Re: [313] 313?
I totally love this Derrick May live in Belgium mix I pulled offa Napster. Also the Rolando mix CD. As for not-really-313 mix CD's: A Basement Jaxx Radio 1 mix I have from '99 is hot, and a drum n' bass mix that DJ Empress (NYC) hit me off with last week rocks-- relentless and beautifully mixed. Jorge now i know that someone will argue that this stuff is somehow relevant to 313 but i don't give a shit. it's an irrevalent argument. so to help the list enter a new and exciting era of on-topic discussion, i will ask the question what is your favorite mixtape or live dj set on cd and why? -sam __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [313] Di Giorgio
Yeah - DiGiorgio rocked it last night. Nice to see a big turnout for the event. and thanks for the good review! I have a few tracks on SUNRUNNERS as Duermo, and I'm proud to be on ism. Swingsett and J Warrin - the label heads - are two of the most musically forward thinking people I know, and I think it reflects in the label's output. Watch out, cuz NYC's coming with the new stuff in a big way. peace, Jorge That party was probably thrown by ism records (ism/Esho Thursdays 121 St.Marks Place near Ave. A)... check out their new CD Sun Runners mixed by DJ Swingsett. Very cool mix of deep house sounds, freestyle breaks, dub. Here's my review of it (http://www.toastmag.com/24/rev_04.html#rev14): Various Artists Sun Runners (ism Records) New York's DJ Swingsett showcases some previously unreleased tunes from his, and J.Warrin's, ism Records. Sun Runners is an eclectic mix of sambas, East Coast jazz/funk/house blends, floor rumbling drum & bass, fresh breakbeat excursions, Japanese Koto music, and dub that would drive the Mad Professor crazy. No, you didn't read it wrong I did list Japanese Koto music. That would happen to be "Vida Blue" by Beatboxes at Dawn. It's a weave of big and mental boom-boom beats and the gentle court music of Japan and it's that kind of stick-your-neck-out approach that makes the ism Record label a hot spot for innovation. Wally & Swinsett's "Dropera" pushes the beats into weirdness until you think it's almost lost the plot, then they drop a big ol' bassline in and it just jells into funky chunks. Dub tracks, like Motopsyco and Cassien's "Water Tree," are used to dunk listeners deeper into the mix. Actually, it's difficult to call any one track dub, house, or breakbeat. DJ Swingsett and J. Warrin have made it their purpose to break out of the mental walls that confine creativity, exploration, and good music. With ism Records, we've got plenty of good music in our future. Remember how Godzilla would throw a train into the side of a mountain? I have only been to one (1) of Juan's sets where he didn't wreck. Re: [313] live on the puters
If it's crowd reaction you're talking about, setting up long breakdowns and pumping your fist in the air when the kick comes in seems to work pretty well, even if it's a cheap trick. The true heads aren't swayed by cheap theatrics, but then they'll be with you if the tracks are tight, even if all you do is hide under a table and tweak knobs. kent williams -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.cornwarning.com -- Iowa's First Techno Record Label http://www.mp3.com/chaircrusher -- tunes I'm doing my first ever set in a couple of weeks, Powerbook playing my tracks straight off Logic and tweaking them live with Pluggo. Re: [313] MAKING traffic ON topic
i think in the past people used to go out to listen to music and perhaps to take some drugs. today, many of my generation go out to take drugs and perhaps to listen to some music. peter A valid point. I also, going back to Lester's question, think the particular drugs that are used owe more to an age difference. The few places I go to here in NY - mainly deep/tracky house nights - cater to an "older" crowd (late 20's to mid-30's) who prefer drinking or toking than being "off their heads" on E or K. I also don't see anyone crashed out in front of the speakers on these nights, whereas it's still a common sight at some of the bigger techno nights. Though that seems to be changing, too (for the better). E in NY at the moment appears to be more the party drug of choice for those who didn't grow up in / with dance culture. I know less and less people who grew up with this culture who continue to use it. Re: [313] musical question ... minimal classical
