Re: (313) theorem singles...

1999-09-25 Thread Andrew Duke
yes, 4 EPs. theorem feature answers this question
in full on cognition: http://techno.ca/cognition

here's an excerpt for that feature:

With the [4] Elements released on vinyl, twelve tracks now begged for
availability in the digital medium.
But with some of the songs at upwards of ten minutes and more, it was
soon obvious that not all of
the material in the series would fit on a compact disc, a format that
can hold a maximum of 78
minutes of music. “I spent a little over two weeks just listening to
all the tracks over and over; I
really just wanted to create an album out of all the singles and the
ones that really worked together
to create a journey.” Lawrence is quite happy with the result. “It’s
like one giant track almost—the
rhythms and the climaxes and the breaks, something that you could
listen to over and over that just
takes you somewhere else. I didn’t just throw a bunch of singles
together. I really wanted to have
motion and expression.” Lawrence’s time spent wrestling with the
dilemma was well used; in the
end seven of the tracks from the Elements series were used for the
Ion album, and the all important
   flow is certainly achieved.

hope this helps. andrew duke :)

(313) many non detroit music questions

1999-09-25 Thread Christopher Geary
I apologize for the non 313 nature, but I've had these questions on my
mind for quite some time and I haven't found any answers.

Dancehall questions:
Does anyone know the name of the artist/album/label/placeicanbuythese:
1. a track w/ a male vocal that is a bit on the rb tip: the chorus goes
show me what you want and i'll give you what you need show me how to
love you make it good for you and me, i never make a promise that i
can't keep verse there's no way to get around it girl your stuck with
me . . . (it is most definitely not beanie man, as i have been told by
numerous sources, but this song is cool and beanie man sucks [or at
least the song 'tell me what you want' does])
2. a very minimal track w/female vocal consisting mostly of got you in
the red light, red light, now i'm putting up a fight

world music question
anybody know if cheik lo's ne la thiass on world circuit/nonesuch/sony
is available on vinyl (especially the song set)?

electro questions (hey this might have some 313 stuff in it)
1. I've got a bolz bolz on ersatz audio (that's 313 right?) with an
electro track featuring some subbed out bass and a spooky female spoken
german vocal over the top that I really dig, but I've never encountered
any similar bolz bolz tracks. Are they out there? If not anybody have
suggestions in that vein.
2. I've previously posted about my appreciation of sutekh's of sarcasm
and exhaust (twice the appreciation now that i've got two) and I'm
wondering if yall got some suggestions for tracks that are anywhere near
to the creepy funk that is 'underhanded.'
3. Having just recently discovered Stewart Walker, I'm looking for shit
like 'proof of the long dark night' off jet fuel and longing

hard house:
I thought hard house was extinct after living in Chicago for two years
and only encountering deep/vocal/bad house, but I recently heard Gene
Farris play some HARD house, so fire away with recommendations
(preferably recently released stuff).

waiting for enlightenment

Re: (313) jeff mills on new years eve

1999-09-25 Thread Cyclone Wehner

I'm glad somebody finally asked about Mills new years eve. I was starting to
worry about my lack of plans and now that I know he's on the other side of the
world it narrows my choices a bit. So, ah... what the fuck is Earthcore? And in
what National Park?

Jeff Mills on NYE has been on 313 for a while. :)

More info follows below:

The event is called Welcome 2000 and is presented by Future Entertainment
and Hardware.

Here is the bill:

Jeff Mills
CJ Bolland
Funky Green Dogs
Murk
Hybrid
Phatts and Small
Adam Freeland
Anthony Pappa
Patrick Lindsey

More to come.

Also heaps of great local DJs and live acts including Voiteck.

It is to be held at Sheds 2 and 4 at the docks in Melbourne.

Tickets on sale October 1, $120 plus booking fee.

There will be an event programme out soon with all information.

Comments:

Awesome line-up I must say with something for everyone. FGD and Murk are
kinda the same act really. FGD is live and Murk DJing, I would assume.

