2001-07-22 Thread Nathan John de Yonker
So hi everyone. Something I saw today astounded me. Thought maybe I could
get some good conversation going before I leave 313/734/248 for the first
time since I was a wee infant.

Are we living in a more self-serving time? I went to Comerica Park today
to see Stevie Wonder on a television perform live a few miles away. Stevie
Wonder is a very rich man. Stevie Wonder has also stopped being a major
creative force. Yet there was something that I witnessed that changed me.
Here he was being moved to tears, thanking everyone from a woman that he
created an entire album with, to a stage hand who was placing his
microphone with the same enthusiasm. Everyone who came to see got down,
even though we weren't even truly there. Even though he is a long way from
Songs in the Key Of Life, he is an amazing performer, and a man with more
soul than i could pretend to muster.

Is Motown and the pop music of that era a more social and caring culture?
Is Detroit techno and the pop music of our era a more introspective and
personal experience? Is this why people who listen to electronic music
have a hard time letting loose and getting together?

No one really dances TOGETHER at raves or clubs, do they? I'm not counting
slabs of beefs and people on drugs that encourage freakiness.

It seems like this list likes to talk about who is on someone's nuts, or
what is art, or why is some pretentious newcomer who doesn't understand
the etiquette of self-promotion a chump? Did anyone ever wonder who was on
Smokey Robinson's nuts? Or were people just plain content with getting the
most out of this universal and beautiful music, and having a good time.

Think about the difference between Stevie Wonder telling me he loves me
just because I took the time to witness his art, and some of the posturing
that the techno community thinks is so cool. I should've played at this
festival because I taught so and so a guitar lick, or this person sucks
because they are white, or this music is so overtly commercial that only
idiots like you could appreciate it.

Maybe I need to put some distance on 313, so that I can really digest it
and create with what i've learned from it. Maybe we all need to put some
distance in before we judge everyone else and act insanely hostile on a
ludicrous music discussion forum.

[313] (don't hate me) gear fs

2001-07-11 Thread Nathan John de Yonker
Hey all, sorry to bother you, but I am not a member of the tech-gear list,
and I want to give my good friends of 313 a chance before I waste time
with ebay.

I'm moving out of michigan in 3 weeks, and I have a bunch of quirky gear
for sale.

Linn Drum w/ midi retrofit. My first piece of gear, this thing is
absolutely badass. Has all the original chips, except for a weird but
funky cabasa. This is such a great drum machine, with is individual
outputs, panning, volume, for each sound. Problem is that this beast got
dropped on its head a while back. The only real authorized Linn
repair/modifier, Forat, quoted me as saying it could cost 100$ plus
shipping to fix at the most. It's got a loose wire that's a bit messed up,
and when you solder it back on, the linn will work, but can take 2-15
minutes to power up. These go from 400-550$ on ebay, so counting in repair
costs, make a reasonable offer. It's in great shape other than the
scratches it received when it dived off my rack.

Ensoniq DP4+ fx processor. Top of the mid-range fx processors. It has 4
individual processors that can be arranged in any parallel or serial
configuration. Good reverbs, weird modulations and delays, good
compressors, weird nasty digital distortions. The problem here is that
output 2 produces some strange intermittent white noise. It can be
lessened or temporarily eliminated by playing with one of the knobs. Maybe
some sort of electronics guru could quickly repair whatever sort of short
is causing the noise. Since you can run fx in parallel, this unit is 3/4's
perfectly functional, and the intermittant noise can be used creatively
for very cool fx. It's got some rack scratches on the top and bottom. I'm
asking 275$ for it.

I've got a motu micro express midi interface in perfect shape. 1/2 rack
space, works with mac and pc. 4in/6 out, plugs into the parallel port. 50$

I've got a 14U Peavey road rack. It's ugly, beat up, heavy, and bulky, but
it has wicked rack spaces for all your gear needs. It has handles and
wheels, so it might be nice for someone who isn't as frail as me. looking
for 50$

[313] my boring take on the fhttp://demf

2001-05-29 Thread Nathan John de Yonker
Hey all,

Interesting weekend.

