[313] House songs so good they make you cry....
I weep for house a little easier: -Mr. Fingers: Can You Feel It -That Farley Bootleg of Candi Staton's "You've Got the Love" that is impossible to find -Herbert: It's Only -Soha: Les Enfants Du Bled -All of both NWAQ's on Delsin -Ron Trent: I Feel the Rhythm -Norma Jean Bell: Dreams -DSL: Soothe Your Soul -This damn track that I can't get ID'd: 1:42:40 into Seiji's set on the Betalounge from 7-26-01 -...and Ayro's "Let This" is creeping up there for me (OK, so maybe it isn't house). ;P Tristan --- http://www.mp313.com <- Music http://www.metrotechno.net <- DC techno + more http://www.metatrackstudios.com <- DC DJ/Production studios http://phonopsia.tripod.com <- Hub [EMAIL PROTECTED] <- email - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

There are two versions, "Detroit: One Circle" and "Explain the Style", both on this 12" (Metroplex 025). Agreed, it's one of Hood's best (if not the best) and one of the best Detroit Techno tracks ever made. Circa '95 if I'm not mistaken. [313] Damn, been on this list since the beginning and finally started a good thread!
Haha. I've been on this list since it started, and finally started a hot thread! Hey, I just posted this thread like an hour ago...look at all these responses! Keep them coming. Alot of them are familiar to me and also favorites...especially the soofle/choice cuts, galaxy to galaxy, the deepest shade of techno comp, ocean to ocean, ...yeah, oldschool FNAC ludovic navarre tracks...these are some great toons people. Some are new to me..I'll have to have a listen. Sterac "sitting on clouds" on 100% Pure definately does it for me... Model 500 "I wanna be there" almost does it for me... Rob Hood's Minimal Nation *should* bring on the tears, but it's too detached to do that ;-) Dr. Attaman (I'm a real medical physician now, finally graduated) :) - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm curious about that... any names to recommend ? Everyone needs to hear the following old electro tracks: Pretty Tony - Fix It In The Mix Freestyle - Jam The Box Freestyle - Don't Stop The Rock Planet Patrol - Play At Your Own Risk Captain Rapp - Bad Times Garrett's Crew - Nasty Rock Twilight 22 - Electric Kingdom A few other classics off the top of my head: Afrika Baambaataa - Looking for the Perfect Beat Hashim - Al Naafiysh (The Soul) Sexual Harassment - I Need A Freak The Unknown DJ - 808 Beats Model 500 - No UFOs Egyptian Lover - Egypt, Egypt JJ Fad - Supersonic Electro Empire (www.electroempire.com) is a good site to check out audio clips and get some history on the artists. Though some of the artists listed there fall more into the category of hip-hop than electro... but I'll leave categorizations to those who stock shelves in record stores. ;) g - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Not everybody are interested as much as we are in electronic music culture. for the mainstream crowd its another new "trend" and they just go by it, then comes another. they don't care about its history or roots. which is sort of sad. sakke -- "Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is." - Master Yoda, Star Wars Episode II - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Can I plug my electro mix now? :) It's at: http://www.brelson.com/music_mx_electro2.html and features some fairly obvious tracks - mainly made for people who are unfamiliar with the genre, so you get "Tour De France", "Clear" and "Trans Europe Express", but you also get Pretty Tony and Captain Rock, and overenthusiastic commentary on every track... RE: [313] submerge.panel
I'm one of the first people who jumped onto this thread. When I did, I changed my subject line to OT: Globalization [was: sumberge.panel]. In most of my posts on the subject, I have brought the thread back to Detroit and to Detroit music. I fail to see how this relatively novel thread - which I believe is very relevant to 313 music - is so horrific that it sends people off the list, but a few gibbering Hawtin fanboys tossing back and forth the same arguments we hear every three months is "on-topic" and oh so relevant. I have to delete entire threads on this list all of the time. I suggest people who find a thread offensive should do the same, and refrain from complaining about it. Complaints about list content are the most OT thread of all. Re: [313] submerge.panel
