You don't owe me a thing cause you got that rave-swing, doo wop, doo
wop, doo wop, doo wop, doo wop...
Next time you better ask before heading over... Otherwise i would've
taken you to Watergate this friday for Rolando and Rob Hood !
Hopefully i can find something unique and interesting for next week.
I'll let you know for sure!

See you next week!

So I think my last post said I'm in London at the weekend and
Berlin the one after (17/11/06) - anything special afoot?

Think I'm a bit tied up in London (or I may end up that way with
the people I'll be with) with maybe a party late on Sat but any
tips for later Friday (I get in 11pm-ish) or earlier Saturday may
be actionable. Or even Sunday - is it Co-op at Plastic People?
I've never been to either and I'd love to. I'll be sniffing around
that street where all the record shops are Saturday day so if

any London listers will be around and fancy a coffee meet hit me back.

Berlin's looking Weekend-ish Friday and Watergate-ish Saturday (if
we can get in either as we've failed at each once though
succeeded other times). What isn't -ish is Berghain later on Sat
where thankfully we haven't been refused yet and if we are I
shall be DISTRAUGHT. But apart from Berghain the others are
subject to a better offer - anyone???

Roman if you fancy a beer early Friday or Saturday let me know - we
owe you!

Re: (313) Digital Downloads

2006-08-22 Thread Roman von Contzen

one thing not mentioned so far: hard disc failure!
a hard disc failure in your head might lead to some failure of your
external hard disc you use to store your music data!
from my personal experience: when i upgraded to tiger on my ibook i
had some trouble with photoshop which i thought back then resulted in
some missing os9 partition on my hd. stupid and impatient as i am i
had the idea to install this os9 part on my external 250 gd hd which
left me with a non-accessable disk!!! after searching for help in all
macuser forums i finally bought data rescue and disk warrior for
about 100 $ us each... disk warrior helped me recover the files and
now i have three quarters of the files with proper names like they
used to be an one quarter named like: M01215.mp3, M01216.mp3,
M01217.mp3... and whenever i have some spare time i spend it on
putting the proper names to the files... still about 1.500 files to
be checked... lucky enough i never sold the vinyls and cds - so in
the end i'll suceed. got me some 2nd hd for backup in the meantime...

you don't usually have those problems with vinyl!
regarding the fact that not every one's as stupid as i am (lucky
enough) this might be just a small aspect of the discussion.
one last off topic remark: it's moodymann on the 7th, akufen on the
8th and a m-nus night on the 22nd of september over here - just in
case you're planning some trip

yeah, it may well be a generational thing- my gut feeling is that
vinyl will always have a cool factor that will appeal to people
that will help things tick along for a good while yet- for our
particualr music and where club gigs are concerned, I still haven't
used anything that comes close to the experience of two vinyl decks
and a mixer- in a situation like this I'm not particularly
interested in endless choice of tracks that MP3 playback systems
offer- I'm happy to ride the uncertaintly of having to play with
what you've got to hand and make the best out of what I've got and
also, for me, there IS a difference in sound quality between MP3,
CD and viny.

As for home listening there is no denying the attraction and
convinience of the ipod and computer based music- I spent ages
importing all of my my CD collection into I-tunes but my main
computer isn't in my living room so I can only access this music
through my ipod and scrolling through loads and loads and loads of
artists/albums to find what I'm looking for is a bit of a pain-
sometimes its just easier to bung an actual CD in the player and
let it go!

Very interested in everyones' opinions though and thanks very much
for taking the time to let me know what you all think

hi,
and the translation goes something like this:
in some parts of friedrichshain there has been a 75 minutes power
outage on the night of saturday to sunday. sadly enough berghain was
affected as well. we apologize to all our guests and artists for any
inconvenience this may have caused!
so - don't worry - the outage was last weekend and everything will be
as usual tonight. the other thing they mention in the lower part of
the pop-up is the open air area they have which will be opened if the
weather is fine.

hi - one thing about berghain,
they seem to have a new door policy.
haven't been there for several months cause i in the meantime prefer
the small - more secret - events.