John Acquaviva is quite a character. I thoroughly enjoyed his set except
for the parts where he played 5 horrible records in a row. Two things
though... I think Shades of Jae is probably the ONLY Detroit techno
classic that can seriously piss off a crowd. I swear it's the
anti-Spaztic. He also totally amazed me with that Plus 8-y track with the
waterfall sample that morphed into synth. Can anyone ID that? Not only
was it wicked, but it summoned the heaviest rain of Sunday. :

Inner City was marvelous. I was thinking they'd be way too deep for people
who didn't know where they were coming from. They had it all though.
Presence, crowd involvement, and those catchy, wicked, and sometimes
deliciously cheezy songs. Everytime I hear big fun and good life I sort of
regret my musical upbringing. My sister owned all the inner city stuff of
cassette, and I wonder what I'd be like now if I had appreciated Inner
City, Eazy-E, and New Order, instead of listening to all of that corporate
rock garbage in the late 80's early 90's.. but hey, I was just a kid.

Juan didn't disappoint one bit either. With him staring down one of the
more evil red/brown/black skies I've ever seen, he mixed well, made a
mockery out of No UFO's, and got me dancing the hardest I did all weekend.

I was disappointed with the festival in general, not because of Carol
Marvin or Ford, but for wholly personal reasons I guess. I maybe got to
spend 12 hours total at the festival, and didn't have the energy for
afterparties. Last year, it seemed like a gigantic techno family, and this
year, I barely saw any 313'ers I knew, and didn't get to meet any new
ones. I think I was just always in the wrong place at the wrong time. Poor
me, but I wanted it to be a sort of techno send-off before I move out of
metro-Detroit for good in August... you can't always get what you want.

2001-04-09 Thread Nathan John de Yonker

I can get you started with a few obvious ones.

I'll start with a Planet E compilation called
Elements of and experiments with sound released in
 1994.

 Mode Selector-F.Flowers
Fanon Flowers is still around and kicking. I'm not sure that he's based in
Detroit anymore. He used to be an Ypsi native. He's made all sorts of
great hard techno records and wowed people at the last demf. I have one of
his 12's on the konsequent label, and he used to run Mechanism
Industries.

 Flexitone-G.Donald, B.Gillen
I always thought Flexitone was just Brendan, but Mr Gillen is the main
brain behind Ectomorph. G Donald, I could tell you but then I'd have to
kill you.

I'm sure people can help you out more, but it's really no wonder that
people sort of surface and drop off the face of the earth. They get jobs,
go to school, move out of the 313/248/810/734, have to sell their gear,
get married, etc. There are countless reasons many great unknown producers
put out one record and then just run out of time to make music. Dare I
call myself even a good producer, I may be in the same boat when I head
off to grad school in august :

Re: [313] D?EMF Line-Up

2001-03-27 Thread Nathan John de Yonker

 Fatboy Slim
I'll believe it when I see it.

 Moby
Well... Moby is a techno superstar. He'll be responsible for bringing in a
much wider audience to the festival, much like the Roots and Richie Hawtin
were to do last year. I'm not going to go poison Carl Craig's cereal over
this. I'll know pretty quickly whether or not Moby is going to impress me,
then I'll go over to the less crowded stages. I honestly think that a hard
core Moby fan is much more likely to be blown away by UR, Interdimensional
Transmissions, or any of the Force Inc/Mille Plateux stuff rumored to be
appearing than a hard core Blink 182 fan.

 Carl Cox
I'm interested in seeing Mr Cox too. Always controversial on this list,
but I hear he can rock it on a good night. What better night for a good
night than the DEMF?

