There is no way that this album won't impact the more dance-dedicated
strain of electronic music, and intensely if justice there be.

But I think it's important to find out: does Shake like it?

(313) pc laptops

Hi:

Sorry for the inane, fairly off-topic question. You can reply privately
perhaps, to spare the rest of the list.

Does anyone have recommendations for pc laptops that are good for making
electronic music? I know Macs are infinitely more popular, but with
Max/MSP out for windows I'm kind of on the fence. And Buzz, which i like,
doesn't exist for Macs.

Second that.

Another good choice:

Akron, Oh.

Several excellent junkyards, Swenson's, Akron music, etc.

ok i found Kodwo Eshun: More Brilliant than the Sun to be pretty good. tho
i didn't know all the music discussed which was a disadvantage. also stuff
in there about alice coltrane which is interesting given carl craig's
direction i guess. the style isn't for everyone but once you get into it
it's inspiring in a funny kind of way. a cd with all the tunes discussed on
there would have been a killer addition.

i sort of had the same feeling when i read it 2 or 3 years ago, actually it
pointed me towards records that are now some of my favorites. it's great as
 a reference-book, when out shopping.
i've read it again a year and a half ago, and that was a pleasant surprise,
as it read a LOT easier. [took me about 2 months to finish the first time,
and less then a week on the beach the second time].
and i've been thinking about compiling a cd, to accompany the book, sort of
chronologically, so you can actually hear what he's talking about. and add a
booklet with pictures of the sleeves he mentiones would have been a nice
addition aswell. [are you writing all this down mister publisher sir?]

i myself have started on 'Before Motown, jazz in detroit 1920-1960' after it
got mentioned on this list a couple of months ago [then found out that i had
allready saved an earlier post about the book 2 years prior august 6, 2001]
and 'A Love Supreme/the creation of John Coltrane's classic album' by Ashley
Kahn. i enjoy reading 'A Love Supreme' more, but that's probably because
'Before Motown' is written really fact upon fact, sort of like a history
book [probably because it is] but both are very interesting, and highly
recommended. especially because both writers have had the fortune to
interview many people from that era, so the insight comes straight from the
source. every book about these same subjects, will probably have to really
in large part on what's written in these books.

and i saw another book mentioned by someone on the deephousepage
 messageboard:
'Black Machine Music Galactic Soul, From Disco, House to Detroit Techno'
by Tsutomu Noda, anyone know this and care to enlighten all us
ultra-313-techno-geeks if it's worth buying for the content, or if it's just
something you gotta have because it says '...Detroit Techno' in the title?

Your guiltless Sunday night exploitation of the long weekend gets a
little saucier with this rare and exclusive New York appearance of Vladislav
Delay and his alter-ego Luomo. Under this guise, the Finnish producer
supplants avant chops and blips for smooth digital house. Lengthy, twilight

Neglected Beats From Belgium
By NEIL STRAUSS

If you were asked to name your favorite musical style of the last
quarter-century, you probably wouldn't mention Belgian new beat. The name
itself smacks of trend marketing, as does that of the Belgian genre it
grew out of, electronic body music. And, truth be told, new beat slipped
through America faster than a broke student jumping a subway turnstile.

The music was concocted in the days just before techno was exported from
Detroit to Britain in the late 80's, when the electronic music white
teenagers were dancing to was a mix of industrial, house, Eurodisco and
new wave. New beat took all those pieces, smoothed out the edges and
slowed it all down into cold yet sultry sequenced dance-floor anthems.
advance this cause is DJ Hell's Electronicbody-Housemusic (React), a
two-CD mix set. Years before the word electroclash ever came into use, DJ
Hell (Helmut Geier), one of Munich's leading disc jockeys, formed a record
company, International Deejay Gigolos. It has become one of the leading
labels of its kind, releasing an array of retro-minded electro singles
that walk the line between quality and kitsch (best represented on the
compilation American Gigolo Mix).

Taste and depth of knowledge are DJ Hell's fortes, amply shown on this mix
set. The first CD focuses on house and electro, with pioneers like Derrick
L. Carter and Bobby Konders mingling with acts who have newly arrived at
dance via rock, like Mount Sims and The Juan MacLean. The second disc is
the more interesting, looking back to the electronic body music of the
80's, which has dated remarkably well. Included are the lock-and-load
rhythms of Headhunter and Masterhit from the Belgian industrial band
Front 242 and the hammer-on-metal beat of The Bog by their fellow
Belgians, Bigod 20. The early-80's minimal electro-soul of the German act
Liaisons Dangereuses is also a nice surprise, along with the industrial
dance music of Nitzer Ebb and Chris Cosey. Finally, just to ensure that
no 80's white club subculture goes neglected, DJ Hell caters to the Goth
set with a remake of the Bauhaus song Bela Lugosi's Dead.

