2005-01-14 Thread Simon Hindle
My favourite thing about slsk is the way you can chat with the people
you're downloading from, and browse their other files as well.

If you're searching for quite specialist music (for want of a better
term), that maybe only 10 or 20 users, worldwide, have got, it's a
fair-to-middling bet that they may well be into the same sort of sound
as you. I *always* make a point of searching through other files of
users I've downloaded from and it's quite amazing - I can't measure the
amount of new music I've discovered that I otherwise may never have even
known about. I've also had some great conversations with people from all
over the world. I don't know if the other p2p networks out there support
this function and to be honest I don't care - I'm not fussed about
downloading warez or movies or top 40 CDs. slsk is my best friend. My
only friend.

The best thing about soulseek for me is not in finding lots of well
known stuff (like nirvana) but being able to find lesser known stuff
that I can't find on any other p2p network.

Try typing something 313 related in soulseek and then try it on
another
more well known network (perhaps like Limewire or something) and
compare
the differences. Then you'll see when everyone here talks it up.

Re: (313) tons of tones / future ??

2005-01-14 Thread Simon Kong

Alright ' I know there is no ethics going down on this thread.

but it's starting to sound down right loverly ' this business
of trading other people music without their permission ..

just cause I'm friends with my drug dealer doesn't make it legal

   ..

I guess I'm mostly wondering where all this is going to take us .

Pitch Black ' NZ biggest electronic band have basically committed
to never making money from an album due to the ability to copy
   and share their music ..

It hasn't stopped them making music, but their love is our
   enjoyment.

Six months ago . the word about P2P is that it will only hurt
the majors ' but as we are all obviously willing to seek and
share more obscure and leftfield music . where does that leave
   the minority players . .

also only money being talked about here ' is going towards the
development of a better file sharing network ..

/ please understand I'm not speaking against P2P

I am just interested to see where people on the list
believe this will take music and the artist ' as we
 progress down this path ..

there may be some positive outcomes in the long run ..

but currently ' if your music is good .. then expect for
it to be handed around freely while people make friends
 in the process ..

I'm not innocent ' just curious about future navigation

(313) New Religion / Regal?

2005-01-14 Thread Matt Chester
Hi list - got a quick query that's been bugging me for a while - why is
there no entry for New Religion on discogs, and why are all their records
listed as Regal records? Is that a parent label, or are the New Religion
records licensed from them? I've never noticed the name Regal on any of my
NR cuts, though I could just be being blind...
Any ideas?

Hi Matt,

The cat numbers are definately Reg XXX which looks
more like Regal - perhaps New Religion was a name
thought up when an existing label went for a relaunch
or a change of direction? Perhaps when they started
releasing Critical Phase and Kirk Degeorgio stuff?
Best bet is probobly to email Alex and ask him

Spot on Rob. Alex's the guy to ask, but he's late of this list! ;-)

New Religion is an imprint of Regal records, a wholly owned (but
unacknowledged as such) subsidiary Of EMI. It's how Paul McCartney
didn't screw millions out of Alex and Dan for the 'Temporary Secretary'
track on the 'Secret History comp. I think the license had likely
expired, but favourable terms were negotiated on the basis of the
ongoing relationship between the artist and EMI. Alex, gob on me if I'm
wrong! That's the essence of it I think.

The *real* mystery imo is when was 'Track Four' by Juan Atkins released
and why isn't *that* on discogs?!

Still slightly odd that it's listed as one label on discogs though - usually
sublabels or name changes are noted in there - Ground Zero becoming Keynote
for example, you don't still have to look at the Ground Zero page to check
out Keynote releases...

Lagging behind as usual, I trailed through hundreds of posts yesterday.
You can really see the ebb and flow on this list when you do that, the
moods people are in and how these moods spread. Hmmm ; )
Oh right, music. I recall some posts re Electro, and people mentioning
Andrea Parker. Yes, she does do something wonderful with the bass
doesn't she!
There's a brand new Touchin Bass mix cd out by her called Nobody's
Perfect.

I haven't got it but will probably get it soon after reading this

Seconded Anya!

Have a copy of this (had a mix from her on the show last week) and it is
fantastic - dark and deep. The tracks with David Morley are particularly good
imo, but then we knew that from 'Two Sandwhiches Short Of A Lunch Box'.

Would recommend it to anyone who'd describe themselves as an electro lover

Re: (313) New Religion / Regal?

2005-01-14 Thread sqrrt
Actually, Kirk DeGiorgio has been releasing on Regal / New Religion for
quite a while, as one of the early Regal releases was Family Values'
Diff'rent Sound single, written / produced by Kirk.

Plus, Kirk produced the 3 EPs / album by Brothers In Sound (an excellent
semi-electronic semi-rock brit-pop act) on Regal.

