Tonight, I tried to put into practice what I had written
earlier...only to discover that it doesn't work as outlined.
Apparently, when you do a direct keypad entry, it ERASES the SPLIT
function. So when you're done, you have hit the SPLIT button again.

Here is what I just timed (10 measures each category)
Using the Keypad entry method previously described (VFO A/B - touch
the ENTER FREQ button, touch the keys for the discrete QRG - touch the
"enter" button - and touch VFO A/B button again to get back on the

I use the presets all the time, just about every time I operate (cw).
I like them the way they are, but to be honest, I don't see a whole
lot of difference between "locking" them and adjusting them on the
fly.

OK...a local pushed me to try it out and I was curious anyway, so I
did the CW Paddle to RY thing. Works pretty well! I did have to
remember to send the IM after every "over" to shut off the idle.

Interesting reading. Here's my decades-old trick that always works well.
I used a small piece of electrical or masking tape. I place the
screw/other hardware into the tip of the screwdriver and do a wrap of
tape so that the edge of the tape just grabs onto the head/washer.

Someone wanted to know "how do you know" that RG6 is used on top band
for TRANSMITTING.
Just go the top band reflector and do an archive search.
Here is one from one of the 'most famous' top banders around. Yes,
Top banders use RG6 all the time and run full bore (and then some)
through it. At 1 Mhz, it is rated at 4kw.
If you're only interested in 100 watts output (you didn't say what
frequency you operate), you're good to go with RG6 up to 1GHz.
The "white stuff" is so cheap, you can replace it every 5

Lack of spots has never stopped DX contesting. Tune in this weekend
for the CQWW DX SSB contest (yeah, it is phone...ugh). You'll be
dazzled by all the DX on 20, 15, and maybe even some "good" stuff on
10 if you are there enough (not just trans-equatorial).

I'd like to take a look at your First Run K3 when it arrives (well, to

Seems that every time I post a friendly reminder (actually more like
when my anxiousness becomes extreme) about the "weekly communication"
promised by the Aptos crew, I get a bunch of private emails (and some
not private) giving me the last "shipping" update as posted on the
The Aptos crew indicated that we'd get weekly communications (updates)
about the K3.
Last update I saw was on the last day of last week (Sept 29). Guess
we're due for another update today!

Even though I've seen the K3 in person (at Dayton), I guess I had
forgotten how BIG they are compared to my K2. Seeing some side-side
with bodies in the background gives me a good idea how they will look
in SO2R setup.
The past comments about "small knobs" and "small box" come to mind,