Stereolab's Mary Hansen Dead at 36

Ryan Schreiber reports: Mary Hansen, singer and guitarist for the
experimental pop group Stereolab, died on Monday after being struck by a
car while riding her bicycle in London. Martin Pike, co-owner of
Stereolab's Duophonic Super 45's imprint with Tim Gane and Laetitia
Sadier, was extremely saddened by the loss when we spoke with him via
telephone this morning. It's incredibly tragic, said Pike. We're all
going to miss her. It's just a bit too soon. Even though it happened on
Monday, all of us only [recently] found out. We're all still very numbed
by it all. The band's official statement reads: The suddenness of her
death has shocked the band. Mary was a special person. Our thoughts are
with her family and friends who will miss her greatly.

Hansen, originally from near Brisbane, Australia, joined Stereolab in 1992
after the release of Peng!. She also contributed vocals to bands such as
Moonshake and The Wolfhounds, and made appearances on releases by Mouse on
Mars, Brokeback, and the High Llamas, whose Sean O'Hagan has been
responsible for brass and string arrangements on many a Stereolab LP. Mary
Hansen was 36.

Re: Who discovered the 'Acid House' squiggle on the TB303?

I always thought it was Spanky and Pierre but nope, it was a UK band called
Section 25 on Factory Records (New Order,Joy Division,Happy Mondays etc).
They were one of the first people in the UK to buy one (the TB 303 was only
available to buy between 1982 and 1983 - only 20,000 were made!).
Anyway - just before Section 25 went on a major North American tour they
purchased a 303, did a bit of 'tweaking', found the squiggle and
incorporated it into their live set - specifically 'Looking from a Hilltop'
(one of Derrick May and Juan Atkins all time favourite tracks, and a massive
Paradise Garage and Warehouse favourite) and 'Beating Heart' which had an
extended remix made using the 303 in 1983!

Section 25 toured the States extensively between 1983 and 1985 specifically
Chicago, Detroit and New York showcasing this new sound and tracks from
these dates can be heard on their 'Deus Ex Machina' live CD. The version of
'Hilltop' sounds totally Acid House - they're using an 808, 303 and a Juno
106 which became a standard Acid set-up by the Chicago crew.
So this story about the 'squiggle' being discovered in Pierre/Spank's
bedroom is totally blown out of the water!

For more details go to www.section25.com and check out their biography -
specifically 18. 'Second US Tour' - and their live kit list.

RE: (313) books on techno

There's a book, I think I might have mentioned it a long time ago, called

What Kind of House Party is This? Berkshire, England: Mind In You
Publishing, from 1995.

published by a British fellow named Jonathan Fleming who had little
knowledge of electronic dance music in the states, but an interest
nonetheless. and he travelled to chicago and detroit and new york doing
interviews with a huge variety of house/techno/garage musicians including
all the usual pioneering suspects.

the interviews are very candid and unusual, and include a number of what I
think would be considered shocking (to 313 and others) statements. I'm a
bit suspicious of the factuality of it, being that its self-published and
I've never heard anything else about the author, but it seems for the most
part pretty legitimate. I have no idea unfortunately of how to get a hold
of it other than borrowing.

It's not a great narrative of techno's history, but it's some good and
definitely unique insight.

The opening chapter which he refers to as the beginning is about the
Detroit Three: Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins and Derrick May I found his
writing style to be quite entertaining. He charts the timelines of Techno,
House, Garage, Trance, Jungle, Gabber...etc. from North America to Europe.
There are a lot of quotes from electronic music pioneers which he uses
 liberally throught his work.
He covers not only partying, but radio stations, pressing, labels as well as
style (like the mode of dress, and paraphenlia...)
 A great read IMHO.

suggesting this is blackmail material is insane, they are some of the
dopest melodic techno songs ever made..i dont think morgan looks down on the
old stuff just moved on, and really i think the stuff he is doing on
metamorphic lately and recent remixes arent that much removed from his old
 sound...

the only one morgan did that is blackmail material is under the name ghee,
a track that came out on an australian label and is some really goofy
stuff...im probably gonna get in trouble for mentioning it!

darshan had a few solo releases as well...he has come a long way..

[313] james duncan/metro area in nyc

2002-09-13 Thread Data General

So I went to that show last night, and really really liked James Duncan.
Morgan Geist played for a bit, and he's super impressive, but James Duncan
was pulling out some really weird, seemingly old records that I didn't
recognize at all.

The tracks he played were really soulful, often with female vocals, and
the music kind of sounded like a cross between michael jackson and YMO.
Not quite disco, but I couldn't put my finger on what era or place these
songs came from.

