OpenShot? Perhaps we could work on a mood board for the video together and then you could include that in the blog post by way of setting out a challenge for people? [ubuntu-art] Managing Criticism
Without a doubt Artwork and criticism are like oil and vintager. Without critique there is no opportunity for improvement; too much criticism kills creativity. It may sound like a no win situation, but it's not. The secret is to acknowledge the effort even if you disagree with the result. From the mentor's perspective this works as it affirms regardless of the result, it took time and energy to create it. Acknowledging this first frames the rest. Phrasing comments favorably by stating what you liked will make comments for improvement more palatable. Making reference of an example is a great learning opportunity. From the contributor's perspective this works as it affirms the fact it took time and energy to critique and comment on your work. Accept this as a positive even if the words are not what you were hoping to hear. Accept the fact the author is simply offering their point of view based on the information available. Why is this important? Posting submissions on this team should be viewed as an opportunity and the success of the team is dependent on participation. Do not be afraid to contribute because your efforts may not be received favorably. There is no better place. When asked, please critique another members effort as I consider mentoring equally important. [ubuntu-art] Edubuntu Spec - Take Two
Thorsten, Jonathan, All: The following is my attempt at the Edubuntu spec. :-) Introduction Edubuntu desires to enhance Ubuntu with the best open source educational software available and to provide a solution which is easy to install and maintain. The current wallpaper is two (2) releases old and is in need of something fresh and new. The successful candidate may be used to inspire the remaining Edubuntu branding. Roles * Students * Teachers Desired message to Students Edubuntu is: * Fun * Empowering * Important * Open * A valuable experience Metaphors and associations: * Games * Exploration * Pencil * Water colors * Space * Energy Desired message to Teachers Edubuntu is: * Stable, reliable * Secure * Free of charge * Open the mind to new ideas * Inspire and motivate * Improve academic performance * Improve personal growth * Satisfy the need for a sophisticated and rewarding learning experience Metaphors and associations: * Classroom * Books * Chalkboard * Science * Poem * Music * Math * Teaching * Learning * Community Palette The Edubuntu palette is bold and rich and the community wishes to continue the tradition by using colors which are vibrant yet pleasing to the eye. The wallpaper must blend with and support desktop panels, windows and icons (as far as they appear on the desktop). The selection of colors must support the impression of confidence, lightness, and performance, without becoming a distraction in day-to-day use. Aside of this, there is no predefined, required palette for the wallpaper. Constraints ... ( no change ) Workflow ... ( no change ) ToDo ... ( same as Xubuntu ) Feel free to change as desired. [ubuntu-art] Without Submissions - We are Nothing
Hello Everyone, I am pleased to announce comments received off-line in reference to the Artwork Team Logo submissions are very positive and thank you. However as the clock ticks down on this task (2010-12-01) I would like to challenge the Team to think out of the box. To quote Paul Rand ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Rand ) ... If, in the business of communications, “image is king,” the essence of this image, the logo, is a jewel in its crown. Here’s what a logo is and does: A logo is a flag, a signature, an escutcheon. A logo doesn’t sell (directly), it identifies. A logo is rarely a description of a business. A logo derives its meaning from the quality of the thing it symbolizes, not the other way around. A logo is less important than the product it signifies; what it means is more important than what it looks like. In summary, it symbolizes who we are. This team supports Ubuntu, but more importantly it supports the greater community and the greater community does not have the resources available to Ubuntu. I encourage everyone who has not, to support this team/community with your talent as without submissions we are nothing. [ubuntu-art] Edubuntu Wallpaper
Jonathan, Thank you for posting this request to the project board. I took the liberty of creating an https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/Request-6 updated spec but I have a few questions. :-) * Target Audience Is the target audience young school age children or the class room? * The successful design will be accepted in the Scalable Vector Graphics ( svg ) format. There may be folks who prefer to use GIMP is svg really desired? * The desktop will be Gnome What is this correct? * Due 01/17/2011 Generally artwork arrives later in the release cycle, somewhere between user interface freeze and beta. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NattyReleaseSchedule * Pallet I made a guess at the pallet. The GTK theme appears to be Radiance. Is this correct? The inspirational image IMO has the right mix of colors but if this is not good we can certainly find a better image. :-) * Logo Does someone have a svg of the new logo? * Repository I went ahead and created a flickr group to show case submissions. Artist will upload submissions to their photo stream and then post it to the group. If you will create a flickr account I will set you up as an admin to this group. http://www.flickr.com/groups/uawt-6/ Best regards, John -- View this message in context: http://old.nabble.com/Edubuntu-Wallpaper-tp30268164p30268164.html Sent from the ubuntu-art mailing list archive at Nabble.com. -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art
[ubuntu-art] The Brickyard - Week of 11/19/2010
