agreed. agreed. there's nothing better than when a group progresses naturally than skipping steps-esp. with the "electronic rock" sound. radiohead is one of those groups that have mastered the art of progression and thank god finally a group who made the move to a more electronic driven area with taste and skill-in true radio head fashion. After reading todd sines' article about the music business on hyperreal ( and various other sources) It seems as though it is extremely tough to make enough money to support yourself. After reading todd sines' article about the music business on hyperreal ( and various other sources) It seems as though it is extremely tough to make enough money to support yourself. I'm not talking about support like, " See my brand new Analogamaticuberfilter XK6, it matches the color on my BMW ." I mean support like, " Damn, I guess I'm eating macaroni and cheese...AGAIN (staring a a box of newly pressed vinyl and wondering if.. just in case, vinyl is edible) It seems for the up and coming artists money would play a big factor in breaking out. It can cost alot of money to press your own records, buy equipment, move out of your mom's house, etc. Anyway I was wondering if anyone out there wondered about the same thing. peace

you actually have this? I heard DMX crew play it a while ago at the orbit and it rocked like a coked-up romanian orphan, how much do you want for it?? Seth It didn't make the AMG list but I do happen to have a really rockin' electro piss-take of the Knight Rider theme tune along with three other Knight Rider related tunes with KITT in the title...the single is acutally called Michael Knight and it has some hip-house style rapping... Tory techno

I reckon this techno is probably Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" which they have used before without consultation. too much rigidity and analysis right there! if you don't have da funk, you don't have the funk. period. havin' da funk means you can transcend ANY musical category / genre, and adapt to ANY situation, without need for practice, nor analysis. when you guyz complain about millz / may et al, you must realize that they usually travel wit the same 2 boxes: they ain't doin' no "sultan of brunei - let's test out theze mothas' baggage handling systemz". imagine, if they could take a container of records with them..[ and, if derrick could take hiz entire wardrobe], tha serious damage these brothaz would do! too much analysis killz any other skillz you may possess - you gotta FEEL!. the same deal applies to sex. out. bond. - Original Message - From: "darw_n" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "tristan watkins" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "Jim Bishop" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, October 03, 2000 1:40 PM Subject: Re: [313] planned dj sets, derrick may > My opinion of this is that I feel it depends on your approach, either you > playing for the dance, or your playing on a more fluid and compositional > level... > > If your playing primarily towards the dancers, than you need to be able to > shift directions at any given time. > > But if your more of the "here's my thought" type of DJ, playing for the > composition, than a set is often more appealing... > > The best ones of coarse flip around. Re: [313] planned dj sets, derrick may
My opinion of this is that I feel it depends on your approach, either you playing for the dance, or your playing on a more fluid and compositional level... If your playing primarily towards the dancers, than you need to be able to shift directions at any given time. But if your more of the "here's my thought" type of DJ, playing for the composition, than a set is often more appealing... The best ones of coarse flip around. Playing their piece in-between segments of playing the dancers piece... I carry what I call my "book marked" pieces, in which three or so records simple *must* be together, then I vary those chunks around... But if the "set" is amazing, then by all means, play the set. darw_n "create, demonstrate, toneshift..." http://www.mp3.com/darw_n http://www.sphereproductions.com/topic/Darwin.html http://www.mannequinodd.com - Original Message - From: "tristan watkins" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Jim Bishop" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, October 02, 2000 5:18 PM Subject: Re: [313] planned dj sets, derrick may > Most of the time he seems to be working from the same > crate, if you will, and maybe has a few new records > thrown in. We laid this to rest in 1993 on ne-raves in the fabled "Moby, go away" thread, after he showed up on alt.rave to whinge at those who were annoyed with his mimicking actually playing drumpads during his shows of that era, when it was all on DAT. So, let Moby be Moby, and let's move on. phred
Re: [313] planned dj sets, derrick may
