Hi Tom,

Before I start I dont want to get into a long
protracted argument about this (or put on your hit
list incase I come over to the festival) ;-))

I just think that the last couple of years remix
output has been very formulaic - I have all of them so
it hasnt put me off buying them. But they have a
pattern, they have a similar beat, which gradually
winds its way up with a hook from the original vocal
(if there was one) and then it reaches a crescendo
just when the needle hits the run out groove.

And it not me hating on CC, its just a general
observation.

Cheers
BT

Hmm I dunno Tom, some of these C2 mixes are very formulaic. Things like
that Darkness rework (Max Mix) he did, and things like that Xpress2 Kill
100 track, Terry Brookes remix, that Delia and Gavin Mix, even that
Falling Up mix.

Don't get me wrong though, I still be em all but they are a little
C2-by-numbers.

Yeah, I'm with Tom on this! Strange one from you Dave! :)

I tried to piece together some recent C2 remixes in my mind and I can't
see such a pattern - although strictly speaking, BT wasn't calling one -
that was Antonio.

The last few which stood out for me are that remix of 'See Mi Yah',
'Busted Trees', and not forgetting 'Tides' of course. And finally, quite
recently that remix of 'Relevee' by Delia Gonzales and Gavin Russom.

It's possible your speculation has some grain of truth but it seems
doubtful really. Also, note, I'm not saying that there are some remixes
he's done which I'm not that impressed by: I thought 'Falling Up' (his
remix of it) was just slightly above-average, in the end. Likeable, but
not brilliant.

this one sounds like the original but with a nasty tweaked 101 line

See Mi Yah

this one is more minimal techno to my ears

Falling up

cant even remember what the TB sounded like, only that it wasnt very

Well, I listed that one as being one of his formulaic releases but I
love the bit later on when the the bongos (or whatever they're called)
and pianos come in. Ace.

The way that track builds is very similar to the other tracks I list though.

I do love the ones you mentioned though, they sound very unique and
distinctive. Still, the last C2 remix I bought was the Delia Gavim
one, that piano breakdown always gives me the chills!

i mean if by formula you mean the guy makes tracks that build
instead of just loopy tracks, i guess thats true. but if you wanna
hear formulaic dance music (Stuff that literally sounds exactly the

If anyone hasn't heard it it's at http://www.myspace.com/arilbrikha

It has a similar chord progression, but not the same. Not a bad track
but Aril's in danger of being embraced by the progressive DJs for
stuff like this. Maybe Salsa and Dickweed will pick up on it.

Chymera has a track that originally sampled You Can Go Your Own Way
by Fleetwood Mac. I advised him to drop the sample because the track
didn't need it, but he still drops the sample when he plays it out.

Never underestimate the power of Fleetwood Mac. I saw them live in
1976, and with the exception of a few Christine McVie weepers, it was
a full on dance party.

And if you're into collecting and using sample CDs, the Mick Fleetwood
sample CD is insanely great.

I kept my mouth shut the first time around ... but ... seriously.

That chord progression, in whatever variation, is not something I want
to hear in a techno track, especially on a weak sounding synth sound.
Maybe in some pseudo-GangOfFour discopunk hipster version with lots of
guitar and silly lyrics making fun of dance parties I could handle it.
But I can't listen to it without laughing. I don't know what to call
it, prog, trance, whatever, but I can't even listen to the whole thing
in one sitting.

Every time I hear that chord progression, it reminds of me of early
90's rave music, and also Good Vibrations by Marky Mark and the
Funky Bunch, and Haddaway What Is Love. It's the ultimate dance
party anthem chord progression. Kind of like the Louie Louie chord
progression was for rock bands of days gone by.

As far as Swedish music, I'll take new Adam Beyer and Par Grindvik any
day over this Aril track.

Yikes, hate to say it, but the ideas presented in that blog I found
very disturbing. Why would the copyright holder have greater rights

I've heard a selection of the tracks and there are some absolute
corkers, including some stuff that is maybe a step away from what
people might expect from a Beatdown compilation. Don't want to spoil
the surprise so I'll limit myself to saying that the first one has a
track by Smith Hall (Delano and Derwin Hall) that has potential to be
pretty big in a Bar-A-Thym kind of way. I really like it.

In related good news, Mike Clark is back in the studio.
