I know Nick Craddock who also played. Apparently it was a good night.

I hear there are a few big nights coming up. Blake Baxter the next, and
then one in June. Not sure whether I can disclose who yet.

Re: [313] Re:[313] who are the good guys was Moody DJs - Dave Clarke/Surgeon

2002-04-19 Thread Nicole Slavin
Absolutely!
i've seen the same dj chatting with the crowd and joinging in the party one
time, and packing up his stuff and hightailing out the door another night.
as i said before, some of you are making a really superficial judge of
character. unless you know the person, and i mean KNOW. not having seen them
play some times, or having chatted to them once or a couple of times. i mean
been their mate, had to rely on them in a time of need or something like
that. if this is not the case then you cannot slander someone's character
when you don't know what the hell you're on about. i have seen said dj a few
times. some good and some bad, based soley on the music. i've never known
his demeanour to ruin a night!
perhaps people should stick to what they DO know - the music and make their
judgements accordingly.
no humour i'm afraid, but i'd be pretty pissed if someone was bitching
about me when i'd done nothing to them. apart from that, it's just plain
unprofessional.

DJ QBurns was downright ecstatic while hanging about after one of his gigs,
Claude Young came down from the decks and hugged a bunch of us... I don't
think it's a question of bad vs. good DJ, it's more likely a question of
bad vs. good day/mood. Sometimes bad moods make you play better but you
still might not want to hang about because you're still pissed off. Sure,
some people have dispositions that might rub the majority of the public the
wrong way but if you know this then why expect different. There are so many
factors that may make up a particular performers mood before, during and
after a gig - have they been paid yet, how was the flight/drive, have they
eaten in the last 8 hours, how much sleep have they gotten, do they have a
lift back to the airport, did they have one to the gig? The list goes on
and on - so next time a DJ/musician is in a pissy mood think about these
things and then you might not take it so personally when they brush you off
or don't smile at you or tell you to f*ck off. Not like it's an excuse -
but it could go far to explain some actions.

Just to nip this one in the bud, Dave Clark (note the missing "e" at the

Dave Clarke isn't also lurking like tons of others. Who knows?

Should we add this to the FAQ? ;)

Um, folks ...

2 years ago on Queen's Day in Amsterdam, I saw Sven Vaeth and Dave Clarke
DJ back-to-back at a huge (7,000+) Awakenings party in the Westergasfabriek.

It was one of the greatest parties I've ever been to in my life.

Both men played outstanding sets of brutal, hard-as-nails pure Techno
that I eat up like candy. (Ob313: Sven played "Jaguar". Respect.)

Afterwards I posted to this very list about it, and made special mention
of how great Dave's set was.

Shortly thereafter I got a nice e-mail from Dave Clarke himself thanking
me for the kind words. Respect.

Yeah, a buddy of mine has one of those... he seems to like it a lot. Pretty
handy to have if you have to walk very far at all. They're a bit on the
pricey side for myself (about twice as much as a standard Odyssey case), but
it would sure be nice to have one. It would be perfect for flying if you
take your records with you as a carry-on.

[313] where?

2002-04-19 Thread Maarten Baute
Hi,

I always put my records in my boxes in geographical order (strange, hé?), so
this is why I have these questions:

1) Is Fred 'kooky' Giannelli from Detroit?
2) Terra Deva, who are they, and where are they from?
3) Osunlade? Where is he from?
4) Terrace = rotterdam ? Just got me that "In-Motion" record.. great classic
stuff.

Thanks,
Maarten

just for clarification I am talking about Laurent below (not Common Factor).

I didn't have the religious experience you did hearing him at All Access, but
it was a strong set. Definitely much better (and more diverse) than what he
played at the DEMF festival -- which I thought fell a little flat and too
"samey" for my tastes, too squeaky clean. His set at the Planet E afterparty,
by comparison, was definitely more bumpin and funker, and he covered more
territory musically which is something I like in a DJ. (Though Shake may be
the master at
"breadth-of-selection-in-a-single-set-that-you-can-still-dance-to" category).

Amazing party. I think the highlight at for me was the short and sweet live
track(s) by KDJ, lit in purple and hidden behind the screen. I'll never forget
that track 'sexy little momma'... even though I only heard it once, gives new
definition to the word FUNK. I read in _Straight No Chaser_ that there were
very limited white labels (just labeled J.A.N. apparently?) of this track.
Anyone get one?