Is anyone familiar with him in general? Does he produce? Know anything
about the records he drops?

thanks,
ben

 Hey all-
I know it's a big and open question to ask but I'm curious to hear who - in
your own opinion- is the most soulful DJ. What I mean is - for you who is
the one whose got it and manages to bring it to your heart every time.
And I'm talking only DJs here.

Now I know that people will want to argue about what is soulful and what
 isn't - personally I don't care - and I really don't want to hear any
negative comments please - I'm just interested in the positive. I don't
want to see this go down as a Richie Hawtin doesn't play soul music
thread - if your grandma is the most soulful let me know and I'll respect
your opinion. Give some examples or details if you want.

I'm not looking to stir up controversy - just want to see who makes the
 list(s).

Please keep this a fun discussion (argue off list).

RE: [313] don't make estate tax permanent (not off-topic)

2002-06-12 Thread Data General
the estate tax doesn't even come close to affecting the middle class. you
need to make upwards of $200,000 for it to be levied upon you.

whether gw has it in mind or not, such activity ends up affecting
minorities disproportionately, because they are clustered in lower tax
brackets and do not see any repeal.

please consider reading Thomas Sugrue's The Origins of the Urban Crisis:
Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit. It is rife with such examples of
government policy intended to benefit large corporations and wealthy
individuals who will ostensibly then pay the community back in kind by
providing jobs, funding the arts, and remaining loyal to the region that
gave them a break.

but they never do, and this story is a big part of detroit's situation.
tax breaks for the rich will never ever trickle down to the poor.

abolishing the estate tax is a true waste of your money as a taxpayer.

sometime soon, the senate is going to vote on whether to make the repeal
of the estate tax permanent. this tax, paid only by the wealthiest of the
wealthy upon inheritance, if repealed permanently would further increase
the gap between the wealthy and the rest of us.

i don't usually ask people on the various lists i participate in to call

NOT be repealed permanently, please contact your senator:

That's really funny that you call it timeless. I just reviewed that
record for next week's dustedmag.com and the review was about it being a
timeless album.

It is, though. It's really funky in a way that doesn't scream 2002!
The samples are taken from broadcasts picked up on a shortwave radio in
northern canada, and transformed into pseudo-house, pseudo-giorgio moroder
dance hits.

I second the high recommendation!

More on the topic of detroit, i just got the arpanet record. Upon one

I don't agree with this. In terms of substances, illegal drugs are
illegal everywhere, more or less regardless of the city you're in. any
number of individual and cultural factors lead people to choice between
different kinds of drugs when they go out.

to me, that's just one among a great number of reasons why demand for
certain styles of dj-ing goes way beyond alcohol age limits.

ben

On Thu, 16 May 2002 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I think there actually is some truth to this, and it's not necessarily a bad
reflection on European DJs. The most plausible theory I've heard is that
it's to do with the higher age limit for buying alcohol in America.
Americans from 18-21, when they go out to a club, can't (legally) drink, and
so to them it's more of a directly musical experience - they want a DJ to
actually keep them interested throughout the night, and are less fussed
about being able to dance, so a culture has evolved whereby American DJs
with good track selection but no deck skills often don't go down well with
the 18-21 club audience, which is sober enough to pay attention to what's
going on. In Europe, the younger audience is more likely to be drunk, and
therefore less likely to notice an unoriginal or even slightly bad mix -
they want to dance, not watch DJs perform.

If any evidence could be found backing up this theory, it might involve
looking at the more 'debauched' scenes in US dance music history, such as
the Loft and the Paradise Garage, where copious amounts of drugs and drink
led to a culture where crowds revered DJs whose mixing skills were actually
pretty crappy. I've seen certain Detroit bass DJs, with excellent skills,
lose the crowd here really badly because people don't really want to watch
some insane skills, and find it hard to keep the rhythm with a DJ who's
constantly doing tricks and never letting a record run for a while.

In the sphere of techno, particularly, the whole notion of a techno DJ doing
deck tricks has always been a slight novelty - I remember seeing Claude
Young in London about eight years ago, and people were shocked into silence
even by backspins, let alone beat-juggling or crab scratching! I loved it
myself... but there just isn't the call for hotshot deck tricks in the DJ
trade over here, really. The main questions seem to be, i) does he choose
good tracks?, and ii) can he play for two straight hours with no major
 f*ckups?

whoa! how'd you make the jump from Moby to PetShopBoys??
To tie it all together: word is that the PetShopBoys have a video/song
 about a
gay rapper who is an Eminem satire. I'm not making this up. and isnt PSB
playing the State Theater in Detroit? glanced at the schedule briefly on
MTV.com. thats where I got the gay rapper info thingy too :^)

Yes, but have you seen what Eminem raps about not only Moby but
 'techno'?