Could anyone please point me in the direction of some kind of minimal experimnetal classical music? It would be greatly appreciated. thx. there's so many ways to go with this: Schoenberg, Reich, Glass, uh... Gavin Bryars BUT start off with Erik Satie. You can get decent budget priced Naxos versions of his complete piano works at most big chain stores. Challenging, lovely stuff - and a big influence on people like Eno who in turn has influenced people like D. May, who in turn is one of the reasons for this list (wanna keep topics in 313-land, ya know). ; ) Satie's influence is *all over* contemporary electronics based music. peace, Jorge --+++--- SUN RUNNERS compilation on *ism records* Out November 21. And if you haven't checked out My Bloody Valentine, it is more ahead of it's time than most (if not ALL) techno IMHO and i don't think anyone will ever match it. hmmm... so Kevin didn't spend the whole of the last decade "building a studio" then - he did work on some released music at some point! ;) He mixed a track on the latest Primal Scream record . It's nothing special. He also played guitar on the album and toured with them to support it. The sad thing is he seems to have become so caught up in listening to drum n' bass (read this in an interview) that he was trying to move MBV in more of a d n' b direction, most of the band members split for other pastures, and it just became a case of misguided genius. Re: [313] Infiniti feat.: Juan Atkins Never Tempt Me
Just listening to the various remixes of "Never Tempt Me". (Tresor 132) The second track (Flowing Mix) by Thomas Fehlmann has its points but I still like the original best. Anybody have any comments about the CD? mediadrome If you're referring to the insanely slept on and badly (non?) promoted SKYNET album, I personally think it's mostly an awesome piece of gorgeous funky, melodic, deep techno. Granted, a couple of the tracks feel like exercises in "repeating the groove", but even those have a strange kinda charm. I think it's one of the most slept on techno albums yet, and it pretty much matches, and often surpasses, M500's DEEP SPACE in its grooviness, cheers, j _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Carl Craig/Moodymann in NYC : Opinions?
Alright, NY area 313-ers. Any opinions on the show last Friday? My opinion? Moodymann's set was sloppy, self indulgent and somehow interesting, for the first 20 mins. Plus, i thought his c. 1982 Prince-isms behind the mic were pretty funny. But I expected something tighter. Carl Craig's set was a joy to hear and watch, but unfortunately he went on waaay too late and any energy I had for dancing was sapped. Great to see him do a "live" E2-E4, though. Some folks i spoke to afterwards hated the show, though. One said it was overall so sloppy in execution that its no wonder Americans ( I'm assuming my friend who made this comment was referring to the US record buying public) don't take 313 music/ artists seriously. Re: [313] Re: anyone know? - urb dont know
I have to disagree. I think URB has done a pretty admirable job of covering the trendy and the not-so-trendy, (Black, White, japanese or Drexciyan ;) ) with equal attention. Check out last year's Innovators issue. I have yet to see another "Future Music" magazine -- XLR8R included -- put out an issue like that one, where the great choice of "innovators" selected was matched by some high quality writing. If I have one - uh - issue with URB it's that they can be a tad Left-Coastcentric, and that I rarely read a negative or even highly critical review of new music. peace, Jorge From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] Re: anyone know? - urb dont know Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2000 16:29:36 EDT Hi all, I USED to be a reader of URB magazine. I think they do have an interest in Future Music Culture but it seems to be White Future Music Culture. It seems to have lots of tidbits about this and that but very white. There is a whole heritage of stuff that should be covered in -depth around this music. I think Derrick described his music as "Kraftwerk meets Funkadelic in the elevator." Carl Craig said they wanted to make music that wouldn't be classified as "ghetto", funny but Detroit Techno seems to be ghettoized. Like it's something for white people or music obscurists... I don't know It seems to me that the overall lack of American media coverage on Detroit techno has a lot to do with racism. If Juan, Derrick or Kevin were white I really believe them, their work, and things like the DEMF would have more respect. I think the DEMF was a great thing and I just regret that I wasn't there but thank God for archived webcasts. I think the Detroit News gave it its biggest coverage to my knowledge and even some that was suspect. Re: [313] Live In Detroit 1999 Tracklisting.
