RE: (313) Soul Music (was some nonsense spw was going on about)
the term soul had a resergance in trend with the music industry starting around the mid to late 90's Soul is only a figment of the hu-man imagination which can not be scientifically proven, a primitive concept based in tradition. Ignoring for a second statements from the artists about how the landscape of Detroit impacted their soundscape, LISTEN to the music. Do you hear horror or contextual poverty in STRINGS OF LIFE? In NUDE PHOTO? In TRIANGLE OF LOVE? There is undoubtedly some darkness in these and other songs. But that isn't all there is. Just as techno is solely a reaction to a limited vision of what Detroit is, soul (and the blues) isn't simply a reaction to subjugation. I don't think we'd be listening to this stuff if it were. I hear simple tracks composed on drum machines and synthesizers, 4/4 16- step sequences. Derrick May isn't exactly Van Cliburn competition material if you know what I mean in fact Stings Of Life was more like good production/ editing skills but I'm glad to see him establish a name for himself in the mainstreme music community as the techno pioneer and reeping the awards of good marketing and PR skills. This nonsense about Detroit techno a way of escaping the economic, Industrial waste land of Detroit or the ghetto is complete nonsense. I'm sure maybe on a subconscience level. What was going on in Chicago with house and technology with drum machines, midi sequencers that Juan Atkins was into was more of a factor influencing the first techno coming out of Detroit. =

Has anyone had a chance to try out that Vestax PCV-180? As far as I can tell it looks like an *updated* PCV175 aka PMC170.the basic mixer has been the same for many years. They keep reskining/tweaking it slightly and redesignating it. The PCV275 is also based off the same chassisas is my PMC270A Note: you have to upgrade to PCV faders...and it's plastic, blech. Don't pay more than $250 or you'll never be able to forgive yourself;-) Peace, m*

(313) Talking Of Vestax
My first 'product' review (ahem): How sweet is the new Vestax portable turntable? Bit tinny for techno - ie any syncopated records, or records with hi hats - but very good, and real cool for neo-soul sounds, or anything in the middle range. Def worth Au$399. Surprised none of the spotters have mentioned it yet on 313.
RE: (313) DJ Mixers
i don't know about this mixer in particular- but the one thing you want to check with lower end Vestax is whetheryou can hear the EQ in the headphones. My roommate's old one sent the full signal to the headphones regardless of how the EQ was set. Annoying. And I don't remember what model it was. Re: (313) Q's
I was at the Glasgow night. Got there just intime to catch the end of Tom's set, then Kirk DeGiorgio came on and did his Ableton set. He was far more banging than I expect and highly enjoyable - one minor point and I dont know if it was a technical problem with the set up or a problem with Ableton itself but there were minor glitches in the music, like a tiny pause thing every so often 15 mins or so. I bumped into Jason Brunton and that was when I found out that Stacey Pullen didnt make it. Apparently his flights got messed up and he was stuck in Amsterdam. Anyway after Kirk finished every time I went back through there was a different DJ on - Tom and the Trax residents seemed to be tagging on and off covering Staceys timeslot and doing a fine job of it too. I tried at one point to go a check out Danny Krivit in another room but I cant remember ever being in a club that busy (I think he should have been given one of the other 2 bigger rooms to play). Anyway he was playing Strings of life when I went in and the place was going nuts. Anyway, I had to leave that room due to lack of space and went out to the front arch for a few more drinks. All in all a good night out. Cheers BT Morning. I got a couple of Q's.. 1) How was the party in Glasgow? The line-up looked ace. anyone go? (313) Bleep43.com on Saturday
Thanks to everyone who turned out for the party on Saturday and especial thanks to Jonny McIntosh and Phonopsia, aka Tristan Watkins for their ace deep housey sets. We were treated to 2 hours of immaculately selected and confidently executed house from Detroit (mostly) and broken beat from Tristan, and 2 hours of at turns euphoric classic house and disco and at others, the deepest of deep house, from Jonny. Once the spirit took hold in that little room, it didn't really dissipate (imho) for the rest of the night. And that would be the only party in London in which some of the (to most folk) most obscure vintage disco (or even Prince songs Jonny! ;-) would get a huge roar from the floor, before the end of the second bar! That just illustrates what a knowing and appreciative crowd attends. If you're doing a house event and you think you've got some credibility and a bit of class, you need to book Jonny McIntosh, and you need to book Phonopsia too. Ken

