In The Mood For Technasia
I think Technasia are making some really great tracks - has anyone heard their album Future Mix, it's off the hook. I can't stop playing it (that and DJ T1000 mix-CD). I love the different influences and textures in the music - from classic Detroit sounds to retro rave sounds to tech-house - and the way the album has been threaded together using a loose radio show concept. There is also a subtle Asian influence (one of Technasia lives in Hong Kong, the other in France). Anyone else have any comments on this?

Re: [313] Lil Louis Out of Napster
to be honest, i would not really appreciate my music being distributed thru other channels than those i can monitor. i feel my music does not stop with the plain tracks, the whole presentation(titles, format(vinyl)) is essential for what i do.. besides that i like to keep a certain amount of control over em.. to know what people think about it as well as whose involved in the distribution of the item. It´s the same with tings like mix cd´s i like to be able to say no if i don´t believe in the concept.. besides that in the end the tracks r my property so its a matter of respect. every copy has been manufactured carefully and handled by the people i consider to b the best in the world in what they do... give the pressing plant and the mastering-company some respect and buy the vinyl so we can all get ahead in this industry, we really need ur support ..( respect to MPO, Pole at DM and Michiel at SSR, u make the record so much more than just the tracks..) When u r just a small artist things like napster keep ur music smal, no money to build my studio in what it should be and i still have to work 40hours 5 days a week and still run the label, do the artwork and stuff, step into the studio and all...this way i can never find the time to do more stuff, hope u can all feel this. maybe one day we will be really out there instead of those corporate boys...till then i guess i just have to wait for some free time and work 24/7. 154

give it up for the geist
metro area 3 is an amazing record, no-one else out there is making music like morgan geist and his crew - definitely unique. love the '80s retro feel to it. however, i'm sceptical about the latest daniel wang offering. the statement on the record that no samples were used in its making doesn't automatically mean it is better than sample-based offerings. a friend mine thought it could be described as cheesy carbaret house. the record's quirky sound means it will stand out from the current crop of deep house, but whether in 3 or 4 years time i'll still be listening to it is debatable, have doubts whether ot not it has longevity. it's no hi-tech jazz. aidan _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

Re: [313] Original v. Replica, Private v. Public
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: So what are the general benefits to the public of copying? It sounds to me that the benefit of copying is the unimpeded sharing of information. And what a grand, wonderful world that will be. ;) I can see that free music for everyone would seem to be in the public good. But where does this leave an artist? Unless there is state funding, artists would not receive any compensation for their work because the public interest in copying is paramount. In the unlikely event the U.S. government endorses such a socialistic ideology, how do we foster new art? Why should it be the government or even necessarily _anyone's_ burden to insure the fostering of new art? It will happen by itself. Creative people create; it's something within them that they can no more suppress than breathe. And while present and future technologies change potential revenue models for artists, their process of creation and appreciation hasn't been changed. If anything, it should be the artists who should look to find ways to tap into this appreciation that are new (and cooperative)... not the government in strongarming the populace to retain the methods that are old (and unenforcable). At this point, can artists only expect to make a living by performing? Or do they all need to find a day job? If established artists are less able to focus on their creations full time, does this proposal really act in the public good? Recording artists could revert to being paid to perform, lecture or teach; just as they have been for thousands of years. The only thing being rescinded is something that they only (relatively) recently received; something that they received due to the nature of the technology of distribution of the time. It wasn't feasible for ordinary citizens to duplicate records, nor until recently CDs. But that has changed, and the public has gained an important freedom because of it. Nothing can justify denying the public important freedoms. As Abraham Lincon put it, Whenever there is a conflict between human rights and property rights, human rights must prevail. Property rights are meant to advance human well-being, not as an excuse to disregard it. The genie has already been let out of the bottle. People -- once they learn how to copy something -- will continue to do so. Just like once presented with the option of an automobile we didn't go back to the buggy, or return to steam engines, or a thousand other technological advances that made some other way of doing a thing obsolete. All important social changes were brought upon us through the advent of some technology... and the internet and digital media are two such technologies that are fundamentally and irrevocably changing the way that humans exchange information. American capitalism and the U.S. constitution are essentially incompatible. American capitalism and the idea of intellectual property in 2001 are basically incompatible. Capitalism is primarily a property services based system. Tossed upon an electronic canvas where property loses its meaning -- where the concept that I can give someone something without me losing it, and they in turn can give it to everyone else in the world so that we all have the same thing... is anathema to any financial models that we've been accustomed to since as long as we can remember. And the thing is that this is a _good_ thing; something that should be strived for at every level. One person suffers a lack of income so that an entire society benefits, vs. one person getting rich while everyone else lies wanting? Which is more profitable for the individual and which more profitable for society? But then, the rich make the laws and hold the reigns on the media engines that attempt to indoctrinate the public otherwise... - Craig

