Go to http://www.netsquirrel.com/combatkit/postage.html for the latest on
Bill 602P (which doesn't exist by the way). And check it out too because
the info is from CANADA. This legend sure does get around. On this page the
lawyer is Toronto lawyer Richard Stepp QC, on the one you sent it is a
Washington lawyer... get it? The sh*t is fake.

Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 09:03:38 -0500

This isnt related to Techno soap operas ...But quite related to the list..

The federal government is trying to get money for e-mail...
    Please pass onto anyone interested.

    VOTE NO ON Bill 602P
    Guess the warnings were true.
    Federal Bill 602P 5-cents per E-mail sent.
It figures! No more free E-mail!
    We knew this was coming!!
Bill 602P will permit the Federal Government
to charge a 5-cent charge on every delivered
E-mail.  Please read the following carefully
if you intend to stay online and continue using E-mail.

The last few months have revealed
an alarming trend in the Government of the
    United States attempting
to quietly push through legislation that will
affect our use of the Internet.
Under proposed legislation, the US Postal Service
    will be attempting to bill
E-mail users out of alternative postage fees
    Bill 602P will permit the
Federal Government to charge a 5-cent surcharge on
every E-Mail delivered, by billing Internet
Service Providers at source. The consumer
would then be billed in turn by the ISP.

    Washington DC lawyer Richard
Stepp is working without pay to prevent this
    legislation from becoming law.
The US Postal Service is claiming lost
    revenue, due to the proliferation
of E-mail, is costing nearly $230,000,000
    in revenue per year.
You may have noticed their recent ad campaign:
There is nothing like a letter.
Since the average person received about 10 pieces
of E-mail per day in 1998,
the cost of the typical individual would be an
    additional 50 cents a day
    - or over $180 per year - above and beyond their
    regular Internet costs.
Note that this would be money paid directly to the
US Postal Service for a service
    they do not even provide.

The whole point of the Internet
    is democracy and non-interference.
    You are already paying an
exorbitant price for snail mail because of
    bureaucratic efficiency.
It currently takes up to 6 days for a letter to be
    delivered from coast to coast.
If the US Postal Service is allowed to tinker
    with E-mail, it will mark
the end of the free Internet in the United
    States.

    Our congressional representative,
Tony Schnell (R) has even suggested a
    $20-$40 per month surcharge
on all Internet service above and beyond the
    governments proposed E-mail
charges.  Note that most of the major newspapers
    have ignored the story the
only exception being the Washingtonian which
    called the idea of E-mail
surcharge a useful concept who's time has come
    (March 6th, 1999 Editorial).
Do not sit by and watch your freedom erode away!

    Send this E-mail to EVERYONE
on your list, and tell all your friends
    and relatives to write their
congressional representative and say NO to
Bill 602P. It will only take
a few moments of your time and could very well
    be instrumental in killing
a bill we do not want.

    PLEASE FORWARD!

St. Germain?

2001-03-28 Thread TurnTheTable
I was flipping threw channels and heard the track Rose Rouge by St. Germain
on MTV. It was being played in the background as a boy band (sorry but I
don't know the name) were in the act of ripping off there clothes on stage.
So my question is...Does St. Germain have any videos out? Is it just
coincidence that the song was being played or is St. Germain going after the
Teen Pop Culture.

Moby should pull his head out of his ass... hip-hop was great in the early
90's! There was more than just gangsta rap around. That's the problem with
his all-or-nothing sways. He did the same thing with techno and dance music
in the mid-90s when he thought all of it was going the way of Aphex Twin. He
started listening to the Seattle Sound and so he attempted to make a
punk/grundge record. It failed and his agent told him to get back to making
music that his fans liked so he did. He will deny this though. I've seen
quotes a-pleanty from him saying that he was leaving techno because he
thought it was stagnent. He can try to deny it and say that his words are
being twisted around but after seeing a letter _from him to URB magazine_
saying why he was leaving dance music his denial of it just doesn't stand up
anymore. Moby changes to please. That's why I don't consider Moby techno.

I can honestly say that I do not know much about Moby's music, but his
last interview in a recent URB definately caught my eye. Check out these
quotes. The first one was a responce on what he thought of Hip Hop now
and then:

...And at that time there was so much great house music and techno being
made, so in the early 90's I didn't pay attention to it at all...why when
I can go listen to Derrick May, why would I want to listen to N.W.A.?

Believe it or not, even though he is mainstream, he was still influenced
by the Detroit pioneers.