However, this is after using the first LP as aural wallpaper for over a year, and I still like it! What repeated listening does expose though is the essential naivete of the construction of the tracks - not sure if that's a criticism though. =
Re: (313) Ulrich Schnauss
good. I may get lots of personal attacks for this but I do think his stuff is slightly over rated. I think the music is just a bit too nice for my particular taste. I have far away trains passing and A Strangely Isolated Place, both are good but not as good as many people make out IMHO. I have far away trains and a few singles I'm w/ you. I think his melodies and synth work are really great - reminds me a little of some old 4AD stuff. But his beats are really cold, thin, simple, and overly quantized for my taste (in general.. although i've heard exceptions on a few standout tracks). They sound like cheap casio wannabe hip-hop beats or something... kinda ruins it for me - either stick with 4-4 beats or get some really well produced broken stuff, but half-assed break beats are weak.. p
Re: (313) Christian Morgenstern dead
from discogs.com http://www.discogs.com/artist/Christian_Morgenstern Christian Morgenstern died last week (19.06.2003) in his apartment in Cologne at the age of just 27. After skating with friends he went home because he felt pain in his chest. No one could reach him for a few days and finally last friday a friend found him dead in his apartment. Christian was working night and day on his new album, so it was normal that he wasn´t replying to phone calls or whatever. RE: (313) DJ Mixers
here is my breakdown. personally id dont see the point in buying an expencive mixer which will wear out fast and i see lots of 500 and 600's in the shop where i used to work. personally i think they are flimsy, cheap pots and faders. i also think the cheaper vastex and neumarks are not worth a crap, they break down very quickly from experience with friends equipment. please note i'm not talking about there more expencive units, have not used them. it took me a very long time to buy a mixer, i settled on a simple 2 ch, 3 band eq battle style (i'm not a battle style dj though). at first i wanted a mixer with efx but decided that they all sounded either cheap or cheezy and i was really only using them very rare and mainly on the master. so i decided when i wanted to use my exf i could just route them through the master before the amp. the mixer o bought was a stanton sk-2f it was $250 and i have had not problems with mine. three of us around here have them they cost use a range of $150-$300 depending on when we bought and where. we have had one problem unit, the cheapest one, guess you get what you pay for. but the bass pot on one of the channels is going bad. needs to be replaced and stanton warrenty is good for 30 days on that part (bastards). one thing i noticed every 500 or 600 i play is is wack unless it's new or kept in a glass case/has a anal owner. every club i have been at thet has one they are just trash. almost every club around here has one which pisses me off because they are a crappy mixer imo, very cheaply built. if i was you and living in the uk i would look to an ah i dont care for them much either, but it is a layout issue with me there. i have used the x-zone 32 once and it was a beast to use for me. i really did not like how the preamp volume was on the back of the mixer and the volume curve was set up like a scratch mixer but it had no kill switches. but the mixer was solid sounded good and if ah makes a dj mixer like they make there desk mixers they will last. the only club around here i can think of that has an AH is the necto and from my understanding it was very expencive but it's really nice. it has these hudge knobs which leeds me to the one vastex i liek i think is the 245? it's the 19 one with the big knobs for the eq's. scotto lansing, mi plaztikjezuz.com