Next up would be the appreciation of what we have.. like i said before, i think the format in which we present our stuff to the world (vinyl that is) is an intricate part of our product, and the whole package, artwork, soundquality, inscriptions etc are part of the thing we make, painting on canvas is different from painting on wood, and presenting our music in a mix makes the track different from presenting it in a certain order, or as part of a specific selection. I try to make a considerable effort to present the whole deal and hope u all can appreciate it as such! It´s not for nothing that every release i do gets a 3 months delay just to get the Pole touch and the same goes for the long struggle to get the print right, find the colors for the label, even the press-release sheet gets my full attention. availability is not important for me, i agree, but that´s not arrogance, it´s just about howfar my budget stretches. But what if vinyl was redundant?
I know its already been mentioned recently, but this url does point to a future where vinyl is redundant (at least functionally anyway). www.finalscratch.com And while I am a fan of 'the full package' maybe there are many who are not, It would be interesting to see what happened if labels released a full vinyl version with packaging etc. and a lower priced 'just the mp3s' option. Obviously this scenario is only feasible if technology like 'final scratch' really does work. I must admit i'm pretty sure I would pay for more music over more cardboard and shrinkwrap... But I may be biased becuase I just moved house and my back is still killing me from lugging all those discs about :) Steve Next up would be the appreciation of what we have.. like i said before, i think the format in which we present our stuff to the world (vinyl that is) is an intricate part of our product, and the whole package, artwork, soundquality, inscriptions etc are part of the thing we make, painting on canvas is different from painting on wood, and presenting our music in a mix makes the track different from presenting it in a certain order, or as part of a specific selection. Re: [313] Re: copyright issues [LONG]
I think it all comes down to the definition of is intellectual material personal property?. I agree with Tristan that in our current system of musical copyrighting, and declared intellectual property, we are all at fault for some degree of musical pirating or copyright infringement. This, however, may be the fault of the system that is trying to protect the artist (when in fact it only _really_ protects the record label from which it was copyrighted). Think about this: Back before songs were copyrighted, and music was considered property, songs were fair game. (I'm thinking right now of when piano and opera were the only thing around). If someone played a piece from a Mozart composition, everyone who heard it, knew it was Mozart, and thusly, when Mozart appeared to perform, he was returned with a large crowd who came to hear him play his own music. In the same vein, people in that era of musical performance would learn popular songs, and be able to learn from them, and sooner or later start composing their own. Following their understanding of popular music, these pupils would gain their own following, and be repaid with the same crowds to hear them play their own music. If I am singing a song to myself, and it just happens to be written by someone else, do I owe them for singing their song? I might think highly of them, because I enjoy their music, but am I in any form of debt to them (literally) because I am presently enjoying their music? I should think not. I wouldn't expect to be repaid by anyone for them singing my songs. In fact, I would love to be able to distribute my music freely, and have the only form of compensation be performances. I don't believe that you can sell intellectual property. I believe that you can sell entertainment, but that line is really rough. Would a CD be entertainment? Yes and no, but that's a different can of worms. We are not really arguing about whether or not artists should be compensated, rather - how they should be compensated, and how - in this age of information - we can regulate that compensation. In a perfect world, artists who use other artists music would promote its use, hence giving the original artist a chance to be compensated when performing. A viable solution would be to cut out the middle man, which in this case, happens to be the record label who is marketing and directing the sales of the recorded media. If you take away the sales of the media, you in effect take away the marketing of the record, but you can make that up through the promotion of other artists. This way you would still be able to draw a crowd to get compensation for your musical creativity. This is, of course, just my personal opinion, with many flaws, and much to work out, but I believe it is a better system than the one that we have. Cheers! Dennis From: Phonopsia [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], Craig Stodolenak [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [313] Re: IP issues [LONG] Date: Sun, 8 Apr 2001 05:59:11 -0400 Cyclone, Craig, Scott and RC all make some excellent points on this issue and I am so thankful this hasn't been reduced to the usual arguments. If there is one argument I am completely fed up with, it is this. No other issue can turn normally thoughtful people into mindless automatons - simply because they're offered something for free. The one thing that pisses me off the most is that most people do not give one sh*t about what it means to an artist when they download from Napster, and if pressed on this point cite rhetoric from artists who are fighting against major labels. My question is what does this mean to techno? No one ever seems to be talking about that. To Craig's well thought out and clearly articulated points, I don't see that you can draw the parallel from software to music while invoking the George Washington paradigm. Which is it? Do we honor the historical spirit of copyright, or do we evaluate things in a modern context? If we're looking at the modern world, these issues are new and unique, so the only standard we should be worried about is fairness - the principal on which these privileges were initially granted. In what other field of art or science is work routinely stolen with so many normal consumers jumping on the bandwagon simply because they can? There is no comparison. We can envision that film piracy may reach these levels in a few years, but I think the same arguments apply. Does an artist ever implicitly consent to having their work distributed through Napster? No. If they explicitly consent is it OK? Absolutely. I agree 100% that the power of the internet should be harnessed to distribute music in a more expeditious way. Napster is not that way. I think what troubles me most about Craig's post is that it invokes an array of principles in the name of justifying a network that operates with none. If we're really trying to be principled about this, shouldn't we say

