Ron's point is well taken. But here goes...
The 'family tree' that you see when you open Legacy is coming from your
'family file', which has a .ftb windows file extension. It appears that you
have set up Windows to hide your file extensions when you look at the file

Ward, when you save your family tree to a thumb drive, how do it? Do
you copy if from the Data folder? or export to a gedcom or legacy

I do not agree that one should recommend storing the *.fdb file on a thumb

As others have pointed out, your backup is a .zip file. You can't
open it but you can restore it. ^That is what a backup is for.
The .fdb file is updated all the time, you don't need to save it at
the end.
In the Customise menu, you can specify your thumb drive to be the

Firstly, please can we be clear about the usage of the word "saved". As you
make changes to your family file i.e. when Close or Save on exiting any screen
then Legacy saves changes used to the database - your Family File, and to the
location from which you opened the Family File.

You could link up children and assign that status. Later it is easy to find

Louise,
It is because of the unknowns which Brian has identified that I enter them as

That should do it. If your part tree is a complete line, you can
select it with the Focus Group options. If you want a collection of
bits, you can put all the fragments in the Focus Group, and produce
a consolidated Gedcom of them all. It will then contain several trees,
of course.

Your problem sounds like a general Windows issue. I could do it in
Linux, but I can't think of an appropriate search term. You need it to
search for (a) one or more spaces, (b) at the end of a line. In Linux,
the $ sign can indicate the right-hand end of the line. There may be
