Hi,

A slight tangent to this. Does anyone know if there is a pirate radio culture
in Detroit ? Would be interested to listen in if they stream over the Internet.

That Toddler T reminds me of Let Me Be Your Fantasy by Baby D more than

2011-05-17 Thread Mann, Ravinder

Hiya Martin,

Manchester had soul and reggae pirates but don't recall a techno/house one but
I'm going back a long time to 88ish when I was there for a year or so but I
could have missed 'em on the dial. They might have been more prevelant in the
early nineties as jungle broke.

Leeds, has had pirates as long as I can remember and still does. The main focus
was soul and reggae but the N.O.W. Crew/DJ Martin and others used to be on
playing a real mixed bag of music inc hiphop, bleep, disco, techno etc

Might be some usefull information here about the UK scene here

Was that in the early days Rob? I remember people having Car Park parties with
pirate station blurting after the clubs had kicked out at 2am, always on the
edge of Leeds, got so big the police blocked them all off for a couple of weeks
and killed the scene.

Not dubstep Micheal (though i am liking that stuff - some of the stuff
is just techno with a snare on the third kick great for old timers like

Im probably going back to 2002 at a guess. I should of said overproduced
rather than experimental. If you check the archive I seem to remember a
conversation with Tristan who pointed out a number of key releases
(People, GoodGood, Coop, NSM etc) which I checked and liked but stuff
after that was nowhere near as good and I kinda lost interest.

Reminds me of something Ron Murphy told me -- like a lot of things,
something he probably said to a lot of other people as well. You have
to decide whether you're going to be an artist or a businessman. You
have to be a businessman to make any money at music.

It's fallacious to assume that if you lose money you're an artist, but
I can dream, can't I?

It's a different Scuba. Im assuming this is the dubstep Scuba outa Berlin, but
there's no reason why it shouldn't be King Britt.

The 2562 album 'Aerial' is fairly insane. One of the better techno
things
I've heard in a while, and I'm told it's dubstep. Following a thread
about
newer dubstep stuff on Disception recently I picked these up too:

TRG/Dub U - Losing Marbles [Hotflush Recordings]
Pangea - Deviant [Hessle Audio UK]
TRG - Feel For You [Subway Holland]
TRG - Missed Calls [Subway Holland]
Kontext - Plumes [Immerse]

Other new [313]-related stuff:

Kenny Larkin - Keys Strings Tambourines [Planet E US] - I like it, but I
think Glob is the only really essential track on it. I'm one of the few
who
likes a fair amount of his recent stuff, so much so that I think the
Narcissist is better than this.

I got three EPs from Kadebostan. All are excellent. Check them out. I
suspect he's French, so not sure why I'm mentioning them as though
they're
[313] related, but it's good stuff. I suppose Freude Am Tamzen is a
[313]
tangent.

I finally caught up with all the Terence Dixon stuff on Yore, End to enD
and
Nice Nasty. There's tracks on all of these that are worth grabbing.
Proper
techno.

The Dedicated JB track from Stereocity on Deep Explorer.

Inverse Cinematics - The Rise Fall (Sam Irl remix) [Pulver Germany]

All the Workshop stuff that I hadn't already picked up.

The Mole's I've Got My A1 and When It Tastes So Good, You Deserve It

Roland Appel's Lost Valley and New Love

Mujaba's Fuelta

Three of the tracks on the latest Secondo album on Soul Jazz

The Asphalt - 8 Mile Road (Juju Jordash mix) [Deep Explorer]

All of the CIMA stuff. Massive Wayne Gardiner catch-up business. That
and
the Wayne Gardiner's Classic Man Nervous Tracks.

Buying stuff digitally is good! I got some other stuff too that ain't
very
[313]-relevant which I'll probably review on my blog before too long.

Honestly if someone wants to be a Scientologist, it's up to them.
Don't see the attraction, myself.