I have some Stanton 500 cartridges on my SL1200's. I'm thinking of getting me a nice new set. what are you guys using or what would you recommend?? i dont like stanton needles much, the 500's imo is one of the worst needles ever, almost all my friends have them. my biggest complaint about stanton needles are they dont track for jack! i have a pair of trackmasters and they are IMO the worst tracking needle ever. you have to have the lightest hand to even cue and they cost as much as ortofon's. i really like shure needles for the price the m35s are pretty good, they track nice, they sound good, don't over wear the record and the price is right. the m44g is also nice; tracks very well, scratchs, stays in the groove, etc. ortofon needles are nice but they cost alot and then the replacement tip cost a lot also and if you use them a lot you need to replace the tips. these would be my choice if i was rich! i have the same problem with my trackmasters tips $85 for two replacements. i can buy all new shure m35's ($65 for a pair) for that the tips for those are $20 a peice. another thing to think about is wheather you want spherical or eliptical tips. spherical wear the records faster but are better for scratching and surface noise and eliptical wear less but don't track as well and pick more surface noise. i would also look into how much the replacement tips cost and factor that in my decision. scotto lansing, mi plaztikjezuz.com
RE: (313) Cartridges for SL1200's
I would say to stay away from the one piece Ortofons. They have been known to mess up the tone arms on technics turntables because of size the contacts. If you can, compare how much bigger the contacts are on an ortofon compared to a normal headshell, they will push the contacts apart inside your tone arm causing them to come loose after time. Anyone else ever had this problem? Ortofon makes a good sounding cartridge though, you should check out the ones that mount under a headshell. The model #s on these all start with OM. Musicians friend has the OM PRO S with an extra cart for 49.99 right now, you could get 2 for just over a hundred with shipping. RE: (313) Cartridges for SL1200's
I used to buy Stanton Carts and styli, and I was buying them about one replacement stylus every 6 months (and carts about once a year, sometimes twice), until I purchased my first set of Ortofons 4 years ago. They lasted over 2 years (styli were pretty worn, but never had any cartridge problems at all), and I'm on my third set now (one set was stolen). I've NEVER had the problem described with a tonearm, and when I was using stanton's I remember the contacts being very small, which in turn led to alot of cartridges buring out fast (and then you have to lick the contacts, etc.). I've never had to do anything like that with any ortofons that I've used. My tables are 6-7 years old, and I've been using ortofons for 4 years, with none of the aforementioned problems... Well, I know you're joking (sort of) but it does seem to have more to do with music than most other DJ/dance music magazines do. The Octave One article was good and as far as I know when Mixmag started it concentrated on the music and not the newest drug/fashion/high profile DJ - I might be wrong but it seems like the team or person who started 7 has/had some integrity. I don't know about other people on 313 list but I do like to have something to read about in dance music but it seems like there less than a handful of decent magazines out there that cover the music I like and are intelligent - consistently. So far they are: XLR8R (although the recent sway toward post-rock has me a bit worried - not that I don't like that music) Straight No Chaser 3000 (haven't seen it yet but I'd expect anything out of Submerge to be quality) The Wire (although it gets a too self-absorbed at times) If 7 is still kicking around and is upholding the quality that I've seen from on-line articles then I'd be more than happy to read it. Ortofon concord pro-s for me Used them 5 years non-stop, replaced styli for $29 each 2, twice My tone arm is fine and I love these things. Gives good meaning to putting the needle on the record instead of 2 inches above it. I would never switch, unless they were free

I replaced my 500s with Trackmaster II SKs a short while back and I am very happy with them, though I had to spend quite a bit of time experimenting with the correct tonearm weight - you will need to knock this up to at least 3.0... It appears to be considerably cheaper to buy from the US (about 50% of UK costs), but I tried several places all who could not understand some combination of the concepts of credit card payments, international shipping or keeping items in stock. I ended up getting an excellent deal through EBAY (3xcartridges + 8 styli + shipping for £140) With regards to the DJ mixers, I have the Technics Mixing Championship mixer (can't recall model number) and the sound quality I get with it is considerably worse than if I directly attach the turntable to the amp; I have been told that it is a fact of life that mixers will do this - has anyone got any suggestions here as to anyway I can improve things or recommend any mixer which does retain decent sound quality? Cheers David