To be honest, I dont think it will be a horrible thingif he gets booked.
He will attract a lot of people, maybe even more out of towners, and i
doubt that they will show up for his set and leave, refusing to expose
themselves to that 313 stuff. I mean last year on the main stage on the
last night, the line up was Kevin Saunderson, Rolando, Derrick May, and
Richie Hawtin. How can you ever expect to come close to that every year
without rehashing the same lineup?

Okay, like I couldnt tell you the names of like 3 moby songs. I dont
listen to his music, i dont know anything about him, and I certainly dont
hate him. I dont know enough about what he does or the music he makes to
pass judgement on him. I have no reason to go out and buy his records,
nor do i have any reason to diss him and such. Its just that i saw that
quote in URB, and thought it was list relevant. APparently, he has a lot
of conflicting quotes, so maybe that quote was not as relavant as I
persumed. I'm sorry.

Techno _is_ pop in pretty much every other area of the world besides
North America, and we're not far behind.

I don't think it's possible to make broad statements such as [insert
genre here] does not compromise. The stroke you're painting is too
broad. If anything, the more popular something gets, the more
compromises are made to maintain or expand upon it.

Moby is doing whatever he wants in order to maintain or expand upon
his success. As much as I think him an over-opinionated pinhead, he
is electronic music's point man in North America and a lot more rides
on his ability to change to please than just his personal bank

St-Germain sounds like artsy coffee house music. Dunno if it is, but its
the commercial jazz-lite version of New Jazz, or whatever you call it. They
(he, I think. He's a lone french guy) have two videos out. Rose Rouge,
which is visually nice, and Sure thing, which is way better, IMHO, but a
very mello track. The video is pretty nice, also.

From: Nick Walsh [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yup yup, I can tell you from a very reliable source
that HDNone is talking a load of pap. I also know a
few dj's that are gonna be there but the line ups may
change, it's still being organised, so there's no room
for speculation. Things will be clearer soon, there's
no point wasting bandwidth now when the full details
will be displayed way before the event anyway...

Sorry to jump in on this, but no, HDNone is NOT simply talking junk. I
think his/her announcement was premature given the situation, but I can
vouch for the fact that this was a line up that was mentioned by individuals
involved in organizing the event in private conversations with other folks.
This was presented as a done deal, and I know that at least one of the
people mentioned has been talking about it to others, whether or not it's
been mentioned publicly.

I've been given a number of different reasons for why things were said and
why things were retracted and why other folks are not going to move on their
decisions and none of it is making too much sense to me. The press
conference may be interesting for a number of different reasons, but to go
to it and expect to hear anything definitive is...chancey at best. Even
when someone says, Yes, this is how it's going to be, you find out three
days later, Oh, X didn't have the authority to say that, and we changed
it.

I have a lot more to say, but I'm also going to give the organizers a chance
to come up with their story before I open up on folks.

2001-03-28 Thread Benn Glazier
St. Germain is pure class. Not going after the pop dollar at all. These
are pure session style muso's who love what they do and have combined the
smokin jazz/blues skills with Navarre who takes his minimalistic style to
production.

As you mention, Blue Note helped this record to get where it was, because
it simply has greater distribution power than FNAC.

Just because something ends up crossing over doth not make it teeny bopper
beats.

Hell, look at J's Pullover for instance.

The great part about this scenario is that it gave jazz enthusiasts an
interesting perspective with the house style beats, and vice versa. The
group has opened alot of doors between genres. I know a lot of my friends
who dig St. Germain are now listening to 'underground' jazz for want of a
better word, and jazz afficionados are now digging the dancefloor friendly
nature of some of the tracks. Hell, I even played them some stuff like
Nation2Nation and World2World (et al..) and they're getting into it.

On the side... here's a review I did of St. Germain live a few months
back http://www.inthemix.com.au/p/np/viewnews.php?newsid=980652978,99124,

2001-03-28 Thread beautiful individual
listened to dreamsequence in my local record store and, have to say, was
less than enthusiastic. would definitely not recommmend it - one of the
worst albums i've heard on tresor.

however, i can rave about archive's new (i think) off-shoot label neroli and
its 1st release - there's one track (by chateau flight, i think) that is in
a similar vein to stacey pullen's silent phase output. damn funky. damn
beautiful.

Now...has anyone heard the new Dreamsequence cd? I picked up
 the 12 inch
tre 159, and I really dig the Work Dat Body, but I hear the
 full cd has
 gotten good reviews. Anyone confirm?
Only read the review in The Wire, they're usually pretty much fans of
Tresor, but in this case they really gave it a bad review, saying it sorely
lacked ideas... I'd be really glad to see other points of view about it
before I buy it !

