(313) Tonight: Ann Arbor
Hi. If you are in Ann Arbor, I wholeheartedly suggest you check out Derek Plaslaiko at the Necto tonight, or Ectomorph with Carlos Souffront at the Blind Pig. Either place you are guarenteed a fun night. And it's very rare that two wonderful things happen in Ann Arbor at once. If you aren't, I will guest hosting on Crush Collision tonight on WCBN 88.3FM from 10pm-12am tonight. For the first hour I will be featuring a label profile/showcase on Environ records, with some stuff from Balihu Records for good measure. The second hour will probably be focused on releases from classic producers Leroy Burgess, Greg Carmichael and Patrick Adams. Again that's tonight (10/31) from 10-12am EST on 88.3FM, or listen online at www.wcbn.org Thanks. And if you're wearing Addidas today, unlace them.

Re: (313) What are the essential Metro Area releases??
For the past two years I've found every single one of them to be essential. So much so that i get alot of flak from my Detroit DJ brethern for playing them so damn much. To say nothing of the fact I've had copies hoisted from my box before. The album contains six of the tracks from the EP series and four brank cracklin' new tracks as well. I usually tell people to by #'s 2 and 3 first, as I think "The Art of Hot" and "Caught Up" are two of the finest things that puts most electronic music to shame. And if you dig those releases, may I also suggest Daniel Wang's Balihu label. Just as funky, but with more of a raw twist to the tunes. cheers to that. i only go back as far as dj horsepower, but damn if that show wasn't amazing and fun. it's too bad the new host is pretty clueless. it's just not good anymore. john leaving marked an end of an era of good electronic music radio in michigan. i think the best memory i had was the last ten minutes of john's last show. about 40 people cramped up in the studio together while john's trying to get his final words in. van loo, carlos souffront, matt dear and myself drove up to spin along with a few others from ann arbor. i can't think of a DJ in east lansing who wasn't in the studio that night either. that show meant alot to alot of people, which is something i later realized when i saw how downhill the show's gone, and how many people i run into complain about it without sugar coating their words. -Original Message- From: scotto [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 24, 2002 11:23 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Finding Fisher I really wish he still had the time to do the Pulse. (313) John Redmond
damnit _ It is with the greatest sorrow that I have to let you all know of the death yesterday of John Redmond. For those of you who are unfamiliar with his work, he was one of the most talented vocalists in this here scene of ours we call "house". He was the voice on Braxton Holmes "People Everyday" on Cajual, "Rise" with Kenny Carvajal on Music 101, DJ V's "Darker Side Of Melody" on Love Slap, Common Factor's "World Is Mine" and "Fascination" on Planet E, and many more, inluding his own especially touching "Tears Dry Up" on Cyclo. He passed away yesterday at Loyola Hospital in Chicago of a heart attack brought on by a congenital heart defect and pneumonia. I do not yet have any details regarding the funeral, as these have not been confirmed yet. However, it will be held on Saturday October 26 here in Chicago. If you would like more information when this is available, please email me privately. I think it would mean a great deal to John's parents to have an idea of how many people were touched by John and his music. If you would like to send a message to his family, please address it to John and Dorothy Redmond. Feel free to send these to me at the email address below, and I will pass them on to the family. Please spread this around as there are a lot of people who would want to know, but we haven't been able to get in touch with. I would also like to ask you all to pray for John and his family. I'd be willing to spearhead this, so please send your privately (so as to not waste bandwidth on people who hate bandwidth wasters) your thoughts and I will bind them together and present it to the family when I go to the visitation Thursday night. Below are the arrangements for Laura -- I can not even start to contact all of her friends and collegues with such short notice and hope that everyone can forward this to people (especially international friends) that I might not have email or contact info for. There will be a visitation Thursday, October 3, from 1-4 and 6-9p at: Fred Wood Funeral Home 36100 5 Mile Livonia, MI 734-464-8060 The funeral service will be held