Could you point to where I had reposted private email to 313? Also, like wise, I don't remeber replying to a private email and cc'ing 313. I believe that I replied to a posting that on the 313 list. I don't mind being held to my point, but I don't see where that is happening. I never recieved any private email. From what I read (could be wrong), replying to a public 313 posting, and including the original sender isn't against those suggestions. And as for people dropping ship, it happens all the time. I'd have to say I've unsubscribed over 20 times myself since 1995 or so. But if one wishes to participate in discussions of Detroit based music, it's worth hitting the delete button from my point of view.If I don't have time in my life to deal with some of the drama that always surrounds people who are passionate around music (and what that music is attempting to protray), then I unsubscribe. I agree ... on to Discussions on Detroit Techno but I personally, agree that this list should stay unmoderated in regards to 1 person being the end all for what can and can't be on the list. List moderation , an actual single moderator, develops more of a community spirit then a dictorship. Not sure about any Clear compilations, but I worked in Ambient Soho at the time so was fairly close to the whole process. It was the dying years of the ambient boom in London, and we were all looking for new musical pastures to go and graze in; I flew off towards Detroit techno, others went to 'trip-hop', others to 'intelligent drum'n'bass', and Clair was leading the contingent who were heading in the direction of electro. We were all dropping lots of electro in ambient sets at the time, and we had some copies of "Rockit" in the shop which were selling like hot cakes. Clair wanted to run an electro label, and had the concept of Clear in her head, and so a bunch of people from Autechre (Sean also worked in the shop around that time) to Seefeel to Reload all produced some electro tracks from which she culled the first few releases. I think it turned out to be more successful than even she was expecting it to be! I was asked to make some electro tracks too (I used to do some relatively high-profile ambient PAs) but never got around to it. I think I missed out on a major opportunity there! As Tom mentioned, Clair is now running another label, deFocus, alongside an ex-313er by name of Simon Walley (aka [CiM])... > I'm curious about that... any names to recommend ? Everyone needs to hear the following old electro tracks: Pretty Tony - Fix It In The Mix Freestyle - Jam The Box Freestyle - Don't Stop The Rock Planet Patrol - Play At Your Own Risk Captain Rapp - Bad Times Garrett's Crew - Nasty Rock Twilight 22 - Electric Kingdom They're certainly the tracks that work the most magic on me, but for some reason they're not as common as many of the others. "Nasty Rock" and "Bad Times" in particular are bloody amazing... Brendan Legal Disclaimer This message contains confidential information and is intended only for the individual named. [313] Radioboy/globalisation, ON topic again even... (was submerge.panel)
And to get this thread back on topic, it seems like Radioboy, who performed at the planet e party, is very consciously making his performance a commentary on the negative aspects of the corporate aspects of globalisation. The website that goes with his CD has some very good info on that note. My question is, are there any other musisicians that formulate their music as a response to what is going on now? Offhand I think cover of the UR Ambush record has some relevance: "You've been waiting for your adventure vacation all year and now your finally headed up river and your gonna have fun regardless of the poverty, corruption, political unrest, fragile ECO systems and reports of rebel forces in the area. After all it's your god given right to have fun all over the world wherever you please right? ... Finally they appear their war painted faces staring. Didn't the missionaries teach them this is wrong? You feel the power of their God thru their eyes, it is the jungle itself. one of the hostiles wears an old shirt that reads "UR unexploitable". Your imminent destiny calls and as with all pollutants UR consumed by nature as she punishes her children who cannot dance to her drums." Any other ideas? /dave Paul Virilio: "Resistance is always possible! But we must engage in resistance first of all by developing the idea of a technological culture. However, at the present time, this idea is grossly underdeveloped. For example, we have developed an artistic and a literary culture. Nevertheless, the ideals of technological culture remain underdeveloped and therefore outside of popular culture and the practical ideals of democracy. This is also why society as a whole has no control over technological developments. And this is one of the gravest threats to democracy in the near future. sorry David, BUT, from the very source you quote: "Do not repost private email to 313. Likewise do not reply in private email and 'CC' 313. Im not nitpicking, but if you reference a text to prove your point, I'll tend to hold you to that text pretty firmly, at least initially. so yes, 313 is unmoderated, but IMO it should be since it wanders off topic enough for people to jump ship (Mike Taylor?) of course, we could argue semantics all day long. back to detroit techno back to