Also Orin Walters DJ set upstairs (very late) I thought was pretty outstanding.

i know this isn't proper list etiquette, but you are WRONG!!! ;)

laurents set at all access was incredible. in a brief 2 hours he took the
crowd across the entire spectrum of house and techno. yet it never felt
rushed or crammed in. at the point when he finished, i would have given my
right arm for another 2 hours. fortuneately, common factor was amazing as
well. i don;t think i exhaled until 6am.

you don't have to be happy-smiley-nice

what you do have to be is courtious and kind to everybody. and dave clarke
appears to be neither. i must be his momma's fault.

i must say i'm surprised to see this discussion as when DC played adelaide
earlier this for
our Big Day Out festival, he not only came back for an encore and danced
around by
himself behind the decks, he also jumped down and shook hands, signed
autographs and
chatted with people for a little while after his set...

maybe he just likes the festival vibe...

but what about someone like surgeon - when i saw him he djed with zero
visual emotion, in
fact i'd say barely acknowledged the tiny crowd, but was i complaining... i
don't think so...

2002-04-19 Thread seth redmond
Sorry, but I can't agree. At the end of the day DJ's are only people who
play records and whilst they do get the odd bit of hero-worship, they have
no right to act like a prick to their contemporaries or particularly their
fans. His music shouldn't be allowed to apologise for his personality. Look
at Bone. I've seen him play some of the hardest, darkest sets I've ever
heard, but he's still the nicest guy you could hope to meet. (and also heard
David holmes play a load of really happy cheerful funk records whilst
sporting a face like a slapped arse tsk. DJ's eh?)

oh, and pisser about Alton Miller. I saw him at (I think) Basics a couple of
years back and he was pretty ace...

Re: [313] PIETER K- LA ANGELS -the first hit of my summer!

2002-04-19 Thread Moe Fuzz
I think Pieter may have some techno tunes on his forthcoming album on
Breakbeat Science. I know he went out to NYC to work with the same vocalist
and finish his album. When Pieter and John Tejada played live together,
Pieter played some brand new techno tunes he made from the NY sessions. So
I'm assuming they'll be on the album or perhaps they'll pop up on his
label Metaformal or on Palette.
The two downtempo tunes "It Could Have Been You" and "Un Amour Fou" are
the ones I'm excited about.

From: Yair Etziony <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

this track (palette 20) is a mega a hit. with its flamnco feel its just
what we need here in this medetrenian summer.
simpley a great tune and the B- side is a great complex track with a female
vocal.

Laurent Garnier played Planet E's All Access party last year. And slew all

Laurent's set was pretty good for a while, but I was bored after the first
hour. I thought his set was way too long. Common Factor and Carl Craig
were more interesting imho. I wish Carl's set was a little longer

When I first read this interview question I thought it was a little strange
(where did they hear that???) Interesting reply as well!

Clubcharts: Is it true, that you always check your audience by walking through
the crowd
(incognito or not), before you start your mix-session, to see what kind of
people there
are? (and to see which tracks the people obviously like dancing to?)

Dave Clarke: I think it's rude for an international dj to turn up 1 min before
they play, it
shows lack of respect for the dj the club and the lifestyle, very very
occasionaly that
happens to me due to late plane arrival and it feels horrible. I like to hear
the dj before
me and see how the crowd is reacting.

2002-04-19 Thread Gary_Girard

I understand your point, and I'll admit that it is nice to see a DJ
enjoying the party vibe.
My point is that it isn't a good reason not to go and hear a DJ. It's not
the most important thing.
Other than the bad attitude D.C is an excellent DJ.
This has got me thinking about other DJs that don't show much emotion
whilst playing. Surely there are a few Detroit DJs that have been brought
up on the mean streets and aren't all smiley and jumpin around when on the
decks? I don't remember Rolando being particularly jolly!