Anyone willing to trade a copy of this for something? Or anyone know where I can purchase a copy? J. From: "Jonny McIntosh" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Subject: [313] Live In Detroit 1999 Tracklisting. Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2000 13:55:41 +0100 A few people wanted to know about the track listing for Theo Parrish's Live In Detroit 1999 tape. I've just listened to it again (after trying last week only to find the tape was swapped by my girlfriend for the Little Prince, in french, which was nice, but not much of a groove). I haven't done all the house tracks, cause I don't know them all. I know all the disco/boogie except the one that Discocaine sampled on "Back to back", if anyone can ID this, let me know. If anyone, out of gratitude, wants to reward me for this, I don't have either "Overyohead" or the one sided Summertime 12" thing. If anybody should find a spare copy of either, let me know, and I'll sort out reimbursment by way of cash or exchange. Here's the patchy listing: 1. Theo Parrish 2. Theo Parrish 3. Herbie Hancock - Stars In Your Eyes From the Monsters LP, which is crap, also available on a 12". 4. Players Association - Hustlin' From their first LP. 5. Larry Heard? 6. ??* 7. Old Trax thing, sounds like a dub of something well known? 8. Five Special - Why Leave Us Alone Fairly easily found 12" 9. Cameo - It's Serious Very easy to find 12" 10. Fingers Inc. - Washing Machine 11. Theo Parrish 12. Body & Soul type thing.* 13. Theo Parrish - the best he's done, IMO, is this Overyohead? 14. Apparently on a Salsoul subsidary, I know Discocaine sampled it for Back to Back. If anyone knows what this is, let me know. 15. Theo Parrish. 16. Theo Parrish. 17. Whatnauts - Help Is On The Way Quite hard to find, though try www.raregrooves.co.uk , they had a special on it a while back. 18. Made In The USA - Shake Your Body On De-Lite. The 12" is quite sought after, the LP's middlingly easy to find. I've got a spare 7", if anyone is desperately after it. 19. Marvin Gaye - Heavy Love Affair From the In Our Lifetime LP, which is good. 20. Bumblebee Unlimited - Lovebug Reissued on Unidisc, also on rare Red Greg 12" and album. It's Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams etc. 21. Roy Ayers - Can't You See Me On 12", also available on some comp, apparently. One of the tracks marked with an asterisk is by Kings Of Tomorrow under a pseudonym that I cannot remember off the top of my head, but they used the same name for the "Rude Movements EP" on Yoshitoshi- I can't remember which track it is, either. Sorry. Similarly I haven't written what tracks are which for the Theo Parrish ones, partly because I am lazy and can't be bothered to check when I get home and partly because I don't have all the Sound Signature twelves to know. "CRAIG, CARL: Landcruising CD (BLANCO Y NEGRO/WEA) $17.25 Now available as a mid-line reissue, this is Carl Craig's debut full length album, originally issued on the now-doomed UK WEA-associated Blanco Y Negro label in 1995. A concentrated, fully developed album (not a collection of previously released singles), Craig went all out to record one of the classic, defining records of Detroit-originated electronic music. A controversial record upon release (obvious guitar textures can be heard sampled; the overall sound is much more luxurious and sophisticated than usually expected from Detroit techno productions; it didn't contain any of Carl's numerous popular tracks under prior alias'; and, it was released on a label of dubious credibility w/ major label distribution), it is full of epic tracks and is a crucial document in Craig's career overview.. It has never been distributed in any proper sense in the US and remains largely unheard by Craig followers who are much more familiar with his Planet E/SSR output. Ripe for rediscovery." Sorry, for the large post. Just delete it,instead of flaming me. d The truth from the artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as Prince. (In his special numeric "language" and all...) http://www.npgonlineltd.com/freedomnews.html 4 The Love of Music: 2 Very Different Approaches Real music lovers do not simply consume music. Real music lovers develop a special relationship with the works of the artists they like. At some point of their xploration of the music of a new artist, usually something "clicks" and triggers a whole process of discovery which involves wanting 2 hear everything the artist has ever put out (including b-sides, non-album contributions, etc.), wanting 2 hear it in the best possible conditions, wanting 2 hear live renditions of the music and wanting 2 share this discovery