The following is a summary of Artwork Team activity for the week of 11/19/2010 :-) * Screenshots @ Ubuntu.com * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/Request-4 Request 4 on the project board. This topic received the most discussion and brain storming. As a result, Ivanka from the Design Team decided to place this task on hold pending further review and advice from the author of screensh...@debian.net. * Nucleus Meeting Called * As a result of the renewed activity of the Team, Martin Owens ( doctorno ) scheduled an IRC meeting to discuss topics such as leadership, grievance, and other processes of the team. 11/26 - 16:00 UTC on the IRC * Xubuntu and Edubuntu Natty Wallpapers * The Xubuntu and Edubuntu communities posted requests to the project board for wallpaper submissions. If I remember correctly, there was a thread some time back where many members indicated creating wallpapers was their interest. I believe this is an excellent opportunity for the team! * Artwork Team Logo Update * The submissions are still being posted and the quality and creativity is excellent. Thank you! The deadline is closing in (12/01) but there is still time for more ideas and submissions. As I stated before this is a high visibility icon which will add value to the team and the community. Don't be shy. :-) http://www.flickr.com/groups/uawt-1/ Submissions * Personal Note of Gratitude * I could not have been more pleased to see a post on the LibreOffice list which praised the guidance given by Thorsten to that community. Re: [ubuntu-art] Screenshots @ Ubuntu.com
Ivanka Majic wrote: The wiki page is somewhat off the mark but I didn't want to edit without discussing with you why. The following comments may be more a * brain dump * than anything else. :-) I do not know the intent or the desired outcome of the authors of screenshots.debian.net, but drawing a conclusion from the URL I assume the desire was to offer Debian users a method to showcase their desktop. The Ubuntu Software Centre desires to offer an enhanced user experience by providing information about products which will assist the user in determining the suitability of an offering to their needs. Although “screenshots.debian.net” is a good match, it’s not a perfect match. * The most pressing issue is screenshots may not be current and reflect what is being offered. In addition, there is no easy method (?) to expire an image and/or contact the submitter. * There is the unknown of appropriate content and this is managed. I realize “someone” reviews content at screenshots.debian.net but the approval process is unclear. * The Software Centre is package centric and in reality a package may be an aggregate of several functional deliverables. Theme packages are a good example of this. * In today’s world a graphic image is just one way to deliver information. The current solution does not support alternatives such as videos in the form of a screen cast. * Last, what is the impact to Ubuntu if screenshots.debian.net is unavailable? All of this leads me to believe building something new may be better than fixing something old. In addition there is a need from this team for an image repository. The title “Ubuntu Media Center” comes to mind. :-) Something tells me if we design it, someone will build it. Just some thoughts. (#FFF,#203b66,#2c5aa0) The traditional desktop experience is what will pick up more users for xubuntu as ubuntu moves into unity and gnome moves into shell. SO our wallpaper should reflect this by following some older traditions of ubuntu. Traditions like featuring the animal in the wallpaper. [ubuntu-art] Adding a Task to the Project Board
The work we perform may be classified as either a request or a proposal. The two are identical with the following exceptions. 1. A request originates from the community 2. A proposal originates from the team 3. A proposal has more risk as it may be rejected by the community Attached to every request or proposal should be a specification or spec. The spec informs team members who are interested in contributing what needs to be done. It may also serve as the criteria for acceptance ( does the submission satisfy the spec ). In agile development I often say define don't assign. The question is when should a task be added to the https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Tasks project board ? Requests - Requests from the community may be added upon receipt as long as they have a sponsor. -- If the spec is missing, set the status to Waiting spec -- If unassigned, leave assigned blank Proposals - I suggest proposals be discussed on the mailing list first and when there is agreement to proceed, add it to the project board. In the case of a proposal, the team member or the team is the sponsor. -- Proposal specs should be complete before posting to the project board -- In many cases with proposals, assigned is the same as sponsor Solicitation for Advice Generally requests for advice are best suited for the mailing list. If the discussion evolves into the creation of mock ups or performing research, it may be wise to post a task to the project board and create a spec as we did with the Ubuntu Forums request. I blogged on this topic here: http://www.projblog.com/?p=1803 I suggest we start with a Wiki page to capture submissions and provide guidance to the effort. Thorsten, will you create a page for this purpose? We also need to put some structure around this effort (size, file type, colors, etc). This could become a part of the guidance displayed on the page. Perhaps the Count Down Wiki page can serve as a template or the Ubuntu branding guidelines can help. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Website/MaverickCountdownBanner http://design.canonical.com/the-toolkit/ubuntu-brand-guidelines/ I know we have the talent, so don't be shy. If you are new to the list here's a chance to make a difference! For the moment let's not get consumed on how we will decide on the final candidate. We can work that process on a separate thread. Don't cut off the long tail. The problem with most communities being inactive is that there are not the two kinds of projects which motivate people: 1) Fun and very passive contribution which comes at random from contributors. You can see this sort of project on the dA group where we don't instruct or organise art to be made using ubuntu, we just passively let people contribute to the galleries which have a simple and light framework of rules. 