Are you ready for the Final Scratch price tag of $23,000? http://www.wired.com/news/mp3/0,1285,47398,00.html has the details I would rather take my chances cutting dubs on the Kingston Dubplate Cutter. www.mixmachines.com They will probably be shipping in 6 months or so, and they are only $5000. Better yet I'll save my money to do something fabulous. Like treat my girlfriend to a vacation, or buy a car, chances are I can always just lug my records around in that now can't I. [313] techno-Indie/ Was Khan
Since these threads are wandering from techno towards Indie Rock, Was wondering what you all think of the Vincent Gallo album just released on Warp. For those not familiar, he's primarily known as an Indie Film actor, he also directed/produced the movie Buffalo66. Kinda strange to see an album out on warp from him, but it sounded pretty good in the record store- definitely closer to indierock than techno tho- any other suggestions on genre-crossing techno related stuff thats catching your ears? p On Tue, 23 Oct 2001, Geoffrey Richards wrote: > I'm pretty sure that the Khan who produced No Comprendo is from Germany. I think that Final Scratch opens doors for people. Take for example a dj/producer who doesn't want to have to spend $50 for each dubplate, doesn't have the cash for that nifty looking new vestax vinyl cutter, and doesn't have the connections to get their work published. What if their production work -- if played live--would mostly consist of hitting play on the hard-disk recording device? I think that this technology presents opportunities for more original music to be played out. Granted, I think that artists should be reimbursed for their work (ie should get paid for their mp3s or cds or records). But for the price of the final scratch (since I have a computer, and have some recorded music) I can play my music in the context I intended it to be played--on turntables for a crowd. -geoff >Be patient >Ever heard of the step by step program ? >we move slowly >first we imitate then we innovate > >But i'm not gonne tell you here how to lay down you creativity on a tool >it ain't all 'bout what's here now ;-) > >Mad'R > > > Mr. Woolums has taken the words RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH! > > How advanced is a piece of equipment that can finally do today what >certain > > Detroit Djs could do 12 years ago? > > Where is the progress in TALENT? Yes, I must agree. The broken beat stuff is really where some of the best jazz leaning sounds are coming from. Seiji (in all of his guises), Nubain Mindz, Mustang, and on and on. Re: [313] 1-900-GET-KHAN
Alright, since I work for Temple Records, Khan's old record store here in NYC, I should set the record straight somewhat. Air Liquide is Khan's brother, Cem. Khan is responsible for Bizz OD, Super 8, Cube 40, Captain Comatose and a million other things. His real name is Can (pronounced "Khan") Oral (pronounced "Oh-raal"). He's a Turk, originally from Cologne, who emigrated to the US years ago. His brother Cem still lives there, and was the one responsible for opening up the shops in Cologne. Khan lives in New York now. He opened up and used to own Temple Records back in 95. His music is very eclectic, from early minimal house and acid to trip hop. Nowadays he's doing a peculiar mix of psychedlic rock and minimal techno. Good stuff, fun and trashy. e > From: Holly MacDonald-Korth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2001 09:12:44 -0600 > To: "'Eric Scuccimarra'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, "Batory, > Jason"<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, "'FC3 Richards'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Cc: "'313'" <313@hyperreal.org> > Subject: RE: [313] 1-900-GET-KHAN > > aren't walker and khan air liquide??? > > look for stuff out as air liquide... i have a killer 2x10 from about 5 years > ago... > > -Original Message- > From: Eric Scuccimarra [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Tuesday, October 23, 2001 7:30 AM > To: Batory, Jason; 'FC3 Richards' > Cc: '313' > Subject: RE: [313] 1-900-GET-KHAN > > > The Khan who produced for DJungle Fever also produced as Bizz OD, which I > believe is the name that most of the DJungle Fever releases are under. Mark's stuff and on the other side of the world, the West London/Broken Beat stuff are the most promising jazz/electronic hotbeds to me. If we're still talking "techno" and jazz, has anybody mentioned Jamie Hodge (Born Under a Rhyming Planet)? He'd probably argue that there isn't a lot of common ground between them, but in my opinion, Jamie managed to find some. -d At 10:29 AM -0400 10/23/01, Ian wrote: on 10/23/01 7:26 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: How about Mark de-Clive Lowe?? [313] Red Planet (where there's a Will...)
> > Who is this? The Martian a.k.a. Will Thomas. While the actual physical identity of the spirits involved remains classified at a fairly low-priority level (one transmission has it DJ Rolando also contributes to the series), it appears likely that humanoids will be posing this question for many earth-years to come. For what it's worth, protagonists in (English) literary texts with the name of 'Will' go back 6-7 centuries (e.g. 'Long Will' in William Langland's long poem, 'Piers Plowman'). This lends a precedent to matters here: these protagonists are often dogged, relentlessly determined individuals who simply refuse to give up--though they may have to go to hell and back to achieve their aims. Power is their middle name. Through the coming together of Detroit techno artists on the Red Planet to create timeless sonic messages through sheer force of 'Will', we have our clearest answer to all the 'Doubting Thomases' who plague daily existence. We have 'Will Thomas'--proof positive of the sustaining, transformative power of this electronic soul music: true, unbastardized 'trance' that shapes a new destiny for all those open to its call. Join us in our mission. Cheers, Wes - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

after some time off i have a renewed interest in going out in detroit and finding something interesting to listen too. I used to go to motor quite often, but i have heard that it is truly a dead club with no flavor left. so i would love some recomendations on something to do that is somewhat challenging or interesting. some have recomended porterstreet and the lager house to me. what are people's thoughts on the two venues. also is there a website for their upcoming events. -sam __ Do You Yahoo!? If you like the latest Morgan Geist 'Super' then try out some of the stuff on the UK Nuphonic label. Faze Action's album of a few years ago sounds similar. RE: [313] 1-900-GET-KHAN
Well, as far as I know there are two different Khans out there. One is a group of 3 guys producing "tribal house" and the other is a New Yorker, who has also produced under the moniker Captain Comatose for Playhouse. The latter just released an LP on Playhouse: Khan - No Comprendo, which I really like mainly because its quite different to everything else at the moment - a mix of indie, lounge and, well, techno - lots of guest vocals including Jon Spencer, yeeha! So I would recommend this, however I don't know if it's the same Khan you have, or think you have. ??? bad banjo use??? maybe some people should try other instruments...how about a hard acid track with an accordian making the bass line. that would be tight. maybe a washboard for percussionary enhancement (is that a real phrase???) oh, and a picalo to use during the break down... damn, i am going to be rich AND famous with these ideas jeff > -Original Message- > From: M. I just put this record on hold at the record store (i'm broke) and i really enjoyed a few of the tracks on here. i was wondering if there are any other good Khan records out there that sound like this. i heard he used to do some of the work over on the DJUNGLEFEVER label, which is the farthest thing from this release since everything i have heard off of that label has been hard acid (good too!)... and since i am thinking about dying and everything because of this funeral music thread i was thinking that i would probably play soemthing more ambient. Krueder and Dorfmeister comes to mind. I absolutely love the dub CD on the K & D Sessions. i think i would have that played...if i was to be loud and obnoxious like everyone knows me as, i would have to go with Three Oh Three by Speedy J on probe...my favorite track... but i'm not dying... jeff - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Right, but for some reason, I found this kind of "light" in comparison to things like the Innerzone or Cinematic Orchestras. It seemed to me that only the soloist had any real understanding of jazz. La La Land reminds me of Flash in the way that the naration is more documentary... like he's just an observer of the going's on around him and he's making comments along the way.