with other people. They also feel that things like album packaging r an integral part of the musical experience, that the artwork, in so far as the artist has been involved in it, is an integral part of the artistic statement of a specific release and they want 2 own an original copy of it so that they can xamine it from all angles, in search of clues, or bits of in4mation which might enhance their understanding and appreciation of the music. On the other hand, some people just consume music. They want a copy of a song bcuz everyone else is in2 the song. They don't really care about top-notch sound quality, as long as it is more or less "CD quality." They don't really care about the rest of the contents of the album bcuz all they really like is the hit single that every radio station and music TV station is playing non-stop. They just want 2 b able 2 listen 2 the track over and over again until they wear it out, they effectively consume it and then turn 2 something else. They r not really interested in music as an art 4m, but rather as a 4m of disposable entertainment always looking 4 the latest hit which is going 2 displace the previous chart topper in their social environment, so that they r sure they stay "hip" 2 the latest trend. Those r 2 very different approaches 2 music. The trouble with the current system is that it is primarily designed 2 meet the needs of music consumers and not of music lovers. There is some overlap, of course, and sometimes real musicians enjoy a fair amount of commercial success which indicates that they r benefiting from the system designed 4 music consumers, that their music is not only appealing 2 music lovers, but also 2 music consumers. This is fine with them as long as they don't have 2 compromise their artistic integrity. Un4tunately, once u become part of the music consuming system, u have 2 obey very different rules and many artists r, understandably, not comfortable with this, which creates all kinds of tensions after they have xperienced a certain amount of commercial success. A Fundamental Hypocrisy The fundamental hypocrisy of the music industry (and of some artists) in the current debate over the MP3 4mat, Napster and other 4ms of online xchange of music is that they r talking about copyright, intellectual property and other such noble concepts when the only thing that they r actually trying 2 protect is the commercial value of their musical "product." It's indicative, 4 xample, that, in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Time Warner President Richard Parsons would make comments such as these: An increasing number of young people don't buy albums, so we are not only losing that immediate revenue. They are also growing up with a notion that music is free and ought to be free. This statement deals with the relationship between music and the public from a purely commercial point of view. Nowhere in his statement is there any indication that what might happen with young people xchanging music is that they might develop a real appreciat

It is a remarkably smooth and deep exploration of techno. which has some bumping tracks, but also some pieces that are incredible 4 am chill material. Having grown up with techno in Detroit, this record has the traits of a classic jazzy techno track -- Kevin Saunderson comes to mind more than, say, Jeff Mills. But Allegory and Metaphor is beyond that a very personal work. It really does what art is supposed to -- express what is unique about Sean as an artist, instead of striving merely to conform to conventions of the form. I personally want this record to be a big success, if for no other reason than to make it possible for Sean to give more of his time to music, because with "Allegory and Metaphor" he's only just gotten started. kent williams -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.mp3.com/chaircrusher -- tunes http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?autostart=chaircrusher -- mix I was in a local used clothing shop with a friend yesterday afternoon and they were playing some lovely, almost baroque techno. I have this theory that we're partly socialised into signs but then there are some commonalities that can't be explained. A lot of those daily readings are dubious though - how many times have you been promised a grand romance/holiday (BOTH OF WHICH I WANT NOW) and they ain't come? Neither had backgrounds in astrology and were just using their creativity. So approach with caution. What is surprising though is how universal astrology is. If you talk star signs with people from different backgrounds (crossing race, creed, colour, nationality, gender, etc) you will usually find