(313) dj hell in the sunday nytimes:
well. . . Neglected Beats From Belgium By NEIL STRAUSS If you were asked to name your favorite musical style of the last quarter-century, you probably wouldn't mention Belgian new beat. The name itself smacks of trend marketing, as does that of the Belgian genre it grew out of, electronic body music. And, truth be told, new beat slipped through America faster than a broke student jumping a subway turnstile. The music was concocted in the days just before techno was exported from Detroit to Britain in the late 80's, when the electronic music white teenagers were dancing to was a mix of industrial, house, Eurodisco and new wave. New beat took all those pieces, smoothed out the edges and slowed it all down into cold yet sultry sequenced dance-floor anthems. advance this cause is DJ Hell's Electronicbody-Housemusic (React), a two-CD mix set. Years before the word electroclash ever came into use, DJ Hell (Helmut Geier), one of Munich's leading disc jockeys, formed a record company, International Deejay Gigolos. It has become one of the leading labels of its kind, releasing an array of retro-minded electro singles that walk the line between quality and kitsch (best represented on the compilation American Gigolo Mix). Taste and depth of knowledge are DJ Hell's fortes, amply shown on this mix set. The first CD focuses on house and electro, with pioneers like Derrick L. Carter and Bobby Konders mingling with acts who have newly arrived at dance via rock, like Mount Sims and The Juan MacLean. The second disc is the more interesting, looking back to the electronic body music of the 80's, which has dated remarkably well. Included are the lock-and-load rhythms of Headhunter and Masterhit from the Belgian industrial band Front 242 and the hammer-on-metal beat of The Bog by their fellow Belgians, Bigod 20. The early-80's minimal electro-soul of the German act Liaisons Dangereuses is also a nice surprise, along with the industrial dance music of Nitzer Ebb and Chris Cosey. (313) Sad news
Stereolab's Mary Hansen Dead at 36 Ryan Schreiber reports: Mary Hansen, singer and guitarist for the experimental pop group Stereolab, died on Monday after being struck by a car while riding her bicycle in London. Martin Pike, co-owner of Stereolab's Duophonic Super 45's imprint with Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier, was extremely saddened by the loss when we spoke with him via telephone this morning. It's incredibly tragic, said Pike. We're all going to miss her. It's just a bit too soon. Even though it happened on Monday, all of us only [recently] found out. We're all still very numbed by it all. The band's official statement reads: The suddenness of her death has shocked the band. Mary was a special person. Our thoughts are with her family and friends who will miss her greatly. Hansen, originally from near Brisbane, Australia, joined Stereolab in 1992 after the release of Peng!. She also contributed vocals to bands such as Moonshake and The Wolfhounds, and made appearances on releases by Mouse on Mars, Brokeback, and the High Llamas, whose Sean O'Hagan has been responsible for brass and string arrangements on many a Stereolab LP. Mary Hansen was 36.

Re: (313) Who used the 303 first..

On Wed, 27 Nov 2002, Toby Frith wrote: This is from a thread on the forums of www.discogs.com = Re: Who discovered the 'Acid House' squiggle on the TB303? I always thought it was Spanky and Pierre but nope, it was a UK band called Section 25 on Factory Records (New Order,Joy Division,Happy Mondays etc). They were one of the first people in the UK to buy one (the TB 303 was only available to buy between 1982 and 1983 - only 20,000 were made!). Anyway - just before Section 25 went on a major North American tour they purchased a 303, did a bit of 'tweaking', found the squiggle and incorporated it into their live set - specifically 'Looking from a Hilltop' (one of Derrick May and Juan Atkins all time favourite tracks, and a massive Paradise Garage and Warehouse favourite) and 'Beating Heart' which had an extended remix made using the 303 in 1983! Section 25 toured the States extensively between 1983 and 1985 specifically Chicago, Detroit and New York showcasing this new sound and tracks from these dates can be heard on their 'Deus Ex Machina' live CD. The version of 'Hilltop' sounds totally Acid House - they're using an 808, 303 and a Juno 106 which became a standard Acid set-up by the Chicago crew. So this story about the 'squiggle' being discovered in Pierre/Spank's bedroom is totally blown out of the water! For more details go to www.section25.com and check out their biography - specifically 18. RE: (313) books on techno
There's a book, I think I might have mentioned it a long time ago, called What Kind of House Party is This? Berkshire, England: Mind In You Publishing, from 1995. published by a British fellow named Jonathan Fleming who had little knowledge of electronic dance music in the states, but an interest nonetheless. and he travelled to chicago and detroit and new york doing interviews with a huge variety of house/techno/garage musicians including all the usual pioneering suspects. the interviews are very candid and unusual, and include a number of what I think would be considered shocking (to 313 and others) statements. I'm a bit suspicious of the factuality of it, being that its self-published and I've never heard anything else about the author, but it seems for the most part pretty legitimate. I have no idea unfortunately of how to get a hold of it other than borrowing. It's not a great narrative of techno's history, but it's some good and definitely unique insight. ben On Mon, 25 Nov 2002, Kim B wrote: Thanks for pointing out some books to read on the evolution of Techno. The opening chapter which he refers to as the beginning is about the Detroit Three: Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins and Derrick May I found his writing style to be quite entertaining. He charts the timelines of Techno, House, Garage, Trance, Jungle, Gabber...etc. from North America to Europe. There are a lot of quotes from electronic music pioneers which he uses liberally throught his work. He covers not only partying, but radio stations, pressing, labels as well as style (like the mode of dress, and paraphenlia...) A great read IMHO. cheers K. _ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. The authors are very much concerned with promoting DJing as an extension of a love of music and not a career path. They just recognise that a lot of people start for the *wrong* reasons and need some pointers. Trust me, it's worth reading. The authors know their onions (even if they are Dad house mafiosa :-). TOM I'm sure the only way you can learn how to mix is just do it yourself and keep trying but I'm sure it's entirely possible to learn some useful tips on programming and the business by reading a few books about it - the more input you get from as many people as possible the more chance you have of becoming a good DJ surely? What I don't like is reading books telling me how to become a successful DJ - I don't need to be told what music to play and how to get gigs in big clubs - surely most people DJ because it's fun, not because they envisage a career and a jetset lifestyle? -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, October 23, 2002 4:44 PM To: Langsman, Marc Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Essential reading... RE: [313] don't make estate tax permanent (not off-topic)
