(313) Technoir Audio Special Projects

2006-01-30 Thread Pryor, Ryan N
I don't recall seeing anything regarding this on the list...

Adam Ratana of Technoir Audio spent three years tracking down Steel
City recluse and local techno legend Edison Carter to discover that
Edison had ceased making music for reasons he could - or would - not
say. However, he did manage to procure these three tracks from Edison's
vast untapped vault of music. They grace the grooves of the first in the
Technoir Audio Special Projects series - deep yet driving, powerful and
warm, at times ferociously jackin' in their energy, yet always focused
within their intensity. A unique opportunity to experience these
hitherto unheard tracks.

snagged several sealed copies of various Drexciya releases along with a

I think His addition is exactly what this festival needs. I think He'll
draw a considerable amount of the Cities hip-hop fans that, otherwise,
wouldn't attend this year, due to the admission fee. Hip-Hop fans don't
pay admission fees to see John Tejada. I hope this helps makes up for
the lack of attendance due to the cover charge.

I think you're missing the point. I'm referring to an entirely different
demographic. Thousands of people have attended the festival in the past,
due to the fact that it was free. It was something new to check out, for
free. They may not be fans of electronic music. But they came to check
it out, just for the sake of it. In case you're not aware, hip-hop is
the music of choice for most of Detroit's inner city population. Mos Def
will attract these people in a way that non hip-hop artists won't. I
wouldn't pay $5 to attend a show that was strictly hip-hop, but if you
threw a couple of my favorite electronic artists on the bill (big names
at that) I'd probably go check it out.

Yes, 'At Les' is a serious classic. If I were to make a 10 track mix CD,
demonstrating what electronic music and Detroit Techno in specific was...
'At Les' would be on that diskbut hold onwhat if you could ONLY
choose ONE track to demonstrate your love of Detroit Techno and it's all
consuming power?what would that be? Yes, I know there are SO
many...but, you can only choose one...
By default, would you be compelled to choose 'Strings of Life' as it has
arguably become kind of the Detroit Techno ambassador to the world?
Or...how deep are you willing to go?...at the risk of alienating a
 potential convert...

For me, I'd be handing out copies of 'It Is What It Is' like a priest
giving out holy communion to all those wanting to be saved. (No Catholic
 jokes please.)

Ok, ok..I know I said only one...but I'd have to sneak in 'Jupiter Jazz'
...and those that could handle 'G force' would get that upside they hedz!

On second thought, yeah- nevermind- this is fruitless- as I stare at my
wall of CDs and mix disks- just too much good stuff to haggle over. Forget

I even said anything. Let's just exchange holiday greetings for the next
 few days instead.

 Best.

attacks, absolute negations, controversial statements, though
arguments... tough in giving tough in taking... so please try to
comply and give a fvcking straight retort (softened by irony if you
wish can, hey alex i miss you, get out of your cave!) to an opinion
you don't like instead of whining about it's partiality

Every time I look @ my complete S.I.D. collection, I ask myself what would
it take for you to sell these? ... How much money would someone have to
offer you? And to be honest, I can never settle on a dollar amount. I often
try to convince myself that I could sell them and buy a hundred+ new records
with the money I could get for them. Or a new piece of gear. But I've come
to realize that I would starve to death before I sold any of my rare pieces.
Maybe I'm too attached to the nostalgia aspect of them.

in regard to nights at clubs shutting down - I think it's been caused by
people getting nervous about upcoming elections - not wanting to spend
too much money and people just not really feeling like going out because
of this and other social-political woes.

I'd say clubs experiencing decreasing numbers is not strictly a US
phenomenon - there was a time here (Dublin) when 4 or 5 techno nights
could happen over a weekend and all would do reasonably well. Not so
much these day though, a few clubs have a strong following but the rest
might be empty if a Mills or Garnier is in town playing one of the
bigger venues.
I reckon it's got a lot to do with the fact the dance music - or at
least the form of it we discuss here - isn't new any more, so there's
not such an urgency to see what it's all about for those people only
getting to a club going age now.

On the first Maurizio record (Ploy?), on Maurizio's mix, What is the
artist/title of the track that it is based around?

I'm guessing it's AshRa/Schulze/Gottsching or some other cosmic

Anyone know? I have no idea and could do with finding out.

Seconded - Great to read the words of the man himself. The more I find out
about UR, the stranger it seems.

We don't make music in search of fame and fortune. We make it when we feel
like it. That can be extremely frustrating for artists on the label.