 Laurent Garnier
I like Laurent Garnier. He was supposed to play at the first DEMF.

and i'm also told several Planet E acts!
god forbid! How anti-Detroit can you [EMAIL PROTECTED] Did you boo Jason Hogans
and
Recloose off the stage last year?

Veering off course my little white booty. Just sounds like the

d. thong,
Ani is very right. The reason that people create so much mystery
behind their names is because they consciously decide to remain anonymous.

I don't know how publishing/licensings work in this case,
since I have never released a record anonymously, but I am sure that
the artists in question are in no more danger of having someone make
tone by tone covers of their tracks than someone who puts their full
name on their albums.

If you mean credit from the fans, many artists are content enough knowing
that people out there are wanting to release, purchase, say good things
about their art.

Dipthong said:
Then maybe you could get credit for your

I checked out Andy Weatherall and Keith Tenniswood DJ on Friday night.
Andy played some really nice banging techno, but the highlight was Keith.
I have been dating the same girl for almost two years, and this is the
first time with the exception of the DEMF that I have witnessed her dance
her ass off. It takes a lot, trust me. He played probably the best electro

I'm glad you've had fun. I'm glad I have respect for those who show respect

need more respect, despite it being all that hypocritical.

Your flames make me feel like I'm in 8th grade on BBS's listening to a
bunch of middle schoolers insult each other. I'm pretty sure Mr. Oldham
can stick up for himself.

I do know however this list has turned to sh*t since Alan stopped posting
and the influx of advertisements and utter BS began. In truth I would much
rather be up on someone's nuts in fervent RESPECT, than to be there simply
to ogle and act like I know what I'm talking about.

Up on someone's nuts in fervent respect? You have a much different sense
of respect than I do. Alan has had nothing to do with the crap quality of
this list. Don't forget that Alan left this list when it started to attain
its taste of spam that it has right now instead of trying to change the
subjects, or trying to enforce some netiquette.

Just because someone puts out a lot of records and has a long history as a
figure in the culture doesn't mean they say and do everything right.
Having someone respecting their nuts doesn't really help get
things on the right track, either.

I have some really fun things on the electro/new wave tip.

Has Fischerspooner been mentioned before? I finally picked up their full
length self-titled LP. They're kind of like Abba and Adult. combined with
a little more DSP idm-ish wizardry. This CD is so good I can't even begin
to describe it, but I just did.

I also got John Callaghan's new EP You've got your memories, I've got my
Dreams on Warp. Very weird business. A cut up sexy track with a lot of
moaning and the word blood once in a while. Cute synth pop, and a very
bizarre bad video game track.

Also listening to Landcruising for the time right now. I'm pretty sure
Carl Craig knocking me on my ass head over heels in love with Detroit

this album when it came out.

Re: [313] RE: OT/Gear talk?? Probs??

2000-12-22 Thread Nathan John de Yonker
Hey Dave,

OT stands for off-topic. Yes, the list is about 313 music and culture, so
313 musicmaking, and 313 musicmaking culture are going to fit in
there somewhere. However, it's off-topic and frowned upon because the
majority of list members are not musicmakers. To these people,
conversations about musicmaking intricacies becomes pure filller. I'm not
a DJ, so I know talking about the finer details of djing will make my eyes
glaze over and my finger triggerhappy over the D-key.

What is probably more appropriate is asking the list about a specific
question, and taking it privately with people who can help. One email is
much more fun than 30 emails and then 20 more about how gear is off topic.

Not that I'm the king of netiquette... but even better places to talk
about gear are IRC/ICQ/IM, because you can get instantaneous feedback if
you're stuck on something, or get into more heated debates. I think a big
reason that gear lists get so stale so quickly, is because email isn't the
best method of discussing how to be creative. Much more fun to be on the
phone or in the room. That and mp3.com spam :D
phew...