my cage, -Joe - Original Message - From: "David Bate" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: ":P" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Friday, June 07, 2002 11:06 AM Subject: Re: [313] submerge.panel > >From what I understand, this is a self moderated list. And I can remember the "electro revival of 1994", where all the StreetSounds compilations suddenly shot up in price around London, Clair (who worked in Ambient Soho at the time) decided to launch the Clear label (she was asking everyone to start making electro tracks, and it's that burst of activity that led to things like Gescom, Jedi Knights, etc etc). But basically electro is a continually evolving scene, as that allmusic.com essay posted yesterday made clear. To the wider world it was seen as an early-80s phenomenon, but it actually wasn't. Similar to techno, which obviously didn't die once Inner City singles stopped charting. And there's lots of old electro many people have yet to discover - the Pandisc material, Captain Rapp, Garrett's Crew, etc etc. I don't think many people are actively rejecting electro as a result of the recent hype, anyway... [313] Re: electro is "trendy"
I remember back when there was the "electro revival of 1995." And then Drexciya came out with the "Return of Drexciya" on UR. As far as I remember Drexciya had come out with at least one record every year since 91. Now there's the "electro revival of 2002." But as to the trendiness of electro, being in NY I can say that is has become NYC-trendy. My "trendy" friends have been asking me for mix tapes for the first time since the last Basement Jaxx album came out. There have been articles in all of the "trendy" NYC papers and magazines about "electroclash," Adult., Miss Kittin and the Hacker, etc. At 10:34 AM 6/6/2002 -0400, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I love how people still consider electro "trendy." Funny cos it's been looked at this way since '96 or so. Also, how people call electro "retro" or "80s" but never label techno this way. Funny, cos the root-shaping of BOTH of these subgenres took place in the 80s in one way or another. Electriyin Mojo was never afraid to jump across genres, and he was definetly revolutionary. I like classic techno as much as the next person, but I cant disgard electro by calling it "trendy" and pushing it aside. [313] Re: electro is "trendy"
I love how people still consider electro "trendy." Funny cos it's been looked at this way since '96 or so. I never understood this whole philosophy. -j ":P" <[EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "Sakari Karipuro" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, termi.net><313@hyperreal.org> cc: 06/05/02 10:04 Subject: Re: [313] Techno/Industrial (was Re: [313] Does anyone compare AMto Hawtin?) nope, the immediate future is electro and micro*.* both are considered trendy among those who need to be trendy to be part of something -Joe - Original Message - From: "Sakari Karipuro" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, June 05, 2002 9:55 AM Subject: Re: [313] Techno/Industrial (was Re: [313] Does anyone compare to Hawtin?) > Ian wrote on Wed, 5 Jun 2002 about following: > > > That said, I'm waiting for the EBM revival to rise out of this > > "electro-clash" business. It probably isn't you know. It's a very diverse place and as you say, inner city areas as well as remote rural backwaters aren't very technologically advanced places. Countries like Finland, Norway or Japan are arguably more technologically advanced all in all. But there aren't many metrics for measuring the technological advancement of a particular nation, in the same way as we use literacy, mortality rates, etc, to measure overall standard of living. But ultimately I don't think it impacts on techno music all in all. What stance should UR or Submerge take on this issue? Should the process of globalisation be stopped, so that records can't be exported to the rest of the world? Does techno music pose the dangerous risk of homogenising European culture? To me, techno is one of the *good* things about globalisation; on one hand, you get Starbucks, McDonalds, and other sterile forces spreading throughout the globe. Some of the releases on 2000 Black or Archive might have what you're looking for ... Artists like Nubian Mindz, Phoojun, the "Avenues and Alleways" 12" from Titonton Duvante, etc. Very electronic sounding with broken beat influences... Also some stuff from Delsin has this kind of sound, check the Aardvarck things or the Future Beat Alliance 12" (not the album). >From what I've heard the Agent K album is pretty "jazz-funky" though. Ive written realtime DSP software under linux and the latency is excellent compared to windows. Obviously the latency achieved is dependant on the spec of the system and the complexity of digital filter algo's involved. 