Friday, October 4, at: St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic 19300 Ford Rd. Dearborn, MI 313-336-6200 The time is still undetermined but will likely be around 10-11am. You can arrive early if needed. I will try to update via email when the schedule is finalized. Please take time to pay your respects to her family and relatives -- many of them do not understand the impact Laura had on the global dance music community through her personal and professional efforts and how she pioneered areas considered stardard today. It is important that we give back to her by showing our support and letting her family know what she did for each and every one of us as a friend and fan. Robert Taylor: If they were stick to their principles, they wouldn't sell any of their records to the big chainstores. But of course they do. Submerge have no control over their records ending-up in chainstores. that's down to the distributor. they know their records are carried by HMV, Tower et al, and they can't do anything about that, but they still want ppl to support "Mom and Pop" stores in preference to the majors. with regard to the licencing, personally i see no harm in it... without the success of Jaguar would Submerge have had their new building, would there be so many wicked new records coming out of their operation, would Submerge be able to support and nurture talented ppl who otherwise might not get a chance? Submerge make a point of being true to themselves, being "underground" as we like to perceive it. in my eyes there's a difference between working within the confines of the industry in order to survive, develop, and grow, and working within the industry in order to buy yourself a penthouse in Monte Carlo. maybe you don't see a distinction there... but i do. rob _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com

RE: [313] House of Jealous Lovers - Morgan Geist remix
Sean: Yeh, its quite similar to the original, which is very much a Gang of Four/ACR type of track. The remix takes a few of the rougher edges off it and is a bit more measured. Overall, its quite nice, but not essential I'd say. "quite nice, but not essential" is a fair call imho. i you fancy hunting one down i think Output licenced this for the UK, and i know a coupla stores have had copies back in recently so you should be able to find it at domestic price rather than having to pay for the US import. rob _ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

it sounds like maybe an edited (or praps re-recorded) version of Max and Nick's set from Public Life as iirc the plug was accidentally pulled at one stage and there's no sign of that on the mp3. anyways, there are some cool tracks on the mp3 Max! i'm looking forward to hearing some of them on wax. regarding the recording/encoding of the other sets i don't have copies of anything myself. afaik Nic (Larsen) has them. hi. everyone in the detroit area. i shall be playing the downstairs "red room" of the necto tonight in ann arbor. it'll be a nice long five hour set, so expect everything from beatless ambient stuff, broken beat jazz to full on 70s and 80s classics. maybe even a fugazi tune or two. so alright. just show up. that's it. plus kevin yost is in the upstairs main room. so if you don't like what i'm playing you can just go upstairs and get your drink on. thank you. rob ps. if you are in new york, you damn well better be at Party Out of Bounds. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] Dabrye, Dykehouse, etc. : Ghostly International Tour reminder
IDOL TRYOUTS. THE GHOSTLY INTERNATIONAL TOUR 2002 Ann Arbor's Ghostly International label, born in 1999, is going on tour this summer for the very first time. Bringing their idm/electro/indie sound to the West, East and North coast, Ghostly promises a stimulating evening of abstract sound, both pop and hip-hop. The Artists... TADD MULLINIX aka DABRYE (Ghostly, Eastern Developments) (live): He's the surrealist. Shifting through various guises with a refreshing competency and sophistication. His Dabrye LP, "One/Three" brought him critical acclaim in the hip-hop undergound (Jay Dee, Jurassic Five), his James Cotton moniker has won him fans like Matthew Herbert and Laurent Garnier, and the classical structure and melodies of his debut full length ("Winking Makes a Face") turned the chin stroking IDM naysayers on their heads. With a new Dabrye LP For Prefuse 73's Eastern Developments label this summer, as well as an album for Ghostly in August, Tadd looks to be headed for even greater success. MIDWEST PRODUCT (Ghostly) (live): They're the band. Honest, hardworking and humble, the 3 Ann Arbor natives