2) Structured and focused projects. You'll need time limits, methods of contribution which are split up effectively into chunks, you need some education and most importantly you'll need about 3 people who will contribute the majority of the work. You'll get about 100 people contribution 45% in drabs, but they won't do anything without that %55 from the dedicated few. These are just some thoughts based on my own experiences with communities. Lets also summarize here : http://openetherpad.org/UbuntuArtwork Problem #1 There are far too many people on this list that never seem to post. Solution: Trim the list to contributors only, only those that post and contribute regularly. I have also had the same idea but I dont think this is a feasible idea. People will want to ask questions, like how the installer question was asked a few days ago. We can leave this mailing list as it is? maybe? What we could do is to make the lp team moderated https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-art And people can get added there once they state their intent. Any work in Ubuntu/Xubuntu/Edubuntu will only be included from Launchpad. So its better if the lp team was restricted to contributors. Problem #6 We no longer have any direction of what to do. Solution: This entirely depends on #4 and the skillsets we can tap on this list. At the very least, we start off small and create a community set of wallpapers, as well as alpha and beta wallpapers. Lets find out who to annoy to get this done. How would you feel if community artwork had an overarching loose theme, say “Humanity” or “Narwhals”? We can get this done , i dint want to push this too much since i wanted to test the waters here first.. ;) As I mentioned, I had been planning this for a while now, and http://openetherpad.org/UbuntuArtwork is a consolidate of my interaction with other teams. I had nearly given up because there seemed to be lack of interest from others. And I was being told it might be just in vain. Its not just Ubuntu. There are other derivatives we can help too! Xubuntu *for sure* wants help with their artwork! I believe the Xubuntu team has now subscribed to this mailing list too.. Let's hear a reply from them directly as well.. :) I have been silent because it seemed the list only wants to hear from the artists themselves. I requested help with Xubuntu artwork, and we still want and need help. Unfortunately, the call for artwork to both the Ubuntu community and DeviantArt resulted in few replies from artists. If the list became active contributors only, how would you expect anyone else to ever become active? To maintain an active list, you need new contributors that can actually become a part of the community. If Ubuntu is not accepting artwork, the derivatives certainly are. Ubuntu Studio, Edubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu will all accept help with artwork, if you are willing to help us. Xubuntu, at least, does not have it's own artwork team at this time, and would accept a team leader as well as members to work with that leader. - -- Charlie Kravetz Interim Xubuntu Project Lead Linux Registered User Number 425914 [http://counter.li.org/] Never let anyone steal your DREAM. But there is also the fact that people seem to generally be much more satisfied by the new default themes. This team/list has also just been very quiet this cycle. Rather than rushing to just put something new into the community-themes package, I think that we might better use this time to start brainstorming for the upcoming Natty cycle. Perhaps Natty would be a good time to really shake things up, dropping themes that haven't continued to evolve and trying to generate more excitement with some completely new content. Thoughts? - Andrew Starr-Bochicchio Ubuntu Developer / Debian Contributor -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art Andrew, Here is my recommendation. Ambiance Refined - William Middleton The wiki page is missing alot of detail although there is a reference to Ubuntu-Art and it is rated at 72% good. If William can update the wiki as to why a user may want to consider this theme I'm Ok with this submission - otherwise no. Ambiance Blue - Paolo Bianchini Seems more like a concept than a submission - no. Ambiancell - luxierayku Again the wiki page is lacking informaton a user might use when considering this theme - no. Finery - Immanuel Peratoner Ok Depends on equinox engine. Don't know if that is in the Ubuntu repository? :| Impression/Night-Impression Themes - ;) Ok Perfection GTK - luxierayku Ok Radial - tw Ok Salmon - yman Ok Simply Basic - William Middleton Looks like an interesting theme but there is no wiki content to support it - no. I pinged a couple of folks on devianART Ubuntu Artist about themes but did not receive a reply. pr09studio had several. As there was a lot process change this release some folks may have been confused and the discussion on the Ayatana thread may have added to the confusion. I suggest we go with the six themes and take an action item to discuss what make the most sense for Natty. We are fast approaching the time when community themes need to be in their final form. I plan to test next week against a fresh Maverick install and report my findings. [ubuntu-art] 10.10 Impression GTK Themes
