assorted percussion instruments...? None other than Mr. Oswald. That would
have been in the early/mid 80s. I *thought* he had some involvement in
Palais Schaumberg (the band Holger started with Thomas Fehlmann) which
spuutered out in the mid-80s, but I can't prove it. Seems like Andreas Dorau

if anyone isn't familiar with the Associates catalogue, PLEASE don't think
the cover of Heart of Glass is representative of it. It was some of the

Yep they sure where both a members of the German band Palais Schaumburg.
Palais Schaumburg was one of the important band eighties' in underground scene
called the 'Neue Welle' (new wave). They played a kind of weiry funky dancable
new wave music and sang in german which sounded pretty extraordinary.

Later they made one record with the producer of Depeche Mode/Wire (Gareth

They must be in their fourties now :-) and still doing fine.

On a similar note... good record shops? Apart from Innercity. I have already

2000-11-01 Thread Holly.C.MacDonald-Korth

I feel the need to point out two issues which the NPR story i heard last
night included, and this Reuters story omitted:

1) The BMG service would be a service within the current Napster model.
That is, the impression that I got from the story was that it would be an
add-on to the current service, where the current version of Napster would
run along side this new BMG service, so subscription would be optional.

2) The entire deal may be rendered moot if it is ruled that users are
within their rights of sharing under copyright law, an issue which is
currently under consideration.

It's OK, good even. I just find it rather derivative of Mills myself -
turning Mills into formula. He is an excellent DJ, I will say. Me, I am much
more enamoured with Oliver Ho's productions and would recommend Listening To
The Voice Inside, a great techno album for all environments and times of
day.

I think all this may be deja vu for some; I think this topic was discussed
for a couple of weeks only just recently - maybe the archives will help you
more. Some Scandanavian guy on this list had some cool insights into the
work of Ruskin as well as Surgeon and Ho.

I respect BMG either way for realizing that Napster and other file sharing
technologies are going to stick around (legal or not) and working to find a
way to incorporate it into a business model. I think if all the major
labels would see this like BMG, and worked together to create a subscription
service, it would be worth it to still be a member for most of the
mainstream music community. Even if the service was $20 a month, it would
still be worth it for most people, considering the amount of music that
would be available, and would serve the artists and napster well.

That said, I would equally hate to see the Napster model drown in corporate
poo poo.

I guess I'm hoping it's determined that listers have a right to file
sharing; that way Napster can decide what's best for the service.

Musik And Maschine Techno Congress

2000-11-01 Thread Cyclone Wehner

I just obtained The Wire (August) with the feature on the DEMF and while I
was reading it I came across the editorial.

In early July, an international jury at the Musik and Maschine Techno
Congress, a techno trade fair run by Berlin's Tresor Club and Jeff Mills,
named us Magazine of The Year...

It goes on to say how Kodwo Eschun was voted Journalist of The Year.

The Musik and Maschine Techno Congress sounds very interesting and could be
great but I have been unable to find any info on it, let alone any reports
about what happened at it. I have no problems with a techno secret society
but I find it odd that they should claim to be international when they're
not. I have yet to find any Australian who was involved in any way or
invited to attend - in Melbourne alone there are promoters like Richie
McNeill of Hardware Corp and Richard Maher of Gasp, who are very talented
individuals who have both fostered different aspects of the techno scene in
Melbourne (where techno is almost the dominant form of electronic music
culture) and beyond, Bundy in Adelaide and Biz-E in Sydney, and others, and
then there are DJs and producers, HMC and the Juice Crew in Adelaide,
Voiteck, Southern Outpost, Kazu Kimura in Brisbane, etc, etc. Richie was
actually in Europe at the time, too! His assistant is a friend of mine and
she thinks Richie did not attend, or was not asked. Now I am not saying that
Australia is necessarily important in the wider scheme of things, but it is
one place where I can do some research and I figure if Australia wasn't
represented, then it's likely that other countries with strong techno scenes
were not represented. Now I guess if Detroit had put on one such event I
would not have any qualms at all, it would have a different symbolic
significance like the DEMF, but it's because it's a European outlet (I
accept Tresor's place in the European/transatlantic history, so that's not
the issue) claiming to be representative of the international scene. Did
anyone from Detroit attend? It's this Euro-centrism again. Does anyone else
find all this odd? Does this make sense?

The idea is correct, the implementation needs work. Sooner than
later, most of your dedicated digital gear can be trashed in favor of
it being in your computer. Later rather than sooner, your analog
gear will find the same place, after being digitally modelled.

The next revolution won't be a piece of software, though. It'll be a
new human/computer interface that will allow you to manipulate
digital things more intuitively. Our mind and muscles operate in the
analog, and that's the rub.

Great! then i can buy it all at firesale prices.

The thing people need to learn is that when it comes to music making and
sound production, nothing cool is ever obsolete.