combine their unique talents and generate indie-idm-electro epics with assembly line precision to form Midwest Product: A group that wields live instrumentation to crafty electronics for output that is warm, wholeheartedly sincere and Midwestern. Debut LP "Specifics" due July 23rd on Ghostly International MATTHEW DEAR (Ghostly, Spectral, Plus 8) (live/DJ): He's the pin-up. Fusing minimal beats with a deep Techno education; his DJ sets have earned him a cult following soon to boil over into the mainstream dance community. Count techno ubermensch Richie Hawtin as one of his biggest fans. Forthcoming releases on Plus 8 too. DYKEHOUSE (Planet Mu, Ghostly) (Karaoke DJ/Live): He's the scientist. Exploring every sonic crack and crevice to find the perfect melody. His 2001 debut "Dynamic Obsolescence" for Mike Paradinas' (Mu-Ziq) Planet Mu label was well recieved by the international electronic community. Dykehouse's next LP is slated for Fall on Ghostly International and we are proud to have him as a member of our team. THE DATES. Select artists for each city. Maybe this is nitpicky or a typo, but i could have sworn there was actually two projects...Da One Away and Da One Way. With Dego and I.G. being the first project and I.G. and Kaidi being the second? hi there. usually i am all for spirited debate/conversation about politics and the activities that surround the democratic process. i am also one who is for raising hell and spouting off nice little baking tips when the occasion arises. this is neither. normally I shut up about this kind of stuff, but it's absolutely ridiculous to keep an argument like this going on as long as it has, especially when it's A) it's a pissing contest and reminiscent of old Morton Downey Jr. talk shows i used to watch when i was a kid...B)not really relevant to the original post and C) completely irrelevant to any sort of 313techno related material (and putting the situation in 313 terms and examples or putting a little "ps. carol marvin sucks" comment at the end of an email doesn't count) now damnit, i'm a man and i've got things to do and a world to try and get my head around. i've got a job which i enjoy very very much and a record label that i adore working for. my point? i really really really really don't have time to sit and delete msgs from my inbox that border on insulting...not only in a poor grammatical sense, but in the fact that it does NOTHING to raise the level of conversation/debate on this list. if you feel the need to insult everyone, please do so in private (meaning you remove the 313@hyperreal.org address from the To: or Cc: fields), but don't waste my time or inbox space on meaningless, insulting posts. angry white ogreish theakston ps. carol marvin sucks - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [313] kdj
actually that was off the Urban Tribe album, but the particular track WAS produced by KDJ. i don't believe the mix down was done by Carl, but by Sherard Ingram (though I can check). It was off the 1998 album "The Collapse of Modern Culture", which is a very underrated gem (i'm sure many on here would agree with that sentiment) and it's funky. very very funky stuff indeed. very true to moodymann form from around that time...i believe it was a limited pressing of a one sided 12", so if you can find it by all means pick it up...just for the collection all hail king george II, rt -Original Message- From: Maarten Baute [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, June 12, 2002 2:18 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] kdj ok, back to topic... is it correct that KDJ released a single 12" on mo-wax wich was mixed by carl craig? it should be one-sided? Arne: Is the Daniel Bell more in a housier way or in his old bleepy style?? Dan's remix is lush deep house, with a few classic quirky DBX touches. v.v.nice track. John Tejada's remix is cool funky techno. 2 quality remixes, and definitely a record to look out for! a coupla other records came in the mail yesterday morning (thanks Juno!): Shake's new 12" on Seventh City, and the aforementioned "Moves" 12". Shake's 12" is pretty good, if not his best imho. the tracks have got a wicked disjointed funk feel, with beats flying around all over the joint. the record feels like a cross between the 12" he did on Klang, "Mr Shakir's Beat Store", and the various "Frictional Beat" tracks he's released on Frictional. i wouldn't want to over-generalise, but in essence "Moves" is more of the same Metro Area style discoid house from Mr Geist. if you're into that style, and i am, then this record's for you! cheers rob _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
