Re: Sv: (313) paul johnson
Paul Johnson is played to death in holland also..(well his track that is..) it seems that mr. Johnson is earning some big money with this major Ibiza hit, it's a cheesy track but it still is Paul Johnson indeed i have to tell you all, that i don't really think this is a cheesy track, and i truly don't see it out of line with any of paul johnson's work in the past... he ranges from disco to booty, but always with a sense of humor... most of his tracks tend to be loopy with little variation (though the loops may be long), and even the disco ones maintain a stark, tracky deep basis having been a serious pau ljohnson fan since welcome to the warehouse i see this track as being perfectly paul... and i love his voice... i always picture him sitting in his studio saying all the silly shit in his songs eg you're so silly, uncle paul make me laugh, etc. peace out, holly
Re: (313) Slater sells out
For the 313: What do you think a *stereotypical* Detroit techno release consists of in terms of cover art and song names. in my mind a stereo typical detoirt release has NO cover art... just label art, and should be in a black jacket... and i don't give a shit what the song is named... cause i'll never remember anyway i 'lll only remember if its a1 or b2 or whatever. the less information, the more i'm left to feel and interpret the music myself... peace, holly
Re: (313) Slater sells out
For the 313: What do you think a *stereotypical* Detroit techno release consists of in terms of cover art and song names. My answer: It usually has blue metallic or electronic looking things on the cover (why do I think BLUE when I think Detroit?), and the songs are two words or less, like Monument or Code Error -- something like that. I'll give you two possible responses: Cover art? Hell, there are often as many white labels in circulation as there are legitimate releases for a lot of this stuff. Predominant color? Detroit is flat out BW... Titles? Either introspective (My Soul) or inter-stellar (Last Transport to Alpha Centauri) IMHO, 313 music is ideally packaged in graphic design that recalls comic book adaptations of Sci-Fi movies, or is so minimal that it replicates simplified machine design. And titles for me serve little function unless they support an overall theme for an LP, a la X-102... - There4IM

The sound ranges from tech house to deep techno. For all who are interested in a free promo copy, please e-mail me back to this address with your name and address. (313) mr. sicko
respect to mr. sicko for his well crafted book, Techno Rebels. I know many people around the planet are reading it and it is creating a buzz. I just finished it and for the last week or so ive been totally immersed in the world of detroit. i did not get exposed to 'troit techno until a bit after its beginnings, and dan's history lesson filled in many blanks for me, as well as even inspired a new wave of detroit music enjoyment in my interests and lifestyle... the book really supports an intimate relation between detroit music and the listener. -- mumtaz e-legal underground, chicago http://www2.uic.edu/~zlubin1 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: (313) mr. sicko
In one of the many reviews of the book (at amazon.com), someone asks why didn't Dan Sicko mention the things that techno fans listen for in techno music. I thought this was an interesting question. What do we listen for in techno music It's weird, and I'm really not sure why I listen to techno. Is it genetic? environmental? What?? bamm, s, bamm, s, bamm, s, Is that what I listen for? Help me figure this out!!!

In one of the many reviews of the book (at amazon.com), someone asks why didn't Dan Sicko mention the things that techno fans listen for in techno music. I thought this was an interesting question. Perhaps but Dan would've had to devote most of the book to answering it. Different people get different things from techno. What do we listen for in techno music Personally, I listen for human qualities in electronic sounds, qualities that would be harder to pick out from music that didn't use electronics. cyborg elpH wrote: What do we listen for in techno music It's weird, and I'm really not sure why I listen to techno. Is it genetic? environmental? What?? I guess i listen to 'techno' because it's interesting music. to me techno music can be forward thinking or a nostalgia representation of the future like electro. today the true definition of techno is vague because technology enables people to use a wide variety of tools at their disposal to create futuristic electronic dance music. thus you have many interpretations of techno and a more eclectic use of sounds, thats why you have so many dance music genres, has nothing to do with a mysterious detroit techno virus but more to do with the advancement of technology. the instrument that revolutionized techno music was not the Roland XOX box or synthesizer but the sampler. It was the old analogue medium evolving to a new digital/computer based medium creating new possibilities, making techno music more accessible and affordable for dj/producers. what really started techno was the creation of dance music on drum machines and synths/ keyboards. This had a mechanical-electronic result, so dance producers took a more futuristic/ sci fi approach to their music because high resolution sequincers and samplers were not available at the time so they could not reproduce the feal of a live band or disco orchestra. techno had more to do with visionary dance producers utilizing technology in a studio then live musicians playing interments. The TR 808 Rhythm Composer and Kraftwerk started it all. that was brilliant. later, spw PS. NO! I haven't read Techno Rebels yet.