You are correct; I have never had this problem. But then again, I have never put ortofon needles on my decks. I do however know a couple different people who this has happened to, maybe its something else they are doing to their decks to cause this problem but they swear it was the Orts that did it. had a wicked time ::)) thanks guys for the great musique :) -Original Message- From: Odeluga, Ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 23 June 2003 14:10 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org Cc: Toby Frith; Emile Facey; Jo Johnson; Jonny McIntosh; Phonopsia Subject: (313) Bleep43.com on Saturday Thanks to everyone who turned out for the party on Saturday and especial thanks to Jonny McIntosh and Phonopsia, aka Tristan Watkins for their ace deep housey sets. It's not only with dance music culture but with more mainstream music like rock, country (artist going back to blue grass, folk music roots) genres like neo-soul (coke classic commercials)electronica Pop artsit like Moby. I think he has, artist like Jay-Z and Herbbie Hancock are well aware of who Derrick May is, I think Carl Craig is more popular though. Someone told they saw highlights of the DEMF on MTV which is about as mainstream as it gets. Carl Craig has been featured in mainstream American magazines like Rolling Stone on numerous occasions, Wasnt it you that mentioned them making the cover of Urb? Urb is on a lot of Magazine racks. Speaking of Rolling Stone I rember reading an article (or was it Spin?) about Kraftwerk when they went on tour back in the late 90's it had all the bands Kraftwerk had influenced and Carl Craig was up there with the likes of Devo. These guys are not hitting the Billboard Top 40 but that doesn't mean they are not getting recognition for their accomplishments by the music industry. If you still have any doubts look what's classifdied under Popular Music on the CDNOW: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/103-7582885-0525427 Innovator -- Derrick May; Audio CD Editorial Reviews Amazon.com Thanks to legendary singles like Strings of Life and Nude Photo, Derrick May is universally regarded as the definitive techno producer; by hijacking the rhythmic sensibilities of house and adding the intelligence of European electronica and the spirit of Motown, he single-handedly defined and articulated the sound of Detroit. But despite (or perhaps because of) his status as a legend, nary a bleep had emerged from his studio since 1990 before the release of Innovator, a collection of his past work. This double CD contains the aforementioned Strings and Nude Photo singles as well as other classics like It Is What It Is, Salsa Life, and The Beginning, all of which have been available only in vinyl form on May's own Transmat label. Until he reemerges from a self-imposed musical hiatus, your course in the spirit of Detroit begins and ends here. --Matthew Corwine Customers who bought this title also bought: * Faces Phases ~ Kevin Saunderson * Wax Trax! Really? That's interesting because last time I checked very few people even know what the Movement festival or even the DEMF is, let alone songs like Nude Photo, Beyond the Dance, Stings of Life, or The Dance. Pop his name into MTV's search and in the news archives you get one item that comes up - and that item is - BLANK. There isn't anything there on him. There is one review of Innovator and a bio. The other CD they list is a compilation that includes other artists like - Propellerheads, The Crystal Method, Atomic Babies, Headrillaz, Electric Skychurch, BT, Rabbit in the Moon, Fatboy Slim, etc. Plus Derrick isn't even mentioned in the review! All this despite pulling off one of the nation's largest electronic festivals without any financial backing and managing to bring the spirit, dare I say soul, back to the festival. The reason I use MTV as a thermometer is because *that is the mainstream music community*. If you think Derrick May is being recognized by the mainstream music community then you are seriously fooling yourself. (313) Tour De France 03
Caught an mp3 of this today. At first listening, I didn't think that it was that great, but like Expo 2000 it worms it's way into your affections nicely with repeated listening..I've been playing it non-stop now for about 30 mins!. Very much a dance-floor track, some nice vocodered vocals very low in the mix...It's definitely techno-orientated, probably more in the vein of Steve Rachmad/Sterac meets Thomas Brinkmann via the Youngsters...and I think this is Etage 2 of the 4 on the CD and 12 released on 5/7. == Big props to those at the Bleep43 party. Cheers for coming down. Will have to reiterate cheers for Tristan and Jonny, two fantastically talented DJs. Toby www.bleep43.com
