a visual...
http://www.once-upon-a-forest.com/ enter this, then press the number 7 in the lower row. Notice one thing, hit #7 many times if you have to. It is unique every time, and unique to every viewer. The original artists main abstract (and undefined) intention is still there, but the total picture can not be without the viewer (or at least the computer) being involved, and it will never be repeated again, even to the same viewer. The viewer, and indeed *every* viewer of this piece, is equally as creative and unique in the process. Not only does each view become a unique and never repeated creation, but the view has the ability to *suggest* definition via direction of the drawing crosses by moving the mouse into the area of the crosses. Again, let me reiterate this, I find this to be very important. The main aspect of the original artist is still within the piece, never to be understood by the viewers, but yet, the viewer is completely equaled with the original artist. this is *exactly* what toneshifting is with repetition and definition art... I'm not trying to start another heated debate, but I am kinda full of joy right now that I have come across such a work that puts the theory of toneshifting into a simple and accurate visual realm... darw_n create, demonstrate, toneshift... http://www.thedemonstration.com http://www.sphereproductions.com http://www.mannequinodd.com search djdarwin on napster

UK TV alert
Tonight: The Money Programme BBC2, 7.30pm 'Dance music nowadays bears little resemblance to the days in the 80s when the police were on constant alert for illegal raves. Now it's superclubs such as Cream and Renaissance, corporate sponsorship and DJs with six-figure salaries. Club owners realised the huge potential to expend and now make more money on branded CDs than on club admissions. The corporate world is happy too, as it has finally discovered a way of targeting notoriously fickle 18-24-year olds. But now that the elite has become the mainstream, a backlash is already underway, as disgruntled dance fans are again hosting the sort of select events that started the whole thing.' I need to vent for a moment...
begin; /rant on; DJ's and Producers: Have you ever lost that perfect mix or track to something stoopid? Yes? Lemme tell you what happened last night: I was recording my new mix CD on my main PC. It took 4 bad starts to get into the groove, the 5 time was beautiful. My minimal techno grooves fit together, I mixed 3 confusing Terrance Dixon tracks in a row perfectly. Electro tracks were bangin; hell, just for kicks I dropped an old NWA track into the mix followed by some DJ Unknown. Ghetto Tech, followed by 2 or 3 house tracks and finishing up with 2 Rob Hood and 2 Jeff Mills tracks. It was all but perfect. I listened to it, noticed that I clipped my signal towards the end (a little digital distortion), but it was acceptable. Then I went to save it: Windows told me I ran out of virtual memory. It couldn't save it at all. I tried everything I could, moved whole application directories to my second drive to free up space. I still couldn't save. My main hard drive is 8GB, but only 5 of it is being used for Windows (the other 3 is for Linux). My workspace HD was just upgraded to 13GB. All of it is for Windows. If I had more space on my main drive (the one Windows uses for virtual memory) I could have saved the mix and I would be announcing to you all that it was completed and soon to be released. Here's the worst part about it all: 2 weeks ago I bought 2 new hard drives, a 13GB for my workspace and a 20GB for the main drive (15GB for Win98 and 5GB for Linux). My old work drive was failing and I managed to dump the data to the new 13GB drive. I put off installing the new main drive. Had I not procrastinated, none of this would have happened. It's not like this hasn't happened before. I lost 2 demo EP's to HD failure. I saved MIDI files and audio to the same drives. Gone. 1 of the drives got beat with a hammer in disgust. The whole time I was recording the new mix, my second PC was rendering the cover for the CD. I ended up posting it to my site anyways. (www.geocities.com/labwerx), thank you Clever_Shen for the CD's title. Ok... I'm done. Feelin much better. /rant off; end;
313 Technotourist invades Sydney, film at 11
I'm headed to Sydney this Saturday, arriving in Sydney late (10 PM ish) on Sunday night. I expect to be well knackered (L.A. time will be 3:30 AM ish early Sunday morning) and have to be off 10 hours later to parts north and 3 well-deserved rest days on Heron Island. I'll be back down to Sydney on Thursday, March 15th around 10 PM and I'm there 'til Sunday the 18th at 7 PM. I'm aware that Mills is supposed to be playing somewhere on Saturday the 17th. (I can't stay 'til his Metropolis showing on Monday, alas) Where is it again? I might be pretty tied up those 3 days in Sydney, but if any 313'ers in the area want to give me a shout at this addy, let me know - gimme a phone # and/or address and/or e-mail address and maybe I'll have a chance to add some more 313'ers to my trail of listmembers I've met (currently I've met 313'ers from L.A., Detroit, Oregon, Canada, Holland, Finland, England and Spain). :-) G'day, - Greg (Technotourist, West Coast division)

You know, I switched from Sound Forge 4.5 to Wavelab so I could use some of my sweet VST plugins. I never had a problem like this with SF. Then again, I had more free space back then too (I just recently installed Unreal Tournament (full install), Quake3, and Half Life). Re: [313] I need to vent for a moment...