Also, Regal had a few other electronic releases, like the Sunnyview EP,
which has *great* remixes of early electro tracks.

Perhaps the person responsible for signing electronic artists to Regal
decided to spin-off a new sub-label dedicated to the electronic market,
thus making it easier to market and promote as such.

I think they stopped doing that with the Alan Oldham-designed sleeves.

from alex...again.

Hey List!!

Robin forwarded me your emails!

Here's the deal: Regal is New Religion's daddy, and EMI is Regal's
daddy.

So New Religion is a sub-sub.

: )

and Regal is the Beta Bands label too! and Clor's! check 'em out! Joakim
just did a mix of them. Don't think it's out yet. Oh, Regal used to a
Parlophone sub too, but got switched to EMI last year

Oh, and while I'm at it, I'll plug the newbies:

Out now : John Foxx Mr No b/w Joakim mix. Old electronic piece,
remastered and updated, specially for Greg Earle ; )

Out soon : Hal Varian EP. Deep warm electronics from Holland, beautiful
stuff! I just got the finished copies this morning, they look cool too!

and *drum roll* Me and Kirk have nearly finished the ART LP! Just a
remix to come in now for the promo 12 to precede the LP. I feel very
happy
today, we've worked really really hard on it, and I'm very very proud
of it

too. I'm going to get steaming drunk tonight with my mate to celebrate.

Sorry for the sp*m, hope you're all OK.

Re: (313) New Religion / Regal?

i think regal/new religion are synonymousregal is in fact the official name
of the label -- hence the matrix #'s, and why all official business with new
religion is conducted under the regal recordings name. there doesnt seem to
officially be any new religion label! they're existentialist pikeys.

it is confusing tho because nowhere on the recent releases is the regal
recordings name mentioned (unless you extrapolate from the matrix#), only new
religion.

hey alan oldham deserves some serious recognition for the cover art he's been
doing for these records too!! beautiful multi-colored comicart-meets-popart.
the ones for juan's stuff seem especially great. on the other hand, whoever
does the layout/design needs to be drug thru the streets. every record looks
identical, which is bad since the text is wicked hard to read on all of them,
really looks like some bad indie-rock flyers i see around town. and that's just
the a-side, then they mirror the text on the b-side, turning it into retarded
klingon. it's so bad, i've even heard a couple people say they have trouble
playing the records out because finding particular records/tracks is so hard..

Re: (313) future ??

2005-01-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
1. I've never been concerned about doing things that are illegal, isn't that
what makes underground, well, underground? Hey, I'm an anarchist though...

2. As I have said many times, I buy as many records as I can afford. I love
vinyl. Soulseek does not change my record buying, it just makes me a better
informed consumer. Soulseek actually increases my craving for record buying.
The biggest problem is that often I CAN'T FIND MOST OF THE RECORDS I REALLY
WANT in stores...

Yes, people will trade your tracks for free and make new friends while doing
it. BUT, they just might buy your record when they see it, which is pretty
unlikely if they never heard of you before. I bet most true music lovers feel
the same way I do. In the long run, I just don't buy that P2P will ruin the
industry. I feel the same way about software. I would have never purchased a
legit copy of Ableton if I hadn't tried it, really liked the product, and
decided their company was worth giving my money too.

My most recent craving is some stuff from Breakin Records, never listened to
that label before, some wicked electro and acid. That actually stems from
checking out a link to Cylob's live set off of his website. But I bet none of
the local shops carry it. I really don't like internet mail order much, but I
might have to do it, because distribution in the US sucks right now.

Hey, did anyone notice THIS review on discogs, kind of harsh but at the same
time made me laugh:

 absolute.ruler - 16-Oct-04 10:01 PM
One of the most overrated/overhyped techno records ever. Really, there is
nothing special about this 12! Nothing extra-ordinary happens, there is no
'acid' whatsoever (no use of TB303 bassline), it contains just two (dance
floor) techno tracks like a few 100's were made in that era. I could easily
name (at least) 50 real acid stompers released in the same year that make the
'planet earth' track look like a LITTLE brother from a less interesting
planet. The DBX side could be praised for its rhythms/beats, but that's about
it. (The way Bell programs the drum computer has always been AMAZING, so again
nothing new happens). Conclusion: let's stick to loosing control or high
voltage for DBX. What Young is concerned, face it, he's a good DJ but as a
producer he's nothing more than average. I still can't believe that so many
discogs users actually 'want' this piece of vinyl. If u're one of them: have u
actually heard the record, did you?