i have heard many complaints about a new door policy at berghain.
if you approach the door make shure to not come as a group of more
than two persons and make shure not to wear your hair too long...

if you look as if you're from southern europe - good luck!
some of the guys at the door have bald heads - so they might act like
they look :-)
club maria has some great acts all the time - but the audience
changed - it's more like the little raver boys and girls now
what i still like is watergate. good music and the right audience -
and becks beer!
for the record shops - besides of hardwax - make shure to check out
space hall at zossener strasse - they have a great collection of cds
and vinyl in the basement.
the venues usually reveal their upcoming acts for the weekend between
monday and friday night - so you might wanna check out the berlin
listing at upcoming.org which i (regarding the partys) update on a
daily basis - as soon as the info about the events arrive.
this weekend we have the m-nus party, rob hood and john tejada in
town and buzz goree on the radio.

and for the partys in general - no need to be there before two am...
better be her in july than in august! no matter if the loveparade is
happening on the 15th - it will again be the biggest concentration
from top djs from all over the world at loveweek.

anyway - have fun in berlin - and whatever you do - don't fall in love

you picked a good time to visit!

Laurent Garnier's supposed to be playing live at Berghain on
Thursday 18
May (it's not on his website though so not sure if it's confirmed
yet).

Andrew Weatherall's at Weekend on Friday 19 May.

Theo Parrish is also at Weekend on Saturday 20 May.

also on the Saturday Berghain/Panorama Bar have Vitalic (live), Fidel,
Ben Clock, Booka Shade (live) and a few others - even if that's not
your

thing you should still go as the club is one of - if not the - best in
the world. it also gets going late (4/5am onwards) so you can check
Theo first.

on the Sunday Berghain/Panorama have an outdoor Hardwax party with
Rhythm Sound feat. Paul St.Hilaire, DJ Pete, Ricardo Villalobos,
Soundhack and a very special guest from Detroit who they're not
announcing.

Hello,

You can now grab the recording here:

If you have any problems, please let me know. Btw, I am not sure what
the bandwidth is like on the server so I will have to play it by ear. If
it gets hammered, I may have to remove the file. If any of you can share
it, that would be cool.

Hello 313ers,

What a lovely day it is today!

I managed to record the show this morning. I had some technical
difficulties and had to end up using the radio in my mp3 player. Still,
the reception was good. I haven't had time to do anything with it to
clean it up other than top-and-tail it and encode it at 192kbps (I was
in a hurry this morning - I have a .wav file on my PC at home). I am
currently uploading it to my site. It should be done in about another
hour - I will post a link when I know the entire file is there.

Anyway, watch this space.

Just a quick reminder that there is a Fuse In special on Radio 1 tonight

Re: (313) monolake

2005-07-08 Thread Roman von Contzen

hi!
actually he's a guy from berlin whose name is robert henke. his website:
http://www.monolake.de/
if you're into ableton live you should know him. the whole ableton idea was
born out of a music project done by robert henke and gerhard behles feeling
the need to create their own software to be able to create music the way
they wanted to.
one half of this project was robert henke whilst gerhard behles
cocentrated more and more on the software project now known as ableton
live.
if you need more info check out this very nice article (in english):
http://www.disquiet.com/monolake.html
i woudn't call monolake a dance project but when i saw him performing last
time he rocked berghain. on this night i met a guy from japan on his trip
to europe. when i asked why he had come to club berghain although there are
so many clubs over here his answer was: monolake.
you can meet robert in the clubs or at hardwax every now and then. last time
i saw him as a guest he was at the moodyman show at club water-gate/berlin.

a very nice set from 99' is online at http://www.betalounge.com/
afaik he performed at oslo/detroit some weeks ago. and he can be found at
every important electronic music festival.
if you haven't heard his music yet you shurely have missed an important
artist of nowadays electronic music - regarding our planet - not just
berlin.