For me personally, i do not feel the mp3 thing, personal i guess, i don´t intend to put audio clips up on the site, putting up a sound generator would be a more interesting option...not feeling the mp3 thing has got something to do with the uniqueness of vinyl, it cannot be copied so a more personal touch can be edited. all copies of my tunes have at one point been in my to small appartment and have been thru a very heavy quality check... when u get dm to do your mastering u can b proud of very copy! oh, and i also moved house a couple of times, have a pretty large collection and wasn´t to happy after that either.. even playing out hurts my back at times btw 154

Craig Wrote: freedoms. As Abraham Lincoln put it, Whenever there is a conflict between human rights and property rights, human rights must prevail. Property rights are meant to advance human well-being, not as an excuse to disregard it. cut American capitalism and the idea of intellectual property in 2001 are basically incompatible. In polite disagreement, you quote Lincoln from the 19th century to assert that later, in the 21st century, human rights must still prevail. Nearly any political structures or regimes in the world today celebrate true 'human rights', as it was understood by Lincoln. Just look at the brewing crisis between America (alleged home of the free) and China (alleged home of the unfree). Then remember that Lincoln was the Great Emancipator, and probably one of the kindest men to serve high political have ever lived (Cinncinatus excepted). But to extend his world view into the 21st century, a world full of rogue states, dormant superpowers and new kids on the block, is inconceivable. This arguement, so far on both sides, concedes that the present is different from the past. What the Internet challenges is, as you said, the economic system in which the recently globalized world participates in. And 'globalization' is most *certainly* the key to future economic systems. The world is fast becoming reliant on resources, many of which are found outside a country's own physical boundaries. Creativity, in the capitalist system is as Barlow said in the Wired article is both applied to the mental and physical world - nouns and verbs - manufactured goods and manufactured thoughts. The capitalist economy, arising out of the Industrial Revolution and using the IR's great power to vault itself into power, is no doubt one of the greatest portents of doom for this species. There is no indication that the 'global village' will wholesalely reject capitalism. It's kind of like the sweatshop arguments, but a whole different can of worms. In short, the moguls control information, even on the Internet. And they will seek to maintain their hegemony in any way possible - through policy or practice. If anyone is interested in issues relating to the globalization of society, I STRONGLY recommend reading Benjamin Barber's fantastic book Jihad vs McWorld. Tosh Wrote: The point is the world has suddenly evolved. Suddenly? This evolution has been about as quiet as the Industrial Revolution ;) If your main predatory enemy has just evolved a new way to eat you, you can either sit there and whine and say hey that's not fair you can't do that or you can evolve a counter-response. That's what pushes evolution in nature and innovation in capitalist systems. What I think you mean regarding nature - adaptation - is something humans are notoriously poor at facilitating. At least most humans. I beg to disagree, too, that a 'dog eat dog' model of the capitalist system appropriately addresses the system's real motivation - and don't forget it - PROFIT. Look at today's economy - at 1020est the Dow's back up 130. But selloffs and layoffs come from new on earnings. Since many (I'd wager more than not) stocks are falling short of earnings projections, (read: they're not as profitable as they claim to be), traders are dumping mid and large caps left and right. I think that Craig's eloquent description of a type of intellectual redundancy is the one thing that will chip away at the foundations of the entrenched global capitalist hegemony. That one can share information, creations and ideas yet not lose ownership of that information, creation or idea is tantamount to what capitalism was conceived to be by Adam Smith - a truly free market, with no interference and a level playing field. So much more to say, but I'd just be wasting bandwidth. Vince Woolums AOL IM: vincewoolums http://www.recordcollectorinc.com
The one hit wonders of techno/ where r they now?
hi 313'rs You always hear names mentioned like May, Atkins, Suanderson, Craig, etc in detroit techno. There have been so many other producers that have contributed to detroit tech with releases on compilations and one or two 12 etc. It just interests me that u dont hear much about these people. I guess the various names used by single artists doesn't help either. Anyway, my question is where r they now???!!! I'll start with a Planet E compilation called Elements of and experiments with sound released in 1994. Re: [313] The one hit wonders of techno/ where r they now?
I can get you started with a few obvious ones. I'll start with a Planet E compilation called Elements of and experiments with sound released in 1994. Mode Selector-F.Flowers Fanon Flowers is still around and kicking. I'm not sure that he's based in Detroit anymore. He used to be an Ypsi native. He's made all sorts of great hard techno records and wowed people at the last demf. I have one of his 12's on the konsequent label, and he used to run Mechanism Industries. Flexitone-G.Donald, B.Gillen I always thought Flexitone was just Brendan, but Mr Gillen is the main brain behind Ectomorph. G Donald, I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you. I'm sure people can help you out more, but it's really no wonder that people sort of surface and drop off the face of the earth. They get jobs, go to school, move out of the 313/248/810/734, have to sell their gear, get married, etc. There are countless reasons many great unknown producers put out one record and then just run out of time to make music. Dare I call myself even a good producer, I may be in the same boat when I head off to grad school in august : n8
give it up for the geist
metro area 3 is an amazing record, no-one else out there is making music like morgan geist and his crew - definitely unique. I have to pause and add my praise to the Metro Area project. All 3 in this series I consider must-haves, and #3 probably being the most unique yet. The mix of live instrumentation, while often (IMHO) tired and over-done by some cheesier deep house acts (forever striving to out-deepen each other), works on a whole different level with Metro Area. It's the spice, not the main course. The live flute w/ heavy reverb is just the perfect ingredient, you have to hear it to understand, but it's such a great compliment to the funky, bulging electronic basslines and electronic tom-tom beats. THis stuff can be mixed in a house set, an italo/electro set, and of course with new funky techno too. Metro Area 3 is one of the best domestics released in the US this year. PS - speaking of Italo, anyone else heard Penguins Invasion by Scotch? or know where I can get a copy on wax? This track is incredible... peace -- Matt MacQueen [EMAIL PROTECTED] archived radio shows -- http://macqueen.com/radio