Agree..i remember a fwe years back when Sven was playing
Mazzo in Asmterdam on sundaynight. the place was pretty packed
and he played form 00.00 till 07.00 in the morning. When i enterd
Mazzo and went to bar for a beer a found myself standing next a
rather little person (and i am not so tall myself:) with a funny
haircut, turned out it was mr. Väth himself. He just stood at the
bar orderd a beer and we had a chat about the night. We talked about
how he liked playing clubs like mazzo, coming early to a club to
catch some of the atmosphere before playing and he bought me beer.
Then he went of to spin few tunes..bought him a beer back later on..
Had a very good night..and Sven couldn´t do wrong with me anymore:)

Hi,

I believe you guys are missing an important aspect here. We are talking
about PARTIES here. Parties are supposed to be fun and the DJ should just as
much be a part of the party as the crowd is.
DC clearly is not. He acts as if it's only a job he has to do and although
it IS for him, it should be more than just showing up in time and dropping
his records.
Sven's attitude is not about "look at how cheery I am". It's about partying
together with the crowd and showing respect to the crowd by not only
dropping the best tunes in the best possible build up (and making them go
totally mad in the process), playing for as long as the clubowner lets him
and by being on the floor before his sets, checking the atmosphere out and
talking to people, even remembering when he has spoken to them before and
about what!
We are still an underground scene, where the "stars" don't need to develop
arrogant attitudes and need bodyguards and all that nonsense.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Rex in Paris once where Sven was playing.
When I entered the club, he was standing at the bar and he approached ME
asking surprised what I was doing here since I was from Holland where I'd
spoken with him at a party months before. He knew that!! He immediately
introduced me to Terence Fixmer who was there too. Later he played a great
set in that strange DJ booth with the windows open. It was so funny to see
the three lines thick of trainspotters standing there the whole time.
A couple of weeks later I saw a documentary on Dutch TV about Dave Clarke.
There he was also playing at the Rex. There you saw him sitting backstage
the whole time before his set, by himself, looking as if he was waiting for
a dentist appointment. When he came on he had no idea what the DJ before him
had been doing, then the windows went shut Now there's a guy who must
really love his job.
A job that 1000's of others would kill for.

On the subject of the Rex, if there's one DJ who constantly switches places
with Sven on my most favourite list, it's Laurent Garnier...

Respect to Nicole! Couldn't have put it better myself.
If a DJ can DJ well, but they don't dance around or smile or say "Hello" to
you, then what difference does it make? Surely the only thing that matters
is that they turn up on time & then proceed rock the venue with excellent
records and top-notch mixing.
Dave Clarke has attitude and it comes across in his DJ style - that's the
man. It's what makes the DJ is is. He likes & plays brutal, hard, dark
techno.

[313] Down Low Records

2002-04-19 Thread Mike Taylor

Hello,

I just wanted to let people know that they should be on the look out for
some of the upcoming releases on Down Low. I received a CDr of Arne
Wineberg's next 12" and it is top notch. Arne's stuff is just deep and moody
Detroit Techno with excellent strings and percussion. It is due in August.

Also, KJ aka The Moderator has a 12" on the way as well, it is currently
available on White label. The Moderator record is more of a Detroit'y
minimal juno strings/bass line and 909 work out, an excellent mix tool. My
only disappointment is that there is a short purpose-maker style track that
should have been longer than the minute long snippet; It had the potential
to be the most driving cut on the record. This record is due in May.

Currently available is Muffler Strut from Macho Cat Garage. This mysterious
Hague-based duo have recently released a 12" on I-F's Viewlexx records. If
you are looking for VCO-based sleazy analogue grooves, Muffler Strut is a
good bet. It is very tracky, but the analogue hook is strong enough to hold
your attention.

Todas Los Noches is the new 12" by $tinkworx. Although this 12" actually
appears on Marsel Van Der Weelen's Delsin imprint I will mention it here as
well. Probably the strongest thing he/they(?) have done. If you are looking
for records on the Nu-Italio tip, this 12" is well worth looking into. for
more info: http://delsin.org/28dsr.html

Take care,
mt

no matter your own opinion on the matter, don't post. Follow the rules of
the list or leave please. If I cared enough about the world around me, I
wouldn't be relying on second-hand news on a techno mailing list.

i can relate this post to 313 in two notes :P

Re: [313] 3 chairs

2002-04-19 Thread Fred Heutte
Plastic People is on Curtain Road just off Old Street in north London.
I think the neighborhood would be described as sort-of-Hoxton with a
pinch of Shoreditch. No tubes really close by, the nearest are Old Street
and Liverpool Street.

Curtain Road is rather, erm, unprepossessing, and you have to look
carefully for the entrance at 147-149, then go downstairs. When I was
there in December 2000 it was a nice little club with a bar room and
a slightly larger music room and, biggest surprise of all, a really
*serious* sound system. Someone (Tom or Hillie from uk-dance) told me
it cost 50,000 pounds and I wouldn't be surprised.

I had a very nice time with the Plastic People crew and heartily
recommend the club.