Re: (313) Ultravox

2005-06-22 Thread Roman von Contzen
great compilations! my personal ultravox favourite is dislocation (though
it's not listed)
anyway - those cds should be in every djs record bag for one of those
nights you get invited to dj at your best friends party. after about an
hour of playing the finest from detroit your best friends
girlfriend/boyfriend walks up to you and says: roman (john, harry, tod,
lisa, wendy - just fill in your name right here) you know how much i admire
your style but you know - my friends and the people from my office like to
dance a little and they are not that experienced in listening to great music
(well - she/he doesn't want to make you angry so he/she's very
diplomatic)... i was just wondering if you brought some other stuff as
well - some from depeche mode or some disco like donna summer - you know
what i mean... after a second of thinking to yourself: should i stay or
should i go? (the clash) you dig into your record bag and bring on this cd
set and sadly enough the party becomes a big sucess :-) after which you
receive loads of invitations to dj at partys of your best friends
boyfriend/girlfriend's friends or colleagues - whom you friendly reject in a
(again) diplomatic way: oh... i'm very sorry - but i'm actually travelling
to tokio to see ur perform!
anyway - great hint! i actually bought some of the stuff back then when it
was originally released in the old days (when men were men and women where
women and small furry creatures from alpha centauri were small furry
creatures from alpha centauri) what reminds me of having to reply to the
(313) hello, I'm... thread. after reading jeff klein's entry and few
others round my age i feel safe enough to reveal my real age :-)

anyway - have a great day

Re: (313) Berlin

2005-06-13 Thread Roman von Contzen

hi!
just returned home from work...
1) the best flead market is at boxhagener platz in friedrichshain - the area
t.raumschmiere lives - and mostly young people hang around - 99% locals -
what has a positive effect on the price of the records.
the collection at strasse des 17. juni is huge - but this is a pure tourists
flea market. records starting at 10 euros if you find some cheap ones :-)

2) all the shops are open on saturday - not on sunday
the opening hours of hardwax on saturday are from 12am to ? - don't know
exactly about closing time cause when the weather is nice i'm usually
sitting on the opposite of the river at the Ankerklause for a nice cup of
coffee at 10am - waiting for hardwax to open...
can't add anything to the list brian provided - only the info that Platten
Pedro is a must see... this shop rocks. he has besides of 10 thounsands of
lps 180 thousand singles in his shop. you can't see any walls in there -
only records...
3) ? if you wanna buy records for 1 euro the best choice will be flea
markets. another nice one is at the end of zossener str. - near spacehall
record shop - if you think about looking for the minimux-maximum 4 lp set -
check out spacehall. got mine for 49euros and i had the choice between gsa
version and international version. they have most stuff hardwax has but they
are little more expensive - about 1 euro per record. great selection of
minimal stuff and cds.
4) watergate is still great - went there on saturday to see moodyman and the
place was still rocking when i left at 6.30am. my personal favourite is
berghain atm. if you wanna sleep for an hour or so - they even have
darkrooms :-) it's the best location - not just because of the fantastic
architecture. don't bring your camera. they don't wanna have any pictures
taken - so the security will do a proper search - they even have a female
one for the girls. had to leave my camera at the counter. the few girls that
go there on a saturday night are a) with some gay male friends or b) because
they know that it's safe to go there being a woman that just wants to party
instead of having to scare away the horny guys all the time. berghain is
naturally a good place to listen to house music although they allways have
djs coming from other styles - like monolake few weeks ago - laurent garnier
last weekend and (excerpt from my weblog): coming up next week (friday) @
panoramabar: Playhouse pres.: Warhol's unfinished symphony - with: Ricardo
Villalobos / Daniel Bell / Heiko MSO / Meat
saturday?... maybe Maria: www.clubmaria.de or WMF www.wmfclub.de or
berghain/panoramabar www.berghain.de or watergate www.water-gate.de

have fun!

that are best for records?

The best fleamarket is on Straße des 17 Juni, go to Tiergarten S-bahn
station. It's open only on saturday and sunday from 8 till 16. It's the
best

place for finding records. There's loads of them there.

Q2) Is it true all the shops are shut saturday? I managed to go to hardwax
saturday, but need to know if all the big second hand shops open saturday?
also, what about sunday?

