Perhaps. But there's a lot of sexism in the way Madonna is described as
old they don't say those things in relation to Bowie, who's also
delved into dance styles... If you survey the popular press, you pick it up.

he'd made cos that was the fad of the day you might think that slightly
 odd too.

it's not a sexism thing at all.

2005-11-17 Thread Jason Brunton
I do seem to remember him taking a good few heavy hits in both the
dance and rock press in the UK for his flirtations with A Guy Called
Gerald and Drum and Bass in general (and rightly so as it was utter
tosh) and many of those comments did revolve around him being too
oldto really understand the culture and energy behind this music. I
haven't really been paying attention to either recently so I'm not
sure what they are saying about Madonna currently but I thought that
her current track was just one step away from Eric Prydz and the
whole I can't believe they've sampled that and used it in a Trance
record sort of things- nothing against her in general though and I'd
be quite happy to sell my soul and do a few remixes for her :)

cheers

i do agree with emi now..but i think instead of them putting these obnoxious
warnings on their music they need to have an active part in providing the
market with places to hear music for free. this is something that really
gets on my tits.

people p*ss and moan about how chart music is rubbish and doesnt deserve to
be the money-making bandwagon it is but no one encourages the free listening
of random music you've never heard before. surely its in the artists
interest to let people hear them for free for a bit in order for anyone to
actually decide they like them. guess the question is where you draw the
line for a bit. i reckon there should be radio stations that have a high
turnover of new and varied music, so people cant predict whether or not they
want to record the tunes or not...kind of like john peel's idea of radio but
all the time (not just a couple of hours that people can record).

i still find it crippling moneywise to try and find music i really enjoy.
the listen before you buy idea on some online shops is great but my computer
is s**t and these shops stock limited types of music.
plus we shouldnt force people to have to spend a fortune on a computer in
order to listen to new music.

music for the masses..yeah!

I got an Australian album by an Australian artist lately with an FBI
warning

- have they totally absorbed us now, the US? Seems like Howard sold off the
whole country with that trade deal... ;)

 Alex Bond wrote:

I've tried all manner of topics today:

hahah.today

 OK try this Alex:

'The Electric Institute' (a case of 'just buy it' imho) is the first EMI
CD I've bought for over a decade. So this anti-piracy statement on the
inset of the jewel case is new to me:

This recording and artwork are protected by copyright law. Using
Internet services to distribute copyrighted music, giving away illegal
copies of discs or lending discs to others for them to copy is illegal
and does not support those involved in making this piece of music -
especially the artist. By carrying out any of these actions it has the
same effect as stealing music... etc.

Now, I personally try to be scrupulous about music as I'm sincerely
passionate about all music but especially 'advanced' electronic music.
This means I've never illegally downloaded music. However I have
received music from mates which might have been acquired in that way and
I've sometimes made copies of CDs (or digitised vinyl) for friends.

This is someone who actually *wants* to safeguard the income of
musicians and the music biz (yeah all of it, including Madonna!) - But
in EMI's view, *I'm* a crook too, as would many millions of people like
me be as well (we do exist!)

It makes me think that maybe EMI's view is extreme or unreasonable, just
plain unrealistic, maybe just plain pointless.

 What do other people think?

Alex, I'd particularly like to know your view, given that you were
 co-executive producer?

I bet you won't say if you agree with EMI or not ;-)

 Underground Resistance - Transition

This site is under construction. It will always be under construction.
If that concept is too hard to grasp, you might want to leave now. As
much as we may want definition, something solid and unchanging, that is
not reality. Who we are right now is different from who we were
yesterday, whether we like it or not. It’s the nature of the universe.
Underground Resistance is no exception. It’s no secret that
Underground Resistance has gone through a number of changes throughout
the years, some coming from inside forces and others from outside
forces, but sounds, rhythms, melodies and techniques change because, as
human beings, we change and the music you’ve heard reflects that. The
future will remain consistent in that there will be more change. This
site, if we do our jobs, will be a reflection of that as well.

When I say “we” I’m not just talking about those of us in and around
UR. You, the fan, the listener, the curious explorer, you all are
important. You are the ones who not only support us as listeners but
as allies (yes, the only reason Sony/BMG dropped Jaguar was because of
you). You tell us your stories, welcome us into your cities, show us
love, and you inspire us. And even when you disagree with us, we hear
you. You are always part of the equation.

Those who came before us and those who will come after us are also
important, but if you didn’t know that, then you’re new to a lot of
things and we sincerely hope you catch up.

I can't remember if anyone here likes Carl Craig or not, but just in
case, here is a set that was aired on beats in space last night:

http://www.beatsinspace.net/main.html

While you're there, perhaps last week's show may be interesting to you
also, Darshan Jesrani from Metro Area played some records, and played
them well.