I wonder what sort of Return To Forever it will be -- The first couple
of records were fantastic, as is Chick Corea's 60s acoustic jazz.
Then he totally flew up his own 4ss. I still listen to Light As A
Feather all the time. 500 Miles High breaks my heart every time. It
is totally the sort of thing Moodyman or Theo would sample.

I agree with Kent. Selling out is about compromising values.

I will also add - An artist has to eat - and it's great that they have
other means of income other than just make records. Better something
cool like an adidas ad, than say flipping burgers or being stuck in an
office. Face it, not much $ is being made on making records.

I have NFI really about a grammy. if you get nominated, it'd be sweet
to get a chance to win one. I'm sure there is a lot of politicking and
bias etc going on, but if I were an artist and people appreciated my
recordings and nominated me, I wouldn't be complaining. And I dont'
think you'd be either.

It does record tho ive rarely used it.

I can speak up for its :
robustness - its tough
reliability - not one disk crash or glitch with 3 yrs of almost daily
use
sound - one of the best for an mp3 player

The Rockbox upgrade works wonder apparently.

The European version of the iRiver H320/340 comes highly recommended,
we've

Stefan

I agree with the garagey comment as it carries a beat I never got into,
it took a leap of faith and a few listens. Not too keen on the title

Dog Shelter is surely a lost Detroit Esc Co track.

The new Burial Untrue -- our friend TomCox turned me on to it. I
was underwhelmed by the first Burial CD, but 'Untrue' really hits me
hard.

There's nothing new about dub effects, vinyl crackle, sampled drums,
or vocal samples. But Burial applies his cutup methods to produce
something crazily funky, emotional and atmospheric. In particular
the track Etched Headplate which has a beat that verges on House
slays me. The start/stop beat has some teasing drama. Almost a
'Shades of Jae' effect.

In fact, to bring it back to Detroit, Burial reminds me a bit of
Moodyman and Theo Parrish, in the way he finds little fragmentary
samples and makes something out of them that leaves their original
context behind.

This is completely wrong, it came from the garage scene before the
scene became more urban/commercial and probably because of it. When
it first hit it was called New Step around 2000 and then started
getting called 8 Bar, which was taken up by Grime later.

As for sounding samey - well, do you honestly believe that the
so-called Neo-Detroit offers something new except for better
 production?

The problem in the Dubstep scene is that people are just using the
same beat, dropping the bass and wub wubbing on LFO2 but Pinch/Benga/

Loefah are still pushing forward with some good stuff.

Burial is just one end of the spectrum with Vex'd at the other.

I don't know the name of the tunes but I was at Exodus/DMZ in Leeds last
friday and some of the selections were pretty techno imo - lovely
percussion, warm kick pitched a danceable steppers bpm and then the
wupwuup coming in, its all good. Some of these guys must cite the german
dub techno as influences.

I can second any of the Scientists cartoon cover releases esp Wins the
World Cup

Also
Dub Factor - Black Uhuru
Starship Africa - Creation Rebel

For the roots dub
Any dub albums on Pressure Sounds, Blood and Fire are usually high
quality and nicely packaged with plenty of meaninfull sleeve notes.

For roots with vocals - The Congas - Heart of the Congas.
Early Augustus Pablo is consistent in my book - minimal melodica and
keys amongst a mighty wall of drum and bass, need to crank up the
sound, it simply doesn't work otherwise.

If you don't like all the roots style, try the non rasta political dub
poetry of Linton Kwesi Johnson. Independent Intavenshan complilation,
the dubs by Dennis Bovell are included. Theres tracks on there that can
make a grown man weep.

I think MEK is the dub ninja on this list, so step up MEK.

I have the Iriver 340 its coming up to 3 years old now, it has a
line/mic in for mp3 recording and I think you can record in a range of
bit rates up to 320kbps or as wav. Seem to be really stable and hasn't
ever crashed on me.

At the time it outperfomed many products on the market as it had radio,
video playback and photo storage and didn't require any additional
software like Itunes etc to connect to your pc.

