Got to be Hood. If anyone lords this genre, I would say it was him.

Jacek Sienkiewicz is also worth a mention, and all that Ifach stuff too.

sounds like you're after stomp the beat. one of two records larry heard did
for gherkin. the only place to find it is on ebay, or gemm.com. expect to
pay a lot.
i have a spare copy of his other gherkin release--1990. i'd swap 1990 for
stomp the beat if anybody's interested.

If you like The maurizio stuff you would also like some of the
Rechenzentrum, in particular the John Peel Sessions on Kitty Yo. You may
also like most of the label Episode...it has some deep dubby stuff that aint
overkill...done really well...you might want to listen to Episdoe 3 it's a
Villalobos that is pretty sweet indeed...

RE: [313] Kevin/Carl/NYC

2002-03-18 Thread Grammenos, Peter

i was there w/ 313'rs Mark Flintoft/Diana Potts and had as bad an experience
as you had! Luckily we didn't have to pay to get in but that didn't help
much. a friend of mine who didn't get in for free actually got his money
back at the door around 3:30 after complaining to the promoter for about 10
minutes.

i heard they overbooked the club, kevin was in town though, sitting in his
hotel room. he was also supposed to do a set at groovejet for free on
saturday but i never made it over. didn't want to risk another no-show!

very, very disappointing night ;(

Even though very little information was posted about Kevin Saunderson and
Carl Craig spinning at the newly revived shelter club in NYC on Friday night
some folks found out about it and showed up. The shelter is the new home of
the legendary Phazon sound system that used to be at Twilo. I had high
expectations for hearing both Kevin and Carl abuse this system. Since
Shelter is a multi-floor club, there were several other party's going on
simultaneously. There seemed to be a lot of confusion throughout the night
and the Kevin/Carl party actually got moved to another floor at 2:30am I met
Mike Doyle www.burnlab.net and we happened to run into Richie who stopped
by. He was as confused as us about where to go.
By 4am, after spending about an hour and a half in the Phazon space hearing
drum and bass Mike and I came to the conclusion that neither of these guys
were going to play. There were quite a few disappointed and irate people
walking around feeling the sting of spending $25 to get in grow as the night
wore on. I left at 4:15am managing to suffer through an evening where Shades
of Jae was the ONLY musical bright spot.

Does anyone know what happened?

Well, maybe. But he's firmly situated now as a payload in the starmaking

I'm totally in awe of anyone who makes great pop music. The new record
for me is pretty weak to my ears though, and unfortunately pretty weak
in ways that won't prevent it from being a hit.

it's the right mix as well!

So how much is that record going for these days?

I'm surprised that Circuit Breaker/Overkill isn't seen as the big

On the minimal tip, I definately have to give Todd Sines his props. Charles
Noel is right up there. Two hard working and very talented djs!

Todd has released tracks on minimal labels such as Peacefrog, 21/22 Corp.
and Perlon. My new minimal master! One my fav tracks being "Intrusion" on
the Null EP.

2002-03-18 Thread Cyclone Wehner
I think it's too cynical to say that Luke is doing it for 'the money'. I
think there is a wide perception that techno - or more importantly, what is
known as 'techno', ie 'hard music' - is in need of a rebirth and it seems
that 'techno' artists as diverse as Slater and Stacey Pullen and Jeff Mills
are going in different directions, even Juan Atkins/Model 500 with that
cyber era R&B song Rain. Slater's work has personality in it. I am not a fan
of this new work (though I loved Wireless), but I respect what he is trying
to do. He's now signed to Mute as opposed to Novamute too.

And then of course there's the even more obvious suspects (Maurizio I
wouldn't classify as strictly minimalist, tbh) - Dan Bell and Robert Hood.
"Losing Control" by DBX (Dan Bell) and "Minimal Nation" by Robert Hood have
always been kind of like the Old Testament of minimal techno to me. Other
producers like Mike Inc (his Studio One series), Memory Foundation, Claude
Young ("Updating the Existing Systems") have made some nice minimal techno
as well.

Go to groovetech.com and search under "dbx", "robert hood", "m-plant",
"accelerate" - listen to some of the tracks you get back. Is that the sort
of thing you're after?

Minimal techno, done well, sometimes sounds to me like purely distilled funk
- the singular essence, at a purity where even a trace dosage can be
fatal... :)

2002-03-18 Thread Kim B
I have been getting a lot more into minimal techno sets of late and recently
had the pleasure of listening to Pantytec here in tdot.
What a wikkid set these guys threw down. So much funk. Zip and Sammy Dee
did answer the question (which was brought up by a friend of mine recently)
that minimal techno is way may more interesting when there is the element of
funk.