Oh yeah, Tim Sweeney, host of beats in space, is no slouch himself.
I've never heard a bad mix set on this show. He covers many genres
over many decades in the span of any one show and does it very well.

Enjoy!

Adam

Here's a press release I just got about the new Herbert album:

 Dear All,

You are about to be given the opportunity for assisting Matthew
 Herbert with his
latest album – due for release next year. You are also about to
 being the
 opportunity to feature on it!

Below, enclosed are the instructions. Follow carefully and then
 call the number
 to leave Matthew his message.

 DEADLINE: 29.11.05

All the Best and Good Luck

 !K7 Records

Matthew Herbert and his Answering Machine:

Matthew Herbert; renowned Jazz Musician, electro-acoustic legend,
 big band
conductor, 90’s house warrior, soundtrack scorer extraordinaire,
 author of the
highly influential ‘Personal Contract for the Composition of
 Music’, speaker for
the anti-globalisation movement and the man responsible for the
 highly popular
‘Bodily Functions’ and ‘Plat du Jour’ albums is at it again…..

Matthew has a new album in the pipeline. Similar to his previous
 offerings
Matthew does not intend to steer away from his dominating, God-like
 use of the
sampler, and the rule to which his music is created; ‘the use of
 sounds that
already exist is not allowed’. A rule, which has lead to his music
 being created
through the sounds of food preparation and household appliances,
 for example,
instead of the monotonous, processed, synthetic beats of standard
 drum machines.
Thus manifesting itself into an entirely original amalgamation of
 music and
sounds. His latest release, the critically acclaimed, ‘Plat du
 Jour’ was created
over a period of 18 months, and consisted of 30,000 chickens, 3,255
 people
biting on an apple, and a cheiftan mk 10 battle tank – to list just
 a few of the
ingredients making up this epic release.

So what has Matthew in store for us now….? To be honest I don’t
 think anyone
will know until his new record is released, but for one of the up
 and coming
tracks on this yet, untitled album, he requires your assistance.
 Yes. You!

At the !K7 office we have installed a separate phone line, the
 ‘Herbert
Hotline’, if you will. Unfortunately there’s no-one at the other
 end to pick it
up, just an answering machine. Your task, should you choose to
 accept it, is to
call this number and leave a message consisting of a single sound.
 It could be
organic, vocal, mechanical, natural – even bodily. Remember you’re
 dealing with
a man who has created music from the recording of coffee cups and
 sewer systems,
so the more original the better. These sounds will be collected on
 the answering
machine and past on to the grand, musical conductor himself, who
 will fuse the
sounds together to create a grand musical cacophony that only he
 knows will
 sound like.

To add extra intrigue to this task you must under no circumstances
 state, or
give any indication as to what the sound is. Should you believe
 that your
contribution is worthy enough of credit and acknowledgement then
 you should
email us ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), and your musical contribution will be duly
 noted.

So go on, give the ‘Herbert Hotline’ a ring…..

And to add to that, if Madonna has become more conservative, I think it's
more the effect of wealth, not age. I am glad to see her defy her age -
agism is another weapon used against women, 'the old expiry date', and the
more women who don't 'act their age' the better.

I don't think you can not acknowledge what she did in the sphere of gender
politics and the representation of women, she was a subversive. That is an
integral part of what she is. The feminists in the academy were terrified of
Madonna when she first came along - she changed the paradigm of feminism. I
don't care much for the current incarnation of Madonna, the lady of the
manor, but she was cutting-edge once. What annoys me with the new album is
that she hasn't been to a disco in how long so how can she be representing
 that?
Also what happened to Guy Ritchie? He's become the Dennis Thatcher of
 film...

Left to her to her own devices and she would most likely have sunk like a
 stone
I credit her for being pretty damn savvy when it comes to business and
 trend following
she's not a trail blazer at all - it's everyone she surrounds herself with
(stylists, producers, etc.) that are the trail blazers

I can see the complaints about the music itself but the ageism

not a spring chicken by any means but I was down at Metalheadz

I spent a fair bit of time in D'n'B clubs in my late 30's and early

it's surfing safari time here! the place down the coast is booked for the

Re: (313) Madonna..

2005-11-17 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

plus - and this is my big argument against Madonna's talent (or where it
lies)

if you take a look at Bowie's top two albums from the mid to late 70s - Low
and Heroes

take a look at the writing credits -
on Low - 8 out of 11 are Bowie and only Bowie
on Heroes - 6 out of 10 are Bowie and only Bowie

take any Madonna album - ANY of them - hell take ALL of them together
you won't come up with 6 total songs that she composed herself

she NEEDS to have others write her songs - she can't go it alone - she's
incapable of doing so
and this isn't some anti-feminist stance, it's an anti-untalented stance

Maybe Bowie cheated people out of writing credits but I don't hear much
about that - anybody suing Bowie?
Madonna would get her ass kicked if she didn't give her producers credit.
Most likely because they write most of it. She works as an editor most of
the time.
I'll do this - I won't do that.