Interesting and optomistic post, Stacey...
I wish I had been there to see Rob Hood, since he put on such a fantastic
show at I/o many many months back. I don't see how anyone could have such
a disdain for a techno artist doing covers. Sounds like a homage to the
things that make Mr. Hood tick, and I bet it was incredible fun to put
that set together. Anyone who likens it to classic rock doing covers and
furrowing their brows at it might take things to seriously. It's not like
Green Velvet and Farben are both putting out 12's of the Rolling Stones'
Start Me Up... I think it's pretty clever of someone in dance music to
do this.

As for the dissection of music, this list is often the later that you
speak of. Since criticism tends to weigh on the side of negative in our
culture, it might seem like when someone has a lot to say about a
performance, it implies that they disliked it. I'm not sure that's
necessarily true. We're all just trying to chat it up. I like this
discussion a lot more than drug problems and architecture.

Thinking the opposite way, The Dylan Group is an instrumental rock group
that covered Aphex Twin's classic We are the musicmakers with bass
guitar/vibraphone/drums. Very cool...

Hey Mike,

Well.. I can certainly see people viewing it as a disappointment, but when
I bought this comp back in late 96, it became my first who's-who
names-to-faces piece of detroit techno. Sentimental value... it's got the
stars on it for sure.

At the time, the two(three) biggest detroit artists I was getting into
were Claude Young and Drexciya. The tracks by both are hideous. Still the
worst tracks I've ever heard by them. Not a big fan of Saunderson's
E-Dancer either.

This comp definately got me into Eddie Fowlkes. He's got two great tracks
on there, one of which is this slurpy happy pre-klang IDM track that makes
me pump my fist into the air 4 years later. Classics like D. May's
wiggin, Pullen's 8th Wonder Pennington's Art of Stalking Cool stuff
by T-1000, Shake, Keith Tucker, ... first time I had heard actual tracks
by those 3.

Blake Baxter's where's the love rocks hard with extremely tactful 303

2000-11-21 Thread Nathan John de Yonker
Ummm.. NO. It's not a good idea to put spam in the header. Because I could
put spam in my header and flood the 313 list with porn links and
information about amazon.com and everyone would be happy with me?

I'm sort of from the days of the list where I had to grudgingly accept the
occasional advertisement/playlist for web radio shows. ugh!

Anyway, I think if you have an ACTUAL release for sale or you are
performing somewhere, you have the right to share your achievements with
us. The progress of the list members as musicmakers is very important to
me to this degree.

Because mp3.com in my opinion is a scam, and full of so much
garbage, I get wary and angry over the incessant check out my tracks on
mp3.com posts! The acidplanet contest, which I did not give a rat's ass
about, I think has made me go off the deep end about this subject. It got
to the point where people were like yay, i turned on my gear today and
didn't really make any tracks, but check out my cool new stuff for the
redux contest. Ok, if something like that happens again, how about you
post that you are entering the contest, and then if we have any interest
in the contest, we'll probably check the site for new stuff eh? jesus...

mr. revolver compiling links I think is a fantastic idea. If he or someone
else has time, I saw a great idea where there was a webpage with a form
where you could type in who you are, what kind of tracks you do, and links
to the tracks. You could go back in and hit an update button whenever you
changed your site or added new tracks, and it would say if and when a site
was updated on the main page.

This way all of you can leave me the hell alone. Not only is all this
rubbish off topic, but I think it's been destroying this list for about 2
months.
n8

i don't have any trouble with someone posting links to their music,
playlists etc..i think this is what this list is all about, ie: not just
sterile intellectual musings on techno. I think its a good habit for posters
to state *spam* in the subject.

Re: [313] (even more spam)

2000-11-21 Thread Nathan John de Yonker
you may disagree Todd, but if Mr Atkins, Mills or May posted a link to free

Well, I think if Mr. Atkins posted often enough about his free mp3's or
about how his music is charting on some obscure websites/radio station,
I'd get pissed off. It all brings back to my constructive suggestion that
maybe we could have some communal webspace where people who are INTERESTED
could seek out 313 musicmaking instead of having it shoved into our faces
20 times a week.

i wonder if the people complaining make music themselves?
yes. my debut release may in fact be coming out today. Feel free to email
me for details.