Hi peepz,

Tomorrow is my last day here at World Online Belgium. I thought I would be
here untill Monday, but they are letting me go earlier. So, bottom line is
that you will not be able to reach me at my [EMAIL PROTECTED]
address anymore. I'll probably stay on 313 by means of Hotmail so you can
reach me there. Listmembers who need to get in touch with me on a more
personal note probably already have my private mail and if not can still
contact me today.

I'm really looking forward to some rest, to getting all my stuff sorted out
and... to a prolonged visit to the States (NY, Detroit and maybe something
in between). So... any word yet on a place to crash for me and KJ in NY??

sorry, but i have to agree to disagree. imo, it's tired and cliched - with a
definite aroma of cheese. if it was produced 8 years ago fair enough. but it
doesn't sound that fresh to me - and i must emphasis, that this is just my
opinion.

compare it with the new stacey pullen album - as far as i'm concerned
there's no comparison. just because baxter is a detroit artist doesn't mean
i have to like his (latest) work. it's not to my taste.

2001-03-28 Thread stuffed bird
Hi,

A few weeks back I finally located and bought a track which has eluded me from
the very first moment I heard it featuring in Laurent Garnier's 'Laboratoire
Mix'. I only heard it once thereafter and that was also when LG was spinning at
10 days of techno.
I now have it and am playing it constantly :-)

I now also have a bit more info: it is a release on a UK label called Decay
Records, 'The Block EP', produced by AJ Sound, with my fave track called
'Basemental'.

I paid a rather steep price because I could not locate it in any database
(HTFR, Sonic Groove, etc) so I had to be really rare.

Any info? Jonny?

wicked track... just gets into an amazing bassy groove and then flows with
it - mixes a treat with Mauritzio's mix of Domina, but then doesn't
everything!!!

i can't remember who was behind AJ Sound or the Decay label. i think one of
those old school London techno faces had something to do with it tho - Terry
Mitchell mebbe, or praps John Kennedy. hmm, i maybe getting my faces and
names a bit jumbled.

anyways, there's at least one other 12 by AJ Sound on Decay. i think there
was one called Ambient Cod?!?!? similar to The Block, but not as good
imho. i've not heard anything from Decay in 3 or 4 years, so i think it's
safe to say that it's either defunct or taking quite a long break.

after running round trying to avoid rain and the sickening ibiza-pop-house
that seemed to be being played EVERYWHERE, it was hard for us not to just
bail before midnight. but the one thing that kept us there was the promise
of Public Enemy doing their first live set in the UK in years at 4 am...

so there we were at about 4.30, and PE were kicking out this killa version

so i guess you're not here to see this @*!ing s**t, are you? you just
waiting for paul van dyke to come on...?

 ladies and gentlemen, i tell you...in 12 years of clubbing/raving, i can

Arne,

Your friend may be intelligent, but his comments are pretty ignorant. UR is
too big because Jaguar is successful? What is there to be shocked about?
It's a great track. I'm more shocked that other UR tracks haven't received
the attention they deserve from those outside the scene.

As far as Mike running UR, he always has. I expect he always will. I've
heard rumors about some guy called Cornelius acting as label manager, but

I've always found most tag team lineups to be a
gimmick that promoters use to make their party look
special. I know people who've been in tag teams where
the promoter just slapped it together, and the
individual didn't even know the other dj. I would
think it would be difficult to create something unique
in a set when you don't know what the other person is
thinking.

Do you mean Liquid Room 2000, because he doesn't use
the 909 on the 1995 recording of the Liquid Room.

I'm wondering what it sounds like
 and how it compares
(sonically, complexity-wise, etc.) to Hawtin's use
 of it

I have a handful of live mixes where he uses the
909, and I find his style tends to be a little
groovier than Hawtin's pounding approach to it. I
don't really have a preference though, both use it
well from different angles.

(with the 909)? I'm wondering what it sounds like
 and how it compares
(sonically, complexity-wise, etc.) to Hawtin's use
 of it. Any info is
 appreciated. Thanks! = )

Re: [313] Mills and the 909

2001-03-28 Thread Jeff Sanford

I have a handful of live mixes where he uses the
909, and I find his style tends to be a little
groovier than Hawtin's pounding approach to it. I
don't really have a preference though, both use it
 well from different angles.

I agree. Personally I find Mill's use to be a little more fluid and
rhythmically complex than Richie's use of the 909, which seems to be more
intense but sometimes gets a bit blocky and heavy handed for me. But isn't
that the way it usually is between those two? While both move from techno
precepts, one plays to the organic dancer while the other plays to the
rational, conceptual, element of the brain...my 2¢, or should I say 3.5

cari lekebusch / joel mull in seattle?