What, NO 303 BASSLINE?! It's not acid at all... ;)

and given the beautiful covers i kinda wish the nr labels had a bit more
uniqueness to them instead of all being the same (very hard to read) design. if
it's a test it's the same test over and over

whatever, the music is dope, and sez alex, the alan oldham covers arrive black
white and are colored by the same layout/design guygreat stuff, he
redeemed himself then

People talk about innovation and cutting edge future music when all the
want is another version of the last thing they liked.

i didnt talk about any of that garbage. and this is a case of another version
of the last thing i didn't like

Dunno bout that, as far as I'm concerned if you can't tell which side of a

(313) DIN on Cheap records - drumless techno

2005-01-14 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

I just picked up this
http://www.discogs.com/release/94285

was wondering if the rest of the entries on discgos regarding the artist
DIN were correct?
Everything else is lumping him/her/them as trance which just doesn't fit
with the music on this little 10

I like this alot - pretty sparse instrumentation - sounds like one keyboard
and a drum - maybe an 303 as well and pretty much a heavy groove laid out
by the keyboard
the B-side (I think) is just a keyboard playing out a groove. It's drumless
techno which makes it even funkier imo.

so two questions then - who is DIN and what else has he released? as I
don't trust the discogs entries. and anyone got any favs when it comes to
drumless techno that isn't ambient?

Re: (313) future ??

2005-01-14 Thread Simon Kong

I've heard the 'try before you buy' argument before . and I certainly
think it has merit' as I have gone through a similar experience with
several pieces of software that I now own.

However in the case of vinyl or music I have a few issues, with the
suggestion that P2P will have a positive influence.

I think the first and most important is the buying culture of young
people. While file sharing has a potential to expose people to new
music, if they can find the music they like for free on a P2P network.
Why would they then try and find similar music at a much higher cost
in an specialist format (vinyl) or even CD.

As mentioned the good sounds you find on P2P will most likely never
be available at your local store. Perhaps only over the net, which
requires a credit card .. etc etc. Not impossible but more difficult
   than search and download.

While we grew up with vinyl, the general music listener under the age
of 24 will not be as familiar with it or share the same affinity with
the medium as an older person would.

   /

My assertion would be that P2P networks are an example of the future
   of music distribution.

How will new music producers develop income from their art?

   /

I think it says exciting things about live performance! as this will
be a distinct way that the artist can create income from their work.

However, as the 'underground' (313) are we interested in following
ourselves into a corner, or should we be willing to define the future
of music distribution in our own networks.

I think the free distribution of music will certainly inject life in
to a very hidden sound, but will it also turn it into a labor of
   love for producers.

I am just interested to see where people on the list
believe this will take music and the artist ' as we
  progress down this path ..

there may be some positive outcomes in the long run ..

but currently ' if your music is good .. then expect for
it to be handed around freely while people make friends

yeah - that's gotta be a mistake on Discogs part.

The Din that the Cheap release is listed under is totally different as far
as i know. The Din they're referring to as being Trance/Techno/EBM is Pupka

Re: (313) future ??

2005-01-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Believe me, I'm concerned about this too, as I work really hard to produce my
own music, and slave away at a dayjob mainly in hopes of having a little extra
cash to invest in my musical endeavours. You have some interesting points to
make. I guess that although I've been making/performing music since I was 12,
the only times of ever made any money doing it were when I chose to pursue more
commercial musical activities, such as playing piano on cruise ships
(yikes!)... I'd love to make a living being creative, but I've always had
doubts about the viability of earning a living solely by doing artistic and
less popular types of projects. It may really have to be a labor of love for
many. I'm sure that some out there with more business savvy than I can come up
with ways to make money doing it though, through performance or otherwise. If
you love it as much as I do though, you will find a way to keep doing it with
or without income!

On a different note, making money performing can also be extremely difficult,
at least for those in a local market in the US (I'm in Chicago). This isn't
just an issue with techno - I know incredibly talented jazz musicians who can't
seem to make a dime playing. It probably has to do with a mass media culture
that is constantly pushing conformity and very mainstream pop products on
everyone. Sales and image really trump talent and quality these days (maybe
that was always so), and most musicians would rather focus on their art then
spending the majority of their time marketing themselves. Not only that, but
here in Chicago there are far too many performers willing to play for almost
nothing, so a performance is really not worth very much unless you are a big
draw. Depends on the venue but it is definitely tough going.

I don't know, it might just be being stuck in the midwest USA that creates a
real sense of isolation - the only way I see to being successful is to have a
ton of money to invest in promoting yourself on a big scale, as they say it
takes money to make money. And a lot of independent artists and labels don't
have the funds to do this. Which brings us back to P2P, and the fact that
maybe for the little guy, it might improve your odds a little, and if you are
going to be doing it for free anyway, at least it's easier to reach a diverse
audience around the world.
