Claude Young is up to Pattern Buffer 8 with Djax-Up 360. I have the first 2 in this series, but they were all hard techno. Have they all followed in the same path? Oh... BTW.. the Terrace record which had the piece on the back was 'Straight Trippin'. I think the red pressing was limited to the first 1000. On a side note, AO's artword is still up to scratch looking across the djax.nl site. (313) DEMF Hotels
For those who were looking at hotel prices this year: A friend of mine from NYC called up the Ren Cen (Marriott). Looks like they finally got wise, and are charging 260 a night now. This, of course, was calling the hotel direct, but last year they were charging about 120 calling them direct. Just a friendly FYI for those preparing their travel budgets... Peace, Alex

(313) Bitstream on Modern Love
Anyone else a fan of Bitstream? Not heard their one on Signal?? I got this one (Modern Love 001) on Saturday, and it fairly blinding, the lead track is a real peak-time uplifting electro affair, whilst the other tracks are by turns funky, inventive, and scary. I did hear one of theirs which wasn't all that (orange label, can't remember) but I definitely think these guys are one to watch. Apologies if they've already been discussed. Andrew
Re: (313) Bitstream on Modern Love
Hi! I really like bitstream as well, esp. the Monolith ep on Signal! Nice sounds! I don't know of an orange label. Just know about the monolith ep, Incubater and Monsters from ID on Signal and the Crab Nebula on City Centre Offices. Remco

The category they are listed is electronic/dance the rock/punk/funk/soul/rb etc. are other names. And what about the Acid Mix of Tied Up by LFO???!! I'm playing it now - it intnse!!! that's a coincidence, i was lsietning to that the other nite...goes off the deepend halfway through :) personally i like my acid to be deeper rather than screaming and distorted no-ones mentioned Basketball heroes - woody mcbride yet robin...
(313) Tracks for review
I've got some new tracks knocking around in mp3 format, and would love to hear any comments or thoughts on them! They've all been finished in the last week or so, and are available here: http://www.webworks.demon.co.uk/trax Since autumn last year I've been continuously working on UK bass and ghetto-tech sort of tracks, and now that some of those tracks have been licensed I've been able to move back to making techno, which is quite nice to be honest! open conspiracy and wave are the two most melodic ones on there, while pockets of resistance is a bit more of a DJ tool sort of thing... Sorry for the blatant self-promotion! Brendan

