Re: [313] Good artist steals?
They may well be doing that. Regardless, Eliot would not be (re: his intent, anyway) properly regarded as in support of pomo by any stetch. I certainly wouldn't argue that for Foucalt - neither would I put him in the same 'intentional' boat in terms of theory, either. Fun discussion, but it may be time to take it off-list (before we get told to :-) jeff Bekka wrote: > > Crit, Eliot himself basically WAS New Criticism - a subset of > > Formalism - and > > is a far cry from things normally associated (e.g., > > post-structuralism, etc) > > with pomo. Okay...I need an explanation for using a T.S. Eliot quote to support pomo ideology - or at least some kind of understanding of what discipline it is in which you feel you can make the application that it does. While I understand the sort of dialectical 'chain of events' which led to pomo theory in Lit. Crit, Eliot himself basically WAS New Criticism - a subset of Formalism - and is a far cry from things normally associated (e.g., post-structuralism, etc) with pomo. Just looking for understanding here, not one-upsmanship. You can hit me off list. Oh - for that obligatory on topic tag, let me suggest that the scuttlebutt about the new Rush Hour compilation is true. It's all that. Just got mine today and 7 tracks in, this is just fine fine stuff with enough interesting touches and influences to confuse category freaks. To my ears it works in 313, techno, IDM and maybe a few more. j3s wrote: > > Actually, the original quote (by TS Eliot) is "a bad poet imitates, a > > good poet steals." Good artist steals?
Actually, the original quote (by TS Eliot) is "a bad poet imitates, a good poet steals." And I think the implication is that, instead of copying an artist you like a lot, you go ahead and rip off whatever he or she did, then actually GO somewhere with it. It's kind of like "get over trying to be 'original,' everything's been done, just try to do it better." my 2 cents anyway... --- Tosh said: --- OH THE HUMANITY, OH THE HORROR Someone once said "good artists borrow, great artists steal." (OT) Help needed on a variety of things
Right, i'll cut straight to the chase. This won't apply to i'd say 99.99% of people on the list so i'll keep it to the point. Can anyone in the London area possibly lend me a bit of floor space over Easter weekend, primarily Thursday & Saturday nights & Monday (Early) Morning? (*) If so, i'd much appreciate it, and will gladly re-pay the favour next time there's a good line-up on up north in either Liverpool, Manchester or Leeds. I know it's (very) short notice, but i'm running out on options quickly. Also, can anyone confirm the rumour that Rolando is on at Ultimate Base on the Thursday & if there's a phone no for booking tix for Lost on the Sunday * The morning after Lost, or I'll be sleeping on a bench in Hyde Park Respond privately if yer can, Cheers In Advance, -- Tom Lawton ICQ:21604785 "Adventure without risk is Disneyland"

DJ Bone Peel Session Live on Radio 1
Hello All, I have been forwarded a few inquiries about me playing on Radio 1. Here's the scoop: On Wednesday, April 4th, 2001 I will be playing a live, 3 turntable John Peel Session on his Radio 1 show. The showtime is 22:00 hrs (5:00 p.m. Detroit Time) and will be streamed live on the BBC website (www.bbc.co.uk/radio1). For those who are not familiar with John Peel please take the time to do a little research on him. He is known in the UK as the "Mojo of London". My mission is to let the world know that we have much more to offer than just our past. I intend to represent Detroit's present and future. P.S. For those in the UK attending the Session in the Live studio audience: I've received word that they may have to move the Session into a larger studio due to the number of people attending. There is room for 50 but i think 100 are coming (biggest Session turnout?). THANK YOU for the support! backbone subject detroit _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Re: [313] busted turntables - Ypsilanti again
Ha! I got one better: House party I did in Ypsi back in 99' where some clown unloaded a fire extinguisher into the house. It took me a week to finish cleaning off my gear. The guy I was spinnin' with had an asthma attack from inhaling the stuff. Needless to say, when the cops and ambulance came, the party was over. There have > been consistant releases of electro music for at least four > or five years. Sorry, this was a misconception from me - this wave is very new to me, so I feel like it is new in general... Still, I am under the impression that there are moe records released in this vein these days, or that they get more exposure ? > The labels are a bit more obscure and smaller in scale than > say, Tommy Boy > or even Tresor, thus they have fallen below the radar of most > people. Why > the increased interest in 80s influenced music I'm not > sure...anyone care to > offer their hypothesis? Maybe that's because electro is an easy-to-access take on electronic music : it's electronic/techno-related music, but with melodies, it is structured like a pop song... plus, it uses sounds my generation is familiar with / nostalgic of, so it is kind of comforting even if it is unconscious... that is also why the treatment given by Adult is so interesting, the way they divert electro to turn it into something ironic / deviant, use it to comment on modern society... RE: [313] new zealand techno
Hi Emma, my name's Emma Kelly, I'm a masters student from Auckland University, NZ. I'm writing my thesis this year on location, identity and dance music (primarily techno) in Auckland and Detroit, and am currently looking for interview subjects. I'm going to be in Detroit for the Electronic Music Festival as well as visiting NY and Chicago late may early june and would really like to do some interviews with techno supporters. Preferably those who DJ, produce or promote, but die hard fans are always helpful too. If you'd prefer, I'm also doing interviews via email and would really appreciate the chance to interview some of you. So if you're interested please contact me ASAP. oo--> How about a NZ techno stage to showcase some proper techno from that part of the world like Micronism/Denver McCarthy and Clone??? That will be ace!! Have a nice week ahead! I wish i could make it to DEMF this year but See you guys if you are going to Sonar Your techno friend in Singapore, Collin PACfusion.com - Living Made Easy