wait a second... Where are you sending your waves as they record?? You *need* to send them in an no OS HD, and it *should* be 7200 rpm's. But the real key is that there can NOT be any programs or op system on the disk you are recording to, not even a partitioned drive. If you do, you run a huge risk of failure, unless you have a P4 or over clocked water cooled AMD 1.5 GHz and a gig of ram and a 10,000 rpm drive... even then, chances are there for record failure... darw_n create, demonstrate, toneshift... http://www.thedemonstration.com http://www.sphereproductions.com http://www.mannequinodd.com search djdarwin on napster - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2001 12:12 PM Subject: Re: [313] I need to vent for a moment... Re: [313] I need to vent for a moment...
Where are you sending your waves as they record?? You *need* to send them in an no OS HD, and it *should* be 7200 rpm's. But the real key is that there can NOT be any programs or op system on the disk you are recording to, not even a partitioned drive. If you do, you run a huge risk of failure, unless you have a P4 or over clocked water cooled AMD 1.5 GHz and a gig of ram and a 10,000 rpm drive... settle down, mister toneshift. where exactly are you getting this information? I record to my c drive all the time, with a whole bunch of other processes running. I did so on my old p133 with 64 megs of ram and a 5400rpm hard drive too, and never had a problem. as long as your drive defragmented and ample swap space before you start recording, you'll be fine. you don't have to pretend to be an expert on every topic, you know. playa-hating since 96, chris
Re: [313] I need to vent for a moment...
That's funny.. I run a P3 733MHz with 128Mb of ram and have never ever had a recording failure, but the average problems are clipping and defragmentation. I use a 20GB partitioned drive and send all audio to the non-OS partition. You should always up your system virtual memory and never point it to your OS partition. This is accomplished through the System Icon under the Control Panel. I would also recommend getting all the Windows updates for Win98, and regularly look for more. Uncle Microsoft is still pulling it apart and fixing problems inherent in the DOS layer. Re: [313] I need to vent for a moment...
Ok: 1. As Chris said, OS space is fine (I'm a PC Tech during the day and I used to sell and set up audio hardware and software around Detroit a coupla years ago, I've been doing this for quite some time). In fact, I've recently recorded quite a few smaller mixes recently with no problem. It's just this big one that caused a problem. 2. 7200RPM drives are not necessary. I used to record back in the day on sub 5400RPM boys with no problem. 3. Other programs on the drive hurt nothing. You don't need an Athlon or P4 (for god's sakes, no P4's, they're horrible!). I recorded mixes on a 5x86 133Mhz machine w/24MB of RAM and a 540MB HD back in '97. What you're proposing is overkill. Venue Info
Hi All, I was wondering if anyone has info on open venue sites for the DEMF weekend. Live acts would be Dopplereffekt, Ultradyne, Tangible aka Gumshoe, and maybe Drexciya (still working on that, so far no luck...). DJ's would be Adam X and Heather Hart (both from Sonic Groove in NYC). The main thing slowing us down right now is finding an open venue that would fit somewhere between 500-1500 people. If there are any local promoters on this list feel free to contact me if you would be interested in this endeavor. We are looking at about an 8 hour after-party after one of the DEMF nights. Peace, Alex