Have a look at http://www.misticriver.net if you need to know more.

Does anyone know of any poetry set to electronic music?
I wondered if it's been done. I collect these sort of projects -
traditional poems set to music (as opposed to spoken word). I
started
after buying Nikki Giovanni's album which is stellar. I just got an
incredible album RADA did a while ago with Shakespeare readings as
well as some songs - Bryan Ferry sings the immortal Shall I Compare
Thee... It's more traditional pop, the music, not electronic.
  I realised lately that Propaganda's A Dream Within A Dream is Poe's
poem set to music (funny, I assumed it was Shakespeare), but want
  other examples.

RE: (313) Daniele Baldelli mixes

2006-04-12 Thread Mann, Ravinder
Indeed ! There so much in his voice.

I find I 'translate' lyrics into a sequence of notes and they just
become a voice used as an instrument. Words well with hip hop / rap and
the flow becomes allmost jazzlike as certain sequences of notes recycled
and mututed.

What happens this year will be interesting. What if they didn't give
a festival, and everyone came? It won't be no 40,000, but it's a
holiday weekend in Detroit, there's bound to be something good
happening. I've got my reservation -- I'm tempted to come just to hang

I got like an email mailout thing from Greg Wilson, he posted this on the
electric chair message board, so I posted it here to see if ots persuades
anyone to come:

Now then, Mr Ravinder from Leeds, me thinks this is going to be right up
your street, fancy the trip over the pennines?

Greg Wilson on the Leccy Chair:
Less than a week to go now. Just wanted to share some thoughts ahead of
Saturday.

It definitely feels like this night marks the start of a new phase for me,
the Electric Chair being one of the most respected clubs in the UK and part
of a great tradition of underground nights in Manchester, dating right back
to the Twisted Wheel in the 60's. Manchester has historically had a strong
and innovative black music scene and Luke and Justin, via the Chair and
Electric Souls, have evoked the spirit of influential venues like The
Gallery, The Playpen, Berlin, The Reno, Rafters (once the Music Box) and my
own club night of the early 80's at Legend.

Before I started deejaying again, 14 months ago, I'd been, for many years,
almost completely out of touch with what was going on in the clubs. Although
I'd heard the name Electric Chair, the first time I really picked up on what
was happening there was about 18 months back, as a result of reading an
interview Laurent Garnier had done with City Life, which I'd come across not
in the magazine, but online. The interview was about his return to
Manchester to DJ at the Chair. Clicking on a link to see what he'd played on
the night, I was really shocked to find that a handful of records he
featured could be described as 'Legend classics', tracks which I first
played as US imports in Manchester over 2 decades ago, like Sinnamon's
'Thanks To You' and 'Planet Rock', the seminal Soul Sonic Force 12 that
heralded the dawn of Electro era and caused me so much personal hostility
from the Soul purists when I began featuring it on what was still, at that
point, referred to as the Jazz-funk scene.

It was a big surprise to learn that a new audience was now appreciating
these records. Soon, again via the internet, I'd begin to exchange emails
with a number of people who helped educate me with regards to what was
happening on the more underground scene. These included Danny Webb, who
would prove to be a major catalyst in my return to the clubs, being the
co-promoter 'Music Is Better', where I'd make my comeback in December '03.

Much has happened since then, from basically not having a clue as to what
was going on I now feel like an active participant in a vibrant emerging
movement, linking up with people all over the country who share a passion
for a more 'soulful'/'eclectic' approach to their clubbing. Within this
community, Electric Chair is undoubtedly a huge inspiration - the type of
club night people aspire to evolve in their own cities.

Once I'd got the lowdown on what the Chair was all about, I knew it was
exactly the type of night I'd love to appear at. During recent months I've
been able to check it out first-hand on a couple of occasions, experiencing
its unique atmosphere. It will be an absolute pleasure to come and DJ for a
crowd who not only know how to party, but are so musically tuned-in. In a
sense it represents something of a homecoming for me, due to the underground
links that connect me directly back to my former DJ days of 20+ years ago.