Who is the 'we' in this quote? Doesn't this seem circular? It's the artists
who make the tunes, and they put them out when they feel like it - no
problem, yeah?

There's other strange stuff detailing the internal politics of UR, but I
don't want to over-analyze my heroes. It's just...interesting to think about
how things go down internally in UR.

This warms the heart though:

If you're an assault DJ, we feel you got skills, manners, respect...

The fact he mentions manners - man, who the f*ck else in 'dance' music
ever talks about manners? Total respect to the man. I'm sure such things are
the secret of longevity.

which two people are now the source of much bitterness among the former
Koobla staff, due to a feeling that they hastened the demise of Koobla by
jumping ship to Phonica (and apparently taking a lot of Koobla's

RE: (313) Oliver Ho/radio playlist - 15/5/04

2004-05-19 Thread Blackman, Ryan (UKEKT)
Check his label Light and Dark for some really deep stuff, also an early
doublepack on Blueprint (09??) was excellent.
Some pretty dense techno there, but with infinite more substance than a
lopped banger.
Take a look at his label Chango for some slower, funked out stuff.

I have the new album too, are you speaking about track 4??

hello

Just received the new Oliver Ho album in the post, it's called 'The
Soft Machine' and is coming out on Meta. Listening to it right now in
fact and have to say that I'm rather enjoying it. There's a track
that samples Steve Reich (always the way to win favour with me) +
lots of 313 style synthy business.

Hadn't actually consciously heard any of his stuff before. Had lumped
him together with the looped bangers people but there seems to be
more to it than that.

Anyone have any further Oliver Ho recommendations?

Do you happen to know if he got legal clearance for the Steve Reich sample?
Historically, Reich gets REALLY grumpy when people sample his work
without permission. I'd hate to see a lawsuit arise out of this.

Which Reich piece is it, by the way?

Yes, it sounds like it has an excerpt of Electric Counterpoint, the
Reich piece composed for/performed by Pat Metheny - a deeply 'techno'
composition for those that haven't heard it - also a wonderful
creation that I'd recommend to anyone.

BTW, I also got sent an electro record by EMS (on Satamile), it said
in the press release that he builds all his own synthesisers etc from
the transistor up! I was quite impressed by this, but couldn't really
detect any noticeable difference in the music itself.

Does anyone know anyone else who does this? The only person I could
think of is Aphex.

You know the S.I.D shop in Detroit?

I presume some people on here shop there.
Well, does anyone know if it's open during the Movement Festival?

A mate is off to the festival, and I was planning on giving him a few quid
to try and get me some of those S.I.D 12's.
(I don't own any of them)
Thing is, I guess he'll want to buy them as well. Does anyone know if
they're one per customer?

Also, can anyone recommend the essential ones?

I think I'd like to get the Drexciya one, I heard that a few years back.
But I can't afford them all, so is there one or two that are essential?

Many Thanks

Alex

RE: (313) uncomfortable performing (was laptop something or other )

2004-05-11 Thread Blackman, Ryan (UKEKT)
OK, I will do my best to explain what I mean, but it may not come across
very well...

Too high is when you are having to actually lift your arms above your own
centre of gravity.
If you assume the DJ position (arms in front, bent at the elbow) then IN
MY OPINION the decks etc should be BELO , or at least level with that point.

It sounds silly, and I am having trouble expressing what I mean, but the
reason behind this is that whenever I have played with the decks ABOVE this
height, I find that I have to exert myself more, and my movements are not as
natural as they could be, because I am working against my own centre of
gravity (which is roughly a persons belly / midriff area.)

I am not a tall person, and obviously it will be different for many people,
but I maintain that if the decks are too high, then the performance will
certainly not be as lofty.

I enjoyed the last Space Base before Xmas and had a fantastic time - quite
an obvious choice of disco and house classics (Relight My Fire, Let No Man
Put Asunder, There But For The Grace Of God etc) plus a number of
not-so-obscurities (check the Choice tracklisting for examples) - I'm sure
you could get better disco at a dedicated disco night but it was at Plastic
People, there was a great drunken festive atmosphere and, with less than 200
in there, lots of friendly faces around, so I had a great time pretending to
be a train (choo! choo!) to Moskow Disco - you just have to hear disco on
that amazing system (the vocals especially sound so crisp on it).