(313) ? re: Akufen set at SONAR
Just watched the video of Akufen at SONAR. A question for those who were there to witness his set: What happened at the end? At the 33minute mark the sound drops out and Marc looks frustrated; he appears to try things with both laptops (he had two), yet no sound. He then walks over to the side of the stage, talks to a guy, then back to his laptops where it looks like he was trying things before stopping; he then waves to the crowd and then walks off the stage. There's 4 minutes of video with no sound (ie 33 minutes to 37 minutes where the file ends). Is there a problem with the audio in the video for the last 4 minutes or did his setup crash and he aborted his set at the 33minute mark? What strikes me as strange is that if he had two laptops, if one had crashed, why did he not reboot that and continue at the same time with the other laptop? I can't see how both could have crashed at the same time. And rebooting only takes about 2 minutes, whereas there were 4 minutes of silence. So maybe he intended to do a 33 minute set and I just saw things differently? Anyway, if someone who was there for the actual set could clear this up, would be interested to know what happened. RE: (313) Soul Music (was some nonsense spw was going on about)
Oh - ok, you're talking about being *mentioned* in some mainstream press (if being on a magazine rack equates mainstream then so is High Times and Juxtapose) - this is different that being recognized. MTV - when Carl Craig walks onto TRL and the crowd outside hold up signs saying I (heart) C2!!! then I will agree with you. There might be highlights but you never see a video, you never hear an interview, evidently they aren't buzzworthy, and I'm waiting for the day that one of their talking heads of the month comes on and declares We're here live at the Movement '05 music festival in downtown Detroit city for the next three days! instead of repeating MTV's Spring Break in Cancun '98 for the third time that week. as for the popular music thing with Amazon/CD Now - that's just to say he isn't making Classical music. They only have two general classifications at the highest level - Classical music and Popular music. You'll also find stuff like Jean Ritchie, Oumou Sangare, and Opiate in the Popular music even though you'd be hard pressed to find them being recognized within the mainstream. All said and done - you might see their names pop up but until you *hear* their music on the radio or *see* a video on MTV - they aren't being recognized because it is the music, their art, that they produce that is important. Until the day they stop paying lip service saying oh yeah - he's techno pioneer and we respect that but never play his music (or any other under represented techno/house/etc. innovator) then he/she isn't being recognized. Re: (313) Cartridges for SL1200's
I started out with a pair of Stanton 500AL's... they were an ok starter cartridge, basically a bargain buy for the buck. I never encountered any tracking problems with them, although they were a little fussy on cueing some records. A lot of people that experience problems with tracking and cueing probably don't have their cartridges and tonearms set up correctly, in regards to weight and angle and height. Incorrect settings will make ANY needle perform poorly regardless of how good or bad it's supposed to be. I had upgraded to Trackmaster II-SK's, they were a significant improvement over the 500's (no surprise there)... I used them for about 2 or 3 years with out any contact trouble, and I'm a DJ who's a bit rough with equipment. However, on my second set of replacement needles a while back, I got some real garbage replacement needles (via mail order)... out of the box they wouldn't play right. It took some close examination and comparing to the old needles to determine that faulty manufacturing had set the stylus at an angle that was impossible for it to play correctly on vinyl. With no time to spare and needing immediate replacement, I bought Shure M44's... they've been absolutely wonderful so far. I got a better price on them than I did on the Trackmasters, as well. A couple of guys that I know who have used Ortofon (Concordes) have nothing but praise for them. They're pricey (and trendy, of course), so definitely worth a look if money's not too tight for you. I have some Stanton 500 cartridges on my SL1200's. I'm thinking of getting me a nice new set. what are you guys using or what would you recommend??