2001-03-28 Thread Erin Swenson-Healey
Anyone seen either of these fine lads live? I've heard both of them do live
sets (via mp3/napster), but, never seen them live.

I'm a big fan of Millsesque variety banging techno, which from what I hear
Lekebusch is of the same sort. Can anyone verify this? Or will I be
subjected to some mellow intelligent funkiness?

Re: [313] i have to dj and i'm scared.

Come on, don't you think that's a bit harsh? We all
learn at our own pace, no? And the practicalities of
DJing often entail finding a way to work outside of
your normal parameters *if you want to get gigs*. Some
of us are less flexible on this point than others,
thus we DJ less often.

However, this whole discussion is better suited to
another list. Lots of people on this list don't DJ,
and don't care to read about it. I recommend
http://www.amtrakdjs.org I've been on that list for a
while now. I find it's rewarding to share what I know,
and learn from my peers. None of us know it all when
it comes to gear or technique. This is a silly
conceit. You will find a few progressive/trance DJs on
this list, but the discussions are heavilly moderated
to prevent genre wars. I got to the list with all my
techno/313 conceits, and I've become a lot more
tollerant of all the trance DJs in the world since I
joined. Many of these folks are normal people with a
similar passion for music that we have. Perhaps we
disagree with their taste, and maybe for good reason,
but we are not Right. Let's keep that in mind,
remember that these are mostly just people who love
music too, and try to treat everyone with a little
more decency than what we've seen here recently.

And could we please have just one discussion that
doesn't turn into an angry mob? Maybe we should talk
about that new Mills record? I liked what I heard of
it. The man keeps shifting and evolving. It's great.

Re: [313] Before you dis Moby....

2001-03-28 Thread M. Todd Smith
So do you call Ben Sims, SLS, Paul Mac, Mark Broom, The Cause and every
other producer who is currently producing tribal techno using the same sound
and sample base techno?

What would you call over 20 records by said producers being unequivocably
recognizable as a single track remixed 20 times. This is 'pop'; simulation
without thought or feeling; reduce reuse recycle; garbage. Sure they are
great tools but as an artist they are just other peoples ideas barely
reinterpreted. Much like me reproducing the work of my roomate and selling
it.

This is the techno equivalent of copying the alternative 'Seattle' sound.
Techno comprimises just like everything else. Get it straight it's a
business. Jeez let's remember Rich's DEFX909 was in HMV's top 20 for over 6
weeks, along with Brittney, Nsync and MOBY!!

Note: I am not a spokesperson for Moby and like I said earlier for the most
part none of us have ever met Moby personally, and have only his media
presence to judge him by. Judging him by what one person on 313 says is
like eating white bread because Uncle Sam told ya it was good for you (but
he didn't tell you it was enriched using cow's blood as a fortify agent did
he?).

Moby should pull his head out of his ass... hip-hop was great in the early
90's! There was more than just gangsta rap around. That's the problem with
his all-or-nothing sways. He did the same thing with techno and dance
music
in the mid-90s when he thought all of it was going the way of Aphex Twin.
He
started listening to the Seattle Sound and so he attempted to make a
punk/grundge record. It failed and his agent told him to get back to
making
music that his fans liked so he did. He will deny this though. I've seen
quotes a-pleanty from him saying that he was leaving techno because he
thought it was stagnent. He can try to deny it and say that his words are
being twisted around but after seeing a letter _from him to URB magazine_
saying why he was leaving dance music his denial of it just doesn't stand
up
anymore. Moby changes to please. That's why I don't consider Moby techno.
Techno does not compromise. Pop aims to please.

I mean last year on the main stage on
the
last night, the line up was Kevin Saunderson, Rolando, Derrick May, and
Richie Hawtin. How can you ever expect to come close to that every year
 without rehashing the same lineup?

Re: [313] Mills and the 909

2001-03-28 Thread Tom Mackenzie
Saw him on Saturday night. For the last 10 minutes of his set he was using
it, almost by itself, nothing mixed in. Very hard drum rolls, claps, crisp
high hats! F**king amazing. Completly different to Richie, most deffinatley
better but hey this is Mills we're talking about.

Haven't washed my hand since shaking his , I was touched by God! Never seen
a crowd in Wellington dance to a stand still in three hours, the number of
tracks he played in three hours made it feel like 6. I'm happy now I've
seen the best.