Just out of interest, what are they like these non techno lost parties? I

oh, and oooh, Final Scratch? is this the one that uses mp3? does that sound

Mine would be a close tie between Larry Heard playing Anastasia (not

So is his entire career being judged on one night? Seems that way from
 what you're saying.

 read this again - an inexcusable half-hour - a half-hour?! You're
complaining about a half-hour?! Out of how much time all together?

christ almighty - let him try something different for a minute will ya?
It
might not have worked for you but maybe it was working for someone else.
if it wasn't working for anyone then so be it but don't f*cking crucify
the
guy just because he tries something different than what you are expecting

this calls to mind the whole thing about the preconceptions we take with
us
to shows and then if the event doesn't live up to what we want or expect
it
sucks or the dj was a disappointment. For example, Stacey Pullen just
played here. Even though I didn't stay for the entire event I heard from
others that he played a fine set. He was well on his way to it when I was
leaving (don't ask - I was exhausted from work).
Now the next day I'm hearing from loads of other people that they were
disappointed with his set. Turns out they thought he was going to play
TECHNO!!, if you know what I mean.
Most of the local jocks who call themselves techno djs were on the bill

I was at the gig Martin was at and he was quite disappointing - He played
a
'party' section as if he was a at a student's union. He played Out Of
Space, which was welcome last year at Sonar, but when he drops it in set
after set, the novelty wears off a bit. He played an inexusable half hour
of execrable nuskoolbreaks. He also played some excellent stuff but he
certainly seemed a shadow of his former self - every set was full of
surprises in the old days and he did seemed to be treading water on this
occasion - last year's Sonar set was one of my favourite clubbing
experiences ever, so I am not 'hating' him, just demonstrating why Martin
 made those comments about him

Subject: (313) My take on Laurent Garnier

After all the hooting and hollering, I think a couple of things need
 to be said:

 1. Laurent is one of the O.G. Technotourists, who started coming to
Detroit
to hang out and play years and years ago. He is every bit the fan as you
or
 I. He LOVES Detroit -- the music and the city and the people.

 2. While he's not the only producer in France, or the first, he is one of
France's true pioneers in Dance music, and is a hero to French kids.
France
is in its own way as insular and conservative as the US, and Laurent
 introduced
and championed US house and techno to an audience that isn't always
 receptive
to new music from elsewhere. His infectious enthusiasm for the music, and
his skills in reading and motivating a crowd, allows him to lead and
 educate
 an audience.

If you don't like him, or were underwhelmed when you saw him, that's
fine..
It's horses for courses. I only like some of what he's done as a
producer.
But I will always have huge respect for what he's accomplished

Hello all

Two points - 1st one may actaully be quite important for list peeps:

1. Just got one of those spam emails that mimics a delivery failure notice
and has an attachment that supposedly contains further info. I've never
opened these in the past but have trashed them on the assumption that the
attachment contains a virus or the like. Anyway, what you might all wish to
know is that I just got one from the following address!

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

My initial reaction is obviously not to open it and to warn you all. Can
anyone confirm whether this is the correct response or alternatively tell me
if in fact it is a bona fide message - I've never received messages in this
form from hyperreal before so I'm not 100% sure whether to dismiss it or not
+ it seems to be totally out of any context.

2. Abe Duque has been mentioned recently on 313. Don't know much about him
myself but got sent a copy of the new DJ Hell LP and noticed the following
message when reading the liner notes in true trainspotter geek fashion:

'All tracks written and produced by DJ Hell'

then a bit further down:

'All tracks written, programmed and produced by Abe Duque'

What is this all about? Has Hell done a Milli Vanilli or is there a more
reasonable (and less libelous) explanation?

Try:

'Free' (Free-Spirit Mix) by Drivetrain on 'Motor City Dayz Vol. 1', 12
(Psycho Thrill)

I missed this as a separate release on Soiree Records.

'Free' is a sky-scratching, psychedelic, libertarian retro/future deep house
with vocals. You'll like it.

This (12 year) anniversary EP on Psycho Thrill is great value.

Also has an (I think) unreleased Jeff Mills track.

I'd be careful even with that method to be honest, as some of these viruses
do genuinely send emails from people you know / trust, having infected their
email systems and fired off messages to all their contacts. (ie the IP
address can be genuine even if the message is not) The best indicator is
really the content itself - most of these ones ask you to check an
attachment, which installs the virus, and they usually just contain 3 or 4
words of text, and an obvious subject like 'read it immediately.

if you're not sure wether a mail really comes from 313 or not, you can
easily find out by checking the header of the mail. most part of headers
get faked as well, but in the received line there's always the ip from
the source of the mail. the ip of the hyperreal-server is
209.237.226.90.
if you don't find this ip in any of the received lines, you can be
sure
that it's a virus or worm...

you offer no serious critique nor constructive critisim. just vague