By contrast Earthcore specialise in outdoor events usually with a trancey
theme. They are yet to reveal their plans though I have heard at least one
good name over the past few months that definitely isn't trance. It will be
a week long event, I believe. They wanted it at Ayers Rock but the
Indigenous Australians have said no, as understandably they don't want all
these lil' ravers crawling over their spiritual lands. Now a national park
is a possibility.

Re: (313) Toytronic/Slater

1999-09-25 Thread Cyclone Wehner
Whats the verdict on Luke Slaters new material btw?

Luke Slater's new album Wireless is just the shit. This is an album for both
listening and the dancefloor. It is electro/techno-driven music with deeply
burried guitar and breakbeats. I would imagine that 313 heads would love
this album. Slater's music has depth and conceptual power in the tradition
of Mills and others.

The song that is doing heads in with Melbourne's DJs is All Exhale, the
first single.

Personally though I think the track to kill for is Weave Your Web. It is a
classic track like Love (from Freek Funk) though musically it holds its own.

Anyone see that BBC production The Planets? The last episode examined
humanity's recorded attempts - and essential need - to find life and
sustainable living conditions elsewhere in the universe, as our sun and the
earth are now middle-aged and will eventually die. They used
computer-generated images to show how the sun would run out of fuel and
expand to become a red star, devouring all the planets immediately within
its orbit. Earth would possibly survive this but the planet would be
rendered unlivable and all life would melt away. I was thinking how Weave
Your Web would have been great theme music to this dramatic episode as it is
very cinematic, grand and spacey. It builds and builds but never climaxes
and then seques into the brutal distorted beauty of In The Pocket.

This comes from the Novamute bio:

Slater was determined to produce an album that almost went back to basics,
an album that utilised the sounds of his youth [don't be scared but Slater
liked pro rock] and pushed them into the future. Inspired by industrial
electronic rock, Slater drafted in live percussion and guitar to add muscle
to his sounds.

Wireless... is testament to Slater's ever developing musical mind. Not
content with remaining static and trading on the success of Freek Funk,
Slater has once again swerved violently to confound any pre- conceived
expectations.

Slater will also be in Melbourne for NYE for a different event alongside
(among others) Space DJz and FSOM.

I can't speak for the other states but if you are serious about
this music in Western Australia then the UR adage holds true - you should be
shopping at Complex Records (142 William Street Perth). Compared with the
chain stores (Central Station and Sanity) complex is 100x more dedicated to
deep music. You also get a much better selection any way (and in a very
timely fashion). If you hear about it on this list your guaranteed to be
able to get it at Complex - not so reliable at Sanity
As for the intimidation, I agree that it does happen to some extent
but Complex has plenty of female customers and a comfortable atmosphere -
its past the male only techno boffin stage.

Moral of the story: Shop underground where you can.
Not trying to be an advertisement but i strongly agree with the message on
the UR sleeves. Complex has made Perth the musical city that it is...

DJing (especially with Derrick) can definitely show your true colors.
It represents your tastes and your individual fomula for an hour
or so of music. bring it up, bring it down, bring it back up, etc. blah

I've seen Derrick only once but it truly elightened me on how
a DJ set could sound. He represented his own Detroit sound so well.
He played some Hood (Envy), Mills (Skin Deep and Sirens), Saunderson
(Veliocity Funk)
and others that were in that same vein (even some nice jackin Chicago
house).
I was hopin he'd play Wiggin but no luck. It wasn't even

the sound of his

no doubt of May's mixing skill but his track selection here left so much to

Actually Luke Slaters All Exhale is getting high praise from the
progressive house-funky breaks crowd. These are the people who like dj
keoki, dj icey, rabbit in the Moon, the Crystal Method ect...ect
they pretty much dominate the club and rave scene where I live.

If Luke is sick of the elitist-starving artist-purist techno community
and all the political snobbery associated with the underground techno
scene, I can understand him selling out.
Why not experiment with electronica, maybe those trend hungry raver kids
in the US will make you a millionaire.
After all, nobody complained when the Aphex Twin conformed to trend.
i guess he could've jumped on that tech house/ Basic Channel imitation
bandwagon but too many people are doing that and this is probably more
fun and profitable.