Most of the time he seems to be working from the same crate, if you will, and maybe has a few new records thrown in. I can't really get tired of it though. He does it so damn well. Now, I'm probably bating more flame, but I like to plan my sets within reason, and I've been spining vinyl for over six years. I think I posted about this a long time ago, and the reaction was not too good, especially from a Detroit audience. My problem is this: I am not a professional DJ. I have limited time, particularly when I'm focusing on making music, so when I practice before I spin out, I like to try and get an idea of the set I'm going to play. Sometimes I'll try to work out two distinct house and techno sets, and sort of merge them together when I play live in a new way, using a lot of the same songs. It gives me a way to practice mixing the songs I'm going to play without becoming too repetitive for me as a DJ, and the end result still allows me to have some flexibility to respond to the crowd, my whim or time sudden time constraints. I *would* shoot from the hip all the time if I had that luxury. But I've got lots of records, I like to play different records every time I spin (it's a rare song that I play out more than three or four times), and when I don't have a lot of time to practice I "forget" records, and it shows through in my mixing. I think any good DJ will tell you that you need to know your records. Practicing in this way is how I get re-acclimated to the records I hope to play, and helps me sound that much better. I don't think that's such a bad thing, even if it might kill *some* of the spontanaeity towards the beginning of my sets. And even if I've heard some of the set, no one else has, which in my mind is key. oh sh*tno pleaseI try to get out but they keep pulling me back in! All I have to say is this (directly quoted from page 109 of the Oct 2nd Time magazine): A SOUL TO KEEP by Julie Rawe "What's an eternal soul fetching these days? The one belonging to electronica artist MOBY went for a paltry $41 when it was auctioned last week on eBay by a former longtime friend. Indie-film director Paul Yates claims Moby has been selling out: all 18 songs on his platinum album, PLAY, have been licensed for use in commercials and TV shows ranging from Nissan ads to Dawson's Creek. Yates also alleges that Moby is trying to doctor his image: the musician is now distancing himself from Yates' upcoming comedy, PORNO, which includes a scene of Moby playing guitar with two sex toys strapped to his head. As executive producer, Moby no longer agrees with the film creatively, his manager says. And if the film never makes it to theaters, perhaps copies will pop up on eBay." Fred From: "J. S. Back On Topic Please!
What the hell is happening to 313? Why is it that a small minority of posts are 313 relevant and every post that starts on-topic meanders off in to Sweden or MTV? Please let's keep the flames, the tempers, the nazis and all the rest of that crap off list for a while and see if there is some content to be had. To try and get things stated, I'll provide a little story that shows all is not destroyed in the *world* of Detroit. I just moved to Baltimore and went to see 95 North and Lil Louis Vega in DC this last weekend with a couple of fellow 313ers. Due to laundry circumstances beyond my control, I was wearing my f*cktrance shirt from DEMF in what I presumed would be hostile [read: glow-stick infested] territory. Let me pre-empt flames from those who may have been involved with the making of the first shirts. Had I known, I would not have bought my rip-off, not that I don't like it still - it is a cool shirt. So anyway, I'm chillin' on the dancefloor, trying to get some dancing fuel in me, when a guy with an ear-to-ear grin wanders up pointing and laughing. Apparently the guy was from Detroit, he had a posse of Detroit-lovers with him, and knew the shirt from DEMF. All of this transpired in a city that's known for an absence of techno. I'm not really sure why that's relevant to on-topic discussions, but it's got to be better than hearing about Dickweed, BT, Moby or 313 race wars volume XII (which has been discussed ad nauseum, at two-month intervals for at least the last two years). This is not the right forum for a sophisticated discussion of race. It's a sensitive topic, and email is not the right medium for clear communication with strangers that may be half way around the globe. I'm sure there are a number of better forums in which to discuss it online. If nothing else, please take it private if you want to start a discussion about race in music. It has all been discussed here way too many times, usually at a more sophisticated level than what we've seen lately. Visit the archives if you don't believe me. Or better yet, I'm sure we could *all* learn some more about race if we took the time to read more books by the people who devote themselves to working out the most complex socal problems of our times. And for God's sake, if you think you're "right" about race, take a step back and realize it's like driving. Everybody think's their views about race are "right". Clearly, somebody's gotta be "wrong" if somebody's "right", and it could be you. So please, take that into consideration before you start flaming someone on this list who is probably on a completely different page of the racism learning curve. This is an international community after all and race relations are different everywhere. End rant. If anyone wants to flame me now, please take it private. That's my point anyway. So, hoping to actually get back to 313, I checked out supershere.com as suggested recently, and there are some nice sets from Carl Craig, Derrick May, Colette, Derrick Carter, Mouse On Mars and others. Well worth a visit. Focus! Tristan __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Photos - 35mm Quality Prints, Now Get 15 Free! http://photos.yahoo.com/
planned dj sets, derrick may
what is the general concensus on laying out your whole set ahead of time. I think every time i have seen derrick may play he has played the same tracks in the same order for the mostpart. Here at the esi fest in lansing i swear he played the same set as the demf (for the most part). not to show any disrespect but you even see those guys out there with pitch speeds and other records listed. to an extent its cool when your picking up skills but what if your the "inovator". I myself feel inclined to play what come to mind, granted a couple of steady mixes, is'nt that what makes a dj an artist? jim