5ms would be fine for mixing - Ive had decks running through the DSP stuff I wrote at 10ms and the latency wasn't noticeable. given the latest traffic, this is more on-topic than you think. the uk "broken beat" stuff is inclusive of a lot of different material, ranging from ex-drum-and-bass types like Seiji (whose Opaque material and remixes are among my favorite), house, hip-hop (IG Culture!) and yes, very "jazz-funky" as you put it. I'll keep buying vinyl, I love listening to it at home and almost all the music I own in on wax, but come on, get that heavy record bag off my shoulder and I'm a happy camper. if i'm correct, finalscratch still runs on the BE operating system. And while i know it only comes with the pc version, if you bought the mac version, there's no reason why final scratch wouldn't work on it. that was one of the beautiful things about the Be os; although you could use either a mac or a pc with the Os, anything that would work on Be Pc would work on the Be Mac. anyone know anything different? you could only use be on much older versions of macs. basically about the time that jobs came back to the company, that compatibility went away. so it was several years ago. and that's also irrelevant now the pro version of FS (i.e. the first version) was based on be. be got sold and basically dismantled, sot that screwed up everything. it then got ported to an embedded linux system -- this is a little different than a normal linux install. the consumer version will come with a stripped down linux distribution, designed to run FS. it uses a loopback file system on your (pc) c: drive, which is basically like a virtual partition. it creates a 500mb (or so) file from within which all the OS stuff happens, independent of the rest of the c: drive (believe this doesn't apply to the audio files). this is how they get around the latency issue without requiring the home user to repartition their drive and do a 'normal' linux install - which, depending on the distribution and the hardware, can be a real bitch. this need to make FS consumer friendly is what has delayed the launch.. which is a pretty good reason. stanton swears that if you have a pc that meets the basic system requirements you'll just be able to run the installer and be done with it. and as that letter stated, a mac version will be out shortly thereafter. not sure if that will also be an embedded linux solution as well or not. it's feasible to run FS under osx because of it's unix/bsd heritage so we'll see. no way will it run on 9.x systems. i'm one of those people anxiously awaiting the mac availability... - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks, j would really recommend all his albums.. public energy no. 1, a shocking hobby, g-spot, ginger.. but they're generally quite a bit different than loudboxer. sorta. and all great. i believe there's a fair amount of RA on his site, so you might want to start there. also the plus8 site has clips of all the old 12"s now. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] [OT] Re: [313] submerge.panel and technology
Unfortunately there is no better world to escape to (and if there was I dare say we'd need rocket ships to get there!) Avoiding global capitalism is not an option at this point in the game, those who refuse to play will probably not survive. Therefore I see no other option than the creative adoption of technology as a weapon of resistance for those cultures that wish to survive. However, I don't believe that global capitalism is necessarily synonymous with technological advance; in many ways technology appears to be hindered by capitalism, and backwards agendas promoted (why else gas guzzling cars STILL are the primary form of transportation?). I don't see technology as something that necessarily conflicts with inherited cultures, either. Techno music itself is in so many ways a technological reworking of very basic human rhythms, often with roots in Africa. Even the homogenization promoted by the internet seems to exist primarily insofar as the internet promotes a homogenous corporate agenda; but one must admit that it has just as much potential to create virtual spaces that promote what is unique and singular, what is heterogenous rather than always the same. Indeed the decentralization of the internet makes it ideal for this, although there is an ongoing struggle over how decentralized it will be and who will control it. In the end, your argument against technology would seem to be misleading, as all humans use tools, there is no human culture that exists without technology. The question is: what kind of technology will we choose to create??? /dave g wrote: Agreed that societies which are technologically advanced have a "competitive advantage" in the global economy, but should all cultures be forced into global capitalism and the technology race? g Paul Virilio: "Resistance is always possible!