I almost posted it but I didn't wanna spark off another 313 debate.

He should know better with his connections.

Yeah. Wasn't he spotted at The Wizard gig in Daytwah?

I'm interested to hear the new Moby. I'd hate to revisit the thread from
 the
last time around, but he can make good music and it would be nice to see
 him
veer back towards his roots. I played his remix of the Pet Shop Boys
Miserablism a couple of weeks ago, and I periodically revisit his
Ambient album. All-told, I love his political persona, even if I
 haven't
liked his music in a while.

Anyone else see The Pet Shop Boys are playing St. Andrews (I think) on
 the
Monday of DEMF? I think it conflicts with the finale. Such poor timing...
I'd love to see Neil Tennant wandering about Hart Plaza in a Behavior-era
  opera gown. :)

Definitely. Shake's out on his own and, to my mind, the best example of

is more important anyway. I'm still looking for a copy of Waiting For

Re: [313] Adult 7

2002-03-15 Thread Data General
I found the new 7 a bit disappointing. One of the tracks, modern
romantics, is an (imo) inferior mix of a plasma co. song and the other
one just didn't catch me.

But then I also heard a 12, which i think is also new (i don't own it,
someone played it for me) and it was outstanding! It had a Solvent remix,
the original track, and one or two other remixes as well.

Mine turned up yesterday; only got a chance for a quick listen last night -
it may start a new craze for electro line-dancing! I liked it, but its not
 their best by a stretch.
My copy of Every Dog #3 also arrived, and on first listen it just about
justifies the outrageous price tag. It pretty much carries on from the
previous volumes - definite shades of R=R in there

 Sean.

[313] Detroit techno thesis

2002-03-12 Thread Data General
Dear 313,

I have recently (today) finished the rough draft of my thesis on Detroit
techno. It deals with some of the things that are brought up so often on
this list, particularly race. I interviewed some incredible people
including Dan Sicko, Brendan Gillen, and Anthony Shakir, and I dug through
a lot of old archives and microfilms.

It can get kind of theoretical at points, but I guess that's the way it
goes with academic work. Still, I did my best to make it readable.
Please consider this my contribution to the many threads on techno and
race. And if you feel like it, let me know what you think. I'm open to
revisions and suggestions.

sincere thanks to everyone,

 the spotlight.

No one is denying anyone their right to listen to what they want but don't
 forget the history.

I spoke with a Black rocker in NYC and he told me that many A R men
 didn't
know what to do with Black guys playing soulful rock music.

The record executive behind Digable Planets told them they were not hard
 translate black enough for hip-hop.

So Juan is in the same position..

I don't have time to break this down anymore but Juan is not crying he's
simply commenting on the truth; the music business is run by a bunch of
culturally biased and/or ignorant people who have definite ideas about the
value of the music based on their racist crap.

if anyone does not understand where I'm coming from I will make one more
 post
I don't have a lot of time to keep repeating this tired story.

Re: [313] electro stuff

2002-02-21 Thread Data General
It's a good mixture of mostly old but some new.

I'm pretty sure there's an official list online somewhere.

some of the great tracks on there:

Pluton and Humanoids-World Invasion
A Number of Names -Sharivari
Alden Tyrell-Love Explosion
Charly-Spacerwoman
Alexander Robotnik Problems D'Amour
Klein and MBO Dirty Talk
???Robot is Systematic
Sun La Shan Catch
Q-The Voice of Q
Giorgio Moroder The Chase
Man Parrish Manmade

Not all Italian disco, though certainly leaning that way.

On the subject of that i-f mix, does anyone know if there are plans for
more panama records releases?

that's just hit the shops (actually from nov 01) has a feature on

[313] R.U.R.

2001-11-29 Thread Data General
Dear 313,

I composed some electronic music for a performance of the play R.U.R which
is happening this weekend. If anyone lives in or near ann arbor and is
interested in coming, read below. It's free, as well.

ben

Robots of the world, unite and see this play! Karel Capek's play R.U.R.
will be performed Nov. 30, and Dec. 1 and 2 at the Media Union's Video
Studio on North Campus. Written in 1920's Czechoslovakia, this sci-fi play
introduced the word and concept of robot to the world. R.U.R. expresses
anxieties of increased mass production and industrialization in its
contemporary society with a hilarious and intelligent plot.

Fri and Sat at 8 pm and Sun at 2.

Because this is a univeristy event, it is free of charge!

Directed by Rebecca I. Fried, with an original electronic musical score by
Benjamin Tausig.

This production is in association with the RC Drama Concentration and WCBN,
FM Ann Arbor.

Come see what happens when Robots take over the world!

their cds are great and perhaps ocassionally rare.