2000-11-21 Thread Nathan John de Yonker

Here's my idea..

http://www.bogdanraczynski.com/mp3-form.php

bogdan is a Rephlex artist. his website has a discussion board that was a
spam-fest. Ever since the mp3-links page has been made, spamola has
disappeared. this is idm territory, so if you don't care, don't blame me
if you check out the rest of the site

Here you type in the blah blah about your music. Perhaps a seperate form
could be made for people with radio shows. one link to the show/station
and a second to their playlist.

http://www.bogdanraczynski.com/mp3.php
Links go here, we could have flags settable if your site is updated. This
part could be made a lot prettier, with oneline descriptions and a
bigger than 6 point font when viewing in netscape :)

God forbid people would have to be proactive about checking the site to
see what new stuff people are doing, but if someone is curious enough to
join this list wanting to learn about detroit techno, then they are going
to check out a site compiling everything list members do.

Trouble is, my HTML skills are absolute zero. I can temporarily or
permanently host this if someone else wants to code away.

Re: [313] OT: Propellerheads:Reason Soft Synth

2000-11-01 Thread Nathan John de Yonker
The reviewer of this says Adam Douglas only needs one reason to pick up
Reason: it looks awesome. Notice he says it LOOKS awesome. I've heard on
some of the musicmaking lists I belong to (where I know this would be more
appropriate) that Reason has been indefinately delayed.

With Reaktor, Max, Nord Modulars putting out the raw power, and VST2
plugins that out-pretty Rebirth, I'd say the second coming of
Propellerheads' rave-o-lution is a mess.

Re: [313] who stole the soul?

2000-10-02 Thread Nathan John de Yonker
So basically summing up your reply to Mike, all you have to add to this
thread is belittling Mike's long, thoughtful message. Even though Mike is
offering a great deal of generalizations and minimizations, what he is
saying is a personal opinion. People seem to think you can cover all of
the bases and have some sort of perfect discussion full of
examples/counterexamples, and exceptions. The reality of argument isn't
really like that though. So jumping on Mike's ass and offering idiotic
one-liners to waste the bandwidth of the list isn't going to make arguing
anymore perfect.

Yes, hugh, you are exactly right. music is music, and you can't color
music. You certainly CAN however, color the politics of music, and the
business of music. The culture of music can also be colored by the
aforementioned business and politics. This is the point I believe Mike is
trying to make.

That's kinbd of an over-generalization. I know a lot of people who *only* go
there if there's someone playing that they want to hear.

He played some pretty good tracks last Sat., man.

That's 100% true and I don't think many people would disagree with you.

I thought music was music. Didn't know you can color sound.

 Wow you're jaded.

And all in 10 years or less, huh.

Re: [313] tadd mullinix...new skool

2000-10-02 Thread Nathan John de Yonker
I finally got to hear this album in its entirety and I think it is a
fantastic piece of work. Whereas Autechre seems to put the crazy broken
beats on the forefront, and have the melodies and harmonies in the
background, Tadd seems to take the opposite approach while keeping the
emotion of Autechre's best works. This CD also has an upbeatness that
Autechre and their clones don't have or perhaps even wish for. It's a
refreshing 50 minutes of sound.

Mr. Mullinix is only going to get better, and this inspires me quite a
bit. I believe Tadd quite a bit responsible for sparking my personal love
for music. My appreciation for techno, soul, jazz, and rock n roll, all
began by borrowing cd's from this guy and taking my first trips down to
record time with him way back in high school. It makes me happy to see
his profile rising, and people realizing what a talented individual he is.
n8

Doing something I have not yet hear come from Detroit, Tad strongly
refelects the school of Warp and IDM Detroit fans on the CD. Broken noises
layered with broken beats sounds, the influence of british idm combined
with detroit obscurity is reprezented.(yo:). Not to mention a fancy dancy
pict of Tadd inside. For a debut, the art and design is done professional
 and well done.