as a matter of fact, acid jazz has no link to acid house. back in 87-89 acid house was popular and the nu jazz sound was more towards the soul II soul and talkin loud sound of beefed up rb/soul style. i think, in order to make ppl understand and categorize music what they have done was to coin the term acid jazz to make ppl think that its diff. than your regular jazz trax and has more of a club feel. Brand New Heavies, Galliano, Incognito, Banderas, Urban Poets, His Emperors New Clothes, Ronny Jordan and the like had a similar sound. And there were three main labels pushing this sound, and one was named Acid Jazz, the othe two being Talkin Loud and MoWax. Re: (313) Acid Jazz (Best Acid Lines In The World...Ever!!)
and this is how allmusic describes acid house The style of dance that exploded American house music around the world, Acid House first appeared in the mid-'80s in the work of Chicago producers like DJ Pierre, Adonis, Farley Jackmaster Funk, and Phuture (the latter of whom coined the term in their classic single, Acid Trax). Mixing elements of the house music that was already up and running in Chicago (as well as New York) with the squelchy sounds and deep bassline of the Roland TB-303 synthesizer, acid house was strictly a Chicago phenomenon until stacks of singles began to cross the Atlantic, arriving in the hands of eager young Brits. The sound jelled in small warehouse parties held in London in 1986-87, and then went overground during 1988's infamous Summer of Love, when thousands of clubgoers traveled to the hinterlands for the massive events later known as raves. Acid house hit the British pop charts quite quickly, with M/A/R/R/S, S'Express, and Technotronic landing huge hits before the dawn of the '90s. By that time, the acid house phenomenon had largely passed in England and was replaced by rave music. New-school U.S. producers from Cajmere to Armand Van Helden to Felix Da Housecat kept the sound alive and well during the '90s. thats why i said acid jazz and acid house have nothing in common apart from being a sub genre of electronic music and having the Acid in front of them:) mehmet
RE: (313) Acid Jazz (Best Acid Lines In The World...Ever!!)
Mo Wax weren't really pushing Acid Jazz - they arrived as Acid Jazz was dying on its arse - they were primarily instrumental hip-hop - (trip-hop - though I hate the term) There IS a link to Acid House cos both terms referred to a scene where lots of young people were coming together and un-selfconsciously getting down in dirty clubs and warehouses. House was eventually referred to as Acid House, so the Jazzheads parried by referring to their scene as Acid Jazz. -Original Message- From: Mehmet Koryurek [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, April 08, 2003 12:51 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Acid Jazz (Best Acid Lines In The World...Ever!!) as a matter of fact, acid jazz has no link to acid house. back in 87-89 acid house was popular and the nu jazz sound was more towards the soul II soul and talkin loud sound of beefed up rb/soul style. i think, in order to make ppl understand and categorize music what they have done was to coin the term acid jazz to make ppl think that its diff. than your regular jazz trax and has more of a club feel. (313) soul on wax #3 spirit of corea
speaking of jazz... everybody pick up soul on wax #3! first s.o.w. in what...4 years?? ha! produced by russ gabriel i should mention... anyways, it's absolutely beautiful house/jazz that sounds even a bit like fela kuti it is so buoyant and beautiful and catchy and a...deep. live sax, flute, and guitar -- but i don't think it's quite as noodly and laidback as russ' recent mostly live album on out of the loop (or is it? toe? were there any songs as good on there?) it's just not to be missed. only the 1 track and a pretty similar remix on the 12, but it is very worth it!...i'm not really a jazz dowg myself so seriously...don't sleep! soul on wax returns! website listed on the record but it's not setup yet..http://www.soulonwaxcom.com/ jt _ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. (313) SHIVER - (WAS Re: (313) Acid Jazz (Best Acid Lines In The World...Ever!!))
Oh and everything touched by Erik van de Broek with a 303 in it of course okay i am going to stop this now :)) Was that the guy who did Shiver? Yep... What's hap'nin with him now?? Well they stopped releasing on Shiver and Dap somewhere in the midninties. Erik released some drum 'n bass as Scattah and did some pop-electro thing which sounded okay but not anywhere on the same level as the Shiver and Dap stuff. Rumour goes that he still has a box of about 40 DAT tapes with material which makes the shiver and dap stuff sound like shania twain on the techno tip. Last thing i heard is that he now tries to make some money by doing some trance stuff... Interesting. I hope he releases some of this material, it would be a shame to let it die on DAT. Plus there were problems with one of the decks I think, which certainly didn't help. From what he said to me later, he wasn't very satisfied himself with his set - but I still enjoyed it. : ) b) 'Drexciyan DJ Stingray'?! Drexciyan DJ Stingray was tight, but hearing tracks like M4 and M5 played at 45 ruins them for me. From what I heard, he always plays everything so fast. B Public Enemy was fantastic. Haven't lost a step, and *everyone* was getting down. You could tell they were having a great time, and it was really infectious. Absolutely! Even for someone like me who's not really into HipHop - I totally enjoyed their show. Bola (apparently didn't show) but the visuals while they played some of his music (I think) were mind-blowing. Someone else may be able to fill in gaps about this. Yes, it was Bola's music they were showing those great visuals to. He didn't come to ATP because he'd had a baby daughter 2 weeks earlier - congratulations! : ) This was one of the highlights for me. Definitely have to pick up some of his stuff! Checked Jim O'Rourke for about 15 minutes. Nice pure ambience (i.e. no discernable beat). Not suiting my mood. Head back for more Stasis/Kev/Whatever. Jim O'Rourke was very very good. Just the thing for me on the Sunday afternoon. A bit abrasive at times but always keeping it interesting. I simply stood there with my eyes closed Coil (probably my most anticipated show) - really long set-up process (like 45 minutes). Really weird experimental vocally stuff with 3 Nords?!? Cool stuff. Not right for the moment. And staying on for Coil after that was the right choice, too. : ) Mustn't forget to mention SND, who played before O'Rourke. A very short 45-minute set of which I managed to miss the first 25mins dammit. Great minimal clicky-cutty stuff yet very cohesive and even melodic in places. Dug out their album Tender Love (on Mille Plateaux) today, totally forgotten that I have that *doh*, and I can really recommend it. G-Man: played for about 20 minutes of his live set and some assbag pulled the fire alarm (or maybe it was a real fire???) - no one seemed to know for sure. Retreated to chalet. I'm sure it was a false alarm. There's always one idiot who seems to think this kinda thing is very funny. Real shame about G-Man's live set, it had started off very promising. Returned just in time for the beginning of Mark Broom. I danced non-stop. Always an excellent DJ - throwing in just enough bangers and just enough depth to keep it constantly interesting. It is true that we are spoiled for choice in London. Surgeon: Holy crap! This was a proper Final Scratch workout. It wasn't the best DJ set I've ever seen, but I've never seen another set like it. He went everywhere seamlessly, and directed the pace with a mastery that's only been equalled, not surpassed. Nothing more to add to this really. Mark Broom was a tad too banging but at that time it was just what I needed. Rah! And Surgeon's set was truly perfect. 'nuff said. Tom, how did your live thang in Glasgow go? : ) Cheers, Anya