Hello Everyone, I'm pleased to announce the availability of the Alpha release of the Impression and Night Impression 10.10 GTK themes for Maverick Meerkat. These themes may be tested with either Maverick or Lucid with the latest Murrine theme engine is installed. Packages are available from the https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Maverick/ImpressionGtkThemes Ubuntu Wiki . Screen shots may be viewed at http://www.flickr.com/photos/j_baer/sets/72157624409067576/show/ Flickr . Enhanced Metacity Theme Metacity code improvements should speed execution and the improved window control buttons offer simplicity in design with an intuitive approach to operation. Re-designed GTK Many improvements are available from enhancements made to the Murrine GTK engine providing a level of presentation second to none. The Impression series uses a gradient scroll bar and progress bar trough introduced by the Ambiance and Radiance themes. Muted, not bold; scroll bars are available but not in the way. Note book tabs are themed to provide a higher level of focus to the selected tab. Clicking a tab presents an illusion of movement as the selected tab becomes bright and the others fall to the shadows. Tool bars maintain a hint of shading to provide a measured amount of depth to the presentation. Scale controls follow the same design philosophy as scroll bars as the slider control button is muted until needed. Finally, the palette of Impression is the traditional warm gray splashed with Orange and the palette of Night Impression is a cool gray accentuated with Aubergine. Vibrant and exciting these themes deliver a powerful intuitive user experience and a consistent Ubuntu look and feel. Re: [ubuntu-art] New Communty Themes Wiki Page
Hello everyone, I've completed my vision of the public facing Community Themes wiki page and would like to replace the content of the current page with the new content. My desire in creating this page was to align with the new Ubuntu branding to the greatest extent possible and to showcase the themes without preference. My goal is Ubuntu users who desire to install this package will view this page to make an informed decision. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JohnBaer/SandBox I anticipate a new Community Themes page will be created to capture the essence of the current page. Thorsten, I need your advice on where this page should be located. [Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close
It appears there are two items causing concern with this team. The first – the window control buttons are now located in the upper left hand quadrant of the window frame. The second - the order of the buttons has changed. There is plenty of data to support locating the buttons in the upper left corner or upper right corner of the window frame. Which is better? I do not know but my assumption is folks do not choose an OS based on the placement of the window frame controls. If that were true Mac OS or MS Windows would be different. My belief is this decision was not made by the flip of a coin, the toss of a dart, or the personal preference of any single individual. I believe the concept was discussed, debated, and evaluated as to adding value to Ubuntu as it exists today and what it will become tomorrow. As to the order of the buttons, the same arguments apply. My suggestion is let’s not be too quick to judge and give it a try. I see a work-a-around is already in place for those who feel strongly the placement is incorrect. In my opinion the community should be willing to take reasonable risks to advance the user computing experience and stand ready to accept the challenges when the bar is raised. The number of comments offered on this subject stands as evidence to the strength of the community as everyone who participates takes pride in what the final solution becomes. Maybe the communication wasn't as good as it could have been but folks are busy and things will be missed. In some circumstances there is no right or wrong - just different. Lucid will be a success and that success is something we can all be proud of as I believe it will set the standard for all future releases. Loading the extension from disk is successful but other than the generic template extension none work (pdf import, report writer). -- [ooo-build] Help recommends installing Sun Report Builder instead of using the one included https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157409 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 157409] Re: [ooo-build] Help recommends installing Sun Report Builder instead of using the one included
Correction to previous comment. If the extensions are loaded via synaptic they install and perform as desired. The issue then become how does the user know this is the desired method? :/ -- [ooo-build] Help recommends installing Sun Report Builder instead of using the one included https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157409 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [ubuntu-art] Looking over the Fence: Fedora Wallpaper
Thorsten Wilms wrote: Hi! Interesting blog post by Máirín Duffy: http://mairin.wordpress.com/2009/10/24/f12-wallpaper-sprinting/ -- Thorsten Wilms Fedora certainly has an active art group and I'm sure the wallpaper for Fedora 12 will look as good as Fedora 11. However there is a lot to be said in what Ubuntu has to deliver. IMO when Karmic ships folks will be generally pleased with the changes and the quality of the presentation. As I alluded to in an earlier post with community themes added to the mix the total artwork package is very good. In addition to Fedora I also like and respect the efforts of the openSUSE project. It looks like 11.2 will have new professional artwork. [ubuntu-art] Community Themes
Ken, I find the mix of GTK themes to be very good when community themes are added. What is the possibility of having these themes added by default? [ubuntu-art] Community Themes Released
For those who are testing Karmic, the new Community Themes package is available. Thanks Andrew! To celebrate the pending release I created a new wallpaper titled Karmic Gazing Ball which is available here. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/NightImpression/Desktop15 :) -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Community-Themes-Released-tp25838616p25838616.html Sent from the ubuntu-art mailing list archive at Nabble.com. -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art