The release party is Saturday October 14th at Motor 9-2am

Sounds like you aren't letting someone assert their opinion. Seems like
there's a lot of that on the list today.

So sloppy in execution? what did they think it was a gymnastics meet?
Its no wonder that people like that make comments like that when they come
to events like that and expect to see an MTV stage show. Maybe next time
carl or kenny play we could ask the NYC ballet to dance around them to mask
the sloppiness and help out their execution.

Re: [313] TR-606 VS. TR-707

2000-07-26 Thread Nathan John de Yonker
Mind you, a 707 is MIDI, which makes it a great first piece of equipment
for a techno musician to be. 606's have to worry about sync boxes, kenton,
and all that expensive add-on stuff. And yes, the 606 is more expensive
due to its better sounds, cuteness, and modifiability. The 707 couldn't
control a sedated lobotomy outpatient. It can only sequence other midi
instruments in song mode, which is the main reason I sold mine. Also mind
you, Mike Taylor should soon be chiming in about how gear discussion
should be moved to his email list because that's not what 313 is for.
Lastly mind you, Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut is an amazing
book.

On Wed, 26 Jul 2000, Ted Weinberg wrote:

You mentioned price as a concern, and I thought I'd add that the 606
tends to go for about U$100 more on average than the 707, but you
should be able to find one for around U$250. I wouldn't pay more than
$150 for a 707, if that. I agree that the 606 is superior. As someone
else said, the 707 is more useful as a controller.

Re: [313] Techno Visual Arts + sonic boom

2000-07-19 Thread Nathan John de Yonker

I would disagree. Experimentation does not exist.

I think this attitude is pretty harsh and stuck up. By using the same
logic, you could say that Charles Mingus isn't experimental. After all,
the double-bass had been around for centuries before him, as did the keys
and chords that he used. It isn't as if he singlehandedly invented jazz,
right?

I think a more laidback and encouraging attitude would be to say that
almost anything with soul is experimental. Take the Detroit Grand PuBahs.
They're using booty, detroit techno, and dub, and taking the piss out of
it. Having fun and seeing how far they can go. Like it or not musically,
(and I am nearer to the not), I'd say they are putting their heart into
it, having a blast, and expanding the horizons of the music coming out of
our city. Respectable, IMO. I try to not be so inclusive as to what I
consider experimental, and it benefits my art and my dealings with others
greatly.

Micho makes good music, and does it in his own quirky little way.
Manipulating the guts of musical equipment, nonmusical equipment,
pyrotechnics, etc. are not considered experiments? I think you have pretty
high standards, Jared. Then using such a rude term as reinventing the
wheel and excusing yourself by saying no offense I just want some
discourse. Remember that sinewaves, quadrophenia, and room tone aren't
exactly inventing new forms of wheels, either. Perhaps you could give us
some more concrete examples of what experimental art means to you (no
pun intended with the concrete)

   Micho,

I realy do not believe what you are doing or have done would be
 concidered
   experimental.

If it involves experimentation it is experimental - so if I sit down to
make a track, if I do not start out with a concrete idea but instead
figure it out as i go, then this is experimental no matter how straight
 ahead the resulting track is.

Alright kids, the last two times I've seen Mike Huckaby spin, he's thrown
down this incredible jam. No vocals, it's got these crazy warped disco-ish
samples, and a synth line that arpeggiates in a shuffle-y way. The track
is all over the place, the breaks and fills in it are completely mad. Last
night at Motor, he spun it about 3-4 tracks after Shades of Jae. It's
weird, beautiful, and funky... the perfect combination.

The first time he played it, I got a chance to spot. All I got from the