the estate tax doesn't even come close to affecting the middle class. you need to make upwards of $200,000 for it to be levied upon you. whether gw has it in mind or not, such activity ends up affecting minorities disproportionately, because they are clustered in lower tax brackets and do not see any repeal. please consider reading Thomas Sugrue's The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit. It is rife with such examples of government policy intended to benefit large corporations and wealthy individuals who will ostensibly then pay the community back in kind by providing jobs, funding the arts, and remaining loyal to the region that gave them a break. but they never do, and this story is a big part of detroit's situation. tax breaks for the rich will never ever trickle down to the poor. abolishing the estate tax is a true waste of your money as a taxpayer. ben On Wed, 12 Jun 2002 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yeah, but isn't what is really hurting agricultural families is corporate farming? it will also prevent the current middle class from acquiring the wealth they need to make the leap to being rich. ! That's really funny that you call it timeless. I just reviewed that record for next week's dustedmag.com and the review was about it being a timeless album. It is, though. It's really funky in a way that doesn't scream 2002! The samples are taken from broadcasts picked up on a shortwave radio in northern canada, and transformed into pseudo-house, pseudo-giorgio moroder dance hits. I second the high recommendation! More on the topic of detroit, i just got the arpanet record. Upon one listen I was very pleased! RE: [313] Baby Ford / Zip
I don't agree with this. In terms of substances, illegal drugs are illegal everywhere, more or less regardless of the city you're in. any number of individual and cultural factors lead people to choice between different kinds of drugs when they go out. to me, that's just one among a great number of reasons why demand for certain styles of dj-ing goes way beyond alcohol age limits. ben On Thu, 16 May 2002 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I think there actually is some truth to this, and it's not necessarily a bad reflection on European DJs. The most plausible theory I've heard is that it's to do with the higher age limit for buying alcohol in America. Americans from 18-21, when they go out to a club, can't (legally) drink, and so to them it's more of a directly musical experience - they want a DJ to actually keep them interested throughout the night, and are less fussed about being able to dance, so a culture has evolved whereby American DJs with good track selection but no deck skills often don't go down well with the 18-21 club audience, which is sober enough to pay attention to what's going on. In Europe, the younger audience is more likely to be drunk, and therefore less likely to notice an unoriginal or even slightly bad mix - they want to dance, not watch DJs perform. If any evidence could be found backing up this theory, it might involve looking at the more 'debauched' scenes in US dance music history, such as the Loft and the Paradise Garage, where copious amounts of drugs and drink led to a culture where crowds revered DJs whose mixing skills were actually pretty crappy. I've seen certain Detroit bass DJs, with excellent skills, lose the crowd here really badly because people don't really want to watch some insane skills, and find it hard to keep the rhythm with a DJ who's constantly doing tricks and never letting a record run for a while. In the sphere of techno, particularly, the whole notion of a techno DJ doing deck tricks has always been a slight novelty - I remember seeing Claude Young in London about eight years ago, and people were shocked into silence even by backspins, let alone beat-juggling or crab scratching! I loved it myself... but there just isn't the call for hotshot deck tricks in the DJ trade over here, really. The main questions seem to be, i) does he choose good tracks?, and ii) can he play for two straight hours with no major f*ckups? Brendan -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 16 May 2002 16:40 I think fans of Detroit techno get spoiled by the incredible skills Detroit DJs have. [313] Detroit techno thesis
Dear 313, I have recently (today) finished the rough draft of my thesis on Detroit techno. It deals with some of the things that are brought up so often on this list, particularly race. I interviewed some incredible people including Dan Sicko, Brendan Gillen, and Anthony Shakir, and I dug through a lot of old archives and microfilms. It can get kind of theoretical at points, but I guess that's the way it goes with academic work. Still, I did my best to make it readable. Please consider this my contribution to the many threads on techno and race. And if you feel like it, let me know what you think. I'm open to revisions and suggestions. http://www.umich.edu/~btausig/thesis.htm sincere thanks to everyone, ben tausig - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The record executive behind Digable Planets told them they were not hard translate black enough for hip-hop. So Juan is in the same position.. I don't have time to break this down anymore but Juan is not crying he's simply commenting on the truth; the music business is run by a bunch of culturally biased and/or ignorant people who have definite ideas about the value of the music based on their racist crap. if anyone does not understand where I'm coming from I will make one more post I don't have a lot of time to keep repeating this tired story. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] data general=== ==www.umich.edu/~btausig=== [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