common ground. In this Claude Young (Cancer) interview I did recently he said that everytime he logs onto his e-mail he checks out his daily chart and it's usually not far off the mark. Cheers Cyclone Gemini here. Accompanied by the talents of ex-Sun Ra and current Innerzone drummer/percussionist Francisco Mora, plus an assemblage of other like-minded musicians and DJ's, expect a melange of electronic soundscapes, percussion, free jazz, spoken word, turntablism, dance beats of many origins and permutations, and most of all, the unexpected. As has always been the case during his musical career, Carl Craig & Friends looks to challenge his audience's preconceptions even further. I hope Carl shows up this time. The Knitting Factory hosted the same thing last winter and Carl couldn't make it(snowed in). It ended up being Jonah Sharp, Mora, Taborn and another musician who's name I forget. Ok in parts, but mostly an aimless mess. Anyone going on the 13th? Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Thanks. Andrew Duke -- Doesn't sound like an "atypical" Spooky set - and I've seen a few of them - and by this I mean I'm surprised he didn't break out way more records than the ones mentioned. Fatboy Slim??! He's also been known to break out the double bass and play it/play with it, along with finger piano. Spooky's a nice enough guy. I've just come to the conclusion that he's wy in his own head and those that choose to follow will. He's also got a great PR agent, methinks. mis dos centavos. Just bought myself a copy, along with the "Humana EP", a couple of hours ago. Called "Every Dog Has Its Day". Sounds fantastic, though I've only given both of the Axis 20 12"s a cursory spin each. Taping "Humana" as i write. According to the folks at Sonic Groove, where I bought it, Axis 20 is extremely ltd. edition. Sequencers and Music
Hey, folks. Just came across this person's college paper on sequencers and their use/effect on music composition. Looks great. For the geeks like me who drool over this sorta thing (I need to get out more), it's at http://www.dan98.demon.co.uk/textdoc.htm peace and have a great weekend, Jorge PS. I downloaded a D.May set offa Macster last night "Live at FUSE March 1999 Part 1" anyone know where this was, and does anyone have access to Part II? Part I is definitely bumpin' (sounds taken right off the mixer). www.mp3.com/milkish Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

I'm listening to "Skyway" at the moment and wondering: why the hell didn't the SKYNET album get a *massive* push from the press and record label? It's really an amazing piece of work, IMHO. Any ideas? Jorge www.mp3.com/milkish Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

woops...the other track on that apollo record was not "warning" (which was off his deep space album), but "vessels in distress" Juan's vocals are real nice on this record. Thanks. If anyone wants to learn what all your favorite 313 producers (and Larry Heard, Kraftwerk, and many, many others) had to say about where they were coming from - musically and conceptually, in their own words - back in the day, I seriously recommend this book.Highly. M500's "The Passage"
I've got this on a weird little comp. c.'93 (can't remember the title offhand - something like "Techno Fever" or thereabouts...). It's one of my absolute fave M500's - unlike anything else Juan had done up till then. Anyone know how many versions exist of this track, if any? From: c myster <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] Old recording techniques... Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 01:37:29 -0500 What impresses me is the attention to Detail. Derrick would would actually Splice peices of tape and insert it backwards to give it that backspin sound. If you've worked with Linear analog tape or even fixing old eaten cassette tapes, you can respect the amount of tedious time that went into it. mystro While we're on this thread, I would recommend "The History Of House" book that came out a couple years ago. I think it's a UK release through The Mix magazine, so you could probably get it from them. The interviews in there are priceless, and the Detroit ones are from the heyday (88-89). From what you learn about the technology Atkins, May, Saunderson (even Larry Heard, Li'l Louis, man! down to Kraftwerk)had to work with to come up with such timeless music, you have to wonder why there's so much garbage - along with some good stuff - now that we have *way* better tools to work with! I was on the verge of buying Cubase when I was shown the light that is LOGIC. The manual is scary as hell, but once you watch the thing in action it's something else.