Otto? It's been quite a while since i last talked to Natasja and Jeroen from Utecht (not Eindhoven :) They had some major setbacks. They were also very disappointed in the music industry and still have a complete album that never got released. When i spoke to them they were starting to work on new material, but i don't know if that ever happened. I hope we will hear from them again because they were very talented and had a unique sound. Some more releases: - The Dream Tec Album on U-Trax (using various names) - The Black Hole EP on U-Trax - E2L9 on Phoq U (a U-Trax sublabel) using the name Cray Emoticon Btw, i think Fanon Flowers' first release was also on Phoq U. The Sleeper EP as Inventions And Diamentions. RE: [313] Dj Heather
DJ Heather often makes the short trip up here to Minneapolis. She is usually booked @ South Beach (small club in Mpls.). DJ Mea also shows here often. Good to see that there is still a Minneapolis - Chicago DJ connection. I think that Alexander East is primarily responsible for that. minor techno
hey all, i'm looking for that minor sound. those minimal tracks with eerie, sad, minor strings giving them that unmistakenable feel.. i realized i just don't get to hear many such tracks, and so i buy only what i manage to find.. i gathered the collective knowledge of this list could help me with this 'techno educational' project... i'll list a few tracks so you could zoom in the style i'm after - mike wade - requiem (b1 on 'first breath' ep / archetype) jeff mills- if (all three 'if' on the if ep) hidden rivals - early days (on the early days ep. / brave new world) s.l. session - needle drama [sls' octave mix] (from 'remixes v1' / cycle) mistress barbara - my passion for you (a1 on '666 fvw' / primevil) dave clarke - parameter (on 'directional force' / sonic groove) these are all the tracks i could find in my box that follow this style... obviously a sad testimonial.. but i intend to fix that. recommendations will be highly appreciated... thanks, -- crisk
RE: [313] Dj Heather
Saw her play at Bugged Out in Liverpool about a month ago. It was, I think, her UK debut, and a really good house set. Unfortunatly a lot of the crowd just wanted techno, so the room wasn't too busy.