Well they did not started a whole new subgenre however Subsonic Soundscape was released in an area that not a lot of people did electro, maybe some guys from Detroit but not half the techno scene. ok - that's true How do you wanna define 'your own sound' well, compare it to Stefan Robbers for instance wheter you like his music or not, you still can here his 'own' sound/style in his latest record and the first one. if it is just a typical Orlando Voorn record, yeah Voorn does have his own sound and so did v.d. broek but less. The reason v.d. Broek never got big had nothing to do with his musical quality... yeah, I don't have any doubt about his musical production skills.. just about if he has any message within his music, not that is necessary but I want to say I don't recognize it in theirs they more seem to look to potential musical growing areas, but mostly always following, never really innovating isn't that the case of 99% of every musician in the world, even in the techno/house/electro/broken beat/db/etc scene and innovating does not equals good quality. yeah, very true and I didn't say that. but both, and maybe I can count Max 404 in that one as well, they go from genre to genre, never pushing or deeping out one style. . both orlando voorn and erik van den broek went from pretty gabba styled to clubby techno to intelligent techno to jungle to whatever..

RE: (313) Patrick Pulsinger
he's always been into jazz. another great example of Pulsinger effectively working techno and jazz flavors has to be the track City Lights on Dogmatic Sequences vol. II... on Disko B if I recall. Came out mid to late 90s. I always still play this track, the version with the stand-up bassline, and really lush strings.. very original sounding tune. It's got jazz influences by I wouldn't describe it as Jazzy if you know what i mean.. that word doesn't even do it justice. A true deeper sounding influence in his electronic music, esp. in the percussion. Just a brilliant, timeless track. peace Matt MacQueen

-Original Message- From: Robert Taylor [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 08 April 2003 15:32 House was eventually referred to as Acid House, so the Jazzheads parried by referring to their scene as Acid Jazz. I'm sure that the acid prefix was a semi-ironic jibe about the fact that, back then, everyone seemed to be sticking the word acid in front of everything to make it sound cool and current... there was no link at all between the two, and as far as I'm aware a lot of people in the Acid jazz scene were very sceptical towards house full stop, acid or no acid. I'd be inclined to agree that Orlando Voorn has his own style - I feel like I can recognise his rhythmic patterns and melodic structures a mile off - but when I say that I'm only really talking about the set of records of his with which I'm familiar. I haven't heard any of his more gabba-ish stuff, his drum'n'bass, or his earlier hip-house sorts of productions, but when it comes to making mainstream techno for labels like KMS, Fragile, Tab and so on, there's definitely a detectable Voorn fingerprint... (313) stewart walker/greg schiff
Whoa, it doesn't pay to do a show and then try and come to work ... Stewart Walker and Greg Schiff played last night here in Iowa City, to a small but maniacally appreciative audience; it was interesting to watch them use the same setup and come out with fairly different results -- Schiff was on the whole more melodic, sort of techno by way of deep house, and Stewart was relentlessly, rigorously minimalist. Local DJ Herbert played angry, starting off with banging techno. I then did my current live-sampling, baffle-the-ravers set -- why do straight ahead techno with Stewart and Greg on the bill? I've said it before and I'll say it again -- Stewart Walker has gone further towards perfecting the performance of techno live than anyone else I've ever seen. So much so that he really sounds like a different artist than the one that makes his records -- he wants to engage a dance audience fully when he's in front of them, and his records are smoother, more reflective. Greg's stuff really got to people too -- he seemed to have the housier half of the crowd eating out of his hand, whereas Stewart had the techno heads at hello. The crowd wasn't very big, but for a monday night in a town of 50,000, it was decent. Except for the banging sound system, I could have done the party in my basement.

Does anyone have a direct email for stewart or booking info contact. I know of ppl in Jersey who would give their left arm to have him play here. thanks d --- Kent williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Whoa, it doesn't pay to do a show and then try and come to work ...