[313] Live PA's

2002-03-18 Thread Poivrenoir
Well,
I have seen a fair share of Live Pa's, some creative, and some very very
lame. The Aux 88 PA set at the first DEMF was dis-jointed, but kool. Like
long stops in between songs. But that might've not been their fault. Then
the next year I saw DJXDJ, and I thought it was s boring. 2 Lab tops.
Wow. I think the problem with most Live Pa's, is that it seems not very
thought out. And I am not sure why that is. I would have to say that the
most exciting Live Pa's I've ever seen were hardtechno/hardcore ones. Like
Laura Grabb from Detroit. Before she goes abroad I have heard she can put
weeks into her sets. It's hardcore, but it's layered, and there is real work
going on. Fred Maniaks, Crystal Distortion, for example. I mean to be a
FreeParty or even in an arena with one of these Lives going, the whole place
going nuts. I think the earlier comment about not being able to see anything
but a dj perform live is, well that person's opinion. I like both. But
being a dj, and an artist are 2 different things. I know alot of dj's feel
they have to release records of their own, to be seen more serious. But it
doesn't mean they are the same thing. Anyways, that's just my thoughts

The Mark Bell productions in Bjorks Vesperine were quite dirty, glitchty,
clickly etc whereas Gez Varley's rather superb Bayou Paradise was very deep
techno, lots of echo, reverb with minimal and clean production. It would be
interested to see the work they would put together as a team.

What kind of Dj set would they likely play i wonder too ?

2002-03-18 Thread Ana Dane

a quick review, for those in the nyc area- party out of bounds, last
thursday, with metro area was really nice. good old disco, the sound was
very clean (as were the very shiny fashionista crowd)...it was refreshing to
see the place so packed. unfortunately, the new york curse of no-dancing was
in effect, as almost everyone was just standing around. maybe they didn't
want to get sweat on their designer clothes. if you're in the area, be sure
and check out the next round on april 11, at APT.

also, got some new stuff from dL that is well worth seeking out. the funky
italo style macho cat garage - muffler strut was excellent, and stinkworx -
todas las noches is a bit more mellow but still a nice listen.

Wow, does this mean they are back together? From wath i have heard they both
stopped working together because of some not-so-pleasant-things. Mark Bell

got me fred wesley & the j.b.'s 'damn right i am somebody' recently and
was
blown away by most of the tracks (only 'blow your head' i've heard a bit
too
often already). i can see now where some of the rhythms of certain dance
mania
tracks come from. 'i'm paying taxes, what am i buying...' has some
proto-techno passages imo :) and the spoken word pieces in this track are
very moving. now i ask myself if this is all genuinly original stuff (was
this
album a milestone at the time?) or if there exist some other funk bands
from
that era (1974) or before that have done records in a similar vein and the
same spirit (southern spirit?)?

You should check out the funk music from era 1970 Africa (Nigeria
primarily) like Tony Allen and Fela and the Africa 70. Amazing and, dare I
say, sometimes better than the JBs. You can get lots of this stuff on
compilations so you can hear a wide variety that was being produced back
then.

It comes down to subjective opinion, but back in the early 1990s "The Four
Cornered Room" on GPR was a pretty good "idm" album - I think "In From The
Night" (a PAS track) is pretty good too, although very derivative of
Millsart's "Step to Enchantment"...

Yea, I agree. One thing I've noticed is that I get more into live sets
when people make stuff more on the fly instead of just playing their
actual tracks live...

There are a few people I can think of off the top of my head that play
almost nothing you've ever heard before when they play live and it works
really well. Kid606 is one who comes to mind for always putting on a
good live show.

And then throughout the mid 70s and late 70s, as the majority of musicians
from the JBs (Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Bootsy Collins) fell under George
Clinton's direction and become Parliament/Funkadelic. When Bernie Worrell
was thrown in with them, P-Funk was created. Eventually P-Funk got into that
elevator with Kraftwerk, and begat techno... so the development from James
Brown through to Detroit techno was carried out, in no small part, by those
musicians.

I'd also back up the recommendation of Maceo Parker's album, "Us", even if
only for the stunning track "Soul of a Black Man". But all in all I
generally prefer the George Clinton years to the James Brown years...

extremely busy working loads of instruments and bopping along to his groove

It's always easier to get people involved in a live set if there's a
vocalist.
I find that even some banter on the mic can help draw people in.

As for stage presence, when you talk about other genres -- jazz comes to
mind
-- someone like Diane Krall is a bigger draw than an all instrumental
group.
The communication is up front and direct, coming from the human voice.

You have to work harder to connect with an audience if there's no vocal
presence. It's not that it can't be done, it's that you have to work at
it.

And the stage presence isn't always that important. Fred Giannelli had
people hooting and hollering, even though his stage persona is of a statue
wearing a miner's lamp ;-)

You probably already know this, but the JBs were James Brown's backing band
(hence the name) and so that sound evolved through the sixties and early
seventies. The peak of that sound is arguably the period over '68-'71. Check
out the 2 compilations - are they called "Funky People" 1 & 2? - of James
Brown related stuff from around then: Lyn Collins, Marva Whitney, Brown
himself, Bobby Byrd etc. Other strong JBs albums include "Doing It To Death"
(with the storming title track) and "Food For Thought", or Maceo's "Us",
which is basically the JBs under Maceo Parker's direction. By the time of
"Damn Right..." other bands like Parliament/Funkadelic - where the likes of
Bootsy Collins, Wesley and Parker were to defect -had picked up the funk
baton.