(313) back from paris
I have survived Paris, and the flight home! Highlights of the trip: 1. Working. A lot. You don't want to know. On the bright side, they fed me at the Dassault Systemes cafeteria very well...French cooking really is all that, once you get used to chewing tougher beef that's raw in the middle ;-) 2. Wine. Omigod. The 20 franc bottle of french wine kicks major ass over the $10 bottles you get here. They don't export the REALLY good stuff. 3. Merguez Frite. Take a nice crusty french bun, add Merguez (kind of like a Slim Jim, only really spicy and good), a bunch of french fries, mayonnaise and mustard, and you have the premiere gutbomb a la Francais. Extra points if they deep fry the sausage and the fries together. 4. Pure Science live at the Rex. Used to wimpy 40 minute sets from a laptop in the US? This brit went mental for 2.5 hours with very catchy tech house. At one point he was rolling a joint and switching patterns on his MPC at the same time. I would love to find out more information about Pure Science. 5. Jeff Mills/Carl Cox/Sven Vath/Richie Hawtin at the Zenith. An opportunity to see Mills spin was a dream come true. And the boy delivers! Lots of ink has been spilled on Jeff as a DJ, and he is all that. What really impressed me is the steady booty dance he does when he's spinning. The top half of him is a blur of motion, and the bottom half is jacking full time, seemingly independent. 6. Meeting and hanging out briefly with Elodie Cousin, who is a very nice young woman, and her friend the other Elodie (DJ Laura Palmer). It is so nice to be in a foreign city and having at least a few folks willing to show you the ropes ... Merci plus bien Elodie! I tried to explain the english expression twist your arm to her and didn't get very far, but maybe it will catch on in Paris ;-) 7. Meeting and hanging with Chris O'Grady, who was a Motor DJ before moving to Paris a few weeks ago. I sorted him out for music software, so the boy is on the case making tracks. He and Emmanuelle gave me the grand tour of the Bastille and beyond... 8. The courtyard of the Louvre at night when it's lit up and the chamber groups are playing. Magnificent. 9. Meeting some label folks -- Goodlife Records from Grenoble have some very tasty tracks. I met some others but don't have all my business cards here to list them all. kent williams -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]

What do we listen for in techno music It's weird, and I'm really not sure why I listen to techno. Is it genetic? environmental? What?? This is an interesting question [snip]. Especially because I have always tried to explain with great detail how techno sounds (usually with silly metaphors). I had to suppress that kind of writing for Techno Rebels and stick to a more practical style. Ah, avoiding the question Mr. Sicko? :-) I've always wondered what it is about current generations that have shown a tendency away from linear narrative, and more towards repetition. Song forms with strong structure, lyric, and melody were especially useful when music technology (fidelity) was much lower. Does the mere presence of bass-bins allow us to enjoy bass-heavy forms of music? Aside from the purely social function that the Electronic Music scene provides, why are we drawn to repetitive music? Are our minds evolving to accept these are valid artistic statements? Is it a reaction/ reflection of the way we understand our world (bytes)? Is it still rebellious to listen to non-narrative machine music, the way rock was a rebellion against 40s and 50s pop? One good question spawns a host of others... - There4IM (ob313: np Interdimensional Transmissions comp)