The user interface of the piano, violin, and trumpet (for example) are going

the demos in your current hardware synths ya? It's similar to the hype that

appeared to be very archaic. This taught me a very valuable lesson about
worshipping a false God (hardware), when this God is truly in the music.

Great! then i can buy it all at firesale prices.

The thing people need to learn is that when it comes to music making and
sound production, nothing cool is ever obsolete.

The next revolution won't be a piece of software, though. It'll be a
new human/computer interface that will allow you to manipulate
digital things more intuitively. Our mind and muscles operate in the
 analog, and that's the rub.

The user interface of the piano, violin, and trumpet (for example) are going
to take a long time to top. Of course you actually have to PRACTICE them.
Even things that are 'easy' to use are hard to use artfully.

The Musik and Maschine Techno Congress sounds very interesting and could be

there is some information at http://www.musikundmaschine.com/

The purpose of Musik und Maschine GmbH is to create a social
platform where interested and established figures in the
Techno Music Community can interact and explore subjects like:
history/status- quo/future, enhancing/expanding what we do,
creating contacts and relationships and many more opportunities
in the field and future of Techno Music. Musik and Maschine will
organize discussion groups, lectures, and summits as well as a
fair and various additional events to fulfill these goals.

One of Musik und Maschine's intentions is to review Techno's
history and to trace connections between Germanys youth culture
and electronic music. Groups such as Kraftwerk and Tangerine
Dream are often named as the grandfathers of Techno. Furthermore
Kurt Schwitters, the Da Da Movement and Walter Ruttmanns film
Diagonalsymphonien from the 20's as well as George Antheils
Ballett Mecanique originate from the rich fund available for
the investigation of the phenomenon Techno.
Musik und Maschine is an initiative to research this area and
enhance an international communication on electronic music.
A close cooperation with the Humboldt University is planned in
this area.

Jeff Mills Metropolis

2000-11-01 Thread Kent williams
Got the CD -- some very nice work from Mills. Even some cool
dancefloor tracks, which nonetheless I can imagine working well
with some of the scenes from Metropolis

2 odd things: the quite noticeable tape his on all tracks, like
he mixed down to a cassette. And those liner notes! Doesn't anyone
at Axis edit what he writes? I mean I know what he's trying to
say sort of, but he does this odd thing where he can't seem to
get the correct subject to be affected by the right verb. Sentences
like:

The probable cause, my mind being inflicted then becomes stimulated
not only by the plot but also, intrigued by the method in which
the producer choses to present the plot of the film to the viewer.

FW: Top Ten Tekno

2000-11-01 Thread McCartha, Merrick

 Okay,
Now that everyone and there mom has emailed me telling me to go to a
record store and listen for myselfI'd like to remind. you all that
there are a bazillion tekno records out there! And NO I don't have the
time to spend in a record store sifting through them all (assuming there
is a decent central tekno record store in San Diego). All I'm trying to
do is get a good baseline for what is considered by many to be 'good'
tekno. This way I can compare the records I have (from years ago) to the
current styles and get some kind of variance (understanding). I don't
know who the hot new artists are...I don't know who's branched off and is
doing whatever...and most importantly...I'm trying to figure out where I
lost track of tekno (GOA? Jungle?...what the f ** k does that mean?) and
why trance is more popular in San Diego than tekno
 (--Flabbergasted!--???).

 So.Sean (Sean E. D.) Deason recommended I check here. I asked
himbut you know Sean..(long pause)you'll figure it out.

 Any help is appreciated

broadcasts will be each wednesday from:
 2000-2300GMT / 2100-CET

first show Wednesday, November 1st, 2000.
 [in] other words.. . tonight!

you'll need [the] WinAMP MP3 player to listen [to] the show.

The good:
It's an MP3 stream (I hate RealPlayer and Winblows Media Player)
The music sounded good (modulo the bad, below)

The bad:
11 kHz, 16 Kbps??? :-(

Blah. My cable modem wants 44 kHz, 128 Kbps. Lots of other streams give
it to me. Any chance of a higher bandwidth stream in the future? :-/

We need more Net music like this. Just at higher bandwidth :-)

P.S. Nice domain name, btw :-)

Re: [313] We Know It - Wee Papa Girls

2000-11-01 Thread the real me
I don't believe It's like that (Wee Papa Girls) has been mentioned--- the
US 12 has a K. Saunderson mix on it; also includes an instrumental on the
U.K. version. Much better than Wee know it, IMHO...

I dug up this old record I have, In House Vol. 1, Jive 1988 and it has We
Know It produced by Kevin Saunderson, an absolutely ripping acid house
track!! Also has Samantha Fox's I wanna have some fun remix by
Saunderson, and three Adonis tracks...

Anyways, I was wondering what are Saunderson's other acid house
productions

from that time era?