Some are, some aren't... try your luck... That fleamarket is already a
very

good spot but if you can sqeeuze in some time, here's a link that I always
use when I go to another country hunting records:
http://www.cs.uu.nl/people/jur/recshops.html It's a pretty good place to
find shops, eventho the guy collecting is into progressive rock or
something
and some of the addresses are perhaps outdated. But it's a very good
start,

it helped me find decent 2nd record shops in many different countries.
Here's some I know of that might be of interest:

- Das Drehmoment @ Lychener Str. http://www.das-drehmoment.net/
- Dense Recordshop @ Danziger Str. (near to das drehmoment) -
experimental

stuff
- Franz Josef @ Kastanienallee - 2nd hand shop, all 80`s/70`s stuff for
good prices on 2 floors.
- Platten-Pedro @ Tegeler Weg- charlottenburg
- Spacehall @ Zossener Str.-Kreuzberg. Lot's of electro.
- Raw Music @ Zossener Str. Wide colelction of electronic stuff.
- DNS @ Alte Schönhauser Str.
- Tonhalle @ Kastanienallee
- Melting Point @ Neue Schönhauser Str.

Get a map to find out where they are exactly and what U-bahn to catch,
Berlin is a city devided in area's (Kreuzberg, Mitte, etc).

Q3) I have a list of about 20 record shops. any in particular that are
best

for 2nd hand? Looking for rare MAXI's of any description - you know, the
sort of shops that have massive piles of records for 1 euro. Not
interested

in getting any techno, I'm strictly on the gotta pick up some pieces

Is Sasha the Hawtin of the progressive movement.?

(313) tresor pictures of the last days including magda make the tea

2005-04-27 Thread Roman von Contzen

hi gals and guys!
if any of you might be interested in some pics from the last days of tresor
including rich hawtin wearing the famous shirt you are all invited to browse
the gallery on my website: http://www.energylab.de/gallery/stype
atm i'm still busy recording the sets from the last 15 days so the question
someone was asking about the last tracks played can be answered when i'm
able to listen through all the stuff - still three days to go with 10 gigs
of data already on my harddisk :-)
the stuff is available till saturday night at the german streaming station
www.klubradio.de who provided us over the years with all those fantastic
live streams from the berlin clubs. caused by the new german regulations
regarding the fees online radios have to pay they (hopefully only
temporarily) have to terminate the archives on saturday night. though lots
of people were registered as paying members - chances are that the files
might appear on one of the filesharing networks in the coming weeks.
don't ask me - the repeating anti filesharing threads in this list convinced
me that it is an evil thing to do - so i quit about a year ago :-)

Re: (313) Translation from German needed

2004-08-18 Thread Roman von Contzen
hi folks - here's my translation. me = native german - living in berlin

funky as ever fabrice lig starts off with one of those sparkling remixes
caused by a feeling of total happyness and lets the rimshots snap, the
synths toot like a chapel of klarinetts (?the instrument woody allen plays)
on a journey to the countryside, and sails winning and with a swelled breast
(?maybe out of pride) full of knowingness into an emotional knowledge about
the future of the melody. sqeeking and best mooded this track. on the b-side
is dean curtis whom we are lucky enough to hear more in the last time, and
he is one of the epigones of this new detroitsound and he lets this hang out
very cool an full of slamming ideas. beats get beaten around your ears and
the melodies would let the feathers fly in a sparring against fabrice.
coming as the third of those unbelievable good chosen remixers also
stinkworx comes along who faces everything a little deeper and not so light,
but aproaches with a digging smooth funk. if i were splinterfaction i would
be in a good mood, just because of this ep for the whole year.

anyway - that's it. let me tell you that i prefered doris non-woo
translation - simply because the last sentence of her translation gave me
one of those rock hard things for a minute or so *rofl*

cheers

Yep, its good ole Bleed from De-Bug again and his untranslatable reviews
:)

But if someone fancies having a go for me Id be most greatful.

grabend smoothem Funk anrollt. Wäre ich Splinterfaction, ich hätte wegen
dieser EP das ganze Jahr gute Laune.