Apart from this link back to Legend there's also a further connection to an
earlier time for me. It's my 45th birthday this week and, ironically, I'm
now as old as the speed of the records I started out playing in the clubs!
That was back in 1975, when I was just 15. Now, here I am 30 years on,
exactly 3 times this age, deejaying once more (and loving it!). All very
karmic

Anyway, big thanks to everyone for all the good vibes and kind words during
recent weeks - I really appreciate it. Very much looking forward to seeing
you all on Saturday

i wouldnt describe it like that at all. really the only thing
chicago-y about it was robert owens on vocals for 2 cuts. it was
maybe 30% house and none of it was very acid, though it was very
good. there were some ambient cuts, some downtempo breakbeat kinda
cuts, and even one really nice drum and bass tune. last good thing he
 ever did, actually.

think about it. if jeffs mills declared techno useless, would you

well lets look at it like it should be. lets say all the techno in

Much less dnb, more Detriot atmospherics too the sound. Theres a thumper of

Middle Eastern influences on some of the vocals samples. Hmm I hear you say,

I remember this compilation had a vol2 to it too. For me this was
'Progressive' (is that as bad as Intelligent Techno) House moving to what we
now call Trance. Builds up and break down an all that.

I'll readily admit that I like trance music - of the variety that came out
on the Volume compilation sets. There are quite a few Detroit artists on
those. Check out these track listings: http://www.discogs.com/release/88553

but this is trance before the Great Divide that got its start in the early
90s and by 94-95 was well on its way to pushing trance and techno apart. I'd
like to know - what was the first Trance record that put the massive
build-ups and breakdowns on their way to the history books of dance music?

I know Richie Hawtin and Speedy J were lumped in the trance music very early
on - I'd say that they are two of the only producers that most techno and
trance fans can agree on. They sure knew how to abuse the 808/909 drum rolls
as well. Everyone goes on about Oakenfold but i put more blame on Paul Van
Dyk and Sven Väth and what was going on in Germany and Goa, India for the
way that trance became progressive house/trance.

oh wait...are we 313ers still supposed to hate Trance? oops! I forgot that
trance was supposed to be taboo. a few weeks ago I was at a Dollar Store
and as I was checking out there was a CD display near the register. as I
spun through the terrible selection I came across a double CD compilation on
Rising High Records called The Secret Life of Trance. it included tracks
by Timo Mass and Jam Spoon and it was only one dollar...so I bought it. I
figured it would be good for a laugh or two. so while cleaning house the
other day I decided to put it on and give it a listen before throwing it
away, but ended up listening to it straight through. it's actually quite
good! (?) I apologize, guys. it was an accident and it only happened once. I
swear! I feel so dirty. but at least it wasnt electro clash! :)

oh and regarding movement: maybe it's time to take it off of life support?
it's already made history and has it's place in our hearts forever. why not
just let it go? Keeping a version of it alive artificially or in an
altered form would do nothing but tarnish the fond memories of what it once
was. Have you ever had your favorite danceclub/party/event outlive it's
natural lifespan? it gets pretty sad at the end. examples: Lollaplooza?
Motor Lounge? The Limelight? Ministry Of Sound?

DEMF: Do Not Resuscitate

I have nothing against the DEMF/Movement festival or it's organizers. I
performed at the very first (where I was paid quite handsomely) and what may
turn out to be the very last one (where I performed for absolutely free) and
would gladly do it again if they needed me to, but if the only way to keep
it going is to make it an Area One monster rock show, then it's time to
let it rest in peace and take it's rightful place as a part of the history
of Detroit Techno.

Can someone id this tune for me . . .

Old jack track probably about 88ish. It sounds like a James Brown 'grunt'
has been sampled and speeded up a bit.

Thanks In Advance.