Bowie had talent - and it's waning naturally now as he has gotten older
(nothing wrong with that at all and I think it's to be expected).
Madonna is relying on others to keep her own career going - she fired
LaChappelle because he refused to make her look younger than she is for her
new video
he stated that himself - so much for her stance against ageism. You can do
anything at any age as long as you don't look older.

On the contrary, Bowie got lambasted for trying Drum n' Bass on
(I personally didn't mind it, but he forgot to eliminate Reeves
Gabrels' godawful screeching guitar until it was far too late).

The difference between Bowie (who is the best comparison to Madge)
and Madonna is that Bowie was indisputably *the* Artist Of The 70's
(just look at his albums, no one else comes close) before slowly
fading into irrelevance after Let's Dance, whereas Madonna ... erm.

Here's a press release I just got about the new Herbert album:

  Dear All,

You are about to be given the opportunity for assisting Matthew
  Herbert with his
latest album – due for release next year. You are also about to
  being the
  opportunity to feature on it!

Below, enclosed are the instructions. Follow carefully and then
  call the number
  to leave Matthew his message.

  DEADLINE: 29.11.05

All the Best and Good Luck

  !K7 Records

Matthew Herbert and his Answering Machine:

Matthew Herbert; renowned Jazz Musician, electro-acoustic legend,
  big band
conductor, 90’s house warrior, soundtrack scorer extraordinaire,
  author of the
highly influential ‘Personal Contract for the Composition of
  Music’, speaker for
the anti-globalisation movement and the man responsible for the
  highly popular
‘Bodily Functions’ and ‘Plat du Jour’ albums is at it again…..

Matthew has a new album in the pipeline. Similar to his previous
  offerings
Matthew does not intend to steer away from his dominating, God-like
  use of the
sampler, and the rule to which his music is created; ‘the use of
  sounds that
already exist is not allowed’. A rule, which has lead to his music
  being created
through the sounds of food preparation and household appliances,
  for example,
instead of the monotonous, processed, synthetic beats of standard
  drum machines.
Thus manifesting itself into an entirely original amalgamation of
  music and
sounds. His latest release, the critically acclaimed, ‘Plat du
  Jour’ was created
over a period of 18 months, and consisted of 30,000 chickens, 3,255
  people
biting on an apple, and a cheiftan mk 10 battle tank – to list just
  a few of the
ingredients making up this epic release.

So what has Matthew in store for us now….? To be honest I don’t
  think anyone
will know until his new record is released, but for one of the up
  and coming
tracks on this yet, untitled album, he requires your assistance.
  Yes. You!

At the !K7 office we have installed a separate phone line, the
  ‘Herbert
Hotline’, if you will. Unfortunately there’s no-one at the other
  end to pick it
up, just an answering machine. Your task, should you choose to
  accept it, is to
call this number and leave a message consisting of a single sound.
  It could be
organic, vocal, mechanical, natural – even bodily. Remember you’re
  dealing with
a man who has created music from the recording of coffee cups and
  sewer systems,
so the more original the better. These sounds will be collected on
  the answering
machine and past on to the grand, musical conductor himself, who
  will fuse the
sounds together to create a grand musical cacophony that only he
  knows will
  sound like.

To add extra intrigue to this task you must under no circumstances
  state, or
give any indication as to what the sound is. Should you believe
  that your
contribution is worthy enough of credit and acknowledgement then
  you should
email us ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), and your musical contribution will be duly
  noted.

So go on, give the ‘Herbert Hotline’ a ring…..

take any Madonna album - ANY of them - hell take ALL of them together

I think you have to give credit differently - she's a pop stylist.
It's normal now for pop artists to use producers. Sure it's a shame - but
the artists lose out in the end with no publishing. There's less
individualism too.
But I would say there is enough creative input in the Madonna package for
her to be an important artist. She is a facilitator like no other. She
turned 'image' into an artform.

Bowie had talent - and it's waning naturally now as he has gotten older
(nothing wrong with that at all and I think it's to be expected).
Madonna is relying on others to keep her own career going - she fired

anything at any age as long as you don't look older.

I think you'll find all women contradictory, inconsistent and insecure when
it comes to the age issue - they want to defy it, but in the end, we are in
a world in which women's value is determined by (1) weight (2) age, in the
west anyway. It's blunt but that's it.
Anyone who denies that is deluding themselves or flattering themselves to be
politically correct. Femininity depreciates - Madonna can defy that all she
wants, but how do you change thought patterns that have existed for eons.
